Bold styling keeps up with performance

JVC's DRVN Series car amplifiers are all about power… with style. These amps feature aggressive looks, strong value, and plenty of power packed into a rugged housing. The DRVN KS-AX3205D 5-channel amplifier, for example, can power your whole system with 50 watts RMS for each of your front and rear speakers, along with up to 300 watts RMS for a subwoofer. Or, you can put the KS-AX3205D into 3-channel mode and run a pair of high-power components with 130 watts RMS each and still have that 300 watts RMS available for a sub.

Versatile features

The KS-AX3205D comes with the controls you need to get music sounding right in your vehicle. Separate front and rear high-pass filters help you to eliminate unwanted bass frequencies, too low for your full-range speakers to reproduce. You can also adjust the front channels and the rear channels to drive different speaker sizes, like 5-1/4"s in your front doors and 6"x9"s on your rear deck. The subwoofer channel includes its own low-pass filter to keep high notes away from your sub, and a variable bass boost to add some foundation to your music when you need it.

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

I like this amplifier better than I thought I would. It's not perfect, but at this price point it packs a lot of features. The signal to noise ratio is lower than I expected and there isn't an EQ. But aside from that, which you would need to approach a price range that was out of my budget to get, this amp is very nice. It does stay quite cool, though I have not used it for more than 30 minutes at a time yet. This is my first class D, I'm used to the older analog amps that got so hot you coldn't touch them.

Pros: Efficient, cool, easy to understand instructions, easy to connect all required wiring.

Cons: No EQ, signal to noise ration is lower than normal standard.

Nice powerful and compact 5 channel amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was pleasantly surprised by the small size of the amp (totally freed up my trunk space). Was able to replace a very old (7+years) four channel and a bridged 2 channel amp. The 4 channels provide power to my Rockford Fostgate 6.5" front and rear (also purchased from Crutchfield about 18 months ago) and provide very nice low- midrange sound with "very" bright high range details. ( will be working to tone that down a bit) Gave up a bit of tightness (and wattage) in my sub performance when set flat, but the amp as well as the headunit offered enough adjustment to get an powerful clean sound form my Polk audio ported sub.

Pros: Very small for what it offers, Allows for very clean incognito installation. Surprisingly powerful, great if you like a brighter sound

Cons: Gets pretty hot, a little two bright when paired with the already bright Rockford Fostgate brand of speakers. Recommend an efficient sub to get the best out of this amp

Easy to set up. Great value for the money. Just enough amp for what I was looking for, something to push 4 6"X8" speakers and 1 10" sub

Pros: Great sound for the price

Cons: None so far

5 Channel Amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed an amplifier to bring my aftermarket head unit and speaker to life, and to add a sub woofer. After looking around, I decided to give this JVC a try and am extremely happy with it. I found several other amps that were comparable, but really was drawn to the JVC due to the versatility. The sub crossover can be set up to 200HZ. I was trying to increase all of my low end by adding a sub, not just the bump. After installing the unit, which did take some time and planning to do a "clean" job, under the passenger seat of my 2005 Subaru Outback I was able to use the high pass filters on the front and rear door speakers and completely clean up the sound by removing the low end and sending it to the sub. Having 60 watts RMS available instead of the 20 watts from the head unit made a huge difference also. I used the input sensitivity to get the sound imaging I wanted and no longer have to use the fader at all. I was a little hesitant before purchasing this amp because it was at the bottom of the price range for a 5 channel unit, but couldn't be more pleased with it.

Pros: Small size, looks great (even if you can't see it), variable high/low pass filters, excellent value for the price.

Cons: Have to use a screwdriver to adjust input sensitivity & crossover points which is difficult in confined space. Screwing the four corners down can be an issue if the surface you are mounting it to is not flat.

This unit is great so far. Mouted on grid plate under r/r seat in an 06 silverado. After tuning in a non obnoxious place and a couple calls to tech to get my bridges and sub hook ups the way I wanted them I am very happy with this amp.

Pros: Adjustable in several configurations matched to a 10 inch pioneer closed sub and a pioneer 700bt I can controll the whole system from the drivers seat

Cons: None yet

Product Research

5-Channel Design: The JVC KS-AX3205D is made up of three sections, two full range stereo amps (front and rear) and a mono subwoofer amp. The front and rear amps are independently bridgeable, meaning the KS-AX3205D can be used as a 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel amp. The minimum impedance for all channels is 2Ω (4Ω when the full range sections are bridged).

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N) over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Using CEA-2006 criteria, the JVC KS-AX3205D is rated as follows:

  • Power Output:
    • 4Ω: 50 watts x 4-channels (full range) + 200 watts x 1-channel (subwoofer)
    • 2Ω: 65 watts x 4-channels + 300 watts x 1-channel
    • Bridged: 130 watts x 2-channels (full range channels into 4Ω)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 60 dBA

Crossover: The front, rear, and subwoofer sections of the amplifier have independent crossovers. The front and rear crossovers have a 12 dB/octave slope and can be set to high-pass or off (full range). The subwoofer's low-pass crossover is always engaged and has an 18 dB/octave slope. The crossover point for all three is continuously variable from 50 Hz to 200 Hz.

Bass Boost: The subwoofer amplifier has a bass boost circuit centered at 45 Hz, continuously variable from 0 to +18 dB.

Input Mode: Select the 5ch position if your source unit has a dedicated subwoofer output (in addition to front and rear), otherwise select the 4ch position.

Power Connections: The power and ground terminals are nickel-plated screw terminals. They will accept spade connectors or ring terminals up to 0.5" wide. The remote turn-on terminal will accept a spade connector or ring terminal up to 0.35" wide.

Speaker Connections: The speaker outputs are also nickel-plated screw terminals and will accept spade connectors or ring terminals up to 0.35" wide.

Speaker Level Input: A 4-channel speaker level input harness is included, making it easier to add an amplifier to a factory radio or to a receiver with no preamp outputs.
