JVC builds an HD Radio tuner right into the KD-AHD39 CD receiver, so you'll enjoy the superior audio quality and additional programming choices participating AM and FM stations have to offer. HD Radio technology allows FM stations to broadcast digitally in near-CD sound quality, while AM stations sound more like analog FM. Best of all, it's free.

Your entertainment options don't end there — JVC makes the KD-AHD39 expandable. You can add more music sources with a satellite radio, an iPod®, or a CD changer. With JVC's optional Bluetooth® adapter, you can conduct conversations through your JVC stereo while your cell phone stays in your pocket or purse. And you can connect another piece of audio gear using the front auxiliary input.

A muscular 80-watt amplifier, along with an advanced digital-to-analog converter, gives you great sound when you're on the go, and you'll get pinpoint control over your car's acoustics with the 7-band graphic equalizer. Originally developed for home theater, SRS CS Automotive technology creates a strong surround effect with your vehicle's four speakers, giving you a new outlook on your stereo CDs and music files. Gold-plated 5-volt preamp outputs deliver cleaner sound to your amps and subs.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Finally..I can listen to my Jazz station

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After my favorite station went HD this past summer I was left to listen to other stations or my CDs while I drive. This past fall one of my door speakers died and my brother told me to check out Crutchfield for new speakers. I purchased two Infinity Reference speakers and installed them myself (first time) and loved the sound. A few months later after some research I purchased the JVC Arsenal HD radio. Due to logistic issues my brother was not able to install the radio so I went with a professional install. The radio is in and sounds terrifc. The HD signal does fade in and out depending my location, but I can receive my Jazz station as well as some new stations. I am thus far very pleased with the purchase and do not feel the need for satellite radio yet. Thanks, Crutchfield, for all your help in making my decision and with my install questions.

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has exceeded my expectations. It made a huge improvement in
the sound of my stock speakers/amp (although I did also replace the front
speakers as well). I live in an area where radio stations are aplenty
(analog and HD) and nearby. With this said, I still find the HD reception
lacks a bit. Only the strongest HD signals are received consistently. Many
stations fluctuate between HD and analog reception. I'm wondering if
there is some type of device (improved antenna, signal amplifier) that can
help improve the HD reception. And, will radio stations be increasing their
    HD signal strength?

Excellent choice for your ride! I installed this in my wife's '98 Camry. I had already upgraded her factory speakers to some decent sound creating units.
Her Camry has the factory amp and this JVC unit just blows away the factory sound. It's like having a whole new car. She loves it, install was easy and it looks sexy!
One of the two main reasons I chose this unit is that the controls are very easy to use while driving. I wanted her new stereo to be straight forward on volume control, etc.. Second main reason I chose this unit is that in my car, I've had a similar JVC head unit installed for eight trouble free years!
The only con I can mention is that my wife likes a scan feature, where the radio will scan thru all available stations pausing a few seconds on each one. This unit does not have that and for me that doesn't matter. I always know what I want to listen to, so the absent scan is a moot point. She still loves this JVC, so it's all good!

So far no complaints HD radio is great you can definitely tell when HD radio locks in. Seems to fade in out more than it should but could be my location from radio tower, would not fault radio. Looks nice I like the fact it has more black on face plate than other jvc radios which have more silver or chrome. Install was easy with dash kit and harness adapter that it got when ordered radio. Surround sound pretty cool also. Sound great with factory speakers in 2000 Toyota Celica.

I got a '92 Chevy Suburban for towing for my Uncle. With the stock Radio and stock 4 speakers(2 4x10 and 2 4x6). I added this radio and was amazed by the sound. This was the first time that I had heard HD radio and I was blown away by the sound. The HD radio surround sound modes really expand the sound. It made even 16yr old stock speakers sound good.

I looked for weeks comparing features and looking for the best deal. Hands down I made the right choice! The HD feature is great! The optional Bluetooth and Sat radio modules make this an expandable but affordable radio. I am very happy overall the only thing I would like to see is support for DVD-r playback. My entire collection fits on 1 DVD-r but this only plays CD's in the WMA/MP3 file formats.

2004 Passat double din factory replace

Written By keith, houston, tx on Tuesday, January 20, 2009

not easy to install in a passat. the pocket that comes with the install kit (to cover the space after factory radio removal) is too deep and takes up too much room in back of the radio to easily get all the wiring back in. the din 'sleeve' that comes with the radio is too flimsy to get a good firm seating, doesn't 'click' in place. my only other gripe is the power lead you have to run to the fuse block, a real pain. i did get it all hooked up and the HD radio reception & sound is great. BUT unfortunately i think the unit i had is defective because it drained the battery in just a few minutes, while all is off. tried several fixes, checked and rechecked wiring to no avail. so shipped it back. Crutchfield was great. JVC, fix that sleeve.

    Awesome HD

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Reviewed a lot of units and this one has all the features. HD radio is
awesome and is worth getting (included free on this one). Unit went in
very easy, and I suggest the optional GM wiring kit and alert. Note: Beep
is VERY loud, so I recommend you use the option to cut the volume down.
Wiring is one for one, but use the orange wire if you want to dim with your
lights. My doesn't dim, but it's not too bright so no big deal. Hooked to
Apline SPS-17C (discontinued), and they sound very good. Without an
external amp, based doesn't kick in until higher volume. Looks good,
sounds good, and a solid value for the money.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio for a 2005 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. The install was very easy. 2 hours for everything. Everything I needed was included and it fit perfect. The radio mounting kit is made with quality not cheap as I have experienced with other installs. This is all due to Crutchfields install package. Great benefit. I added XM radio with out much effort. I had to download programing to the XM unit but that worked with ease. The added XM hardware takes up some space in my glovebox but it's hidden and out of sight. The radio is great. All controls are easy to use and the sound is good with the factory speakers. Great product for price and ease of use.

This receiver replaced one that was twice the price and this one is ten times better! The circle surround is by far the best sound shaping I have ever experienced. I own a very small two seat convertable and this head unit provides the basis for a system that ROCKS! Even when traveling down the interstate with the top down every note and lyric can be heard perfectly. I enjoy the quality and clairity of the HD radio and the digital readout of the station, artist, and song. I have also noticed that CDs do not skip in this stereo when traveling over bumps unlike its predecessor. The features of this receiver are a whole lot of bang for the buck. JUST AWSOME YA'LL!

Nice full 'spacious' sound for small listening areas

Written By corona56, Massachusetts on Friday, December 05, 2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a nice receiver that can provide spacious full sound in smaller areas; such as a car or truck. The EQ and SRS sound shaping is really good at bringing out the best in my speakers. I didn't realize that the 4x6 Kenwood front, 4x6 Boston Acoustic rear, Infinity tweeters and sub sounded that good. They are still powered by the same Alpine amp (4x35+100W sub) but all of the boom and muddy sound is gone.
The Infinity tweeters are now brilliant and crisp.
The home-built budget SUB with a 8" speaker is now producing deep bass without the painful boom it had before. I was going to replace the SUB; but it isn't bad at all with this receiver.
As I said, I am driving the speakers through the Alpine AMP, so I can't comment on the power section of this receiver. The CD seems good (but I think most CD players are fine these days) and the radio seems ok. I am getting mixed results with HD channels. I am not sure how the antenna in my old truck is; but it wasn't too bad with the stock radio (but then again, I probably couldn't hear the noise because there was so much noise in general with the stereo).
Crutchfield provides excellent instructions and the kit they give you for installation makes it really easy. Even the wiring harness adapter is color matched to the stereo; making it really hard to mess
up connecting the adapter cable to the receiver's cable.

    Japanese Victor Company KD-AHD39

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went online and picked the KD-AHD39 out for it's features. I had questions about it fitting the oval opening in my dash as I have a 2003 Neon SRT-4. I called Crutchfield and got someone right away and
she spoke clear english a real treat after having to deal with overseas "help" manytimes with other companies.

She gave me a number to key in on the site and it showed the install kit that would fill the opening and that sold me.

The KD-AHD39 came one day early by UPS. I had trouble removing the antenna cable from the factory radio. I called Crutchfield and got Eli. Eli brought a 2003 Neon up on his screen and E mailed a picture of the factory radio after the cable was removed so I would know exactly how much to pull out which included a plastic sleeve I thought was part of the factory radio. This was a great help and he spoke clear English.

The KD-AHD39 is great I pick up a few HD stations out here. Right now I like KUT fm They have 3 HD channels on that frequency. With HD radio your
choices increase per HD station. Not all HD station are multi channel.

My ipod interfaces well and I can control it from the KD-AHD39 I had to install the JVC KS-PD100. There is a front 3.5mm input jack I could have used but I was never sure about where to set the input volume on the ipod to match the system.

The sound from the system is better using the same factory speakers. The FM tuner works great. The wiring diagrams were on the money.

It has been four months now and two cars later and I have never regretted purchasing this unit. After it survived a crash( the unit popped out of the DIN haha) I placed the unit in the next car i got. When i placed it in the new car it reminded me of the amazing difference this receiver makes compared to stock and even most after market head units. The surround sound works great. There are so many ways to set up your listening experience no matter what music your into or what type of speakers you have. For example I have the receiver set up so that the larger 6x9 in the back produce more bass. The included HD radio tuner is nice to have but what i love the most is my Ipod adapter. I have the adapter behind the reciever going into my glove compartment where i keep my ipod. No more having my ipod sitting on the armrest with all kinds of wires coming out of it, now i can easily control my ipod through the receiver which is much safer and easier while driving. What more could you ask from a unit at the price, whether you are planning an audio makeover for your car or just want to improve your stock system the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD39 is the way to go!

Pros - Awesome ! I haven't listened to a CD since the install. Such a variety of HD music, two stations per frequency and the sound *****+. Running Alpine 6 X 9's in the front doors, Kicker tweeters in the dash and stock in the rear of a 2005 Dodge 1500. I was considering an amp with a sub due to the lack of bass from the Alpines but this unit solves that problem.
Cons - The remote. Way to small. Same size as the one for the door locks.

This product gives you more bang for your dollar. I recommend it for this type of application. Well priced too. Look out Kenwood and Alpine the Arsenal 39 is a worthy contender !!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for simple yet versatile replacement for my stock stereo in my 96 Honda Accord. It is a commuter/work vehicle so I was not looking for amps and subs and all that jazz. I did want a good sounding unit with the flexability to listen to Satellite radio, my Ipod, or normal stations. I was also very curious about HD radio.
All the other units were "HD ready" but did not have the tuner built into it. This one did. Now I am able to listen to regular stations or the HD ones and the clarity is much better. The only frustration that is totally understandable with Digital is that when you start to go out of range of the station is effects the clarity in a way that is different than regular stations. It cuts in and out rather than just getting fuzzy. But that is technology.
I can now listen to my Ipod with the Aux input in the front of the unit rather than the fuzzy, underwater like sound from the FM broadcaster.
And if I want to upgrade even more I can connect my Ipod direct, or my satellite radio direct.
So many features, great sound, great look, easy to install, easy to control with the front panel or the included remote control.
All for under $200.00!?! There isn't another unit out there that can touch this unit for this price point.
Why more manufacturers are not making a competitive product is beyond me.
    Their Loss.
    JVC's gain.
    Great product.

I bought this unit for 2 reasons and love it for at least five. I always look for a radio with at least 4-volt pre outs this one gave 5-volts. The fact that the stocker I was replacing had a front AUX-input I had to have that also. The Pluses were 3 Pre-outs including one for the Sub, HD was a nice suprise, I figured the price was right so I would try it and liked it. Last was Bluetooth which I will add soon... PSP, Zune, and Cell phone... again AWESOME.

This is a great product. I installed it in 2 vehicles and it sounds great in both. Installation was a breeze thanks to Crutchfield. I had it installed in just under an hour for each vehicle. You can't go wrong with this unit. The HD sounds great. You really can hear the difference. I like that my favorite station has an HD station as well. It makes it nice that when I am listening to my station it show the name of the song and artist. My vehicles have never sounded better. I love the front Aux input. This is really great when I am driving my wifes car. We do not have the same taste in music but with the front aux I just plug in my MP3 and I am ready to go. I did have a problem with one unit not finding any stations but just called Crutchfield and the sent me a new unit. Thanks Crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've never installed a stereo before, but with the kit and instructions Crutchfield sent, it was really easy, took me a little over an hour. I LOVE the HD radio. The sound quality is much better than FM, and the extra stations you get make it worth the cost, especially since this unit is so reasonably priced to begin with. I haven't experienced the CD clicking sound in the three weeks that I've had the stereo, but it sounds like the firmware update advice given in a previous review shows that that problem can be easily dealt with if it comes up. As far as value goes, this is the best stereo out there for people looking to upgrade to HD radio.

    Great Product (Clicking Solution Found)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works very well and does all that it is supposed to. Great HD radio and the price cant be beat. I can definatley hear a difference between standard FM and HD Radio. The Remote is more useful than some claim, I usually keep it in my hand while on the steering wheel because it is so small and for me its a great substitute for steering wheel controls and its useful for anyone who complains about music in the back seat, just let them control it without having to reach through the seats. Sound quality is really good even with stock speakers.

But like the others after a few months my unit developed the clicking noise when switching to CD but i found the firmware update online at jvc's website and it makes the clicking go away for good. All you have to do is download the file and burn it to a cd as a data file and nothing else on the cd no folders or anything and put the cd in, it says a few things, then upgrade complete and asks you to remove the disc, after that the sound goes away so i figured id share that solution with everyone so the problem can go away and not ruin the perception of such a great unit ...Hope This helps.

The JVC Arsenal is packed, and you should too just to install it.

Written By stikwyrm, Tampa, FL on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

This item came very quickly and undamaged with exactly what they said would be in there. On installation I decided to keep the stock 2000 civic hardware instead of the included Crutchfield spacers. The wiring diagrams from Crutchfield and the included one with the JVC Arsenal were both extremely helpful even though they didn't exactly match up. Installation took me a couple of hours as I ended up installing it right after I got home from work and it's dark out. This could be done quicker with adequate lighting obviously, that and I also played around with the dimming wires and power/starter wires to get the unit just the way I want it.
I read a lot of complaints about HD stations going in and out or things not working but I used the radio heavily after installing it last night and today, and everything seems to be fine. The OEM antenna picks up plenty of channels, and if you're having a hard time getting HD stations you can always opt out for regular stereo channels. I also purchased the optional ipod cable which I have yet to try out, so no review for that other than it fits nicely in the back with the other wires.
Thanks for another quality product Crutchfield and JVC! Now I just need to upgrade my speaker system to listen to the higher quality music....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Thanks to the help of Crutchfield assistance personnell and provided installation instructions the receiver was relatively easy to install. The receiver worked great as advertised from the moment I turned it on. The sound is much better than the factory radio that it replaced and HD radio sounds wonderful. I have incorporated an IPOD and a Sirus receiver with it and they also worked great thru the receiver with ease. I highly recommend this receiver, it is a great performer for the price. Be prepared to sit down with the manual when it's up and running and learn all the things it can do.

Great sound , unit is loaded with great features and a great price and it looks cool too. Using it with my stock speakers and the sound is terrific. Two year warranty is nice. Got the iPod adapter -- works seamlessly with the unit. Crutchfield service and support was awesome. By far the most experienced and knowledgeable team (try finding that kind of expertise at a big box store). Thanks Crutchfield!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit because it was the best value for all the features I wanted. You definitely need the optional iPod adapter- well worth the extra money! I love being able to have in-dash iPod controls! The HD radio works great in the Philadelphia area! I love the design and display as well. My only complaint is that the installation guides were not as helpful as I thought they would be. My mechanic and I had a difficult time installing the radio portion of the head unit in my 2006 Civic. Fortunately, Crutchfield was very helpful and told us what we were doing wrong. The head unit (including the radio) works perfectly now! The only other thing I can think of is that the remote is pretty worthless. Unless you practically touch the remote to the screen, the signal isn't powerful enough to reach the head unit. But other than that, I'm very satisfied with this new unit and would recommend it to anyone!

    Replaced twice

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always been a fan of JVC, so I went with this unit. A great combination
of features and price. However, two problems:

First, whenever I switch from one selection to another (FM -> CD or CD ->
FM) I have to re-adjust my sub-woofer settings as it seems incapable of
remembering the setting from one to another.

Secondly, and BY FAR more importantly, like others here and elsewhere
have reported, after about 3 weeks of normal use, the CD mechanism failed
and started making a LOUD clicking noise everytime I switched from the
tuner to the disc or whenever I started the vehicle with a disc in-place.

I sent the first unit back to Crutchfield for a no-questions-asked
replacement (perfect exchange policy). But, the replacement unit started
doing the SAME thing after about 3-4 weeks.

There's a MAJOR bug in the firmware in this unit's CD player software.

Looks like I'm done with JVC car stereos.

    Excellent Features and Price

Overall, I've enjoyed the KD-AHD39 very much. I bought the unit because of it's ability to receive HD Radio and that has been well worth it. It's great that some stations have two channels and I believe they do sound better. When the stereo switches from Regular to HD it does seem to get slightly quieter, but it is really not a problem at all. There really is no static from from my listening experience. As for when you lose the signal it sounds more like a CD skipping rather than increased static or loss of quality. I like how the display will also show you the song name and title if the station allows it. The lighting on the stereo looks great at night and I think the controls are very easy to use. My stock speakers in my car sounded much more rich and provided more bass than I ever figured they would after installing this stereo. The AUX IN works perfectly as well and the CD drive worked just as expected and also showed the song/artist for the song when playing. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this unit to anyone.

Very happy with the radio. Excellent sound once you get everthing adjusted. Not sure HD is all it is made out to be but it also depends on the station. Here in K.C. some stations that are HD you can turn the volume all the way up and it is not loud at all. The people at Crutchfield rock and I am so glad I went with them !! Overall very happy with this unit. I have had no problems with the display not being bright enough like some have said. This went in my 04 Silverado and it was a breeze to put in. I would suggest this radio to everyone.

This head unit is amazing! I had a Kenwood KDC-135(HU) and a MPE200(EQ)with speakers and a JL Audio 12W3v2 D4 subwoofer(all powered by amps), I replaced the Head unit with this one and removed the Equalizer and it never sounded so good! This thing runs circles around the old stuff. The HD sounds great! No static what so ever. This thing is loaded with so many features that I had to use the manual. I am not sure if a lot of head units have SRS but this one does! It has 3 presets, it also has a fully customizable user setting! You can change the front and rear SRS FOCUS® levels and the front, rear, and subwoofer SRS TruBass® levels! Not only that you can mix the front signal with the rear signal for a richer sound in the back seats. This makes a huge difference in the listening quality along with the 5V preamp output. I have NEVER heard a bass guitar in my music unless there were no other instruments playing... all of the sudden it's in every song and I can't stop smiling! Changing the time could not be easier. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO KNOW THE TIME TO SET IT! Since it is HD Radio, all I needed to do was set the clock for AUTO and set my time zone and it did the rest. The only problem is when you get just out of reach of the HD, it fades in and out of HD. Some times there is an echo because you are borderline HD/analog. But that is what happens when you live in the middle of the woods.
    GET IT!

I purchased this unit for my 2008 Nissan Versa. It arrived with all of the usual Crutchfield goodies. I had it installed in less than two hours. I'm very satisfied with what I got for the price. It looks great (especially at night), gives me HD radio, plays MP3 CD's, and let's me plug my IPod into the front face. My only complaint is that some stations don't receive as well as they did with my original factory head unit. Other than that I would highly recommend this unit.

I spent awhile researching what kind of stereo to get. I wanted something that played mp3s and had
a aux input and figured while i was getting all that
might as well go ahead and get HD radio. It sounds
pretty sweet, it did take a while to figure out what
everything does. At first the HD radio does'nt sound all that different but switching back to analog after digital you can tell a big difference and seeing as we have the sweetest HD station in all the land it makes it sweeter.

All the installation gear is sweet deal, I will definitely
order crutchfield stuff again. Its a sweet deal for a
    sweet radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Ok. Pros and cons!!

Cons: sometimes the HD option wont lock on the signal or fades away. When this happens, you cant change to the HD2 stations. I have found this to be the case in the afternoon mostly. The buttons are
pretty close together but I havent found this to be an issue. There is just one other thing that is a little annoying. There are many options for the equalizer portion of the radio that is quite confusing. But the manual will help with this.

Pros: HD radio kicks!! I am having such a blast with the "stations between the stations". There are so many HD2 stations to choose from that it is almost unlimited. I never knew that it could be this amazing.

The amazing options for add ons for this radio is awesome. I purchased a cable for my Zune, and it works flawlessly. I am sure that i will soon purchase the bluetooth add on as well.

the sound on this radio is incredible. I run 3 amps, and a ton of high end speakers (all purchased from Crutchfield), and the sound quality with this radio has exponentially increased. The crispness, and low end is beyond anything you can imagine

So, overall, this radio ROCKS. I would highly recommend it. In fact, My buddy bought the same radio after I did after seeing and hearing it. I have
personally owned JVC products for over 20 years and this is one of their best!!! Hope this helps!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit mainly for the HD and the front Auxiliary jack. It is installed in a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback and replaces the factory radio. I did not replace the Subaru factory speakers.

WOW, what a difference. While HD radio is not truly
CD quality, it is decidedly the next best thing. For HD
FM, the clarity of the instruments is head and shoulders above the best analog FM stations. I was extremely concerned about the analog AM reception
(no HD for the stations I listen to) and have found that I had nothing to be concerned with. After listening to HD FM, the AM drop in quality is more noticeable but still at least as good if not better than the factory unit (I believe my listening discrimination is being recalibrated and tolerance for
lesser quality is being reduced.). The FM sensitivity for analog stations is better than the factory unit for
those stations I have tested. I don't see specs for AM sensitivity, but for the station I usually listen to,
I would have to say this unit is better than the factory unit due to more even reception through out my usual haunts.

I was quite surprised at the difference in bass response on this unit out of the box and the factory
unit. I will probably have to dial it down a bit once I get some time to review the manual.

I am extremely pleased with this unit and found it to
be better than my expectations. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

The Seattle area is loaded with HD FM radio stations.

Purchased the JVC Arsenal, used the included directions and kit/wiring harness. Took about 10-15 minutes to hook up the wiring harness with some wire sleeves & crimping tools purchased locally. Once that was complete, I was able to remove the factory stereo from my 05 F-250 and install the JVC in @10 minutes. Fantastic sound quality and excellent expandibility options. I've always been an Alpine guy but I couldn't pass up this HD Radio Head Unit for the price. Strongly recommend this product!

Purchased unit for my 2002 BMW 330i, was not sure if I would get at least the same level of sound, but was suprised after a few tweaks to get it to the same if not higher sound (thumping bass) that I like sooo much
I went with this JVC, because of the built in HD Radio (one less box to add)
Also the optional Bluetooth & front AUX input, the price was right....was not ready to invest a large amount of cash in a new stereo system yet.

    Excellent Head Unit

Written By Corbin, Houston, Tx on Sunday, June 15, 2008

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live in Houston where almost every station is broad casted in HD radio. When this head unit switches from the analog signal to the HD signal, it is a very noticeable difference. No hissing or scratchy noises in the back ground at all! It sounds like your listening to a cd!

When you first switch to the station, it is in analog, then after about 3 seconds, it locks it into HD and becomes very clear. I use to hate listening to the radio because I am a fanatic when it comes to sound quality and clarity. Now I listen to the radio all the time because it is so clean.

That and the fact I can plug in my mp3 player to the aux input. No more buying, burning cd's, or having to worry about keeping up with cd's or scratching cd's.

This head unit is also very versatile. It has a pretty good equalizer built in, that you can tune to your exact likes. If you don't like spending all the time to tune it yourself, you can choose one of the six or seven preset equalizer functions (hip hop, jazz, rock, classical, custom, hall, etc).

The fit and finish of the head unit is also top notch. It doesn't look cheap.

Overall, this is one of the best head units I have ever had, and I have owned about a lot of head units over the last 10 years! I highly recommend this head unit if you are considering switching to HD radio, or even want a versatile head unit.

The HD Radio is wonderful. Nashville has a good selection of HD stations,
and this receiver tunes all very well. I picked up four new stations with
more on the way. The front input is very handy for XM until Audiovox gets
the XM Direct2 working with the JVC Headunits. Hopefully that will be

Yes, this radio has some nice features, but that doesn't make up for the
poor product quality and customer service from JVC. I had
mine 3 months before it developed trouble in the CD mechanism. JVC's only
option is to either take it out and send it to them, at YOUR expense, or
drive it to a remote facility, at YOUR expense. 3 weeks later and I am STILL
driving around with a hole in my dash where the car stereo should be. The
first time, their "authorized" repair center told me it was fixed, it wasn't,
and I had to give it back to them again. That on top of what might be the
WORST display in the history of car stereos. FORGET about seeing it in the
daylight. My suggestion is to buy another brand.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced a factory Delco unit with this model, and the results were dramatic. I've done a lot of stereo installs over the years, and this one was the easiest by far, thanks to the kits from Crutchfield, the clarity of the instructions, and especially the wiring harness. Just solder the wires on the JVC connector to the wires on the Chevy connector (in the house), and it's ready to plug in! Now I can play MP3's in the car, and connect my Garmin Nav system or Ipod to the AUX jack on the front of the radio. And Philly radio stations never sounded better when played through HD radio. Music is crystal clear, much more dynamic range (difference between soft passages and loud passages), better highs, less distortion, and amazing bass. I SHOULD'VE DONE THIS YEARS AGO!

I don't know if this is a review of the JVC receiver or HD radio, but the
combination is the most dramatic audio upgrade I have ever done. If you
listen to radio and you have HD broadcasts in your area you have to get
    this unit.

Install was easy with the Crutchfield adapters. I took the time to solder all
the connections but still had it installed in a couple of hours. Crutchfield
instructions were clear and very easy to follow.

The receiver sounded great from the first time I powered it up, but you can
go in and tweak it to just the sound you want. The display is easy to read
under any lighting conditions. Just a fantasic unit. If I had known what a
dramatic difference I was going to hear in my Dakota I would have paid
    twice the price.

I really like the remote, even though I don't have to reach very far, its great to sit back and change stations, etc. The display is great, even in direct sun light when the top is down I don't have any problems seeing the text. I only get 1 HD channel, it sounds great, can't wait for more stations to upgrade to HD. I am very glad that I upgraded from the factory radio.

There are two flaws with this product that other reviewers haven't mentioned. One is for everyone, the other is one that I have experienced so far. The display on this unit is one of the WORST I have ever seen. USELESS in the daylight. It is dim and can't be made brighter. It also doesn't allow you to see the clock AND the track names, as my old Sony did. The other problem, and this may be me so far, is that after only 3 months with this unit, it has developed a loud clicking noise in the CD mechanism when I power it up. Now I have to drive out of my way to a service center and be without it for 2 weeks, then go and pick it up. VERY annoying, and more should be expected from JVC. That being said, the unit is nice. Sound is great, especially with the SRS, and HD radio is a nice feature, especially built in.

I love crutchfiled. I am an audio person. I get in someones car and if they turn on their radio i automatically want to start fiddling with the bass and treble to get it to sound right for their setup. I like all aspects of this radio. It is visually appeasing, user friendly, performance is great, HD is an awesome feature (if you think HD isn't any different than reg radio you should get your hearing checked) and thanks to crutchfield easy to install. You really can't beat crutchfield with their master installation guides. If you don't buy this radio, whatever you get, buy it from crutchfield. They supplied every little installation piece to simplify installation they could, FOR FREE. You will get the radio at the same price as any audio store, with the installation components and guide for free. I also bought all new speakers (Alpines) and a 8" sub (rockford fosgate), so i can't account the awesome sound directly to the radio, but my wrangler sound awesome. I will never buy any audio component from anyone but Crutchfied.

This can be distracking when driving the car. But it's definitly worth the price.

Upgraded from an Eclipse CD1000 deck. I am a big car audio nut and I have had many decks and this one is by far the best I have seen in a while. I used to be and am still a loyal fan of Eclipse products and used to be very skeptical of JVC decks but this one has changed my mind. Great interface and user functionality, my sub sounds better and stronger than ever (12" 1200W Kenwood with 1000W Kenwood Amp), built-in HD Radio is VERY nice. I love having the option available for Bluetooth. Makes my 6x9s and 6.5s sound excellent. Overall a great deck. JVC is right on the money with this one.

Great Value but could be better

Written By Mark, New Jersey on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Pros: HD radio is very clear and AM HD is an unreal improvement!, 7 band
EQ, 2 year warranty!, clean power, 3 sets of gold plated 5V outputs for
future expansion!, HD search function, overall good ergonomics, many good
settings such as adjusting volume levels of other sources relative to the
    radio and many display options.
Cons: HD radio - you 'gotta get it ... to get it. I live between Philly and NYC
and short of 1 or 2 local HD stations the big city stations are hard to pull in.
The overall reception of the radio is marginally better than my stock unit
(hard to tell how much is the tuner and how much is the antenna). When
the unit switches automatically between digital (HD) and analog it is not
seemless. You can hear echoing, time lapse, or dead air. Fortunately there
is an option to "lock" the reception onto analog - this is a good work
around but defeats the purpose of having the HD. Also if you are on HD2
or HD3 and you lose the digital get dead air until the
digital signal pulls back in. The 7 band EQ is good but only allows for +/-
6db per frequency. It took a lot of experimenting to tune in the sound.
Other: I have a 2004 Passat and you have to hook up the switched 12V
wire out of the head unit to the 12V input wire on the antenna adaptor -
otherwise you get no AM reception whatsoever !?!?
Conclusion: In the end a great value for the money but falls short in some aspects.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

PRO: Has good clean stable power and the ability to control a subwoofer and amp if installed. HD radio has better stereo separation than regular FM for sure but not that much of a fantastic improvement. There is absolutely NO background hiss. Guess that's the biggest thing. Usually have to wait 1-2 seconds for the HD station to "sync-in" so you sometimes hear a wierd echo, sounds kinda cool. You'll get used to it and ain't no biggie. Easy to wire up the wiring harness. I soldered and heat shrinked all connects. Sounds great!
CON: Surprising problem; has no capability to scroll through the programmed radio channels with a single button. This is an important safety feature to have while driving because the individual channel buttons are small and you have to take your eyes off the road. The HD radio is nice but isn't that much different from a strong station, definately not any where near CD quality. Why are there AM HD stations, they are all talk where I'm at and the HD does little improvement for AM.
If you want HD radio get it built into the unit like this one. Add on units are a hundred bucks or more and an additional installation. I found out that you CAN scroll through the radio strations with the miniature remote control. Unfortunately it was built for small child-like or female hands making it mostly useless. I'm 6'4" /275 and man sized hands. Anyone know of aftermarket remotes for car stereos? I dont...
    All-in-all I like this unit...B+

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I waited a long time for this unit because I wanted to get an HD radio with a built in tuner and a front AUX input. I also wanted to get a fairly powerful unit because my Mazda 6 can be a little noisy inside driving on the highway to and from work. So this fit the bill better than the Dual or Jensen, and I'm glad I was patient.

This is a great sounding unit, even with my factory speakers. It is very powerful. I don't see why anyone would need to get an amplifier with this unit.

The HD radio sounds amazing -- the downside is you will be disappointed when you listen to a station that does not broadcast in HD because the difference in sound quality is significant. If you live in an area with a lot of HD stations your radio presets can fill up quickly with the multi-casting!!

There are a lot of features and you can customize the sound to your liking both with the equalizer (rock, pop, classic, etc settings) and the simulated surround sound option which really fills your car with sound. It does take a little doing to learn how to use all the features.

My biggest "complaint" would be that my factory stereo seemed to do a better job of picking up further away stations. I can still get them, just not as clear. A relatively small price to pay for all the positives, though.

Because my car's stereo was integrated with the heating controls the install wasn't the easiest, but I think in a standard car set up it would be fairly straightforward. Most of my time was spent taking the console apart and putting in a new one with the adapter kit. I am not the most mechanically inclined person and this was one of the more complicated things I've ever tried to do but thought I could do it if I went through Crutchfield. Well, I was able to with several assists from Crutchfield plus a few tips from Mazda owner sites.

All the Crutchfield advisers I talked to were very helpful, and I really appreciated not having to wait on hold like with most customer service lines, especially since I needed a quick answer while sitting there with my car torn apart!

    KD-AHD39 for Toyota Tundra

Written By mike, san antonio, tx on Friday, April 04, 2008

I installed the KD-AHD39 in my 2005 Toyota Tundra Double cab a few days
ago (along with the IPod and Blue tooth adaptors) with the instructions
provided by Crutchfield, it took me approximately 2 hours (most of that was
reading and programming the units) and was very easy. I am glad I didn't
have this installed as it would have been an unneccesay expense.

The Radio is awesome. I have a 40 minute drive to work and was able to
pick up my favorite station for about half the drive with the factory radio,
luckily the same station is broadcast in HD and I get crystal clear reception
from door to door. The blue tooth took some figuring out, but now I really
appreciate not having to fumble for the phone or wear an annoying
headset. The reception for the bluetooth is really good, I am going to have
to find a better place to mount the microphone as it is currently laying on
the visor and picks up road noise, which is otherwise clear when stopped.

I have only played with the Ipod through 2 playlist and it is not as easy as
the wheel, but more user friendly than other units I have seen on the

Overall I am very happy with this unit and defintely recommend it.

    MOS-FET Amplifier: The JVC CD player features a CEA-2006 compliant MOS-FET 20 Watts RMX x 4-channel amplifier in 4ohms at 1% THD+N with an 80 dBA signal-to-noise-ratio.

DiAS Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner, offering unprecedented analog radio performance with higher sensitivity and selectivity. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception. In addition, AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. Many HD Radio stations also offer more than one channel of programming. This service is called multicasting. You can setup the KD-AHD39 to search only HD Radio stations. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AHD39 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set the clock, choose the time zone and daylight saving time, select the dimmer mode, select the external component type (changer or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display, set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low), and several other operational settings.

Intelligent EQ (7-Band iEQ): This model has Rock, Classic, Pops, Hip Hop, Jazz, and User preset EQ curves. The User preset can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For the User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.

SRS CS Automotive: SRS Circle Surround Automotive (CS Auto) lets you experience a natural sound field anywhere in the vehicle, unlike other sound field manipulation methods such as time delay. The SRS Circle Surround II decoder converts a stereo signal into multichannel sound. SRS Focus elevates the sound field to an optimal listening level, while SRS TruBass creates rich bass, even without using a subwoofer. SRS Focus can be applied independently to front and rear speakers. SRS TruBass can be applied independently to front and rear speakers and the subwoofer. You can choose from the following presets:

    • Type A: systems with large front speakers with tweeters and rear deck speakers
    • Type B: systems with large front speakers with tweeters and door-mounted rear speakers
    • Type C: systems with small front speakers and door-mounted rear speakers
    • User: allows you to store your own setting

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AHD39 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 5V front and rear gold-plated preamp outputs, this unit has a set of 5V gold-plated subwoofer preamp outputs. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and a selectable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of 90, 135, or 180Hz.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The input level of the auxiliary input can be adjusted from 0 to 5.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item number 105KSU57 or 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio only input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust; playback starts automatically.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Dimmer: When 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead and the dimmer set to Auto, the display dims. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times) or On (display is always dimmed).

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off. In the PSM menu, the clock can be set to display with the unit on or off, only turning off when the ignition is turned off ("keyed" operation).

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-AHD39 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK50). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking and Volume functions.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The KD-AHD39 has a "OE Remote" lead on the back panel. When used with the optional PAC SWI-JACK interface (item number 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present.
