Our take on the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65

by Zak Billmeier
JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 CD receiver

Built-in HD Radio™ for digital sound
Your favorite AM/FM stations never sounded so good. The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 CD receiver lets you tune in digital HD Radio brodcasts, cranking up the sound quality significantly. Many stations take advantage of the multicasting feature, which lets them broadcast additional channels on the same radio frequency, so you have more listening choices. And it's all backed by the Arsenal two-year warranty.

Put Pandora® Internet Radio in your dash
JVC makes it easy to play your favorite Pandora stations. With your iPhone connected, you can skip songs, change stations, and rate songs using the receiver's controls. Plus, the 1-amp USB port charges devices quicker and keeps them charged while they're multitasking.

Separated Variable Color display
The KD-AHD65 features a super cool display that lets you change the colors on the controls independent from those on the screen — with over 30,000 possible shades per side. That means you can create the ultimate color scheme, match your dash perfectly, or just let the colors cycle continually for a fun effect.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

    HD Radio

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio technology significantly improves audio quality and reception, as well as includes information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality sound with static free and clear reception.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Text Display: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs.

Note: Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-AHD65 can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-AHD65 to search both analog and digital radio stations, only HD Radio stations, or analog radio stations only.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually or automatically, using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Radio Timer: You can tune into a preset station at a specific time regardless of the head unit's current source. You can activate the Radio Timer once, daily, or turn it completely off.

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AHD65 can play MP3 (8-320 kbps)/WMA files (32-192 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-AHD65 offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 features a front panel USB 2.0 (type-A) port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device (such as a USB thumbdrive or digital audio player). The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3(8-320 kbps)/WMA (32-192 kbps) audio files stored on a portable USB mass-storage class device formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The KD-AHD65 can recognize up to 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 65,025 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files (up to 60 characters). USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (5V/1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 98dB. The JVC head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Control: You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

    • Head Unit: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, and Audiobook. Once a Playlist or Category is selected, the content is listed in alphabetical order. The KD-AHD65 also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.
    • iPod: You can choose to navigate your iPod or iPhone's stored music from its clickwheel or touchscreen, like you are accustomed to during normal usage.
    • External (App Mode): External Mode lets you enjoy audio content from your downloaded music Apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) and driver assistant Apps (such as Trapster) streamed to your Apple iPhone, through the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate and view your apps; the head unit will only display the clock and "EXT Mode".

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 using your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/iPod connector cable (included with your iPhone). The JVC KD-AHD65 provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list; you can sort the station list by date or A-Z. You can also skip song tracks within a station. In addition, you can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

iPod Display: The KD-AHD65 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, when in Head Unit and iPod mode (not in External mode), or listening to Pandora Internet Radio. The head unit can display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Dual Auxiliary Inputs: A front-panel & rear-panel stereo minijack are provided to allow the connection of portable audio sources. Simply connect your portable digital music player to either the unit's front or rear auxiliary input, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-AHD65 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-AHD65 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-AHD65 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AHD65 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-AHD65 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Source Link EQ: This feature allows you to store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, HD Radio, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

4.8V/6CH Preamp Output: The KD-AHD65 is equipped with three pair of 4.8V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear preamp outputs offer balance/fade control and are designed to hookup to a full-range 4-channel amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and designed to hookup to a mono-block subwoofer amplifier.

High-Pass Crossover: The KD-AHD65 features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from 100 Hz, 120 Hz, 150 Hz, or Off. The 'Off' selection is a full-range setting.

Subwoofer Controls: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Crossover: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Crossover for subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 55 Hz, 85 Hz, 120 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (0-8) from the CD receiver.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 CD receiver features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC Arsenal KD-AHD65 features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except the eject button (it remains red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

    Bluetooth/Remote Control

Optional Bluetooth: The unit's rear-panel auxiliary input can also be used to connect JVC's KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately). The KS-BTA100 must be plugged into the rear-panel auxiliary input, and not the front-panel auxiliary input. The front-panel auxiliary input does not support Bluetooth. The KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player. The optional JVC Bluetooth Adapter includes a super-sensitive microphone, an Answer/End button, and playback controls. The KD-AHD65 can be set to automatically mute any music audio to your vehicle's speakers so you can listen to your telephone call using your car speakers.

Note: Not all Bluetooth devices will be compatible. Visit the JVC Mobile Entertainment Bluetooth Support Page for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-AHD65 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (541SWIRC, sold separately); or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It appears to be a very nice stereo. Does take some getting used to all the menu options to get it set up and running. But all in all, pretty easy to operate, good sound and good features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sucker rocks. I love the HD Radio, very easy to use. Looks great when installed and sound quality is good. I love the different color display options for the buttons. You can control your iPod on your iPod which is great.
    Pros:
Easy to adjust setting & navigate menus. Very cool color display options.
    Cons:
Some buttons are kind of small and you can tend to hit others when using. Not the greatest instruction manual to explain all the more in depth features.

    Awesome little unit

Solid little unit. Audio quality is good when loud is switched to on (paired with infinity reference door speakers). I love the rear aux input so that I can hook in an AptX reciever instead of regular bluetooth. Great little unit that fits nicely in the car. Just beware the FM receiving isn't really good.
    Pros:
    Sound, great equalizers.
    Cons:

    JVC Arsenal stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great stereo all the way around. It has all the features an audiophile could ask for. The equalizer has tons of settings for perfecting the sound of your music. I paired this stereo with some Kicker speakers, and the sound quality and power output are amazing. I love the USB input, which allows you to control an iphone or ipod through the stereo, rather than fiddling with the device itself. I highly recommend this stereo.
    Pros:
Great sound quality. Lots of settings and input options.
    Cons:
The plastic faceplate has a little bit of flex to it when you push the buttons. It would be nice if it felt a little sturdier.

    JVC Replacement

Written By Podman, OK on Wednesday, May 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace an older model JVC radio in my car. The salesman at Crutchfield told me the unit would plug in without having to rewire anything. That's the main reason I bought another JVC radio so I wouldn't have to rewire the setup. Well he was wrong! The wiring is the same but the plugs aren't. The old unit has a big plug and the new unit a small plug. So I will have to rewire the plug after all. So I'm not too happy about that. The reason for the one star on ease of use.
    Cons:
Unit wiring not the same as the plugs are different size. Don't believe what the salesman says unless you can verify what they tell you.

Good value, Sound quality is good for me, if you talk to my wife that means nothing. Ease of use is as good as any. By that I mean I don't need glasses to drive, but to operate the radio I should have them on! So I have a learning curve to remember what buttons do what. Not the same flush mount as factory radio, but that is fairly common I would guess. Works well with my IPod. Instructions from Cructhfield again and as always made the install so easy with harness for the car. Took all of maybe an hour to install.
    Pros:
Color background can be adjusted to match, or come close to factory. Looks good Front USB and Aux connections
    Cons:
Been two weeks since install, none yet.

For the money this stereo packs in a lot options. The only thing that would make it better would be radio data service for song and album titles, but I knew that wasn't there when I bought it. I'm still very happy with what I spent versus what I received. $129 for everything including the install kit.
    Pros:
Lots of features for the money.
    Cons:
Set-up changes are a little tedious, however, there is a lot of customization which is good.

Easy install and noticed a difference right away with my stock speakers, then sounded even better with my aftermarket speakers (which I also got from Crutchfield). I like the Pro Equalizer as it has more specific adjustments than most equalizers. The HD radio is nice as well the stations sounds much clearer. I would recommend this for someone looking for an entry level head unit.
    Pros:
Adjustable color illumination so it matches my dash lights. Good equalizer. HD radio
    Cons:
Display screen has a lot of glare during the day so it is sometimes hard to read. Not very good instructions for using a non-iPod mp3 player.

    KD-AHD65 better then KD-AHD69

Written By Richie, South Florida on Tuesday, February 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a KD-AHD69 because the Source (On/Off) Button is positioned in a better place on the KD-AHD65. The Frequency Responce of the KD-AHD65 is listed as the same as the KD-AHD69 but sounds a little better, a little fuller for CD and USB songs. I used to use Sony in my car but I have changed and have used JVC since 2010. Sony makes the best remotes but JVC beats them in display/button color options. The sound levels are about the same. With the JVC you do not get the annoying beep, beep, beep everytime you shut off your car like you do with a Sony.
    Pros:
USB port - Many, many color options for the display and the buttons - built in HD Radio - use same KD-AHD69 plug for KD-AHD65
    Cons:
Depending on the color you chose, you might have to use different color settings for the buttons and the display to make both appear the same. If the buttons look too bright after you turn down the dimmer you may have to turn down Red and/or Green and/or Blue value by one or two. KD-AHD69 remote on/off function worked but there is no remote on/off function for the KD-AHD65.

Great stereo with USB, few problems

Written By Viperdoug, Cleveland, OH on Sunday, February 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always loved JVC stereos. This is about my fifth one over the years. This JVC arsenal is great. Excellent HD radio quality. I've always loved having the remote control in my truck, but this model doesn't let you turn the power on or off from the remote like my previous JVC radio remotes were capable of. The USB port is awesome, no more burning CDs. However, I'm having issues with files in a given folder playing out of order and not because the radio is on "random" play. I don't mind with music folders, but when listening to an audio book you really want these files to play in order. Make sure you format your flashdrive to FAT32. Even then files play according to a hierarchy, but even with files in numerical order in a folder you may still have issues with them playing in proper order. One last thing, if you have a folder with say 150 files there isn't a way to jump by 10s to a high numbered file like previous JVC stereos could by using the mode button. You have to thumb through them one at a time. Maybe I will eventually figure this out. Still an awesome stereo.
    Pros:
USB port, no need to burn CDs anymore. Remote control.
    Cons:
Can't turn radio on or off from remote. Can jump to high numbered files by 10s, have to move one by one through them. USB file order issues when playing, may not play in proper order.

I had this installed in a 1992 Wrangler. I chose this unit for the HD radio and ability to choose what color display I wanted or to have it display them all in a rotating pattern. If you live in a big city I am sure HD is awesome. Where I live it sucks. So the chanels fade in and out and also skip like a record it's pretty bad. Has nothing to do with this unit, just HD reception is bad here.
    Pros:
Ever color changing display, remote, 2 ipod or other connections, USB for thumb drive connection. More bells and whistles than I need, but I got them.
    Cons:
None for the unit, just check out HD in your area first as you can not choose (that I am aware) to turn on or off HD and HD here in Louisville, KY sucks.

Looks good, sounds good even with factory amp and speakers, unfortunately, it wouldn't move out of the demo mode and just keep rotating through all the functions.. Installation was very easy with the kit and harnesses, took about ten minutes.
    Pros:
Good sound, easy installation, the I pod connection on the front is a big plus.
    Cons:
Buttons are pretty small, the first one sent to me had to be returned. Still waiting for the second one. Scan didn't stop on any stations and I couldn't pick up many on manual scan. I have about 25 HD stations here and it only picked up one. Not sure what the sensitivity is on the radio but if that all you listen to, this is not the head unit for you. I bought it for the I pod connection so for the money it's still a pretty good buy.

Got a lot more than expected

Written By Jake T., O'Fallon, IL on Wednesday, January 23, 2013

After going through a Boss, Kenwood, and Sony, the JVC reciever definitly gave me a lot more for much less than expected. My speakers, when it got to high, would distort like crazy with the other head units. With the addition of a high pass filter in the stereo, it allows me to keep my speakers from having to put out much of the low frequency and have my subs take up almost all of the bass work. This stereo is sleek, has 6 channel outputs, and has many more additions that you will rarely find in a head unit of this price. No problems with it yet.
    Pros:
It set up correctly, can reach very high volumes with no distortion. Havent used bluetooth yet, but also another great addition to the unit. 2 aux outputs. Great unit for a unbelieveable price.
    Cons:
Too many colors to pick from for the display (not a con)

    Cons:
lite up buttons are adjustable but still seem quite bright at nite , presets for anything above the first six are agrevating to access

    Great radio for the price

Great Radio!!! I bought this radio for a 2003 Jeep Wrangler. I didn't want to spend alot of money on an aftermarket radio in a soft top Jeep. I love all the features and the radio sounds great. I like that you can select an ipod mode where you can see the displays on your ipod and use the ipod controls. Some radio's won't let you do that, you can only control the ipod from the radio. I like that you can have simple or complex audio modes (bass, mid, treble). I just want to use the simple mode. I don't care to tune every freqency of the bass, mid, and treble, but if you want to you can. You can choose seperate day and night colors and brightness that changes automatically at night. Very easy to use and setup. I like that when you are changing between am/fm/ipod ect. it waits a few seconds before it changes. That way you aren't hearing every change until you get to the mode you want. I haven't used all the features yet. I can't wait to set up an amp behind this radio. It has 3 sets of 4.8v preamp outputs for the front, rear, and subwoofer. Installs easy with adapters and Crutchfields awesome customer service.

JVC in '95 Accord LX 4-dr

This JVC receiver, JL Audio TR600-CXi front door speakers and Rockford Fosgate Punch P1692 (6x9) replaced the factory casette radio and speakers. I had them professionally installed. I don't play the stereo at a loud volume and the JVC has sufficient power to drive the speakers. I play mostly CDs and don't use the equalizer. This system is a vast improvement in sound quality over the factory set. I am very happy with the JVC.
    Pros:
One can choose the color of the illuminated display, Sufficient power for my taste. It has a tiny remote control.
    Cons:
Unless one changes the setting, the Demo display come son every time it's turned on. I called JVC for help in overriding the Demo. HD radio is not yet "CD-like." HD sounds flat while CDs sound full-bodied. Drums and bass are tighter on CD, cymbals ring on CD. I can't say the same for HD radio. Radio stations don't use the full capability of broadcasting in HD. Many, if not all, split the signal. HD radio does seem to sound better than regular FM, but is definitely not yet "CD-like." .

Nice and powerful, looks good, and has lotta of features. One downside is I pod displays on head unit in I pod mode only, does not refresh display of new song in head mode. Work with music unlimited as well as pandora. Overall very good deck.

One of the best tuners out there, just check the specs. Great price very good sound from the HD tuner and the CD player. It is a bit easier to get into the menu's to set all the EQ and other features than the JVC HD unit from 3 years ago. A good value with fantastic Crutchfield support and installation kits that they include.
    Pros:
Easy to install with all the extras they send you.
    Cons:
Not much,it could be easier to set a few things in the menu's

    99 Nissan Maxima

Written By PaladinTim, Batesville, Ms on Monday, November 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this in a 1999 Nissan Maxima. Earlier this year I purchased the AHD79 model for my Ranger. Both radios are very similiar and outstanding products. My only complaints are the installation kits. Neither kits fit the vehicles without serious modification. The Ranger kit would not fit the factory hole at all. Fortunately I was replacing another aftermarket radion with it's own kit so I used the old kit and just threw the new kit away. The Maxima kit also would not fit the factory hole, it was too wide. I had to use a Dremel to remove enough of the woodgrain frame to get the kit to slide in. Also the kits are extremely flimsy. I had to use super glue to hold the thing together. As a side note, if you are replacing a Bose headunit and plan on using the factory Bose speakers you have to connect the blue/white amplifier turn on wire so the new head unit knows to turn on the bose speakers. Each Bose speaker has it's own amplifier. I also did not need the Scosche Nissan Factory Integration Harness.
    Pros:
Nice looking, good power and sound
    Cons:
    Installation kit is terrible

Easy installation, had to call tech support, very helpful, the install kit didn't come with instructions, the tech emailed them to me, was confused, the bag has alot of extra parts that i didn't need for my silerado, the tech got me straighten out, thanks tech guy, still learning how to get HD radio to work, overall happy with purchase, i found receivers cheaper on ebay, but you still have to buy the dash kit, wiring kit, antenna adapter, and you are on your own, worth the little extra to pay for suppor and all the freebees you get,
    Pros:
changing colors, usb port, 3.5 mm port, Tech Support
    Cons:
buttons small, small remote for big hands

This was an easy installation with the correct conversion kit, great sounding, easy operating once you understood and read the manual, HD came in great and sounded really clear. Received in time for our trip to Michigan everyone loved in placed in my 2004 Dodge RAM 1500 Quad cab, a vehicle I drive 4 times a year. Had a few issues with soldering to two connectors together (radio to Dodge adapter kit) . I didn't have the right size shrink wraps but all worked out well. Took me a few hrs to complete all and most of that was the soldering and taping up part else I say the radio and 4 speaker install took me 45 minutes. Thanks Crutchfield
    Pros:
Easy install with Crutchfields install kits
    Cons:
All the options, display and buttons takes some getting use to.. lol

This was an easy installation with the correct conversion kit, great sounding, easy operating once you understood and read the manual, HD came in great and sounded really clear. One problem is that i had to return twice because of the sub outputs not working an settled for a Kenwood radio in the same price range, i should have tried the JVC a third time since the sound quality and functions were better.
    Pros:
Easy install, good price, sounded great
    Cons:
had problems with the sub outputs and had to return the radio 2 different times.
