Our take on the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD69

by Zak Billmeier
JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Enjoy the crystal-clear sound of HD Radio®

Enjoy what HD Radio™ has to offer with the JVC Arsenal KD-AHD69 CD receiver. Its built-in tuner lets you dial in the enhanced sound quality of digital AM/FM stations, giving you FM sound that approaches CD quality, plus AM that sounds like traditional FM. You can also adjust the receiver's display colors to match your dash lighting, plus you'll get a rock-solid two-year warranty to boot.

JVC Arsenal KD-AHD69

iTunes® tagging and iPod® control

Use the convenient front-panel USB input to connect and control your iPod® or iPhone®, and speed your way through songs and playlists with the KD-AHD69's controls. You can also switch over to the iPod's controls if your passengers prefer the hands-on approach. You'll see song and artist info bright and clear on the receiver's 2-line display.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

When you're listening to an HD Radio station, just tap the dedicated button to "tag" a song you like. The next time you connect your iPod to the computer, you'll be prompted to buy your tagged tunes from the iTunes store.

Play your digital music files

This versatile stereo will handle all your CDs and recordable discs, as well as discs or or thumb drives you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files. You can connect a portable satellite radio to the auxiliary input, or install a JVC satellite radio tuner permanently. The KD-AHD69 also works with JVC's Bluetooth® adapter for even greater flexibility.

Sweet sound

Go ahead and turn it up. The built-in amplifier gives you plenty of clean power when you're out with your friends. An advanced digital-to-analog converter brings out all the details in your music, and you can adjust the 7-band equalizer to get the perfect sound for your vehicle.

Clean sound for your amps and subs

Two sets of 5-volt preamp outputs simplify the process of adding amps and subs to your system, while providing a clean, noise-free signal. The subwoofer output includes a handy selectable low-pass filter, and you can add just the right amount of bass with the subwoofer level control.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use this adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a plastic face-case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis.

Separated Variable-Color LCD and Key Illumination: The JVC KD-AHD69 features 29 color presets for the LCD display and button illumination. Additionally, there is a user preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except Eject, EQ, and display; those remain red. You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination or use a separate color for each one.  You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD display and button illumination.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead).

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-AHD69 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-AHD69 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-AHD69 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-AHD69 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

7-Band Intelligent EQ (i-EQ): The JVC KD-AHD69 is equipped with a 7-Band Intelligent EQ (i-EQ) and 6 user presets (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Bass Boost, Vocal Boost, and User). The User EQ preset allows you to manually adjust the headunit's 7-band parametric EQ(Sub Bass, Bass, Mid Bass, Mid, Mid High, High, and Ultra High) from +/-10dB.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AHD69 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to Low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to High, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. When all speakers in the system are powered by an external amplifier, the internal amplifier can be turned off.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 5.0 volt front preamp outputs, this unit has a set of 5.0 volt subwoofer preamp outputs. The subwoofer output is non-fading and has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and an adjustable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of Low (72 Hz), Mid (111 Hz), or High (157 Hz).

Note: This headunit is not equipped with a a rear-channel preamp output.

Source Volume: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -1 to +10.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

DiAS II Digital Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner that is capable of receiving digital (HD Radio) and analog AM/FM stations.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

iTunes Tagging: Using the headunit's iTunes Tagging enabled HD Radio, you can tag your HD music (up to 60 songs) while listening to the radio with your iPod connected. When you hear a song you enjoy on your local HD Radio station, you only have to press the headunit's "Tag" button and the song's information will be saved to your connected iPod. The saved songs will then show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the very next time you sync your iPod to your PC. Then you just need to click, buy, and download the song you tagged directly from the Apple iTunes Music Store.

Note: The following model iPods/iPhones support iTunes Tagging - iPod nano (3rd/4th/5th/6th), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th), iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4).

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Display Information: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC KD-AHD69.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-AHD69 can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-AHD69 to search both analog and digital radio stations,  only HD Radio stations, and analog radio stations only.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Direct2 tuner and the JVC CNP-JVC1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMJVC2, sold separately).
    • SIRIUS: The JVC KD-AHD69 is compatible with the SiriusConnect Universal Tuner and Plug & Play Dock.
      • SiriusConnect Tuner: Connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100) - package # 700SIRJVC1, sold separately.
      • SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100, sold separately) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1, sold separately).
    • Auxiliary Input: A portable XM or Sirius satellite radio receiver can be connected to the head unit via the front panel auxiliary input or a JVC auxiliary input adapter, such as the KS-U57 or KS-U58 (sold separately).
Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AHD69 can play MP3 (32-320 kbps)/WMA files (32-320 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from damage; playback starts automatically.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connection

USB Port: The JVC KD-AHD69 features a front panel USB 2.0 type-A port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device (FAT 12/16/32). The KD-AHD69 can recognize up to 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 65,025 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod Direct: The JVC KD-AHD69's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod. Menu options allow iPod control from the headunit or from the iPod itself. From the headunit's front-panel controls you can search your iPod/iPhone's music by Category (Playlist/Artist/Album/Song/Genre/Composer). The KD-AHD69 also supports Repeat and Random playback functions of your iPod/iPhone. Regardless of control mode, the KD-AHD69 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file text. The iPod/iPhone is also charged whenever it is connected with the head unit turned on. Review for future references and records

Written By dragonballz, Boston, MA on Sunday, December 01, 2013

I love the high pre-amp voltage for the subs. It works well playing music from the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5S using stored music or from radio apps. Buttons feel cheap but they work.

Only one complaint. In cold weather, around freezing temps, the radio doesn't respond. It only turns on and off, but when it is powered on, it is stuck on the start-up "JVC" text. No inputs will work. No buttons will work. Nothing. After about 10-15 minutes of warming up the vehicle, the radio will then work normally. The LCD screen refreshes very slow when it is cold.

Wonderful radio, very few complaints! Does everything I could ask for.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After using this radio for a while, I realize its value. The ability to match the dashboard is awesome, even though you don't use it much, just set it and forget it. This radio sounds so much better than the OEM radio, it was a night and day difference. The radio reception is great. HD sounds even better! Some of my local stations even have HD2 and HD3 stations, which you don't even know about unless you have an HD receiver. 7-band EQ is helpful, as are the 5V RCA's. My only complaints are some of the buttons are kind of small and don't have a solid-feeling press action, and the auto-clock set through HD stations doesn't work - for me at least, the clock never stays set if you have this enabled. I won't subtract a star for one useless function which is probably not the radio's fault anyways.

Great price & unit plus everything needed for the install

Written By Dave P, Buffalo, NY on Tuesday, April 19, 2011

This JVC had everything that I was looking for except dedicated preset buttons for the radio. I haven't used the radio much so I can't say how much I will miss the dedicated buttons but as others have said, you can manually tune in stations if you hold the seek buttons. This wasn't needed for finding the stations that I listen to even though I live in Buffalo, NY and some of my favorite channels broadcast from Toronto, ON. From my limited time using the radio, the stations came in clearer and stronger than the stock radio even when not on HD. I have not listened to much HD either though it's nice to not have any static with those channels. The menu interface is extremely simple once you learn the basic functions for each button. I immediately went to the Pro EQ for the 7 band EQ and started tailoring it to my liking. Without an amp, my speakers distort at higher volumes but that is normal when you're using the built-in amp. Once you get to know the systems limits you can start tuning the EQ and it sounds wonderful. I found myself enjoying the color options for the buttons and display even though I did not think that I would care. There are definitely certain colors that work better for daytime and some for nighttime. The sound that this unit produces seems even better than my last system and I'm not sure if it's because I have Infinity Kappas and JBL Power Series speakers now instead of just Infinity reference speakers or if the head unit just has a cleaner signal.

    Love this unit

Written By GCart, Poquoson, VA on Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Received this unit about 2 weeks ago. I purchased it through the advice of a Crutchfield adviser, and as always, they were dead on at meeting my needs. I was primarily interested in the built-in HD radio, with which I am extremely pleased. An incredible improvement over regular radio. Very easy to navigate/learn your way around the controls. Remarkable improvement in sound quality, and I'm only powering the factory speakers in my 2001 F150. As usual, the Crutchfield team was amazing in putting me on just the right product. Support and free accessories made the installation very simple and professional looking.

This was the first time i ever tried to install a car radio and i was a little intiminated; however, once i read the instructions and started the install, it was a breeze. The free manufacturer harness adapter that came with my unit made it extremely easy to do the job. I've gotten several compliments on my radio. I thought it looked good, but according to my friends it's a killer looking unit. After installing the radio i heard an immediate difference from my factory unit. Great radio. Usb, hd, and color change features are a big plus!!!!!!

This deck was shipped, delivered, priced, installed and operated exactly as promised. This is a great deal if you're interested in HD radio. I commute +70 minutes per day so this is important to me and Crutchfield came through with the right equipment and excellent instructions and support to install it myself.

    Well done Buzz/Crutchfield!

Love this stereo! Loaded 10 gigs of my music onto a 16 gig usb flash drive and it works GREAT!! My only complaint is I have soooooo much music at my fingertips I cant decide what to listen to and I'm always jumping around!

Easy to install, (NOTE: crutchfield and JVC did not supply me with hardware to mount the stereo to the plastic bracket.) I had to run to best buy and they were nice enough to give me the screws i needed.

The swap went smooth with the factory and the sound is FANTASTIC.

HD Radio is a VERY nice touch. Very noticeable difference, If you listen to AM Sports like me. You will love HD radio it turns a crappy AM station into a CLEAR FM sounding station.

Some people haven't read the manual...

Written By Scott, Puyallup, Washington on Thursday, March 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Several reviews have mentioned that this rig can't be manually tuned. YES IT CAN! The "scan" buttons, when pushed and HELD cause the radio to go into manual mode - "M" comes up on the display and now the scan buttons work as a manual tuner.

I was initially unhappy about no preset buttons. But I discovered that a touch of the menu button puts the display in "List" mode - now turning the knob scrolls through the presets. When you have the one you want, push the knob. It's actually faster and you don't have to remember what's in which preset. This ALSO means that all presets are in a single "bank". None of that FMI FMII FMIII stuff.

One very cool feature that I've never had on a radio - each source (CD, FM, USB...) has a separate pre-amp adjustment. If you've ever had a Sony where the CD had to be cranked about 6 numbers higher than the tuner (and then the tuner blows you out of the car when you remove the CD), you'll really appreciate this. Each mode can be adjusted separately so all are at equal volumes. And it's a simple menu function.

There is one thing that makes me nuts - the CLOCK is an either / or situation. If you have the display doing its cool HD tricks, the clock isn't displayed. The top line of the display always shows something useless like preset or track number; the clock should have been there.

Other than that I'm really happy with this. It sounds great and in terms of bang-for-the-buck, I think it would be hard to beat.

    Great Stereo

Written By Mark S, Reading,PA on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

I purchased this for my 2002 Ford F150 Super crew Cab and was surprised at how
easy it was to install and the sound is so much better than I thought it was
going to be. The wiring was easy the insert also was easy to install as well.
The Iphone playback is the greatest. Controls are easy to understand and
navigate. HD radio is awesome as well..can't beat it for the price. Only mistake
I made was ordering the brackets to remove the stock radio Crutchfield sent one
for free which I didn't know they were going to do. All in all a class company
    a great experience.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm writing specifically because I'm very happy with this unit. The menu system is the
easiest to learn and navigate of any I've owned (esp. Panasonic and Pioneer). Yes, I
can find the clock set without the owner's manual in my hand, though I did read through
the instructions just to understand the controls when I first installed. I love the USB for
mp3 playback. It resumes where it left off, I can navigate the entire list and choose, or
just skip through the folders/songs. The various menus are accessed by holding in
specific buttons for a few seconds. Once in the menu, you simply rotate the nob, press
to select, rotate to change, press to save. There is a "back" button so you don't have to
start at the top of the menu when you need to back up a step. The display (for color
setting) is divided, one setting for the knobs on the left, and one for the text box on the
right. Separate colors can be set for each, and can be different for headlights on vs.
headlights off (day/night). In the packaging was a tiny screw for locking in the faceplate
before installation, if you so choose. For the first few days, I listened to lots of different
music and tinkered with the EQ until I had just the sound I wanted. 7 bands are nice
compared to the usual 3. I run a small subwoofer to balance out the lows and added
one set of tweets to the upper dash to brighten the front in my car (before purchasing
this unit). Otherwise a stock setup and it sounds great.

Love the Arsenal. Clearly JVC paid attention when it designed this new unit. Receiver sensitivity is much better than first and second generation HDR units. AM performance in particular is much better, locking quickly to even the weakest signals. HD performance is excellent. I really like the front panel aux input and USB port, and the display -- particularly the different day/night color schemes -- is awesome.

Likes: - Excellent value for the money
    - Menu system makes sense and has a short learning curve
    - Plays just about everything -- analog/digital broadcasts, CDs and MP3s
    - The USB port will charge/power your MP3 player
    - Excellent configurable display

Dislikes: - No manual tuning -- seek only (makes it hard to tune a weak signal)
    - Does not decode RDS data from non-HD stations
    - Only 8 AM presets (FM has 16 -- why can't AM have 16??)

Great receiver at an affordable price. High power amp, would prefer preset buttons, but is OK without due to included remote. Only problem is the display. In the daytime the sun in Florida makes it almost impossible to see regardless of the color. I have dark tinted windows to! Put sunglasses on and display is completely impossible to see. I think this is a problem with all aftermarket receivers.

For the price, it's hard to beat the feature set of this head unit. As someone alluded to, the lack of preset buttons is a bummer. The user interface and menu structure for the simplest of things like fader, balance, and such is cumbersome at best. I paid about $50 more for my similar Alpine, and it was worth the higher cost.

Bought two of these. Got one for my car and then one for my wife's car a few months later. We both love it! Installation was (as always) a snap in both cars. The sound is fantastic in my 2002 Lancer and in my wife's 2006 Escape. The HD radio sounds great and the iPod interface works flawlessly with both my iPod Touch and my wife's Nano. We like the ability to change the display color to any number of different varieties. I strongly recommend this unit to anyone looking to upgrade their factory system. The features simply can't be beat at this price.

Really good radio for the price. The built in HD tuner sounds super clear. I originally checked with a local shop, but they wanted to charge me rediculous amounts of money for the harnesses and adaptor, which Crutchfield gave me for free. Ended up saving over $100 and received much better service.

I guess i am old school. To set radio statios you have to scan thru it only picks up the strong
stations. There are stations that are not the strongest but you can still pull them in. this radio
ignores those stations very annoying wish it had bottons. It takes forever to get to a playlist or
just a record you want to hear on the ipod if you have it in the mode where you control it from
the head unit. You put it in ipod mode you can control the selections from the ipod unit it self.I
cant be to negative. I have a Pontiac Grand Prix, I was able to match the variable color
display to the red dash lights. Heaven help me if i need work done and they disconnect the
battery. Then i will have to pull out the 100 page manuel again and start over

    Great Sound, Poor Tuner

Written By James O, Laguna Beach, CA on Tuesday, February 01, 2011

    Pros:
    1. Great sound. A pleasure to listen to.
    2. Easy to use. It didn't take long to figure it out.
    3. Easy to install.
    4. Versatile. I use it for radio, CD and MP3s via the USB jack in front. Love it.

    Cons:
    1. AM reception is execrable. My previous radio picked up any number of stations, this one *barely* picks the 50,000 watt clear channel station in my area.

    2. The tuner works by "seek" only--you can't manually make it go to a particular frequency. The seek rejects weak signals, so if the radio can't find your station by hunting for it, you can't force it to go there anyway. You have to wait until you get a strong enough signal to find it and then mark it in memory. I live in an area where there are a lot of listenable, but poor strength signals, so finding my favorite stations has been difficult and time consuming.

If this had a feature where I could manually dial in a frequency so I could put it in memory, I'd give this all five stars.

Very nice sound from both CD player, radio and iPod. Makes my 4-speaker system sound much better than did the factory-built unit. Love the iPod controls: Lots of features I haven't really explored yet, like tagging.
    Faceplate removal is very smooth.

    Smallish gripes:
The plastic controls feel soft and jiggly.
The key-sequences for setting the various options are counter-intuitive and for me at least, hard to remember. One should not have to RTFM for such matters.

My wife scored big when she ordered this radio for me as a Christmas present. The sound is is crisp, the ability to play and manipulate my IPod through the system is handy, and the HD function provides for greater listening diversity without the cost of satellite radio subscriptions. The system, while providing multiple listening options and adjustments, is not difficult to operate and the owner's manual has easy-to-follow directions. The greatest difficulty with the system is getting my daughter to settle on a single lighting scheme for the display.

    very nice sounding receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this receiver a month and a half ago and must say it really has a nice sound.the hd sounds better than some of my cds.
I bought this for radio and cds so as far as most of the other features I don't know, have used an mp-3 player with no probem.
The main problem I have is I can't get a signal lower than 72hz to the front and rear speakers which does bother me as I have no sub. but even so I have to say that this does have an amazing sound.
I read the manual and see no way to turn off the bypass filter that separates sub from the other speakers but I'll have to ask someone from cruthfield
As far as Cruthfield , they really are second to none.Ihad problems with installation and guy stayed on the phone the whole time until probem was solved and best of all he actually knew the problems without second guess, very very nice. thanks Cruthield for the free stuff and your Knowlagable staff you are indeed a rare find.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with the sound of this unit. I am not useing the USB like I thought I would since the interface is kind of hard to use. It is much easier to just use the headphone jack to aux and control my mp3s through the player. May not be worth the extra cost. I like the HD radio very much and there are several commercial free stations out there. One annoying thing about the HD is if the signal is weak it goes back and forth from analog to digital with a delay that will make it unlistenable. There may be a setting to turn this off but I haven't found it.

Bottom line...Looks Good, Sounds great, complicated interface. Buy it if you don't mind reading the manual a bit.

    Ford Ranger Sound system upgrade

Written By Roy G, Chuluota, Fl on Sunday, January 23, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just completed a total system upgrade in my Ranger...consiting of the JVC receiver, 4 new Polk MM571 2 way speakers and Sound ordinance powered sub B-8P...and I have to say I am totally impressed with how solid and clean this combination sounds! I did a ton of research and picked these components based on their specs, and it really delivers. The JVC receiver amp is impressive, pleanty of punch to drive the Polks, and I love the features, HD radio is fantastic, I pod input is great and the menues are easy to navigate. The sound quality and stereo stage is so dramatically improved, I want to continue driving around listening to tunes. the Polks deliver solid highs, great mids (drums have incredible impact and punch)and decent lows. I added the sub after breaking in the Polks for two weeks.....the 8BP fits nicely behind the drivers seat and delivers rock solid bass. Do not require a larger or more powerful sub for the extended ranger cab...pleanty of sound. I do recomment using the XTC baffles for the Polks...the sound punch does improve over no baffle

Nice fit for my 2007 Corolla

Written By Frank K, Madison WI on Tuesday, January 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I searched around for radio with HD and front USB support. I also wanted one that would have multiple color choices to match the two colors of my 2007 Toyota Corolla's dash. The two tone color options of this head unit fit the bill. The sound is huge improvement over the factory head unit. I don't find myself cranking up the volume as much as I used to cause I can actually hear it now. HD stations are definitely crystal clear.

USB support works fine and with a mini mobile flash drive from HP which is half the size of an ordinary flash drive, it doesn't look that bad sticking out. Tunes start playing rather quickly from the drive and even picks up where it left off after turning off the car.

The only downside that I must mention is the navigation buttons. They are a tad bit small and if you happen to be driving on a bumpy road its very hard to hit the right button on the first try.

Overall I'd recommend this unit. If you can get it as a scratch and dent like I did from Crutchfield, you can save money and not worry that there's anything wrong with it.

Written By jm, Stroudsburg, PA on Sunday, January 16, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy installation and great sound. My only complaints are minor:
    1) Trying to insert a CD when the unit is off doesn't turn the unit on (nor will the CD insert).
    2) When another source is on and you insert a CD, sometimes it will load (and play), sometimes it won't load.
    3) The unit is wired into the car's lighting system (so when you turn on your exterior lights the unit's lights dim, which makes sense), yet I don't understand why, at nighttime when the unit is off, that there are NO lights on at all on the unit. It makes one have to fumble to find the power button (which is too small and should not also be doing double-service as "input select").
    4) On a similar vein, why have a clock on the unit if - as noted in #3 - nothing is lit when the unit is off?

    Room for Options

Written By Phlip, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. on Wednesday, January 12, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this radio mainly for the HD factor, the idea that it has options to move between HD or not is a plus. I currently have a basic system with some upgraded speakers in all locations, with a few plans for expansion. The room this unit carries to allow for that expansion is tremendous. I always look to have a product that will move into the future of my plans. For just a basic radio alone, it does wonders, you will be pleased. My only gripe is that the ease of use takes some getting used to, but this could apply to anything new to you in general. The single line is a bit annoying but better than the small font of other units have. You always have the option of changing 'what' you want displayed while it sends a brief description of the information in the begining and reverts back to your preference. I am very happy with the product, Crutchfield is the best!!

Excellent Head Uint, Buy this one!

Written By Edward R, West Palm Beach, FL on Monday, January 03, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent many, many, hours comparing and contrasting different head units, and finally after literally 50+ hours of research I decided on this one, and am I glad I did.
Installation was simple, The Unit looks great with all of the many color combos available. The controls are pretty simple to use, the 7 band EQ is really nice for tweaking every little tone coming out of the speakers ( Bass, Low, Med-low, Med, Med-High, High, Ultra High), You can't get much more simple and practical than that. Also has 2 sets of 5 volt RCA outs, And a whittle itty bitty remote.
The HD Radio was quite surprising, I have never heard an HD station before, But I sure knew when I landed on one. The quality is practically CD quality, If not cleaner and "brighter" than a CD, Very nice and I'm sure will surprise anyone else who has not heard an HD station before, I also pick up about 8 more stations because of the HD tuner.
The ONLY issue I'm having right now is that when I'm playing music from my thumb drive, which sounds perfect (make sure you have high bit-rate songs), Every once in a great while it will just cut off, and I have to pull the drive out, and put it back in, and It just kicks right back into where it left off, If it continues ill call Crutchfield Support......
..(I did not feel like this deserved anything less then 5 stars, I try to be realistic and at least entertain the possibility that it's USER error and not the Head Unit.)

    Pretty nice radio.

Written By Zack W., Ohio on Sunday, December 26, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio a few months ago, the speaker deal it had made it a no-brainer. I love all the features this thing has, however it is not the most user friendly device out there. A lot of menu options are buried, so trying to change anything while driving is asking for trouble.

Overall sound has been rather good, I am using it to push a 600w RMS amp with 2 Kicker Comp 12's. Running Pioneer 6x8s in all the factory locations and the sound is nice and crisp. Volume stays a bit low until you really turn it, but there is an adjustment on the radio to compensate a little bit. I don't know why they didn't just throw a LOUD button on there and be done with it.

My biggest gripe however, is with the HD tuner. In my area, HD is majorly hit or miss. I love the fact that the radio auto-switches, but I also loathe that it does it. It is highly annoying listening to the radio when the songs are always stuttering due to the HD switching. This wouldn't be so bad if the radio had a setting to turn off HD, which it does, but the setting resets every time you power off the radio.

As you can imagine, having to remember to go in and change this setting back every time you start your car is just a bit uncalled for. Why JVC overlooked this is beyond me, but it's almost enough to make me replace this unit with something that has a static setting for HD switching. I have no iPod, so can't say anything regarding that. USB thumb drives work great though.

    Great Features - Great Price

Written By Mark B, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, December 14, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo works absolutely great. I will need a bit of time to come up to speed on the function of all the buttons, but .. just .. wow. Three main features drove me to this product:

HD Radio - I listen to AM quite a bit (Talk radio) and the sound difference as the radio begins in standard mode, then kicks into HD mode is astounding. AM sounds like FM.

iPod Integration - This is the main reason I needed a new radio. I do a lot of podcasts and A few years ago, I added an iPod integration kit to my factory Honda radio that stopped working.

Price - How can you beat it.

The sound is great, and has adequate power for my needs.

The last time I purchased a radio at Crutchfield was back in 1982. At the time, I was pretty adept at working on cars, which I am not so good with now. The website was fantastic at identifying which radios work with the car. The installation kit and car-specific instructions were FANTASTIC. Total installation time was about 45 minutes, in part because I was going really slow to make sure I did it right.

The only negative is that I hoped to also have the Bluetooth feature for Cell phone integration. JVC has a Bluetooth kit that works with this radio, but it is expensive. I don't understand how it is that the little bluetooth add-on is so expensive? I just could not justify the additional cost.

Overall, huge thumbs up for JVC and Crutchfield

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this reasonably priced receiver for my work truck. The install went OK after I called Crutchfield tech help. The reception of this radio is excellent, far better than to factory Ford receiver. Unfortunately I live too far away to get much HD radio as the range for HD is only 30 - 50 or so miles from the tower. When it comes in the sound is excellent. I still get those stations in ordinary stereo for almost 90 miles or more away. This radio has shown the shortcomings of the factory speakers (very cheap, no base). Now I need a small sub and better speakers. I recommend this receiver.

I was looking for a different radio for my BMW 318i convertible. I wanted one that had a front aux so I could listen to my IPhone. I did not know anything about the JVC Arsenal radio when I stumbled across it but now I'm sure glad I found it. Amazing sound quality for $160. Lots of great features and looks great installed in the bimmer dash. HD Radio staions are like listening to the CD. I have bought several brand name radios over the years but for the money I do not think you can get a bigger bang for your buck.

Great radio for the money. Great colors for buttons. You can set the bottons and dials
for just about any color you want. Having HD part of the radio is great, what a diffrence
with the sound. I use this deck with xm radio adapter with no issues. Easy to install you
self, just need to read the insturctions. The total time to install the deck about 2 hours
start to finish. Buttons are odd to remember, but once you remmeber how it is not an
issue. No preset buttons, you just scan through the presests, not hitting preeset
    buttons.

This receiver was just the ticket to wake up my 2004 Santa Fe. It sounds
incredible, even with the stock speakers (8) from my OEM Monsoon system.

I was a little unsure of how to put the power attenuator box in, but Joel
(Crutchfield Tech) was superb in assisting me today. He stayed with me until I
felt confident enough to tackle this job. When all was said and done - there
were "zero" problems installing this thing.

I will never buy another car stereo from anyone else - you guys are incredible.

I bought this to replace the factory stereo in my 99 Saturn SL2. Great sound, tons of features. Controls not quite as intuitive as my factory stereo, but that's more of a learning curve thing than a bad thing. I've had my car 12 years so I'm more than a little used to its' controls. Like the iPod and USB connectivity, and the HD radio features. Very pleased, super-fast Crutchfield shipping, and excellent instructions (as always).

    Decent for the money

This is a very decent cheap head unit with a lot of features (HD radio, good control over the coloring so it will match your car, good media interface).

It has some limitations. It sounds okay, not great, but that's to be expected at this price point. I've had some similarly priced units from other manufacturers that sound better.

Wish it had a USB port on the rear.

Clumsy interface controls, particularly when using a USB stick drive, the folder/track advance buttons are too close. No efficient way to quickly move through tracks in a folder, and it will forget folder position if you switch folders.

It plays almost anything, and the HD tuner is very good.

Crutchfield was very fast on delivery. I received their catalogs back in the 90s, first time I ever bought something from them. They forgot (or didn't know about/didn't offer) an antenna adapter for my particular car. No big deal, but someone who hadn't installed a HU before would have been stumped...

Overall a very nice receiver upgrade

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'm impressed with this receiver. Purchased it as an upgrade to a circa 1999 Sony CD receiver that I had in my '89 Mazda RX-7 Turbo (weekend car & track toy). Basically I wanted a receiver that I can play digital music via an ipod or USB stick so I wouldn't have to carry CDs (not much storage space in the '7!), and I figured I'd give HD radio a whirl. Neither feature has disappointed - this is a very good receiver for the $ and features. I also love the user selectable lighting for day/night use - for day I run it full white on black, which is readable in sunlight, and at night (when the car's lights are on), I have it set to the EXACT shade of red/amber to match the funky '80s RX7 lighting. I would have given it a 5/5 rating if it had a "smarter" power retractable antenna control line - basically, if you have a power retractable antenna, it will be up whenever this JVC receiver is turned on, regardless of input source (radio/CD/USB/Ipod). My 12 year old Sony was smart enough to drop the antenna if you switched sources from radio to CDs. My only other niggle is that this radio demands the user to spend more time than usual with the manual to figure out all of its settings and operation, but once that is done, the user interface is fairly intuitive and road worthy.

Great little radio. I had a friend assist me with the installation, mostly because he had all of the tools that we needed, and it took us about an hour. The instructions were spot on, and all of the included cables and accessories worked out great. I put this radio in my wife's car because her job has her driving all over the DFW area and she wanted to listen to the iPod in her car. The USB connection works out great, and once you figure out how to navigate your iPod through the Head Unit, then you are off to the races. I thought about replacing the speakers, but after putting this unit in and listening to how good it sounds through the factory speakers, I think I will wait. Well worth the price for this one.

If you know how to hook up a home theater system or even plug in a game system to your tv you will be able to install this receiver. This was the first time I attempted to install my own system...just out of pure laziness before...the radio is awesome 5v preamp outs 20x4 rms wattage, and the kicker is that it reads my playlist from my ipod without a fancy ipod connect cable...the cable i have works to CONTROL&CHARGE my ipod!!!! I will be setting up JVC 5.25 and 6x9 speakers this coming weekend JVS is a great mobile brand and will continue to use there products in the future!!!! no soldering or heat shrinking necessary...twist the wires (color coded) cap em...SET IT AND FORGET IT!!!

ABsolitely great - especially the USB connectivity

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I listen to a lot of public radio. Specifically, I record all my favorite shows over the weekend (Car Talk, etc). To date, I've listened to this during the week using a CD - while my Kia minivan's stereo can play mp3's-- the only way to hear them on my stereo was to burn (rw) CD's every week. Well, my stereo's cd reader died, so it was time to hunt for a new stereo... and I was hoping to find USB playback.

Well, this unit has it all. Not only does it have an HD Radio tuner (pretty incredible, by the way, if you've never done HD radio in your car yet...) - but the ability to plug in a tiny usb stick with all my radio shows on it is great. One feature I had only so-so behavior with my old stereo was playback memory-- I'd get back in my car, and fire up the CD again, and I'd be +/- 5 minutes of where I left off. THIS stereo? Resumes pretty much exactly where I left off. INCLUDING if the source was a usb drive, which is the best feature of all. No more cd's, I now plop all my music and radio shows in a micro-sized USB drive, and I'm good for weeks.

I got this for my birthday. What sold me on it was the price and the features. It has 5 volt amp preouts which are better than most that you will find. The HD radio is super clear and sounds as if youre listening to your Ipod or CD. The settings really let you fine tune your music.

I replaced my old sony headunit with it and this blows that thing out of the water.

Bought this deck a few weeks ago its awesome, i still got stock speakers (subaru) and they sounded terrible with this deck, the nice thing is that you can turn the amp off which helped a great deal. It has a high and low setting for the indeck amp i really liked that, seeing subaru speakers cant take any power. I dont care for the way you have to preset the radio but oh well i got it done know so who cares lol. The radio sounds great fm is so clear and the way am comes in omg. As for the HD stations i dont listen to the one in my area, oh well more to come soon, just a lot of talk radio on the HD if u into that. With that said there are many other oways to get fm stations that are far away and not coming in to good, you can change the radio to a mono mode which helps a good deal, i can listen to my football team and hear it now nice. I would buy this deck again and would let my best friend go and buy one also. Hope this helps.

This is exactly what I wanted to replace the OEM CD Receiver in my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe.
It has great features and great sound. I wanted a CD Receiver with built-in - HD Radio, 3.5mm Auxillary Input, and USB Input for my iPOD.

It was an incredible deal and very easy to install -- thanks to Crutchfield's Installation Manual and the free wiring harness, and installation kit.

My wife loves it too -- she wants one for her Hyundai Sonata.

    I expected better

Written By Rodney, Helena, AL on Sunday, November 07, 2010

I returned a Kenwood due to a problem. I let a Crutchfield advisor persuade me to get this JVC. At the time it was part of their Signature Series. The sound is OK and I like that I can fine tune the display colors to match my dash illumination, Beyond that I can't say anything good about it.

The cheap plastic buttons are difficult to press and the labels on the remote began to fade and wear off within the first 30 days, Doing anything with the front panel controls is impossibly difficult. When you have your hand on the controls your view of the display is blocked so that you can't see what menu selection you've made. When playing from USB or CD there is no search function on the remote. The HD radio reception is poor at best and nonexistent during a thunderstorm. Multicast stations take as long as 10 to 15 seconds to sync while you listen to dead air.

I wish I had returned this unit when I had the chance. It has lowered my opinion of JVC products as well as my opinion of Crutchfield recommendations.

For what it's worth, the price has come down considerably from when I made my purchase and it's no longer part of the Signature Series.

Ordered this product because it had all the features I was looking for, was well priced, a Crutchfield signature product, and for the great reviews it had. It was everything and more than I anticipated. The sound is amazing and the HD stations are awesome. Looks great in my CRV. The buttons are a little small, but workable. I thought I would be able to install it myself and was a little disappointed because it wasn't as straightforward as everyone claimed, but then again I've never installed a car stereo so what do you expect. I found a guy at my local auto shop and he installed it. Overall I am VERY pleased with this unit. I don't know why I waited so long to upgrade!

I did my research on HD radios with USB/AUX inputs for iPods and this was the one that kept staring back at me. The reviews are great and the price was right so I took the plunge. I couldn't believe how good it sounds! It replaced my 6 year old Alpine and I gotta tell ya, the JVC rivals it in sound quality. In fact, I like it better! I'm loving the USB connector for my flash drive and iPod. The one thing I was a little hesitant about was the lack of radio preset buttons. One or more reviewers wrote that you have to press a button, scroll through your presets, then press a button to select which sounded like a royal pain in the butt to me. Well, that is one way to do it (and it really isn't a big deal) but they overlooked the fact that you can also just simply press the up or down arrow and immediately access them that way too. A pleasant surprise for me and makes it even faster to access the channels. Buttons would really be ideal but this is not a deal breaker at all. And I'm no a tech guru but for me it was quite easy to set up and took little time. I love this radio! I live in LA so HD channels come in pretty consistant (depending where you live, your mileage may vary). For what this deck does though at the price it's at, you'd be hard pressed to find something better in its range. Both thumbs way up!

Ordered this radio, plus speakers and the wiring harness adapter, for a '94 Corvette. Crutchfield flubbed the order and didn't include the mounting kit, which set my install back a week (they did send it out but I was out of town when it arrived).

Installation was fairly simple, I had to fudge the brackets a bit to get it all lined up in the dash, but it does fit great...and for the inside of a 'Vette it sounds pretty darn good. Can't wait for a road trip to check out the HD function (no HD radios stations in my area yet).

The adjustable dash lights are awesome - the radio display now perfectly matches my orange speedometer dial and gauges - also dims with my dashboard lights.

It looks good and sounds great!

This is a nice head unit. I was specifically searching for a good DAC (digital to analog converter) so CD's would sound nice... and I wanted good bluetooth integration. The DAC is pretty good, I've heard better (Pioneer) but it's close enough and satisfying. I am a total audiophile, though and have high end taste. This was part of a budget system and for what it is, I am very pleased.

The Bluetooth integration is surprisingly good, both in ease of use and quality of conversation sound quality. I like that I can just turn the volume knob up or down during a call, or hit the volume knob to mute. I do wish it was easier to make a call with voice commands. It may be, I just haven't figured out how to set it up.

As has been stated, the menu navigation takes some getting used to.. but anyway, it's a solid performer and I hope stands the test of time.

Great unit, came bundled with JVC speakers with I used to replace the factory rear speakers in my 91 Firebird which happened to be a perfect fit. The instructions that came for the Firebird install were very helpful. The bundle came with all the adapters for the wire harness, antenna, and to use factory speaker wires. I wish the mounting kit that came with the bundle was a bit better. I had a little trouble with was getting it mounted securely, had to make my own brackets. I had to mod the factory rear mount to make room for the radio to fit it flush and make more of a factory fit. Really like the display color settings to match the rest of the dash lighting. Need to figure out what to do with the remote... maybe some velco... Sounds great!!! Lots of options and ways to play music. HD radio sound goods.
