Our take on the JVC Arsenal KD-AR470

JVC's Arsenal KD-AR470 CD/MP3 receiver features an attractively styled, fold-down face that's easy to read, along with a front-panel auxiliary input that gives you a convenient way to connect a variety of music players.

The premium-quality Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converter ensures your music sounds clean and natural. If you're in the mood to tweak the sound, the cEQ equalizer offers six preset tone curves along with controls to adjust the treble and bass output. The 4-volt preamp outputs ensure that external amps receive a strong, clear signal, and the built-in low-pass filter and subwoofer level control make it easy to adjust your system from the driver's seat.

The KD-AR470 provides plenty of entertainment options. It'll play MP3 and WMA files burned onto discs, and works with JVC's optional iPod adapter for dashboard control over your music library. You can also control a JVC CD changer or satellite radio from the faceplate, or use the handy front panel auxiliary input for your XM or SIRIUS plug-and-play radio.

Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-AR470 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 200 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc.

Custom Equalizer (C-EQ): In addition to manual bass and treble settings (-6dB to +6dB @ 100Hz and 10kHz), this unit also has six selectable preset tone control and loudness setting combinations. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Custom Equalizer modes are:

  • Rock: Bass = +3, Treble = +1, Loudness = On
  • Classic: Bass = +1, Treble = -2, Loudness = Off
  • Pops: Bass = +4, Treble = +1, Loudness = Off
  • Hip Hop: Bass = +2, Treble = 0, Loudness = On
  • Jazz: Bass = +2, Treble = +3, Loudness = Off
  • User: Bass = 0, Treble = 0, Loudness = Off

Loudness Control: The Loud feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at low volume level.

Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set the clock, choose the time zone, select the dimmer mode, select the external component type (changer or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display, switch between US standard and European tuning spacing, and set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low).

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AR470 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Title Assignment: The KD-AR470 allows you to assign names of up to 8 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum). You can also assign names of up to 32 characters for CDs (including a connected CD changer, but not MP3/WMA or CD Text discs--30 disc maximum).

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo mini-jack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The input level of the auxiliary input can be adjusted from 0 to 5.

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed). Note that the amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for Auto operation.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust (Disc will not play this time until you select a track).

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: The optional KS-PD100 adapter allows an iPod digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-AR470. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers directly from the head unit. Song titles and other file information show up right on the head unit display. The iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-AR470.

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-AR470 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK50). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking and Volume functions.

External Device Controls

CD Changer: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the KD-AR470 in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-JVC1 Satellite Tuner for JVC (item number 607SIRJVC1). The XMDirect2 CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner is compatible when used with the JVC CNP-JVC1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMJVC1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item number 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item number 105KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

great bang for the buck

Written By steven, new port richey, florida on Saturday, February 10, 2007

this is the 2nd jvc arsenal purchased from crutchfield. i LOVE this receiver and now it comes with mp3/wma playback capabilities. easy to install, easy to use. dash kit for my 2002 xterra looks great AND adds an extra storage bin (oem is a dbl din receiver). better reception than oem and it even makes the factory speakers sound better (they're getting replaced next). if you want to super customize your sound, may need to look for something else, this has basic bass/treble, fade/rt/lt controls and a handful of preset eq's. it did pass the "wife" test, though. she doesn't want to worry about "playing" with all the options, she just wants to turn it on, turn it up and enjoy the sounds, which she can do with ease. it has a rotary volume control which we both prefer. it's warrantee period is twice that of most receivers, which is a plus (even though my 1st one is still playing strong, so i doubt the warrantee will even be needed). you can spend a lot more if you really want a tricked out system, but if you're looking to maximize your listening pleasure at a reasonable price, i can't imagine doing much better than this!
