Our take on the JVC KD-AVX11

JVC's KD-AVX11 DVD receiver features a 2.7" color screen, so you get DVD playback and a large viewing area in a chassis that fits in a standard-sized dash opening. The driver-oriented button layout makes it easier to enter commands while driving, and the KD-AVX11 is compatible with the steering wheel controls in most vehicles.

The KD-AVX11 features a premium digital-to-analog converter for excellent audio quality, and it'll play back MP3, WAV, or WMA digital music files that you've recorded on CD or DVD. Your DVD movies will play on the integrated screen while your vehicle's parked, or your rear seat passengers can watch movies on an optional external monitor while you're driving.

You can add versatility to the KD-AVX11 with add-ons like JVC's Bluetooth® adapter for your compatible phone. Gold-plated audio/video inputs let you add external sources like a video camera or game console. Hook up an optional JVC iPod® adapter to tap into all your favorite stored digital music files, or connect a satellite radio to put even more listening options at your fingertips.

If you're looking to bring more depth to your music, add external amplifiers to the three sets of gold-plated preamp outputs. An amplifier defeat option lets you turn off the KD-AVX11's internal amp to minimize interference and noise through your amplified system.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Each EQ curve has a preset value for each of the 7 frequency bands. Any preset that is changed can be stored as User 1, User 2, and User 3. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AVX11 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Source Naming: The KD-AVX11 allows you to assign names of up to 16 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum), and a name up to 16 characters for a connected external component.

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item # 105KSU58) may be used to provide an audio only auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Dimmer: The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), On (display is always dimmed) or Time Set (lets you choose the hours when the display is dimmed). The amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit for Auto operation.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The KD-AVX11 has a "OE Remote" lead on the back panel. When used with the optional PAC SWI-JACK interface (item # 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult "Outfit My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD, you can play the tracks in random order.

Intro Play: In this mode, you can play the first 15 seconds of each track on a Video CD.

The optional KS-PD100 iPod interface is compatible with most iPods that have a dock connector, including the following models: iPod with dock connector (software version 2.3), iPod with Click Wheel (software version 3.1), iPod mini (software version 1.4), iPod photo (5th generation - software version 1.2), iPod nano (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th generation) and iPod classic (80, 120, 160GB).

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Everything but the 15secs of fame.

Written By Mark, Converse, TX on Friday, August 21, 2009

I've had this unit for about 1yr or so now. The picture quality (DVD) is pretty kewl and I love being able to fill a DVD with bunch of mp3s and wmas. I travel a lot, so I can put a dvd full of songs in and travel for over 13hrs and never hear the same song twice.

Here is the issue though, when the unit turns on, it takes about 15seconds before it reads the disc. Sometimes if it's too hot outside, it will not read the files on the disc.

All in all, I've enjoyed having it. I like everything about it. The only real complaint is having to wait for it to start playing. Gets a little annoying.

JVC KD-AVX11

Written By Katherine, Half Moon Bay, CA on Sunday, May 10, 2009

This stereo is hard to use, it is a hassle, and it is really irritating to scroll through my iPod. Given the chance, I would definitely not spend the $500 or so that I did on this.

High quality for price

Written By cw50, SoCal on Sunday, October 05, 2008

I was skeptical about this unit as I had a SX-850 with a scosche FAI-3 adapter on my factory mach460 system. It was worse than the OEM HU! I was somewhat wary of the typical 5V preouts hurting the amps. Figuring out that the mach460 uses 1.5V preouts, I thought the KDAX11's wimpy 2.5V preouts would be a good match for a direct hook up. And Yes... it was a great match. I'm glad I can now get rid of that FAI unit--a piece of junk I say. Having the preouts into the factory amps--all I can say is wow. The sounds come out very crisp. In Rock/Pop/R&B modes, the highs are well defined. In Dance mode, the bass comes on smoother, but puncher vs. the stock Mach460's HU's boomy, echo-y bass. I'm just amazed on how clean the sound is from this HU. The OEM boomy bass was muted from my aftermarket exhaust--not good. I can hear now with this HU. I was also surprised at the construction. I looked at one at a store and the flip face felt flimsy. But looks that was from abuse by being a floor model--my new unit is pretty solid like a Pioneer. Only chance I recommend JVC to do is make the [enter] button bigger--it feels too cheap.

As for the DVD player, just the screen is smaller (vs. the 3.5" of the AVX44), but it's very clear. For instance, I can almost make out the letters in the Martix--excellent for a 2.75" screen. It's a very cool feature and you can always hook up a second LCD on the A/V outs.

Conclusion: High sound quality and great player for the money.

JVC KD-AVX11

Written By john, nyc on Saturday, July 12, 2008

after 6 months of owning an infiniti i30, i decided that it was time to change out the bose system for something more updated. i saw this jvc dvd unit and was amazed by its features. this one is very user friendly compared to the newer jvc kamelon and matches up to the interior lights of the vehicle. the internal amp is pretty good. i have it mated to a set of infinity kappas and pioneer speakers and it sounds pretty good. i listen to hip hop so the best sound setting on the equalizer would be rock. It actually sound a little better than the bose system with the rock setting on the eq. as for the dvd playback its pretty good. it may have a small screen but it comes out clear. in conclusion, i think this is a good headunit for anyone who wants dvd, mp3 playback, and great sound for a budget price.

Somewhat Satisfied Customer

Written By Vince, Peoria, Az on Sunday, June 22, 2008

I just installed this unit yesterday. I purchased this because the original
factory stereo in my Honda Pilot worked with the radio but not the CD
player, and there was some kind of noise coming from the stereo. Any
whoo, the installation was pretty simple, although some things didn't make
much sense and were not clear when it came to the plastic housing. I think
it should be more clear. My CD's sound great from this stereo even with the
factory speakers. Overall, I'm happy with this unit, BUT I wish Crutchfield
would do some more research (and I'm sure it takes time) when it comes to
replacing the factory stereo. Since I had the entertainment system in this
SUV, I lost the functionality of the monitor and the sub! I would
think that there must be some way to intergrate the sub and the video
with the new aftermarket stereo.

Very Good DVD Player

Written By Russ, Drumore, PA on Wednesday, January 16, 2008

In putting together a system for my Chrysler LeBaron Convertible, I wanted a
good quality DVD player so I could listen to my collection of live music DVD's
from my favorite bands. The JVC seemed to fit the bill with all its features.
I was not disappointed with this chioce. The KD-AVX11 plays all of my disc formats,
and has many features for fine-tuning my system. The motorized screen has different viewing positions to make looking at the screen easy in any lighting condition.
With just a couple button presses, I can tune in the on board graphic EQ, and adjust my sub woofer for just the right amount of bass. I ran my 3.5" dash speakers off the JVC's internal amp, and I can adjust the amount of power it puts out to better match these speakers to my others. The player fit into my dash perfectly, even with all the wires I had plugged in to it. I installed the Sirius Sat. radio and it works great, with all the on-screen displays available and great sound.
Crutchfield was on the ball and very helpful with any and all questions I had during my install, and everything came out a-ok. Many thanks to Crutchfield, who has proved to me to be a reputable dealer with excellent service and products. As a true audiophile, I can appreciate the fine sounds comming out of my car now!

Well-rounded unit

Written By Michael, Bronx, NY on Saturday, December 29, 2007

I thought it would only be fair to drive around with this installed for at least a week before putting in my two cents. I'm very impressed with its performance. I'm not getting into installation details except to tell Volkswagen 99 & up drivers this will look great in your dash esp. if you choose the Simple Red wallpaper - everybody's gonna have a different experience depending on their own car and it has little to do with the stereo itself anyway.

You have plenty of flexibility in tweaking the sound with the source level adjustments, 7-band EQ, and internal high-pass and low-pass filters. I use the crossovers on both the stereo and my amps for my speakers and sub, so adjust according to your taste and setup. I'm pleased with the overall sound after taking the time to play with the controls and integrate it into my system.

The display is great for iPod, MP3/WMA CDs, and regular radio with it's 3 lines of text. I don't have satellite radio, but I'm sure it would do very well there too. I'm pleased with the iPod controls. I've seen other reviewers complain about the response time and level of control for other brands, I think this gets the job done. I'll review the adapter in detail on its own page. Of the few CDs I play in the car, they're all filled w/MP3s. Just like on an iPod, you can search your folders and files to look for another song without stopping the current song you're listening to. I don't listen to much radio these days, but the tuner does what its supposed to do. Even without the usual 1-6 buttons for presets along the bottom of the stereo, it's easy to set up, name & jump from one preset to the other using the up & down keys.

I have a separate DVD player that feeds into the A/V input, so I can't really comment on how this handles DVDs. In any case, my DVDs show up crisp through the input & I have no complaints. Keep in mind, this monitor is less than 3" so you're not gonna wow anybody. I look at DVD capability on this unit as icing on the cake instead of the main event. You'd be better off spending more $$$ and getting a full 6.5 or 7" screen if you plan to use a stereo mostly for DVD watching and putting on a show.

The instruction manual says I can fill a DVD or CD with MPEGs or JPEGs. I'll get back to you if one day I decide to burn some pics and homemade movies on disc and sit in the car.

Last I can't talk about bluetooth capability, I don't have the adapter.
