Our take on the JVC KD-AVX33

JVC's KD-AVX33 in-dash DVD receiver combines music and movie playback with built-in Bluetooth® technology. A 3.5" screen displays movies and music menus, and Bluetooth technology allows you to hear incoming calls through your stereo speakers. Hands-free calling makes your drive a little safer, and you can transfer up to 5,000 numbers from your phone to the KD-AVX33. If you have digital music files stored on your phone, you can stream them through the KD-AVX33. You can even display all your incoming text messages on the receiver's screen.

A high-powered internal amplifier and extensive sound-shaping controls make your music and movie soundtracks sound great. You can play a number of digital music formats on CD, or enjoy high-quality sound from DVD Audio. Use the screen to watch movies when you're parked, or view photos that you've stored on discs. Front, rear, subwoofer, and center channel preamp outputs allow you to set up a complete mobile theater.

JVC's optional iPod® adapter gives you control of your stored music. Add an optional rear-seat monitor — 2-zone mode lets you send movies to the back while you and your front seat passenger enjoy music. Pick up an optional satellite radio tuner and subscription, and enjoy a wide variety of music, sports, and entertainment in your vehicle.

It also has CD changer control, built-in Bluetooth capability, built-in surround sound processing, A/V line input, A/V line output, a USB input, is satellite radio ready, and has dual zone capability.

Monitor: The KD-AVX33 features a 3.5" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 LCD display. The pixel resolution of the display is 960 horizontal x 220 vertical (211,200 pixels total). The LCD serves as a video monitor and system information display.

Display Angle: The motorized display can be tilted (up) to one of four angles.

Digital to Analog Converters: For high quality audio and video performance JVC uses a 192 kHz/24-bit audio DAC and a 108 MHz/12-bit video DAC.

Source Volume Control: The volume of each source (other than FM radio) can be adjusted relative to the FM volume, so the level is constant as you change from one input to another.

Wallpaper: You can choose from 15 background wallpapers; Future-Blue, Future-Green, Wave-Blue, Wave-Green, Wave-Pink, Metal-A, Metal-B, Ball-A, Ball-B, Ball-C, Dolphin, Simple-Red, Simple-Purple, Simple-Blue, and Simple-Gray.

Selectable Aspect Modes: You can choose from four aspect modes for the in-dash display:

  • Regular: for 4:3 source material, 4:3 and 16:9 pictures display with black bars on either side (16:9 images are compressed)
  • Full: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height
  • Auto: the correct aspect mode is automatically chosen based on the disc

Monitor Type: You can choose one of the following monitor types for the output to the external monitor(s):

  • 16:9: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9
  • 4:3 Letter Box: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen
  • 4:3 Pan Scan: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3, when viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on screen

7-Band Equalizer: Along with a flat preset, there are eight preset EQ curves and three user programmable fields; Hard Rock, R&B, Pop, Jazz, Dance, Country, Reggae, Classic, User 1, User 2, and User 3. The user presets can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For each User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -10dB to +10dB in 2dB increments.

Speaker Size: Like home surround receivers, you can adjust the following speaker size settings:

  • Front: Small or Large
  • Center: Small, Large, or None
  • Rear: Small, Large, or None
  • Subwoofer: On or Off

Speaker Level: You can adjust the output level of each individual speaker relative to the main volume from -10 dB to +10 dB.

Speaker Distance: You can adjust the speaker output timing separately for each individual speaker (excluding the subwoofer) according to the distance from the speakers to the listening position. The distance for each speaker can be adjusted from 6" to 240" in 6" increments.

Compressed File Playback: The KD-AVX33 can play MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC, JPEG, DivX, MPEG1, and MPEG2 files recorded on DVD-R, DVD-RW ,DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. MP3 and WMA files with bit rates from 32-320 kbps and AAC files with bit rates from 16-320 kbps are supported. DivX versions 6.x, 5.x, 4.x, and 3.11 with resolutions 720 x 576 or less are supported.

Dual Zone Capable: The line level audio/video output allows you to route DVD (or other disc) playback to an optional back seat monitor and headphone system, allowing front seat passengers to enjoy any other source except USB input. You can also turn on a Headphone Surround feature for the rear audio output.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-AVX33 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to low, the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to high, and the volume control will range from 0 to 50. The internal amp can also be turned of when all the speakers are powered by outboard amplifiers.

Source Naming: The KD-AVX33 allows you to assign names of up to 16 characters each for the A/V input, the EXT input (connected to the CD changer input using an optional adapter), and up to 30 AM and FM stations.

Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 5 volt front and rear stereo preamp outputs, this unit has single preamp outputs for the Subwoofer and center channel, each also 5 volts. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from -6 to +8, and a selectable phase setting that can be adjusted to Normal or Reverse. A second audio output is RCA stereo outputs for the rear zone.

Crossover: The KD-AVX33 has an internal crossover that allows you to choose 80, 120, or 150 Hz. This crossover acts as a low-pass filter for the subwoofer preamp output and a high-pass filter for the other speakers (front, center, and rear) set to the Small setting.

Audio/Video Input: The audio/video input can be set to one of the following modes:

  • Off: when nothing is connected
  • Audio + Video: choose when connecting an A/V component like a VCR
  • Audio: choose when connecting an audio component like a cassette deck
  • Camera: when a rear view camera is connected
  • Camera Mirror: shows the mirror image of the rear camera
  • Navigation: displays map from an outboard navigation system

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item number 105KSU57 or 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The KD-AVX33 has a steering remote control jack on the preamp output harness. When used with the optional SWI-JACK interface (item number 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. Once the phone connection is made the head is ready to receive calls while you listen to other sources. You can store up to 6 phone numbers as presets for one-touch dialing, dial from your Phonebook, dial from the list of received or missed calls, or dial a number manually using the remote control. Voice activated dialing is available if your phone is so equipped. You can answer incoming calls manually or automatically, or set the unit to automatically reject all incoming calls.
  • BT Audio: In addition to Bluetooth phones, the KD-AVX33 supports Bluetooth equipped audio players. You can connect wirelessly and listen to the player, and in some cases control the player as well.

For the unit to recognize the USB medium, it must be specified as a mass storage device formatted using FAT 12, FAT 16, or FAT 32. The unit can recognize a total of 5000 files and 250 folders (a folder may contain a maximum of 999 files). A USB cap is supplied to place over the USB input when it's not in use.

Changer Controls: This unit is equipped with JVC's J-Link CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer, item number 257CHX1500. Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

JVC KD-AVX33 In-dash DVD/CD receiver

Written By Alan, Walnut Creek, CA on Monday, April 14, 2008

Installation was
straightforward if a
bit time consuming.
Sound quality for
movies is very good,
iPod excellent,
am/fm adequate to
very good. Did not
test the remaining
inputs and outputs
for audio or video.
I have a 3rd gen 40
GB iPod connected
via the iPod adapter
and is recognized
and played back
without issue.
Navigating the iPod
through the JVC is a
little clunky and
takes some time to
get used to.
Shuffle or Playlist
playback are best.
Far superior to the
Griffin iTrip or
other FM
transmitters for
sound quality.
Tested the USB
connection for
functionality with a
160GB USB powered
hard drive. The
drive was recognized
without issue and
played back a couple
of random tracks
that happened to be
on it. DVD Audio
and Video worked as
expected. Video
screen and image
look good. Overall
menu navigation and
interface are fairly
easy to learn and
use. I realy like
this unit and the
options it offers
and would recommend
it to anyone. Minor
gripes include the
clunky iPod
navigation and the
apparent inability
to apply Dolby Pro
Logic II processing
to non DVD sources
(perhaps I missed
something in the
manual).

JVC KD-AVX33

Written By Ruben, Denver, CO on Tuesday, March 18, 2008

This is a really good stereo. I normally prefer Pioneer but this had good reviews and everything built-in so I had to put it in my 04 jeep liberty. i was skeptic at first but when it arrived it did everything the reviews said it would plus more. the bluetooth sounds good there is no echo on the other side. i also got the JVC iPod adapter and the AVX 33 treats it as it would any other source. i have the SWI-JACK from PAC so my steering wheels buttons still work seemlessly with the AVX 33. better then the included remote! which has ALOT of cool features the picture on the 3.5" looks clearer then my 7" monitor in the back seat. the only draw-back and reason i give it 4 stars is the wallpapers it offers are not that cool and there isn't that many. to me that is a big deal cause i like to show it off, but to some it might not matter. and another BIG thing is that you can't play DVD's while driving in the front. all-in-all it is a good product if could ever get over the wallpaper thing. with all these features built-in you'd pay alot more with Pioneer and those other big brands to get half of what this JVC AVX-33 can do. so if it sounds to good to be true then buy it cause it is true. everything works and exceded my expectations which are high when it comes to my jeep.

Solid Head Unit

Written By Josh, Sioux Falls, SD on Tuesday, February 12, 2008

I installed this in my BMW 325I and am very happy with the result. If you are looking for a single DIN DVD player with lots of features, this unit is for you. The built-in bluetooth is one of the main features of why I purchased the unit and the actual hands free calling feature works really well. I was concerned that it may have a "hollow" sound or cheap speaker phone sound on the caller's end, but I have not had any complaints yet. One downside with the phone feature is that the caller ID function does not work with my phone. I have a Samsung SCH-U420 and I am guessing that my phone does not support that feature. JVC should allow you to at least manually load phone numbers and names to use this feature, but there are only 6 preset phone number slots, and you can't assign names to them. Bummer.

The display is very good in my opinion, and the tilt feature on the AVX33 allows you to adjust it to maximize the viewing angle, which is a great feature. I use it to match the slope of my dash, so it looks like the unit is supposed to be there. Also, the display can be seen well with polarized sunglasses, which is not true for all displays. If you own a pair, there is nothing worse than having to take off your sunglasses every time you navigate through the menus.

The only other downside that I have noticed is the wallpaper selection is terrible. JVC puts together a nice unit and loads wallpaper that doesn't show off the screen's capability like it should. The screen is the focal point of my dash and I want to show it off! What was JVC thinking? If they can't put on a decent wallpaper selection, they should at least allow you to load your own from the USB. Big bummer.

-Would I buy the unit again? YES!

-Would I recommend to a friend? YES!

Even though there are a few gripes, the AVX33 is loaded with great features for the price. Really nice unit. Overall, very happy with product.

JVC KD-AVX33

Written By Paul, Ohio on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I absolutely love this unit. Everything works perfectly, and I can't believe how well thought out all the inputs are.

I only have 2 complaints, and both are insignificant:
1) It takes about 20 seconds to read my portable hard drive. Not a big deal.
2) you can't add custom wallpaper. You can put JPG images on a CD and view them on the screen, but can't make them your wallpaper. I consider this a miss.

I would gladly buy this unit again, and would probably pay more for it than I did this time. (Don't go raising prices now Crutchfield!)

Best Head unit I've ever had

Written By joe, pinellas park, florida on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I have always used Kenwood Excelon head units but the copper ribbon that connected the face plate to the unit would crack over about 2 years. I was sick of having to solder in new ones but didn't want to lose the system E that they have for the crossover. JVC's user interface is very easy to use. I haven't needed the manual yet and have had it for two weeks. The install was easy even with having to run wires to the factory installed amp. I have a 2006 eclipse with the rock ford system and thought the speakers were terrible but after installing the new head they kick. One less thing to replace. The TV is crystal clear and the credits are the only thing hard to see at the end of a movie but how reads them anyway. the factory set crossovers are great and can be changed to what ever you want and there are also user ones to customize.
Bottom line the head is great and Crutchfield's tech support is wonderful. they even knew what color the reverse light wire was for my car. Install was a snap because of them.

Not good -- GREAT!!!

Written By Mark, Phoenix on Thursday, August 16, 2007

This head unit does so much, and does everything so well! I wanted to clear up one issue that another reviewer commented on. If you have more than one type of media (music, video, pictures) on an external hard drive, and you connect it via the USB input, this unit WILL support all types of media found; you just need to tell it which type to display. To do this, you simply go to the Setup menu, choose Disc Setup 1, and then select the File Type (Audio, Still Picture, or Video). That's it! The unit will then start playing files of the type selected.

I highly recommend this unit. For the price, you just can't beat the functionality.

Best deck I have ever owned!

Written By django, Yukon, OK on Thursday, July 05, 2007

I just installed this the other day and am already in love with it. This deck is awesome, but there could be a few improvements like a customizable screen saver, or the ability to play different file types from a mixed disc. The only other feature I would want is the capability to add-on HD radio.

Here is what I learned so far: I plugged in a SD card reader with a 4GB SD card (non-SDHC) and it works great. I was able to download a bunch of music videos. To download the DIVX files directly you need to find a video, click view source, search page for "/.divx" (without the quotes), copy and paste that link into your browser. You can then save a divx music video file straight to a thumb drive, CD, or DVD to play on the unit. When playing the file, you must turn surround sound to 'OFF'. Quality is great.

I can also copy Tivo files to the unit. Transfer the file to your computer's hard drive, then use 'Direct Show Dump Utility' (free) to remove the encryption. You can then burn to a DVD, thumb drive, or SD card.

The sound quality of the phone is great. My phone Siemens SX-66 will not send caller ID or address book to the deck but it is still a great feature.

Great Product

Written By rondawg, San Diego, Ca on Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Great receiver! The sound is very good. Many Eq options to choose from, including 3 personal settings. The DVD picture is very clear, and the sound mode for movies is theatre like. User manual is semi friendly, but nothing out of the ordinary. Great deck... highly reccomend!

JVC KD-AVX33 a real class act

Written By ted, Sierra Vista Arizona on Wednesday, June 06, 2007

What really needs to be covered here is the fact that this is a din Dolby 5.1/DTS head with video. If you own a din dash and want 5.1/DTS this is an incredible piece of equipment. Thank you Crutchfield for recommending this piece of equipment to me. There is nothing that cannot be adjusted from speaker distance to test tone volume adjustment for each speaker L and R front, Center, L and R rear and subwoofer. Download the owner's manual form JVC. If you have not been around 5.1 in a car (sit in a Acura RL or the like) then you are truly missing a total music experience. The only thing this head will not do is show album art. I am using a hands free Bluetooth system integrated into the mute feature of the JVC KD-AVX3333 so I cannot comment on the Bluetooth capability. I have subjected this unit to each and every kind of media I have, DVD-R mp3, DVD wma, ripped DVD-audio disks, they all play just fine. Again, if you want 5.1 in your car this is one of the very few din decks that will do it and with class. You will not be disappointed. Install the deck and all the 5.1 speaker requirements, then go find Diana Krall's DVD Live In Paris - then you will know.

Never installed a radio before today!

Written By Fade, New Hampshire on Friday, June 01, 2007

My infinity speakers Arrived last week and my stereo today.
I have never attempted to install a stereo until today and as a IT Manager I was hoping it would work as easy as it looked online.
First thing: S/H and Packaging gets a A+
Second thing: Confusion at the 5 different directions that came with it. But after sweating and saying to myself you can handle this, I chose to sit in my truck and read. The directions need to tell you plainly that you need to put these wires together. Once I figured that out I was cranking to "Staind"
Third thing: The emergency brake override not allowing you to watch a dvd while driving is annoying.
Fourth: Once I hooked everthing up it was heaven. All phones worked with the bluetooth RazerV3 and the Krazer.
Fifth thing:The overall setup was a little overwhelming but I made it through.

Stereo:
The stereo is just fantastic and so was the crutchfield help that I received when I choose this product. I can not find anything bad about this unit.
Kudos to CF!!! Every thing that I needed was right there and I didn't even need to call techsupport... Although at first I wanted to.

Recommendation... I give this and the experiance of my first radio a ***5***

Thank you Crutch Field
