Our take on the JVC KD-HDW10

More and more stations are offering HD Radio broadcasts every day. JVC builds an HD Radio tuner into the KD-HDW10 CD receiver, so you'll have everything you need to hear the enhanced digital sound quality and additional programming choices HD Radio has to offer. No HD Radio stations in your area yet? JVC's AM/FM tuner offers excellent reception of standard analog signals.

The powerful built-in amplifier will ensure great performances from all your music. The KD-HDW10 offers six preset sound curves for quick tone changes, along with a 7-band graphic equalizer for fine-tuning your sound. SRS Circle Surround Auto™ delivers convincing surround sound from your car's speakers, even with standard stereo CDs.

If you're looking for more options, connect an XM or SIRIUS satellite radio tuner to get more than 120 channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment. The KD-HDW10 can also handle the MP3 and WMA music files that you've burned to CD-R and CD-RW discs — up to 10 hours on a single disc.

Use JVC's optional iPod® interface to connect your iPod to the KD-HDW10. The control knob on the faceplate mimics your iPod's click wheel for intuitive menu scanning and song selection. The included remote control gives you additional control over audio features.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Features

MOS-FET Amplifier: The JVC CD player features a CEA-2006 compliant MOS-FET 20 Watts RMX x 4-channel amplifier in 4ohms at 1% THD+N with an 80 dBA signal-to-noise-ratio.

DiAS Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's Digital Intelligent Advanced Sensing tuner, offering unprecedented analog radio performance with higher sensitivity and selectivity. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception. In addition, AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. Many HD Radio stations also offer more than one channel of programming. This service is called multicasting. You can setup the KD-HDW10 to search only HD Radio stations. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit www.hdradio.com.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-HDW10 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 200 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set the clock, choose the time zone and daylight saving time, select the dimmer mode, select the external component type (changer or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display, set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low), and several other operational settings.

Intelligent EQ (7-Band iEQ): This model has Rock, Classic, Pops, Hip Hop, Jazz, and User preset EQ curves. The User preset can be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. For the User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5dB in 1dB increments.

SRS CS Automotive: SRS Circle Surround Automotive (CS Auto) lets you experience a natural sound field anywhere in the vehicle, unlike other sound field manipulation methods such as time delay. The SRS Circle Surround II decoder converts a stereo signal into multichannel sound. SRS Focus elevates the sound field to an optimal listening level, while SRS TruBass creates rich bass, even without using a subwoofer. SRS Focus can be applied independently to front and rear speakers. SRS TruBass can be applied independently to front and rear speakers and the subwoofer. You can choose from the following presets:

  • Type A: systems with large front speakers with tweeters and rear deck speakers
  • Type B: systems with large front speakers with tweeters and door-mounted rear speakers
  • Type C: systems with small front speakers and door-mounted rear speakers
  • User: allows you to store your own setting

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDW10 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 2.5V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit has a set of 2.0V subwoofer preamp outputs. The subwoofer output has independent level control, adjustable from 00 to 08, and a selectable low-pass crossover. You can select a cutoff frequency of 90, 135, or 180Hz.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust; playback starts automatically.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Dimmer: When 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead and the dimmer set to Auto, the display dims. The dimmer can also be set to Off (normal brightness at all times) or On (display is always dimmed).

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off. In the PSM menu, the clock can be set to display with the unit on or off, only turning off when the ignition is turned off ("keyed" operation).

Wireless Remote Control: The KD-HDW10 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK50). The remote contains Power, Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking and Volume functions.

External Device Controls

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: You can connect your iPod to the KD-HDW10 J-Bus port using the optional JVC KS-PD100 iPod Interface Adapter (257KSPD100, sold separately). This optional iPod Interface Adapter supports audio playback for the following iPod models - iPod (3rd/4th generation), iPod photo, iPod mini, iPod nano (1st/2nd/3rd generation), iPod video (5th generation), and iPod classic. You can search for music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast and Genre. You can also select Repeat (One/All) and Random (Song/Album) modes. In addition, your iPod will charge when connected to the KS-PD100 iPod interface.

Satellite Radio: This unit supports both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio when used with the optional Satellite Radio tuner and adapter (sold separately. The KD-HDW10 supports the Sirius Connect Universal Vehicle tuner and JVC KS-SRA100 Sirius Satellite Radio interface (700SIRJVC1, sold separately). Currently there is no XM adapter available for this unit.

Changer Controls: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Bus" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item number 105KSU57 or 257KSU58) may be used to provide an additional  auxiliary audio only input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

JVC KD-HDW10

Written By , Indiana on Saturday, November 29, 2008

This is the most powerful unit I have ever installed in my car. Bass and fine
tuning controls are better than the three previous radios. Just take time to
read over all the optional settings. I guess the hd is ok, really not sure
what to expect when I did put it in. Seems somewhat clearer compared to
other stations. I was going to buy another one but it is now discontinuted

Overall Great

Written By Just J, Jupiter, FL on Monday, October 27, 2008

Unit is overall great, HD in general is not all it's cracked up to be, I think anyone could do with out considering sound quality but HD is great for not hearing all the morning talk stuff.
The unit's only drawback when used with JVC KSPD100 IPOD adapter is that when you listen to a song from an album you cannot access the menu from where you are, you have to start from the beginning which can divert your attention from the road longer than you typically would like.

Weak Ipod Connection

Written By jeff, New York on Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Good stereo for the money -- especially with the HD rebate. But the HD is ultimately underwhelming. The much-hyped CD-quality sound is basically the exact same as an FM signal -- maybe slightly better.

The Ipod interface here is straightup bad. First, there's no built in input. So I added the Ipod control module, and it magically turns the Ipod into a just another cheap MP3 player. The controls are slow and the navigation isnt intuitive. And there are not enough characters on the display to understand
what you're looking at. I'm sending back the Ipod adapter and buying a standard input cable, which will let me control the Ipod with the Ipod -- not the JVC deck.

No Better HD Unit for the Money!

Written By Aaron, Oklahoma City, OK on Friday, September 26, 2008

Hello all,

I bought this receiver a little over a month ago and I am so glad I did. For the price, all of the features this unit packs are awesome! HD radio (which
rocks), CD, MP3, WMA, optional input, RCA's, etc, etc, etc....

Some people have complained about the remote functions, I don't know what they are complaining about. The remote works fine and is small; of
course it won't do everything the face controls do!!! The sound is nice and clear, the SRS is great, and the attenuator button is great (both on the remote and face). The unit does not heat up like many other brands and this is a good thing as less heat means longer life. The display is not distracting with a bunch of super-bright colors and flashing lights. It
displays the important stuff and that's about it.

This price for a product which packs all of these features is amazing. I was even able to get a rebate from HD Radio, so it makes the deal even
better. After shipping, this radio is a steal considering all of the features that JVC packs in. You even get a face plate case!!! Who sends
those with their radios anymore?

If you are looking for a well built, inexpensive, feature packed HD radio, then I would highly recommend this unit; you won't be disappointed!!!

Very nice sound

Written By Peter, CA on Friday, September 26, 2008

This stereo is very easy to install with the Crutchfield harness. The wiring harness is totally worth the money. Using the harness, it took me about an hour to install the stereo and 4 new speakers. Make sure you have either a soldering gun and solder or the screw-on connectors to connect your Crutchfield harness to the JVC harness.

The sound of this stereo vs my stock system is just amazing. I have a '99 Mazda 626 with 4 speakers, and it used to sound like all of the music came from the rear. With the surround sound turned on, the music sounds a lot fuller and comes more from the front. I also got the JVC iPod controller, which works great. The only drawback is that you can't listen to podcasts, just playlists, unless you put your podcast into a playlist (but then you have to start from the beginning each time). The HD radio sounds good, but the FM quality is about as good as a CD anyway.

Some of the buttons are very small, and I find myself staring at the radio rather than watching the road, especially when fooling with the iPod.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this radio.

Fantastic receiver/player for the money!

Written By Peter, Black Diamond,WA on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

I installed this unit in my 1969 Camaro Convertible (the dash was already
cut). I really didn't know what to expect when I ordered this unit, as I've
found in car stereo you often get what you pay for.

After installing it and firing it up, I was absolutely amazed! The Surround
Sound option wakes everything up, and the equalizer allows you to tailor fit
your music to your liking. With the HD and other options (including 6 RC
plugins, with one being a dedicated subwoofer out), this deck performs as
well as others 3 or 4 times the cost!

Having the ability to control the JVC CD Changers' 12 disc capacity is the
icing on the cake! If you are considering buying a CD Sereo head unit, you
won't be at all disappointed in your purchase.

Full featured CD Receiver at great price!

Written By , Houston, TX on Saturday, September 20, 2008

This CD receiver offers some great features at a very low starting price. I decided to upgrade my Jeep Cherokee's system and did some research on this price range. No manufacture offers what this receiver does. It includes HD radio and iPod connectivity at this price range. The addition of the JVC KSPD100 adapter for the ipod, is an unbeatable total price for the CD deck, HD radio, and iPod integration. It also features a MOSFET amplifier, 3 additional sets of preamp outputs (2 are for bass freq.), and the SRS circle surround that adds a new dimension of sound to your vehicle.

Pros:
Receiver, HD Radio, and iPod connection.
SRS Circle Surround, that makes a big difference on the sound.
Gain Control for factory speakers.
All the outputs future upgrades.

Cons:
Small Controls on the face of the unit
The Volume knob is very slippery makes it difficult to adjust volume quickly.
Interface not too user friendly. Must read the manual to set clock, for instance, and do other simple functions that are sometimes natural on other receivers.
Remote Control basically useless, specially that it does not changes from HD1 to HD2 on HD Radio and rather changes band from FM1 to FM2 and so on.

Overall, this is a great unit for this price range, specially if adding the iPod adapter. The addition of the extra outputs makes this a sweet deal since you can upgrade your vehicle's sound in the future with less effort.

The best radio at this price

Written By Jared, Murfreesboro TN on Thursday, September 18, 2008

This radio is awesome, even though HD radio is highly overrated. If this radio didn't have it built in, I would never use it.

Excellent for the price

Written By Jim, Tacoma, WA on Tuesday, September 16, 2008

I needed an inexpensive radio for my older Jeep, one that was inexpensive enough to not worry about getting stolen. Can't beat it for that price.

The good----(IMHO)
HD Radio - EXCELLENT for riding the mountain trails in the jeep. Can't get regular FM worth a hoot where I go, but as soon as the HD tuner locks in,
sounds just like I dropped in a CD, no multipath distortion, only once did I have a complete HD signal drop out---and there was no radio station to be
had at all at that point.
MP3 - It can randomize in a single folder of MP3's(eg, rock, country, 70s, etc), or randomize a whole disc. And it DID NOT skip on even the hairy-est
of rock crawl-4x4 low-1st gear-pedal to the floor-trails.

Not so good----
The EQ makes no effect on the subwoofer output. If you crank up the 60Hz control, it only makes an adjustment to the dash/rear speakers, the sub isn't EQ'd. (if someone CAN, let me know!)
Remote is extremely small. Very non-ergonomic friendly being so small. The thing is only slightly larger than my thumb!

I gave it 5 stars, though, because there's no way you'll find a better deal.
