Our take on the JVC KD-HDR71BT

by Zak Billmeier
JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

JVC KD-HDR71BT

HD Radio™, hands-free calling, plus music streaming and apps
Are you a lover of local radio? JVC's KD-HDR71BT CD receiver kicks it up a notch with a built-in HD Radio tuner that pumps up the sound quality to near-CD level, while making AM broadcasts sound like traditional FM. And since stations can broadcast multiple channels on the same frequency, you may find you have more choices than ever before.

JVC gives you Bluetooth® with this receiver too. Pair up your iPhone®, Android™ smartphone, or Blackberry™, and you'll be able to receive text message notification, stream music, or access Internet radio stations, depending on your phone's features. You can also pair two phones at once, so there's no need to choose between your personal and business phones. When a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, so you'll know at a glance if your call is coming from home or the office. To answer a call, just tap the volume knob.

Great for Android smartphones
JVC's Android app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control receiver functions using finger swipes and gestures — for example, tap the screen to play and pause, or swipe right to skip forward a track. So pop your Android phone in a mount, and you can reach down to skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

Control Pandora® Internet radio
JVC makes it easy to play your favorite Pandora stations. iPhone users can control Pandora when connected to the USB slot, while Android and Blackberry owners get full control of Pandora through the Bluetooth connection, depending on your phone's features.

Higher-power USB connection
JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to its internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    HD Radio + Sirius Ready

Built-in HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio technology significantly improves audio quality and reception, as well as includes information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality sound with static free and clear reception.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting, it is possible to choose from up to 8 multicast programs (HD1 to HD8 and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

Text Display: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the JVC KD-HDR71BT.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs.

Note: Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.

Analog Broadcasts: In addition to HD AM/FM stations, the KD-HDR71BT can also receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Digital/Analog Tuning: You can setup the KD-HDR71BT to search both analog and digital radio stations, only HD Radio stations, or analog radio stations only.

Digital/Analog Presets: You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM digital/analog presets stations as presets (HD Radio multicast channels can also be preset). Presets can be set manually or automatically, using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM).

Radio Timer: You can tune into a preset station at a specific time regardless of the head unit's current source. You can activate the Radio Timer once, daily, or turn it completely off.

Mono Mode: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

IF Filter: You can also switch the analog tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

Satellite Radio Ready: Optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receivers can be connected to the KD-HDR71BT:

    • SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable Sirius radios (Stiletto, Sportster, Starmate, and Stratus) can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item # 105KSRA100) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item # 607SCVDOC1) - package # 700JVCSIRP, sold separately.
    • XM: A portable XM satellite radio tuner can be connected to the head unit's auxiliary input.
Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

    Built-in Bluetooth

USB Bluetooth Adapter: The JVC KD-HDR71BT comes supplied with a USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) which is pre-installed into the head unit's rear-panel USB input, making the KD-HDR71BT Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR certified. The KD-HDR71BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless audio streaming.

Note: The USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) must remain plugged into the rear-panel USB port, or can also be installed in the head unit's front-panel USB port.

Bluetooth Technology: Bluetooth is a two-way wireless communication system allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, as well as wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth enabled portable music player using the JVC in-dash CD receiver. Bluetooth wireless technology operates on a 2.4GHZ frequency band within a range of approximately 10 meters (about 33 feet).

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or digital audio player must be paired with KD-HDR71BT before hands-free & wireless operation. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled devices with the JVC head unit. You can keep two phones connected at all times (only one can be used during a call).

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC head unit. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

External Microphone: The JVC KD-HDR71BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the level of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 12' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.485" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The front-panel controls of the KD-HDR71BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers (front or all). During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker, the head unit's display will flash (Ring Color), and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the KD-HDR71BT's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call. You can adjust the head unit's ring color from the unit's 29 preset colors or 30,000 custom colors.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-HDR71BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Speed Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-HDR71BT. If you phonebook contains a lot of contact numbers, you fast search (+/-10, 100, or 1000) through the phonebook by using the unit's control dial. You can also do an A-Z search to scroll the downloaded phonebook. Up to 5,000 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long.
      • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the JVC head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message.

Note: You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The JVC KD-HDR71BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KD-HDR71BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, and Fast Forward/Rewind. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Song and Album title. The KD-HDR71BT also supports audio streaming of music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) , but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

    Pandora App

Pandora Internet Radio Control: The JVC KD-HDR71BT CD receiver lets you playback and control the Pandora Internet Radio music service that is being streamed to your Apple iPhone, Android smartphone, or BlackBerry. While providing control over the Pandora music service, the KD-HDR71BT also displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list; you can sort the station list by date or alphabetically (A-Z). You can also skip song tracks within a station. In addition, you can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

Pandora App for iPhone: The JVC KD-HDR71BT lets you playback and control Pandora Internet Radio streamed to  your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/iPod connector cable (included with your iPhone). To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora App from the Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Pandora via Android or BlackBerry: The JVC KD-HDR71BT also lets you playback and control Pandora Internet Radio streamed from your Android or BlackBerry smartphone, via Bluetooth (no hard-wired connection required). Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must have the latest version of the Pandora App from the Android Market or the BlackBerry App World. Your Android or BlackBerry smartphone must also be Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP/SPP certified and will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. In addition, you will need an active Pandora music service account.

    USB/Aux Inputs

Dual USB Ports: The JVC KD-HDR71BT features a front-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (behind a sliding cover) and a rear-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (attached to a 45" pigtail) for connection of USB mass-storage class devices (such as a USB thumbdrive or digital audio player). The USB ports enable audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, & WAV audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices. Both of the USB terminals can be connected to USB devices at the same time. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (5V/1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Note: The rear-panel USB port comes with the KS-UBT1 Bluetooth adapter installed. This Bluetooth adapter must remain installed for Bluetooth functionality. It can be removed to allow connection of a second USB (MSC) device.

Drive Change Mode (for BlackBerry and Android): JVC's Drive Change Mode lets you connect your Android or BlackBerry smartphone (that uses an external memory card) directly to the head unit, via USB. Drive Change Mode will let you switch between your Android or BlackBerry smartphone's internal and external memory (such as microSD Card), so you can listen to music stored on either memory. You'll continue to be able control basic playback functions; such as folder/file search, play/pause, and skip next/previous; regardless of memory type.

Playable Files: The JVC KD-HDR71BT supports the following types of MP3/WMA/WAV files loaded onto a USB mass storage class device. The USB device must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The CD receiver can support up to a total of 20,000 files and 2,000 folders (999 filer per folder).

The unit's front-panel auxiliary input can be turned On or Off.

Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (469JVCRCA or 257KSU58, both sold separately) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary audio input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the proprietary J-port on the rear-chassis of the head unit.

    iPod/iPhone Control

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KD-HDR71BT's front-panel or rear-panel USB port can acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

    • External (App Mode): External Mode lets you enjoy audio content from your downloaded music Apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker streamed to your Apple iPhone, through the JVC KD-HDR71BT. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate and view your apps; the head unit will only display the clock and "EXT Mode".

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded application will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

iPod Display: The KD-HDR71BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, when in Head Unit and iPod mode (not in External mode), or listening to Pandora Internet Radio. The head unit can display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

Auto Drive Router App: Auto Drive Router is a free JVC app from iTunes for your iPhone (iOS 4.2 or later). This app can be controlled from the JVC KD-HDR71BT, when your iPhone is connected to the head unit's USB port. Auto Drive Router lets you record your traveled routes and store recorded data on your iPhone, using Google Maps. E-mails with map data can also be sent quickly and easily from your iPhone, letting others know where you are or where you want to meet.  You can start and stop when Auto Driver Router records your routes using the in-dash CD receiver's controls. You can also send an email template to your predetermined contacts directly from the receiver's controls. You can do all this while still listening to stored music or streamed music from your iPhone on the JVC KD-HDR71BT.

    • Drive Data: This function allows you to record routes and store them as data in your iPhone, enabling you to easily retrieve data just by selecting a route from the Saved Route List. When data is called up on your iPhone, the route being taken will be shown as a single line on the map in different colors to indicate how fast you were traveling. It is also possible to zoom in and out of maps on your iPhone, as well as see the speed and altitude of routes in a graph format on the iPhone's touchscreen. By connecting an iPhone with this app installed to the KD-735BT, you can record routes via the control knobs and buttons of the in-dash head unit.
    • Here I AM: When you select the "Here I Am" function on the Auto Drive Router app, a flag showing "Here I Am?" will appear on the on-screen Google Map of your iPhone to indicate your current location. And by using a default template, an e-mail will also be created instantaneously for delivery of the map to multiple recipients. The flag can also be placed in different locations on the on-screen map of the iPhone with the "Here I Am" function being used to e-mail changes in meeting spots. When your iPhone is connected to the JVC CD receiver, your email templates can be selected and sent directly from the head unit.
Note: The JVC head unit must be set to External/App mode. All visual navigation will be displayed on your connected iPhone (not the JVC head unit). You can only control a specific number of functions from the JVC head unit. Not compatible with iPad or other iPod models.

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

This type of gesture control is designed to operate the JVC head unit from your smartphone without having to look at your smartphone. Gesture control operations include Finger tap, Finger hold, Finger click, Finger swipe (right/left/up/down), and Finger curve (right/left/up/down).

Note: The free JVC Smart Remote App can be downloaded from the Android Market onto your compatible Android smartphone. requires that your Android smartphone have Android OS 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 installed; as well as Bluetooth SPP support.

Note: Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-HDR71BT can play MP3/WMA files (5-320 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-HDR71BT offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-HDR71BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-HDR71BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-HDR71BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-HDR71BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-HDR71BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Pro EQ: The KD-HDR71BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Source Link EQ: This feature allows you to store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, HD Radio, Aux, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

2.5V/6CH Preamp Output: The KD-HDR71BT is equipped with three pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front & rear preamp outputs offer balance/fade control and are designed to hookup to a full-range 4-channel amplifier. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading and designed to hookup to a mono-block subwoofer amplifier.

Subwoofer Controls: The JVC KD-HDR71BT offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Crossover: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Crossover for subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 55 Hz, 85 Hz, 120 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (0-8) from the CD receiver.

High-Pass Crossover: When activate the subwoofer preamp output's low pass crossover, you can also activate a high-pass filter (fixed at low-pass filter frequency) for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-HDR71BT CD receiver features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. A hard plastic face case is provide to store the detachable face.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-HDR71BT features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except the eject button (it remains red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

Brightness: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

We like the sound, the look, the quality of the Bluetooth connection.
    Pros:
Looks sharp. Sounds great. Though it takes a few seconds each time the Bluetooth initially connects, once it does, it sounds great and we have had no trouble keeping the connection.
    Cons:
It isn't as user friendly as I would like. We've had it a month or two and I still haven't gotten used to how to get to all the FM radio presets...or to display the clock when I want to see the time. I'm sure that I will figure these out, but it hasn't been obvious.

Great value for the price. This came with HD radio and bluetooth. Mic quality is also above average. My only two knock against it is 1. I had to remove the face trim to make it fit into my Corolla and 2. No diagram for the wiring on the back so you had to guess a bit .
    Pros:
HD radio. Bluetooth. Good quality Mic. Sound quality is excellent.
    Cons:
Face Trim had to be remove to fit. No wiring diagram so you had to guess a little when soldering this to the included wiring harness which did have a wiring diagram. Not a big deal but when you have to solder and heat wrap 12 wires together, you like to be 100% sure that you've connected everything to the right wires so you don't have to redo anything.

Installed well, good instuctions, quality seems good. Not very easy to use the basic functions: long button holds to get places, 3 or 4 buttons to get to balance/ fade/ treb/ bass controls. Long hold to turn off, no direct access to AM/ FM switch.
    Pros:
Nice display. Sound is very good. I love the HD radio and bluetooth for talking on the phone!
    Cons:
Too intricate for the basic functions. Guess I want it all!

I installed this in my wife's 1992 VW Corrado a few weeks ago and she's been extremely happy with it. It sounds great, and is easy to use.
    Pros:
BluTooth functions are easy to use and work well. Interface with iPhone and iPod work great.
    Cons:
Adding a Sirius tuner required a separate box, which was more money, and a bit more annoying.

Purchased this head unit to replace a stock GM one in my truck which didn't illuminate anymore. The install took about 45 minutes which was longer than it should have taken at 9 PM outside in the dark with 15 degree temps, lol. Just had to get it installed. After the install I was able to quickly dial in the audio, EQ, stations and colors. Once everything was complete I paired my Bluetooth. I have had this installed with four new speakers and a powered compact sub for over a week and couldn't be happier. JVC has really stepped up their game and I am able to really tune in the highs, mids, and lows. Very impressed by the quality and low price of this unit. Crutchfield truly makes retrofitting old car stereos fun by including detailed instructions, hardware, and super helpful tech support. Thanks
    Pros:
    Quality, looks, features, sound, price
    Cons:
Bluetooth has an intermittent delay sometimes if I am in and out of the vehicle. Not too bad though

Great Radio With A Right Price

With features that exceeds actually offered in more expensive double spaced units, this JVC have it ALL. Great sound with factory speakers and radio reception, CD Player, USB port and Bluetooth with smartphone apps compability. You can even set different colors in the dial section and the display section separately. Are you kidding me? Like most single dial control units, configuring and settings can take a while to get used to but you can always check out the well-documented user guide. This was installed in a 2004 Chevy Cavalier; included detailed instructions were really appreciated (you got to take out most of the dash to install this baby).

    Features, Radio Reception, Sound Quality.

This JVC lineup of auto stereos with Bluetooth in this price range is fantastic. I have replaced at least 3 vehicle head units with various JVC models in this price range with similar features, and they all look and sound great. The user selectable frequency EQ option is a big plus since you can really tune the output of these stereos to match the speakers it is driving. Selectable colors for the display and buttons customizes the look in your dashboard. Programmable output options for pre-amp out to subs is also a plus with the low & hi pass filters to further separate the signals going to subs and the full range speakers. Bluetooth works great for streaming audio and phone. This JVC stereo, like the others in this line up, is a great value that will not disappoint.
    Pros:
Programmable User EQ, Selectable output options, clean sound, removable faceplate, remote control
    Cons:
    None

Overall I'm pleased with the purchase.
    Pros:
Sound quality is excellent and plenty of power.
    Cons:
Big knob is too slippery and hard to control while driving especially with bumps. Changing radio stations other then the initial 6 pre sets is quite a chore. Navigation of all functions is generally not user friendly.

Nice head unit. Easy install with install kit. Great display. Could customize colors and intensity for both day and night. Bright white is very visible in day when lights off. Goes to orange to match dash lights when headlamps on. Very easy menus. Great Bluetooth. Nice to have pandora. Mic easily routed to A column for hands free calls. A winner. Dual USB allowed iPod in glovebox with front driving phone. Versatile.
    Pros:
Good sound. Great looks. Legibility in all lighting. Great Bluetooth. HD radio quality.
    Cons:
    None.

    MY-JVC KD-HDR71BT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio has very good bass and treble, but volume settings between the satellite and other functions vary greatly. Volume with the AM/FM tuner requires it to be set very low before switching to Sirius satellite function or it will be very loud and possibly blowout your speakers. I have to set the volume to no high then 2 before switching from FM to Sirius. This radio gives you good bass at a lower setting then other radios. It has two USB ports (one in front and one on back that can be extended out to the front with a small modification to mounting bracket. Bluetooth microphone is also included with this radio making it easy to use your cell phone hands-free. It also has built-in HD radio though you need to be within 25 miles of the broadcasting station to receive a good HD signal. Overall this is a very good radio with many features built into it.
    Pros:
Built-in HD radio receiver, two USB ports, Sirius Satellite ready, built-in Bluetooth, very good bass, middle and treble levels settings. Many different color display settings are available. Very good aftermarket head unit.
    Cons:
Sensitive volume settings switching between FM tuner and Sirius satellite function, it will be very loud on the Sirius setting if volume is above 2 on FM tuner.

This is a great stereo, I looked at a lot of stereos in this price range and this was the best buy. BT, HD, 6-channel
    Pros:
    BT, HD, 6-channel
    Cons:
The only thing about this stereo and every stereo with this many features is learning the setting controls. This was not as big of issue for me as it came out of the box sounding great

I wanted a cd stereo with HD radio and Blue Tooth (for my S3 android phone) plus usb and aux in, etc. JVC and Kenwood were the choices in this price range. I chose the JVC and I'm very happy I did. Unit pairs with my phone no problem. I can answer calls make calls, play song lists, etc. Once you figure out the controls it is not that difficult to operate. All in all it does what I need it to do. Haven't had it long enough to check out all the features but pleasantly surprised every time I discover some other neat one. Sound quality is very good even though I'm using factory speakers. The best part, you can look all over and get the unit a few bucks cheaper but you can't beat Crutchfield for making sure you have every thing you need for a successful installation and their customer service is second to none.
    Pros:
    works well with android phone
    Cons:

Great replacement for my '94 Explorer in dash

Written By daspazz, Conroe, Tx on Monday, June 24, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was replacing a double din unit just like it that died in my 2005 Focus that got totaled in February 2013. The unit has awesome sound and works great with my Rockford Fosgate 6x8 speakers which I did salvage from my Focus. I like the look and feel of the unit. Although after having the double DIN It does seem a bit cramped at times. The sound is very similar to how it sounded in my Focus, I just need to add a Sub so the low end sounds better. I had an MTX form fitting sub in my Focus and it will not work in the Explorer.

I do have one grip. The included install kit that allowed me to use the factory wiring harness was cheap and did cause me some woes after reinstalling the unit a few times. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. Cruthfield was very responsive and even sent me a replacement unit because I thought the power amp was blown initially. I was troubleshooting while waiting for the new unit to arrive and discovered that the header for the speaker to factory speaker wire adapter was having a shorting issue. I found that the front positive pins were shorted. Once I straightened that up and got the connectors to plug back into each other the unit returned to great sound with no "blown amp" symptoms. So just in case if your setup sounds like the amp is blown, check the cheap connectivity gear that you get for free!
    Pros:
Unit looks and sounds amazing as expected. Easy to install
    Cons:
Cheap connectivity accessories can be a pain in the ear(s)

    Excellent Head Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

unit installed easily, with no problems. Installing in my '01 Forrester S was a breeze compared to some of the other installs I've done. Provided wiring harness and instructions were easy to follow -- make sure you get have wire nuts or crimp connectors on hand (I ended up soldering 'cause it was a last-minute late-night project preceding a road trip and I didn't have enough crimp connectors in my parts stash.) Having the hands-free/bluetooth is fantastic, and the unit seems to handle cab noise extremely well. I'm absolutely pleased with the purchase.
    Pros:
Sounds great, even on my stock speakers. Decent Android support, strong bluetooth connectivity (Galaxy Note 2) HD Radio dash-mount mic works great, handles cab noise well. the custom color schemes are fun.
    Cons:
missing intuitive play/pause buttons (press volume button to mute) Traversing the menus can be a bit cumbersome, especially while driving, but I haven't found it to be a significant source of frustration. As others have noted, the interface can indeed be too bright at night, even at 00... However, this can be mitigated by choosing the right color scheme for the "night" scene. Some experimentation required.

I drive a 2004 Nissan SE-R Spec V, a few weeks ago, all the Left channels went offline (Common issue with factory amp.) I wanted a replacement that had HD radio, but NV recently passed laws requiring hands free phones while driving. The JVC KD-HDR71BT had both features that I was looking for. It execures both those perfectly, with the added bonuses of playing Digital Audio form USB in the front and looking great. It wan an exceptional vale too!
    Pros:
USB Front, BT, HD Radio, Great sound, Very simple installation.
    Cons:
Bluetooth microphone adhesive is weak (THat is REALLY the only con that I could find).

    Pros:

    Cons:
Button illumination too bright even when turn down to 00. Don't care for the part chrome face. The volume knob is hard to grip. Too many rear cables to stuff into the dash behind the radio.

Installation was simple and well explained except which wire to connect, or not connect, for the factory sub. When I called the tech support they walked me right through it and it worked perfectly. The instructions for the receiver aren't too clear, but you can figure out all of the features fairly quickly. Blue tooth and HD radio are working great. I use Pandora on Android and had to play around to figure out how to set it up and be able to control Pandora through the receiver. I didn't find good instructions for it. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the receiver and Crutchfield.

I'm pleased with this head unit. The lighting options are really cool and allow me to match the color for my picky customer, errr, spouse. The sound qua It's is superior to the stock Gm stereo. The front and rear USB ports are versatile. The rear USB port is on a roughly 2ft extension cable, that allowed me to run it to the glove box. The Bluetooth functionality is a tiny USB dongle that by default plugs in to this rear cable/port. You can alternatively move the BT dongle to the front. You could then use the USB cable to attach and charge the iPod or phone, etc.

Th hd radio seems to work really well, the sound quality of he radio is fantastic and in my experience is better than FM(duh) but MUCH better than sirius,xm. No compression artifacts as with Siriusxm.

The menu system is a little bit tricky to navigate, in this age of android and iOS touch screen user interfaces. It's not terrible, but in a ideal world this would be easier.

BT paired with my htc droid and I was making calls instantly.bt microphone comes on a long cable that allowed me to mount it nea r the center map light at top/center of windshield, as I read this was a good location.

    Great Stereo, Bad Menu's

Written By Capt Fiero, Surrey BC Canada on Thursday, September 20, 2012

I love the phone functions, the bluetooth works great, the display is more than bright enough in a Fiero. No glare for me, but the stereo is very low in the cabin a Fiero, so that might be why I don't have any issues. Everything about the unit is Great, EXECPT, something as simple as turning the Bass/Treble up down, or adjusting the EQ takes me a ton of button presses. The only "shortcut" to changine the EQ is have the remote handy as it has a one button adjustment on there for the presets. I am tempted to get an external sub control just so I can fine tune the bass level easily. I really enjoy the fact that the JVC App for the phone uses the phone as a 2nd display to show track information and radio station details as well. The phone features work the best out of any head unit I have tested. Being able to dial a number from my address book using the head unit is also handy. All in all this stereo gets an 8 out of 10. Only reason its not a 10, is the interface is such a pain.

    Phone and Bluetooth Controls

    Menu Interface

I really think this radio delivered on every level i needed it to. I saw some other individuals comment on how the menu setup is difficult to understand, but that's really not the case. Ok, sure, they could of moved the demo to the end of the list instead of having it the first item that comes up. Other than that, i love this thing! Pairs perfectly with my HTC rezound, all my friends in my car can pair to it and it just works so smoothly.

    Great sound, terrible user interface

Written By Anonymous, Galloway, NJ on Friday, August 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo because of its features - Bluetooth, dual USB ports, HD radio... I was initially happy because this stereo has beautiful sound quality, but I was dismayed when it became apparent that the user interface is terrible. Sometimes the simplest features are the most important. Nothing is perfect, but some small changes could have made this stereo more usable.

When bringing up the menu, the first category is "demo". It is useless, and they should have buried the option it in the menu instead of making it first. The equalizer is the only menu item I change every time I drive, but it is 6th in the menu. This makes it a chore to change the EQ settings.

After raising/lowering the volume, it lingers on the display for about 10 seconds. This is way too long, and 100% unchangeable.

The display face is shiny and reflects sunlight, which makes it impossible to see the text during the daytime, even with the display at maximum brightness. No, I will not be getting tinted windows so that I can keep using this stereo. They should have made the display face matte-coated instead of shiny.

The "forward/next" button is way too close to the "source" button and it is too easy to mistake the two without looking. This is very frustrating. Pressing the source button by mistake is very distracting, especially in heavy traffic.

The user interface is annoying. I would never recommend this stereo to anybody. I will contact support about returning it for a different model.
    Pros:
Great features! Sound quality is spectacular. Mid-range audio is crystal clear (I am using the OEM speakers which came with my Impala). Bluetooth works great and is also clear! USB flash memory MP3 function is fast and responsive. This is a solid unit. All of the advertised features work very well.
    Cons:
Do not underestimate this statement: the plastic on the front of the display is very shiny, and the LED is dim, so the display is unreadable during the day. Changing the settings is very tedious and cumbersome. The display defaults to showing the song being played. Need to press the "Disp" button a few times to what time it is.

Unit was a pain to install into a double din opening. The Nissan Versa install unit was junk. Had to use the factory mounting brackets. DON'T THROW THEM OUT if planning to buy .
    Pros:
Sounds & color display. A lot of extras for the money. Returned it for a double din unit with no problem from crutchfield. Super customer service, the best !!
    Cons:
I-POD constantly turned off. Poor, sometimes no HD radio reception. Had a problem using the controls, maybe because I went from double din to single din. A little smallish for me.

Decent unit but terrible JVC Support

Written By CM, Buffalo, NY on Monday, April 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit itself is nice. Menus take some getting used to. I have some big complaints about the bluetooth and USB though. It doesn't always pickup my iPod Touch 4G - particularly the Bluetooth. I have a 10 minute drive to work and it's easier just to get in the car with my iPod in my pocket and trust that the Bluetooth will connect. Sometimes the display just reads "STOP" and it never connects. I contacted JVC but their service was terrible. They claimed they'd never seen that message before and said it must be my iPod that has the problem. I got the same message once when I had it connected through USB. Seems the people that built this would know what the errors mean. Very disappointed with their feedback and won't likely buy a JVC again. The unit can also store contact information but it doesn't work for the iPhone. I imagine that's an actual iPhone problem but when I try to pull the contacts over Bluetooth, the BT on the unit shuts off and both my devices disconnect. JVC couldn't offer any solution to that either.
    Pros:
Versatile and plenty of options for the price. Sounds great through stock speakers.
    Cons:
Bluetooth connectivity with iPod Touch. JVC offered little to no support.

    Excellent Upgrade

An excellent upgrade over my Subaru Foresters "premium" stock head. Power is great and sound quality noticeably improved. Do not miss the factory sub, which this unit does not drive. Bluetooth integration is excellent, with phone integration better than my wife's new TSX. HD radio well worth the small additional cost, as it makes listening enjoyable again. Crutchfield support and installation instructions superlative. I really couldn't be happier.
    Pros:
    Sound, bluetooth, HD radio
    Cons:
not all controls immediately intuitive, but good directions and easy to learn with small effort.

Good unit, some USB bugs though

Written By TJ, WA on Sunday, March 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to upgrade/replace a JVC KD-HDR10, in order to gain Bluetooth and USB functionality.

Sound is similar to the previous unit - good. It's driving OEM speakers in the Accord, and the EQ helps even those out a bit. In our other car my HDR10 is driving Focals, which it sounds great with, I expect this unit would also.

HD radio functionality is solid, as with the previous unit.

Bluetooth functionality, both phone and audio streaming, works pretty well, no issues there. Using it with a Samsung Focus (WP7.5).

The USB input though has some serious problems, which I will be contacting crutchfield/JVC about. If you are playing from a USB memory card/drive, and you turn the car/unit off, it *always* fails when you turn it back on with "read failure". You have to remove the stick, turn the unit off, turn it on again and re-insert the stick - then it'll read ok and resume. Serious and unacceptable bug which I hope JVC will address with a firmware update, otherwise it might be going back.
    Pros:
Good sound, flexible EQ HD radio and Bluetooth work great Good build quality, and display color customization Good value for HD radio, BT, USB inputs, etc.
    Cons:
Serious bugs with USB input and memory cards/sticks (see review above) Source selection is a bit of a pain due to the lack of a separate "band" button - so AM is in the list as well, and also AUX even when nothing is connected to the jack.

I installed this to replace the factory unit. I wanted HD radio and more power. This unit delivered both. The old unit wasn't able to deliver a lot of volume on noisy roads (the Hyundai Accent isn't a quiet vehicle) but this unit pumps out the volume with no trouble. It makes the factory speakers sound better. With a lot of adjustments in the EQ, you can set this up however you'd like. The adjustable color schemes are nice, but not a big deal for me.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Great sound. Excellent volume. Wonderful EQ. This is completely customizable for sound and visual display.
    Cons:
    none so far
