This an absolutely excellent Cd receiver. The choice of display light patterns is very
cool. It takes some getting used to the volume knob. Tapping it, pressing it and turning
it all do different functions. I would ideally rather have the volume knob be just that only.
When you go to crank up a tune and accidentally mute it, it sucks.

overall a good product, but if you have BOSE it doesnt put out nearly enough power to

alot that you can make adjustments to, and plenty of colors to pick from, the usb port is a

Fantastic Head Unit. Im familiar with a few different brands and JVC is definately my
favorite. The > buttons are bit small, but they are still plenty usable. I just
thought they could have made them a bit bigger and made the buttons you dont use
often(menu, color, back) smaller. All in all I highly recommend this product and rest of
the JVC line of head units.

This has great sound customization, with bass, mid, & treble--level and
frequency for all three, and Q factor for bass & mid. Plus, the color
customization comes down to RGB values for the display, with separate day and
night settings. Incredible options for the price.

    Good sound, lousy tuner

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound but very hard to figure out. Sometimes you turn the knob; sometimes you
click it. No logical continuity to setting the features. The tuner sensitivity specs are VERY
exaggerated. My factory radio was much better and excellent reception was the main
feature I was looking for in a new receiver so I am very disappointed. If you need a good
    tuner, avoid this unit!
I do like that I can change the display colors and the USB port is a great option.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very impressed with this JVC receiver. I would recommend it to anyone out there. I wanted something to play my Ipod in my vehicle and the stock stereo did not have a aux port. I decided to buy this deck because of the USB hub. I have never had a stereo that controlled the Ipod before. It is very nice. It is easy to use and you can hide your Ipod. The sound quality with the Ipod is excellent and this deck makes my stock speakers sound much better. The only thing that I was upset about was the wiring harness. I informed Crutchfield that I had a 2010 Ford Crown Vic. They sent me a harnness for a 98-03 Crown Vic. I did not want to wait another week to put my stereo in so I bought the correct Harness locally. I thought that was a little annoying but everything else went great. I have never hooked up a wiring harness before. I was easy and the install was easy. Reading the directions took 45 minutes and the install took 20 minutes.

I like everything about this unit. The functionality, the ergonomics, the color choices, the readout details. I especially like the big multi-function knob; it's much easier to use than the Pioneer unit I put in my own car. This is for my wife's car; she only listens to the public broadcasting system radio station so lack of preset buttons is not an issue.

Good unit if you don't have iphone 3Gs with ios4

Written By wpfeiffe, Brandon, FL on Friday, October 01, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this unit for radio/cd/remote/ and iphone/ipod functionality. HOWEVER, the aux input from my iphone 3Gs with ios 4.1 upgrade is extremely weak. In order to achieve a reasonable volume with AUX in, you have to turn the iphone up to a point where the analog signal out starts to saturate. The USB playback has its own set of issues: digital blips/artifacts or skips occur every 5-10 seconds. Realize this is likely only occurring with the 3gs / ios 4.x combination on playback. After talking to tech support, they let me know that almost ALL other USB music players work fine with this unit.

I bought this primarily for the iphone playback, and if the sound was reasonable, I would love it. Its not, so I don't. It should be noted that Crutchfield does publish a compatibility matrix and did indicate that ios upgrades COULD cause an issue. I wrote this review to warn off anyone hoping their 3Gs ios 4.1 might work well with this unit; it doesn't.

    Awesome sound. Awkward controls.

Written By KevBo, Pineville, LA on Monday, September 27, 2010

I purchased this unit after the OEM radio went out in my '08 Kia Rondo. As always, the
Crutchfield advisor/support was terrific, and I bought the unit over the phone at the
recommendation of the advisor. It took longer to remove the factory radio (because of a
stripped screw) than it did to install the JVC unit. The sound is incredible and brings
out the best in the previously installed Blaupunkt GTc542 5-1/4" Component speakers
mounted in the front doors, and the Kenwood KFC-1662S 6-1/2" or 6-3/4" 3-way
Speakers mounted in rear doors, both ordered from Crutchfield. The controls on the JVC
unit tend to be a bit awkward at first. But with time, it becomes easier to use and
understand. Love the ability to change the display lighting.

    Just Very Cool (JVC)

Written By JuanJr, Weslaco, TX on Saturday, September 25, 2010

Recently sold my car and replaced it with a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The stock CD player didn't have an aux input like my Impala (Unit 22) had. I also have an amp and sub with enclosure that I had previously purchased from Crutchfield that I wanted to install. So that's when I decided I needed a receiver. After looking around several websites I kept coming back to Crutchfield especially since they include everything you need to get the receiver installed. After checking out my options the JVC KD-R610 stood out from crowd. The customizable color display, aux input, and USB drive port was perfect. The sound is amazing and can be customized to your ears with the very detailed advanced EQ. Installation time took me about 2 hours including driving to auto parts store to get some butt connectors. The mastersheets included were perfect and very detailed. Without them I would not know where to start.

Go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good unit for the price range. Received this unit over the weekend which included free installation kit. Purchased the extra Posi-products wire conntectors which made connecting the wire harness a breeze. This is my first run installing a radio in over 20 years and the entire install took a little over a hour. Most of the time spent on the wires.

This is a great radio if you plan to use an IPOD or USB connection. Easily switch between albums, artists, songs, etc. Plus it charges the IPOD.

The music qaulity is clean and crisp with improved sound over the stock stereo. The pre- set equalizer is nice but I could not find one to match my system. Adjusting the equalizer is easy and is now set to a custom setting.

User manual could use a lot of improvement, I figured out their method of madness after a few minutes.

Switching radio stations is a pain, but most pre-set buttons on other radios are small and difficult use. Not sure why after market radios are so much smaller.

Hard to believe a radio at this price could be better than stock radio but its true. Plan to install component speakers in the future and dynamat or similar. No use upgrading the your system is your doors and dash rattle from the bass.

    One happy JVC owner

5 big bright stars on this head unit.
I needed a new stereo for my Miata, and the JVC610 had everything I wanted, and a really good price.
I put this in my Miata, and have to say the sound is great, much, much, much better than the unit I replaced
I really enjoy the ipod controls for my iphone, 3G, and 4.0, they work very well, and I use the ipod part more than anything else.
I highly recommend this model, and I do recommend you read the instructions, and take time to learn the ins, and outs of all the various functions. This head unit offers a lot of features to fine tune the sound.
I would recommend buying an amp if you drive a convertible, at high speeds, with the top down a lot, and like the music extra loud, to avoid some bass distorition, but that is normal for any head unit used in a convertible without an amp.
At normal, legal speeds, the sound at reasonable levels is great, in a convertible.
If this unit was in my truck, or sedan, the sound would be perfect And as usual, you can't beat Crutchfield awesome service, and the fact that they include an installation kit, which makes the install easier. Why can't all businesses be this good to deal with.
I do not bother with any other stores when I need audio equipment.

Great for USB flash drive freaks

Written By Robert, Knoxville, TN on Thursday, August 12, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the JVC KD-R610 when I read someone's description saying this receiver "remembers" your last song when using USB flash memory sticks. That's all I needed to hear since the USB was going to be the main source I would be using (I have several hundred songs on a flash memory). So I purchased and installed this receiver. I found out that it not only remembers the last song, it resumes at the last note you were on in the last song. I also added a subwoofer to the system. This made it important to adjust the low frequencies so the woofer was not boomy and annoying. The KD-R610 lets you do this by adjusting the level at 60 Hz, 80 Hz, 100 Hz, and 120 Hz. (You can also do this for the mid-range and High-range frequencies.) And, of course, it has pre-determined equalization called things like flat, dynamic, bass, vocals, etc. But when you set the ranges to your liking, it is saved under the equalization called "user." The only complaint I have is that the receiver and set up does not strike me as especially user-friendly or intuitive - but you can get used to it if you're a computer programmer (just kidding). It's a very good receiver!

    Great Receiver!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great upgrade from my stock receiver. I wanted something that could easily be used with my iPhone, and this does exactly that.My only complaint is the control set up. Instead of just hitting one button to get to the menu (the menu button on the unit only works when accessories are plugged in to get you to their menu) you need to hit color, then back, then you get to your main menu to fine tune the receiver. From there it does let you change the colors, bass, treble, and all that good stuff to however you like it. I prefer to change my music on the phone itself, so once I figured out the convoluted controls, it was easy to set up. Install was a breeze only taking a little over an hour in my 2004 Honda Civic. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking at it. Even with my stock speakers the souns is far superior than the stock receiver.

Good sound, Sweet colors, Complicated interface

Written By andrew, Fort Riley, Kansas on Saturday, June 26, 2010

This is a great head unit. The USB interface wont work with my older U2 edition iPOD, but oh well there's still the aux in. I like how you can adjust the colors on the face to any technicolor blur you desire.

My only gripe with this model is unfortunately a large one. I don't fancy myself a rocket scientist but I don't think I'm an idiot either. The interface on this model is as clunky and complicated as it can be without requiring a degree to use it. Its possible its just me because my ten year old son can navigate the various menus without a problem. Really wouldn't be so bad if there was the 1 through 5 buttons along the bottom. You know, all the preset radio stations. I like the whole "ONE KNOB TO RULE THEM ALL" thinking going on right now but give some of us dimmer folks a break.

Great unit & easy to use. Thanks to Crutchfield's install kit and instructions, the system was operational in minutes and the mounting bezel give the unit a factory appearance. As for the initial setup, it couldn't be easier.

Although I'm still using the factory speakers, the unit sounds fantastic. I did need to balance out the signal strength between the front & rear speakers, but now the sound is rich and full throughout the vehicle. The built-in iPod control feature is outstanding. Now I can cancel my Sirius subscription.

    My wife is so jealous.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a simple, straightforward stereo with front USB and aux to replace the factory tape/CD player in my 2002 Subaru Outback. This JVC had everything I was looking for, and was expandable for the future, all for a great price. Wiring harness and Mastersheet were extremely valuable. Stereo works great and sounds great. Have tried it with BlackBerry Tour and thumbdrive so far, no issues at all - will be getting iPod classic later, not expecting any issues. Easy to navigate, and all controls and functions are well thought out and work smoothly. Reading from USB is very fast, and it picks up where you left off even if you disconnect then reconnect the device and/or turn the car off. Overall, this was a great buy and my experience with Crutchfield was exceptional.

    can't see it

Written By Anonymous, nevada on Tuesday, June 01, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is good, the features are good, but the display is bad. The little LEDs are set for viewing at a downward angle. If your installation tilts the unit upward a bit, it gets hard to see. In sunlight, it's completely invisible. I put this in a Honda Fit. My head is above the unit, but the dash is slanted so the unit's front plate, of course, matches the slope of the dash. The original factory unit had big LCD characters, easy to see in any light. I miss that.

Also, the owners manual is terrible. Hard to understand and not all procedures are explained properly. But you can call the JVC help line and have them tell you how to operate it.

But I do like having USB iPod connection. That's why I put this in, and it works well. Just wish I could see the dang thing.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this deck into my 06 nissan frontier and I highly recommend it. My requirements were:

    iPod integration
    AUX In
    MP3/WMA playback

All of these requirements existed in this head unit and for this price, you can't go wrong. The install guides, free metra kit, and wiring harness made the install very easy. The backlight colors span the entire color spectrum and you can easily match your existing dash colors.

The sound is good. I'm not a huge audio buff, but I did appreciate the nice, crisp sound that this deck played through my stock speakers. I think if I were to upgrade again, the speakers would be next.

One thing that I can't figure out (too lazy to read the manual) is how to control the iPod from the iPod/iPhone itself versus just through the deck.

What I like about the unit it's the color changer & the USB port in front. I like to make a comment in regards to the instructions ref. to the type of vehicle it's mounted in. During Installation: The 2000 Toyota SR5 reguires that the four wire front panel harness should stay connected to supply power to the reciever, apparently the sys is in series. Instead of buying speakers I am going to buy another one of these decks to put in 'the womans' vehicle. The deck makes music from hip-hop to symphonic sound excellent. The options for 'source music' is simple to navigate. Installation took less than an hour. Ease of setup is also good and following the information in the unit manual is straight forward.

Great Unit, very stylish looking and the color choice and scheme is pretty
extensive and you can tailor it to any taste and to match any interior. The USB
and aux inputs right on the face are great and my iphone syncs perfectly with
this unit. It's great because you can search right through the stereo by artist,
album etc. Many sound options but if there is one thing I would change it is
that even with all of these sound options I wish there was a more in depth
option to allow the user to individually tweak each and every setting based on
how the user wants them and not just having the 3 or 4 pre-programmed settings
That issue is minor however, and the unit sounds crystal clear. HD radio and
bluetooth ready. Tons of options for such a low priced stereo. I would
    definitely recommend this stereo.

Well where do i start....This head unit looks great in my 01 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
My dash lights are an odd orange color so i was worried that most receivers
wouldn't match the color.. but with this unit i found an exact match! The sound
quality is great when you adjust the built in E.Q....even with my stock speakers
and no woofers. I do plan on buying an amp + woofers to get the full use of this
receiver . As far as hooking up an iPod, i have the iTouch and it works
outstanding with this unit. I plugged the ipod in via USB and you can scroll
through your artist songs genres and more right from the receiver!! Another neat
option is you can set custom names to all your station presets. I am very please
with this purchase and I consider it a steal for the price and the free tools,
instructions and dash kit crutch field throws in.

Note: I was very skeptical about changing the stock head unit out of my eclipse
because of the display above the receiver not working.....Well your not going to
see your channels your on but you can still run the clock....so your not just
going to have a blank space above the receiver and it looks great.

Overall: Great sleek look/Great Sound/Great Customization options/Great price!

    Great Bang for your buck

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit last week to replace the stock radio in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, which is my daily driver during nasty weather.

I was looking to spend less than $150 and have had good luck with JVC in the past, so I decided to purchase this head unit.

I installed the head unit over the weekend, and I must say that it has no disappointed so far. Integrated iPod controls allow you to control your iPod (i am using a Touch) through the unit, or by pressing a button you can control the iPod through it's interface if you prefer. iPod will also charge while connected to the head unit if using the USB cable that came with your iPod.

In addition, there are several other features such as custom and preset EQ settings, over 30 preset colors to choose from on the display, or custom tune the color to your needs. The unit also allows you to add on modules as desired for addtional performance such as Bluetooth adapter and satellite radio.

So far, I am very happy with the sound, quality, and features included for the price. The only MINOR complaint that I have (and it is MINOR), is that the included remote is small. Although I don't use it much, I have bigger hands and found it akward to use. However this should in no way stop someone from buying this head unit if they are considering it.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a detachable face to deter theft. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Variable Color LCD and Key Illumination: The JVC KD-R610 features 29 color presets for the LCD display and button illumination. Additionally, there is a user preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except Eject, EQ, and display; those remain red. You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination or use a separate color for each one.  You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD display and button illumination.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12 volts is applied to the illumination lead).

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R610 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R610 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R610 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R610 are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Pro EQ: The KD-R610 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal, Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the headunit's 3 band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Tone JVC Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R610 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Source Volume: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Switchable Preamp Outputs: The KD-R610 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear). You can set the rear preamp outputs for connecting rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading, and you can set the cutoff frequency of the low pass filter at 72Hz, 111Hz, or 157Hz. The subwoofer level can be set between 0 and 8.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash headunit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-R610 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

Title Assignment: You can also assign names (up to eight characters) for 30 AM/FM station frequencies.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

US/European Tuning: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner between US standard and European tuning spacing.

HD Radio: The KD-R610 supports HD Radio when the optional JVC HD Radio tuner box (105KTHD300, sold separately) is connected to the receiver's CD changer port on the rear of the unit. HD Radio Technology can deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo, while FM digital will have CD-like quality with static free and clear reception. In addition, AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. Many HD Radio stations also offer more than one channel of programming. This service is called multicasting. When this optional HD Radio tuner box is connected to the KD-R610, you will still be able to receive conventional analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: Right now there are about 2,000 radio stations broadcasting using digital HD Radio technology in the U.S. To find HD Radio stations in your area, visit the HD Radio website (HDRadio.com).

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver to this receiver:

    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio connect the optional CNP2000UCA XM Direct2 tuner and the JVC CNP-JVC1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMJVC2, sold separately).
    • SIRIUS: The JVC KD-R610 is compatible with the SiriusConnect Universal Tuner and Plug & Play Dock.
      • SiriusConnect Tuner: Connect the optional SC-C1 SiriusConnect vehicle tuner (item number 607SCC1) and the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100) - package # 700SIRJVC1, sold separately.
      • SiriusConnect Dock: Select dock-and-play and portable SIRIUS radios can be controlled using the JVC KS-SRA100 SIRIUS adapter (item number 105KSRA100, sold separately) and the SC-VDOC1 dock (item number 607SCVDOC1, sold separately).
    • Auxiliary Input: A portable XM or Sirius satellite radio receiver can be connected to the head unit via the front panel auxiliary input or a JVC auxiliary input adapter, such as the KS-U57 or KS-U58 (sold separately).

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-R610 can play MP3 (32-320 kbps)/WMA files (32-320 kbps) that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo or Windows long file. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 255 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3 or WMA files.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust; playback starts automatically.

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    Aux/USB/iPod Connection

USB Port: The JVC KD-R610 features a front panel USB 2.0 type-A port behind a sliding cover for connection of a USB mass-storage class device (FAT 12/16/32). The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3/WMA (32-320 kbps) audio files stored on a portable USB mass-storage class device. The KD-R610 can recognize up to 255 folders (255 files per folder) and 5,000 total files. The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod Direct: The JVC KD-R610's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod. An additional iPod cable is available (472USBCBLE, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Menu options allow iPod control from the headunit or from the iPod itself. From the headunit's front-panel controls you can search your iPod/iPhone's music by Category (Playlist/Artist/Album/Song/Genre/Composer). If the selected category contains a high number of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10, 100, 1000) through the music tracks in that particular category by simply turning the headunit's control dial. The KD-R610 also supports Repeat and Random playback functions of your iPod/iPhone. Regardless of control mode, the KD-R610 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file text. The iPod/iPhone is also charged whenever it is connected with the head unit turned on. The JVC KD-R610 is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model features (as of Jan. 2010):
