Our take on the JVC KD-R820BT

by Zak Billmeier
JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Tired of fumbling around with your phone in the car? JVC's KD-R820BT CD receiver includes a small USB Bluetooth® adapter that'll let you talk hands-free while you're on the road. And this receiver features two USB inputs, so you can still keep one free for connecting your iPod® or playing music from a thumb drive.

Talking hands-free when you drive lets you keep both hands on the wheel, all the more important as more and more localities enact hands-free laws. But Bluetooth isn't all about making and receiving calls. You can also stream music to the KD-R820BT if your phone or another device supports it.

Bring PANDORA® Internet radio on the road
PANDORA® lovers, you can play all your stations through this JVC. Just download a free app for your iPhone®, connect it to one of the USB inputs, and enjoy. Plus you can play audio from other apps right through the stereo, giving you tons of listening options on your next trip.

Customize your look
With JVC's Separated Variable-Color display, you can pick from over 30,000 possible colors to match the KD-R820BT to your vehicle's dash lighting. You can also assign separate colors to the left and right sides of the control panel for a style that's all your own. If that seems like too many choices, you can also tell the stereo to continually cycle through all the colors for a truly unique look.

Wonderful sound
JVC uses a Burr-Brown 24-bit digital-to-analog converter in this receiver. That sounds impressive, but what does it really mean to you? A digital-to-analog converter takes the digital information stored on your CDs and in your music files, and turns it back into music. Burr-Brown converters are universally recognized for their smooth, superior sound, and you'll usually find them only in expensive home CD players and top-of-the-line car stereos. You'll really be knocked out by this receiver's sound quality, especially if you're building a full audio system in your vehicle.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The JVC KD-R820BT features a detachable face to deter theft. A hard-plastic face-case is provided. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Variable Color LCD & Key Illumination: The JVC KD-R820BT features 29 color presets for the LCD and button illumination. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. The chosen color preset or custom color can be applied to the display panel and the backlighting for all the buttons except the Display, Brightness, & Eject buttons (they remain red). You can choose to use the same color for the LCD display and button illumination, or use a separate color for each one. You can also select a different color for daytime and nighttime in regards to the unit's LCD and button illumination.

LCD Type: You can select between a Negative or Positive pattern for the display. You can also set the unit to automatically switch to a Positive LCD pattern during the day and a negative LCD pattern during the night.

Brightness/Contrast: The unit offers an adjustable display and button illumination brightness level (0-31) for day and nighttime driving. You can also adjust the display contrast (0-8) to make the display clearer and more legible.

Display/Button Illumination Dimmer: The display/button illumination dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), On (display/button illumination is always dimmed), or Auto (display dims when 12-volts is applied to the orange/white illumination lead).

Clock Display: The JVC CD receiver features a 12/24-hour clock display. You can switch between the head unit's source information and clock display when the unit is powered on. When you power the unit off, you can press the "display" button to temporarily view the clock display.

    Audio Section

    Burr-Brown 24-bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-R820BT utilizes a premium TI/Burr-Brown 24-bit digital-to-analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The KD-R820BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the KD-R820BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the KD-R820BT are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 20 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)

Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-R820BT with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/6CH Preamp Output: The KD-R820BT is equipped with three pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The front and rear preamp outputs allow fader control, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Subwoofer Level: You can adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between 0 and 8.

Built-in Crossovers: The JVC KD-R820BT features a built-in high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear speakers and a low-pass filter for the unit's subwoofer output.

    • High-Pass Filter: You can activate a variable high-pass filter for the unit's front & rear channels (speaker- or preamp-level), so low frequency signals are cut off from your system's front & rear speakers. You can set the cutoff frequency of the high-pass filter at 62Hz, 95Hz, or 135Hz.
    • Low-Pass Filter: You can set the cutoff frequency of the subwoofer output's low-pass filter to 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz.

Pro EQ: The KD-R820BT is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Flat, Natural, Dynamic, Vocal Boost, Bass Boost, User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Tone Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 50, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, 2.0
    Treble 5, 10, 15 khz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, 2.0

Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can turn this feature on or off.

Key-Touch Tone: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The JVC KD-R820BT features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: You can store a total of 18 FM stations presets and 6 AM station presets. The radio allows you to set your AM/FM stations manually or automatically.

Note: This unit does not offer front-panel preset buttons. You will need to access your saved presets through the receiver's menu.

Title Assignment: You can assign titles (up to 8 characters) for up to 30 AM/FM stations.

IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.

Mono: If an analog FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to Mono operation.

Note: A subscription is also required to receive satellite radio programming from SIRIUS or XM.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

Note: The unit features a fold-down face, so the face must be folded-down manually before inserting or ejecting a disc.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-R820BT can play MP3 (5-320 kbps) and WMA (5-320 kbps) audio files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, or Romeo. The head unit can recognize a total of 20,000 files and 2,000 folders (999 files per folder). The unit also supports IDTag3 (version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, 2.3 or 2.4) for album and artist information from MP3/WMA files (up to 128 characters).

Track/Folder List: The Track/Folder List displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD, so you can easily access your music. The Track/Folder List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc. If the MP3/WMA disc contains a lot of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10, 100, 1000) through the disc by turning the unit's control dial quickly.

A-Z Search: For MP3/WMA discs, you can also use the A-Z search function to scroll through the track/folder list menu.

Random/Repeat Modes: The JVC KD-R820BT offers the following Repeat and Random playback modes for your audio CDs.

    • Repeat: Track Repeat (plays the current track repeatedly), Folder Repeat (plays all tracks of the current folder repeatedly), Off (cancels repeat function)
    • Random: Folder Random (plays all tracks of the current folder, then the tracks of the next folder in random), All Random (plays all tracks of the current disc at random), Off (cancels random function)

Disc Resume: If you change the source, playback also stops (without ejecting the disc). Next time you select CD for the playback source, the disc will start from where it has been stopped previously.

Off Eject: A CD disc can be ejected with the power off. The unit must be powered on to insert a disc.

Disc Protection: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust. The source will change to CD, and the disc will begin playback, even if you have another source selected at the time.

Mounting: For proper disc playback you must install the unit within 30-degrees of horizontal.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

Dual USB Ports: The JVC KD-R820BT features a front-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (behind a sliding cover) and a rear-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (attached to a 45" pigtail) for connection of USB mass-storage class devices. The USB ports enable audio playback and control of MP3 (32-320 kbps), WMA (5-320 kbps), and WAV (705-1411 kbps) audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices formatted in FAT 12/16/32. The unit offers the same playback functions for its USB connections as its disc player.

Note: Both of the USB terminals can be connected to USB devices at the same time. You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The JVC KD-R820BT's front-panel or rear-panel USB port can also act as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the USB/iPod cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. An additional iPod cable is available (469USBPOD, sold separately) so you can leave one at home and one in the car. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the JVC head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter (bypassing the iPod/iPhone's DAC), allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 102dB. The JVC KD-R820BT supports audio playback of music files, podcasts, and apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

    • Music Browsing: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search your iPod/iPhone's music by Category (Playlist/Artist/Album/Song/Genre/Composer). If the selected category contains a high number of tracks, you can fast search (+/-10, 100, 1000) through the music tracks in that particular category by simply turning the head unit's control dial. You can also use the A-Z search function to search your music alphabetically.
    • Repeat & Random: The KD-R820BT also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone.

Note: You can listen to apps stored on your iPhone through the JVC head unit when controlling the iPhone via its touchscreen (cannot access apps via head unit control mode).

iPod/iPhone Display: The KD-R820BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information, regardless of control mode. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the JVC KD-R820BT using your connected Apple iPhone, via the USB/iPod connector cable (included with your iPhone). The JVC KD-R820BT provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list, and skip song tracks within a station. You can also give songs a thumbs up/down and bookmark songs/artists. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone.

The external microphone features an attached 9.75' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.545" (diameter) x 1.105" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker, the head unit's display will flash (Ring Color), and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the KD-R820BT's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call. You adjust the head unit's ring color from the unit's 29 preset colors or 30,000 custom colors.

Lots of design problems, but still basically good.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The most important things about this head unit (sound quality, feature set) are pretty darn good. I just wish the details were executed with more thought. Since Crutchfield
    Pros:
    - Works with my VW Monsoon amplifier. - Sounds much better than my stock head unit. - Pretty good feature set. - Good faceplate attachment mechanism. - Doesn't have a huge mess of unnecessary cables permanently attached to the back.
    Cons:
    - no aac/m4a - ignores ipod exclude-from-shuffle flag - sometimes gets stuck reading ipod - no built-in bluetooth (dongle uses usb port) - no built-in mic - external mic is awful - glossy, curved screen cover obscures display in daytime - illumination line is not isolated; allows headlight buzz/whine - some text (e.g. eq mode) is tool small to read - must cycle sequentially between eq modes - title scrolling wastes time with trailing space

    Poor Android integration

Written By Carl, Santa Barbara, CA on Sunday, February 19, 2012

I've only had this unit for 24 hrs. The volume button has already fallen off(admittedly I was on a bumpy road) and disappeared. It won't play songs of my Android Samsung Galaxy S phone. It won't play the audio from movies playing on my iPad. The bluetooth functionality only works intermittently even with my iPhone 4s. Can I even search for songs on this POS or do I havre to scroll for them? My phonebook downloaded once, but after removing the phone and trying to download it again it just hangs.

Positives: I like that I can change the colors to match my car interior. The few times I could get the bluetooth to work, the sound quality was good.
    Pros:
led color selection, handsfree sound quality
    Cons:
poor mechanical design, poor bluetooth integration, usb doesn't work with my android,

I bought this primarily so I could stream music from my bluetooth phone and make calls. For those purposes it works wonderfully well. The controls are a bit close together but I guess that is understandable given the form factor.
    Pros:
Bluetooth, ability to play MP3's from thumdrive, great call quality

    Small controls, limited bass

    You've got Bluetooth!

Written By Mike B, Los Angeles, CA on Monday, January 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you want Bluetooth with iPhone, this works great. I put the small Bluetooth USB device in the front USB port and used the rear cable to connect iPhone or other USB devices. Setup was easy, and the Bluetooth controls the iPhone with Pandora or your own music library. I haven't even tried the direct connection, as the Bluetooth worked so seamlessly. The sound quality made the stock speakers sound much better than with the original radio, reducing the urgency of installing the speakers I bought with the head unit.
    Pros:
Lots of value in a compact unit. Color selection makes it easy to match the unit to your car's interior lighting.
    Cons:
Lack of 1 button presets for radio, requires menu access to list.

Great value for the quality of product. I still use my stock speakers plus a kenwood low profile powered sub in my ext cab truck produces awesome sound. It doesn't blow the windows out, but great sound at all volumes! I listen to jazz, rap, rock, and country and they all sound great.
    Pros:
Great receiver. It does everything I need. Teh bluetooth quality is really good and with the dual usb's and front AUX I have options. Ipod in Rear usb and bluetooth in Front.

    Great head unit, 1 issue

Written By z4ce, St. Louis, MO on Friday, November 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow -- what an upgrade from 99 mustang premium sound. I was absolutely amazed at how much better it sounded over the stock system (as was my wife). Even with the stock speakers it sounds actually very decent. With the old amp and HU the speakers always sounded tinny even with the bass adjusted. Now the music actually has some definition and some bass you can feel. Just changing the HU had way more effect than I expected.

At first the A2DP and phone integration worked great. Then about a week later it stopped working. If there was a "Customer Service" rating, JVC would get a zero. I called asking for help with the bluetooth adapter crashing and they could only offer to send my unit to New York for repair.

I did some debugging on my own and realized my Evo 3D had pulled down some 500 email only contacts from my gmail account. When the head unit would connect using bluetooth PBAP this number of contacts would apparently crash the unit. I removed the gmail/phone sync and now it worked fine. So if your having bluetooth problems with an android phone on this unit clear your contacts and disable Google Contact Sync. JVC, if your reading this review -- please fix this.

One other thing -- if you have a ford/mazda with premium sound get the BYPASS harness. Do NOT get the factory amp harness. I was recommended by Crutchfield to get the factory amp harness, but after reading up on some forums I found people who were using the factory amp were very disappointed.
    Pros:
Great sound quality, lots of connectors, A2DP, AVRC, phone integration, IPOD integration, bypass wiring harness
    Cons:
    Bluetooth PBAP support

    poor ipod control

Written By rt, arizona on Thursday, October 27, 2011

I got this receiver based on reviews. It had a lot of options that would cost double with other brands. Built in bluetooth, 24bit burr-brown, multi color display, ipod control, comptible with both Xm and Sirus radio, to list a few. But after connected I found its flaws. The remote is somewhat of a joke, with minimal unit control. Consider it a basic control remote. Volumn, source, forward and back. The unit or remote control is somewhat unfriendly. For example, presets. There is no preset buttons. Have to scroll down a preset list, after selecting the list first. Then cam the ipod. This is the main reason I got the unit, for ipod control unit. The first time I connected, it worked. The next 5 times it would not sync with the ipod. would not work. Finally started to work again. After turning the vehicle off, left ipod connected, turned vehicle back on and ipod sync is gone again. About 60% of tht time the unit would not connect to the ipod. Tried different cables, tried using the rear USB, did not make a difference. I have a ipod classic 6g. It should be compatible. But seldom works. I am returning mine and tring something better. But to find another unit with as many options with a good price will be dificult.
    Pros:
Lot of options for the price.
    Cons:
remote is a joke. ipod sync seldom works.

Everything works as stated in product descriptions. Bluetooth is fantastic. Easy to operate except it has no preset buttons but its not a big deal to use UP/DOWN buttons to select preset stations. Malty line display is very handy when calling from phone book and color selection is a bonus. I am a happy customer!

My only regret now is I did not buy a bigger unit. If you are buying this type of unit for your SUV like me you should consider double DIN unit that has bigger display and buttons. When you are driving, bigger display and controls make a big differences!

    2010 Miata MX-5

Written By Alaska, Meridian, ID on Saturday, October 08, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this HU in my little Miata and paired it with Clearwater Audio Miata specific speakers. Wow... My wife thinks it sounds better than our Denon home stereo system now. I'll have to agree to an extent, it sounds incredible. From classical to rock, the music is crisp and clear. The highs are high, and the lows are subsonic... I'm glad I added sound dampening to the door panels.

I can hear musical details that are normally beyond the rendition of most car stereos, and all without an amplifier. The tuner section is equally fantastic, it pulls in stations with ease that the OEM Clarion HU could never get a lock on. The Bluetooth functionality is also superb and both quickly and easily pairs to our HTC Inspires.

Downside to this was of course installation. But then of course installing anything in a Miata can be painful... The stock harness was too short to pull all of the way out of the dash, so I simply repinned the Metra connector, incorporated the Axxess SWC harness and made a completely removable harness. Oh, you WILL need an antenna coax extension unless you want to rip out the entire dash to reroute the antenna lead. I didn't!

All in all, the KD-R820 BT is a great unit and well worth it. JVC got this unit exactly right!

    C5 Corvette owners, read this!

Written By Jeff, Central NJ on Friday, September 23, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All C5 Corvette owners should be aware that even when you cut or remove the metal bracket in the dash area, you will still only have about 6 3/8" of clearance on the driver side and 7" clearance on the passenger side. I purchased the Clarion FZ501 and found out it wouldn't fit. KEEP IN MIND THAT MOST MEASUREMENTS IGNORE THE DEPTH OF THE ADAPTOR PLUG. Even though the FZ501 "fits" it will not fit once you plug in the adaptor plug.

You have options though. Look at the photos of the back of the head units and focus on those head units that have the plugs on the passenger side of the back. OR simply choose a head unit that is a little shallower like this one.

I have had the system installed for about a week and it is quite intuitive. The Bluetooth recognizes my phone in about 15 - 20 seconds. The audio streaming is great. I ran the rear USB cable down through my plastic tranny tunnel cover and ran it into the console so I can keep my USB flash drive out of sight. The very small Bluetooth adapter sits in the front USB space.

Excellent FM reception. There are a number of preset equalizations so it was easy to find one that sounded best with the stock speaker system.

This unit dropped right into my 94 Jeep Wrangler with no modifications. The Bluetooth paired and connected right up to my Epic 4g with no problems. The satellite connection is excellent. I initially got it because of the front panel AUX and USB inputs but found I won't need them as my phone will stream music and Pandora directly to the unit's Bluetooth AUX stream....very cool.

Great HU. For the price and features you get, you cant beat it. I was considering a Pioneer but the fact their Head Units dont really offer any visual appearance and look boring drew me to the JVC. I previously had a Kenwood deck and one only draw back i would say from this unit is that I had to turn up the gain on my subwoofers amp a quarter turn to really hear it. Bluetooth calling is clear and people say it sounds like im not even in my jeep.

Take your time in tweaking your system. FYI...I used the phase 180 on the deck for my infinity sub and it never sounded better. This unit rocks!! Thanx Crutchfield!

    Great Bluetooth

Written By Mike, Ridgecrest, CA on Thursday, August 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace a good unit that did not have hands free bluetooth. In CA. you must use hands free! I installed this into a F250 Deisel, expecting this to be an acceptable bluetooth. This is a great set up! Crisp, Clear bluetooth! No one can even hear the Deisel on the other end of the phone, even at highway speeds or setting ideling with the windows open. Great performance from the sterio side, much better than the unit it replaced, even though I'm still using the OEM speakers.

If you're into Apple products, this thing was made for them. It reads your contact list, tells you who is callling, turns down the tunes and answers the phone. Plays your I-Pod, has remote control and likes thumb drives with MP3, just a great product!!

I only have one problem with this JVC, I don't have $900 for three more for my other vehicles!

    Polarized glasses warning

I should have read the reviews and realized that this radio cannot be seen when wearing polarized sunglasses - seriously! Anyway everything works great with the radio - I had to reset my droid 2 and the head unit to get them to pair properly over bluetooth. 24/7 tech help was great and helped when the wiring diagram did not for the adapter for my ridgeline antenna. This radio made my stock speakers significantly louder/more tolerable - however I'm upgrading those next.

This stereo works great. I've had it for a couple of months now and totally happy with it. Great price and lots of capability. I'm military stationed in Sasebo Japan. With this stereo you can change the radio frequency to European tuning which is built in the stereo and WALA...now it picks Arm forces network. Plus the bluetooth capability for the cell phone and ipod connectivity. I have everything I need...and then some. The CD Player is loud!!!

    Overall good performer

Written By Ash G, Fayetteville, NC on Friday, July 29, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo receiver is a good value in my opinion. It has solid sound and intuitive controls. I have tried my wife's iPod with success and have even used a thumb drive in the usb port for mp3 files, which play flawlessly. I routed the rear usb cord to a more accessible place and I like that versatility. The bluetooth microphone I routed through the adapter box that sits under the radio. The sound quality of the bluetooth seems comparable to my wife's 2011 Toyota Avalon, so no complaints there. I'm not sure that the bluetooth is switching on automatically however. The front auxiliary port is handy and functions as it ought. One very nice feature is the multitude of colors that you have to choose from. I found one that matches the other car lights and it blends well. My only complaint with this unit is that the trim piece that comes with the radio did not fit properly and I actually had to "whittle" the plastic trim on the car with my Dremel tool so it would click in place which was a major pain in an other wise smooth venture. That was very disappointing and Crutchfield phone support offered no advice when called. For this reason I am probably not going to purchase a second unit for my GMC Sierra. It is a shame, as this unit functions well. Good quality remote.

    Really good but not great

Written By Ben R, Silver Spring, MD on Tuesday, July 19, 2011

I was looking for an all inclusive unit with ipod control and bluetooth audio streaming. This unit works really well and the connection to my droid incredible is great. There are a few limitations in EQ settings but the quality of head units and digital media now lower the necessity for large amounts of personal tweaking. The unit picks up my phone within 30 seconds of starting the car and like other reviews state the ipod connection takes about the same time. Once connected both work flawlessly. Streaming music from my phone (mp3s,pandora,TuneIn Radio, etc) is perfect. Obviously not the same quality as a disc or from the ipod but great to have.

Cons: 1. If you wear polarized glasses you will not be able to see the screen. Whoever designed the screen polarized it 90 degrees off what normal glasses are polarized. Therefore the screen is black and I have to turn my head to the side or remove my glasses to view it. 2. After selecting an artist/album/song with the ipod control when you go back into the menu you will have to start at the beginning of the alphabet. Even if you want to select a different album of the same artist you're currently listening to. A little nit picky but these are things that should've easily been caught while testing. That is how an ipod functions and it isn't uncommon for people to drive with polarized sunglasses.

Hopefully the menu issue can be fixed by an update applied with a USB thumb drive or something.

Really like the Reciever...just a few issues...

Written By Jeffrey, Edgewood, NM on Monday, July 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lately, I've been driving my Dodge RAM into town (20 miles) each day. I absolutely love this receiver with a few minor issues that don't preclude me from highly recommending it to any one looking for a solid replacement for an auto radio.

Things I love: (1) great sound quality! (2) Works great with Sirius Satellite radio! (yes, satellite radio in my truck!) (3) Was very easy to install with the included Crutchfield information. (4) My Android phone's bluetooth connects up with the receiver and plays my music directly through bluetooth! No wire to phone, now! This feature works amazingly well.

Things I wish this receiver had: (1) Needs bigger letters for time. My truck only uses the radio for time. The clock is small letters at the bottom not easily seen when glancing at the receiver while driving. (2) This one bums me out a little...once you set up the favorite stations for the Sirius Satellite radio, you can not scan your favorite stations (unlike FM/AM favorites where you can). This is a tad bit annoying given that I tend to want to scan only my favorites most of the time.

Aside from the two issues described, I am quite happy with being able to listen to Satellite radio and play my phone's music in my 2005 Dodge Ram pickup.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first purchase from Crutchfield, and I have to say that I am impressed with the deal I got and the stereo as well.

Installation was _very_ easy, though the only trouble I had was actually getting it to lock in while mounting it, but I eventually got it in and mounted anyway. I have a Jeep Liberty '04, and my old stereo kept skipping on scratched discs. I wanted a nice, decent upgrade.

It's very easy to use and configure. From my old factory radio, this is definitely a big improvement. My old, scratched up discs played without a problem. It made my stereo even louder, but I can also still have it pretty quiet as well. I love how you can customize all the colors, and I also like the illumination settings for driving at night. The bluetooth was easy to setup, and the quality was great for hands-free calling. I was also able to navigate my contacts list easily, too. The phone battery and signal strength is also displayed on the stereo, which is very useful. Using an iPod was easy to do, you simply just plug it in to the front USB and it works. I can also upgrade to HD Radio or Satellite radio whenever I want.

Overall, a really great stereo for all the nifty things it has. Buy this one if you're looking to upgrade from your factory stereo. It's worth it.

Why am I limited to 5 stars?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can pick the colors of both sides of the display for day and night, the brightness for day/night, and what time it changes.

Bluetooth pairing was incredibly easy. With my Droid X, I can scroll through my contacts, and it pairs automatically when my car turns on.I can even play music wirelessly from it! When I get a call, it automatically pauses the music on my ipod, and I can talk through the unit with the included microphone attachment and my speakers. It even shows my battery and signal levels from my phone on the top of the screen!

I like the ipod playback. It takes a bit longer than I'd like to read the contents when connecting (15-25 seconds) but after the initial reading there's no wait time. I can scroll through the artists or song titles or albums with the wheel, or hold up or down to scroll by letter. It has three lines of display so scrolling through is easier than with two lines or one line.

I can tell a noticeably better sound clarity at higher volumes than my old stereo. Unless you are in a menu, it always shows the current time.

I haven't tried radio yet, because I don't listen to it.

The HPF/LPF settings on it are a welcome change from my old stereo. I have HPF all the way up, as I am putting my subs back in my car soon. The separate sub controls are nice. Audio controls are amazing.

I have had multiple friends state that when they upgrade their car stereo, they will pick this model.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all let me say this, for all those that think Crutchfield is more expensive than others... I say you get what you pay for. In this case I got more than what I paid for. Tech support is the Bomb and I consider myself technical savvy but I needed a little help with some instructions at 10:30pm MST from the BIG BOYS and they were there for me, Great Job!!!

Now my buddy purchased the Kenwood KDC-X695 from here and I tell ya that it's a very nice HU. I couldn't be a copycat. So after some comparisons I went with the JVC. I'm not disappointed at all. This is a really nice HU. So nice I have to upgrade my factory speakers, so I got Infinity Kappa's 682.9cf's on the way. So the controls buttons everyone'sw complaining that's too small, glare from the sun not allowing you to see the display you'll get use to it. Don't let that be the deal breaker.

Bluetooth works and sounds great. Being able to stream Pandora and music is awesome. Install instruction and harness (For Freeee)

I did have to get +5 regulator stop the popping noise to the factory sub, tech hooked me up with part # for Radio shack, less than $2.

Once you get the audio tuned and play with all the bells and whistles you'll just love it. The sound it puts out is awesome. It a prefect HU to start off a booming system and I would Highly Recommend this to everyone.

5 Stars for Great product, 5 Stars for Great Customer Service!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I simply love everything about this stereo, no flaws, BT is crystal clear, adjustments to sound are fantastic, definitely an A+. You can not get all that is packed into this stereo for the price anywhere else. Crutchfield was amazing, good installation guides even with lots of experience, things can always be easier with great instructions.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The good news is that I can recommend this radio as all the features work. But as with many pieces of electronics equipment, you instantly feel like the engineers and bean counters got everything working and just stopped saying, "There, that'll do." The buttons are too small, it takes too long for bluetooth devices to connect when the radio is turned on, Bluetooth isn't built in, but is a part of a little card that is stuck in one of the usb ports (so you only really have one usb port), the screen is partially obstructed along the top if the radio is mounted low, it doesn't have an internal mic, you have to use the external mic which has cheap little plastic mounts. I could go on and on. My dad used to say that when a new house looks 75% built, there is 75% left to be done. That's kinda how I feel about this head unit. Since everything works, I gave it 4 stars, however, it's not an entirely satisfying experience to use it. I will say that my daughter likes all the pretty colors you can choose from on the screen. While I do have these criticisms, I'm not sure any head unit is much better.
