For great looks and great sound

JVC's KD-R840BT CD receiver ups the ante with its 5-zone Functional Variable Color faceplate. You can adjust any of the five distinct zones on the face to your liking, for a custom look that'll match your car's interior or your sense of style. And you can even have selected zones change color with your volume adjustments.

The sound measures up to the sharp styling, with a strong internal amp and a 3-band parametric equalizer, plus high- and low-pass filters to tailor sound output to your speakers. If you're looking to build a system with external amps, three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs ensure the cleanest performance from your system. Front and rear USB inputs give you more flexibility for connecting USB devices.

JVC KD-R840BT

The 5-zone variable color display gives you plenty of customization options.

Bluetooth® equipped for safety and convenience

Bluetooth is great for talking hands-free, but that's not the only way it can enhance your car audio experience. Pair up JVC's KD-R840BT CD receiver with your smartphone, and enjoy audio streaming of Internet radio for more musical variety. And, with many Android™ phones, you can receive text message notifications too.

And here's a cool feature — let's say you've got a business phone and a personal phone. Most car stereos with Bluetooth make you choose one for use in the car, but the KD-R840BT lets you pair two phones at once. And when a call comes in, the receiver will blink either blue or red, depending on the phone. So you'll either have your business game face on, or be ready to relax and unwind when chatting with a friend.

Android™ smartphone compatibility

JVC's Smart Music Control works with Android phones to support voice commands for controlling your music. You'll be able to change songs, search your music, and more without raising a finger. But if you like to get your digits involved, you can create playlists with the Mood Blender, or even adjust EQ settings with your phone. And this app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control many functions using finger swipes and gestures — for example, tap the screen to play and pause, or swipe right to skip forward a track. So pop your Android phone in a mount, and you can reach down and skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

Internet radio control

PANDORA® Internet Radio is one of the most popular streaming stations on the web. iPhone users can control PANDORA through this JVC when connected to the USB slot, while Android and Blackberry owners control Pandora through the Bluetooth connection. Either way, you'll enjoy access to your favorite stations and display of song, artist, and album information on the receiver's screen while you're listening.

Never miss your favorite radio programs

Do you have news, sports, or other radio programs you don't want to miss? The KD-R840BT's radio timer feature automatically switches on the radio and tunes in the correct station, no matter what source you're on at the time. You can set the timer to work one time or daily, so it's great for catching the shows you enjoy during your daily commute.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Great product, sounds and looks good. Love the Bluetooth feature!

I believe for the price this is a great deck. The hands free bluetooth my friends say is better than in my 2013 f350 when im talking to them thru system...which is kind of scarey since this is just over a hundred, any way decent sound,,,controls I had to look up in manual to fully operate and we will see on durability since its a new purchase

I bought this stereo for my car because it looked cool, it could change colors, and it was ready for subs. I really like the rear USB port, I hooked up my iPod to my radio and it is in the center console now. I've definitely had better receivers, I like Pioneer the best, but this is still a great one. I'm satisfied with the purchase.

Pros: Rear USB I love it, trillions of different colors, Bluetooth, looks spunky sittin in the dash.

Cons: It can get kindof tricky figuring out how to use the receiver, I think Pioneer receivers sound more clear, pressing the center button either pauses or mutes the music and takes some getting used to.

This radio has so many features that it has taken me a bit to fanagle the perfect sound for my car. But it sounds perfect. My kid loves changing the colors to match what he's wearing so I suppose it passes the kid cool factor as well. The rear USB fit perfect under the dash so now I have a hidden charger and it got rid of the unsightly iPhone charger in the center console.

Pros: Looks great, sound great and great price. It even remembered my station presets after disconnecting the battery.

    Cons: None.

I am pleased with the JVC radio. The price is good and it performs well so it is a good buy. The sound quality is better than my stock radio was in my town & country van.

Pros: Instructions were good and easy to do. Splicing the connector on was made easy with the suppplied wire connectors. The adapter for the radio fit well. It paired with my i phone easiely and works excellent.

Cons: The radio operating instructions are a bit complitated and require come time to get right. Lots of features to understand.

Bought this for my wife for Christmas. Its a very cool, feature rich stereo with great sound. Install was a breeze, setup and configurations was super easy. Setup and sync with her smartphone was a breeze, now she is listening to Bluetooth streamed music and taking calls off her phone. Besides all the great features, the display has a super cool look with a zillion different color combinations etc. I would recommend to anyone looking to replace an older or stock stereo.

Pros: Lots of features, Bluetooth for phone calls, imports contacts, stream any kind of music off smartphone, connect ipod, mp3, other devices.

Cons: buttons are a bit cluttered, Bluetooth mic sound is marginal.

Really, really love this radio. Put this in my 03 Wrangler after my old radio went out. There were many more features than I had originally thought which i really loved. Super easy to use, easy to install and overall a great radio.

Pros: Great Sound, easy use, easy install, not to many bad things to say.

Cons: When I got the kit it was missing several parts including bolts and one connector which I found at a local hardware store which isn't that big of a problem.

Needed to replace a failed radio in a Mountaineer. This provides a good range of features including the BT connectivity for only a little more than a repair to the old radio. The BT worked very well with my Samsung Android phone for both phone calls & Pandora. It gives me the capabilities found in new car factory systems at a much lower cost. Comments from people on the other end of the phone were very positive for clarity & volume. As far as the radio sound, this is one star down due to my inability to run it higher with the factory speakers - not the radios fault, but couldn't test the high power end. Overall, the installation was not very difficult if you have a basic understanding of auto dashes and radios. Even without that, the instructions were good so even a novice could probably handle it without much challenge. Don't forget the second acknowledgement for the BT pairing. That one bit me because I didn't read it well. I did have some speed bumps with the supplied harness / cabling, but Crutchfield shipped out a replacement and afterward, went the extra effort to make everything right. I would definitely consider buying from them again.

Pros: Good sound, great BT / phone features. Programing relatively intuitive after a quick skim of the manual. Good support from Crutchfield.

Cons: Obnoxious initial demo mode - could trigger an epileptic fit :) .

The Radio installation was a little more complicated than I had first thought for the 1983 Mustang convertible due to the 2 channel factory installed amplifier. I ended up having to completely bypass most of the factory wiring associated with the amp. I used the installation kit and wired the included connectors directly to all the installed speakers. I did not use the PAC SOEM-4 Factory Integration Adapter nor was it needed after wiring direct to the speakers. The wiring in the Mustang does not match any of the install kit or normal radio wiring colors, so it is best to get a drawing of the factory radio installation. I tried every way that technical help thought to wire the PAC SOEM-4 Factory Integration Adapter, but couldn't get more than a normal conversation level of speaker noise, so that is why I wired direct to the speakers and I ended up not using the PAC-4 I should have done that in the first place. It sounds great and has the volume needed for a convertible.

Pros: After installation works great with the satellite radio option

Cons: Lots of modifications to the dash and wiring. It has an obnoxious demo mode the comes up everytime power is removed from the unit. I had disconnected the battery for the install and did lots of temporary test, got tied of the demo mode.

Great head unit, forced to buy after my car was broken into and head unit was stolen. Chose this headunit as it had all the same features I needed. (Bluetooth and aux cord really) I really noticed the difference going from 2v to 4.8v preamp voltage. nice little pick-me-up after losing the previous head unit.

Pros: Bluetooth, Color control, clear audio

Cons: Would've been nice to have a full LCD display, but I knew that before I bought the unit.

I only put JVC players in my vehicles and have since 1998. The player that is currently in my honda has been thru 3 cars and was purchased new back in 2002. Its still works great and that is why it was a no brainer that I bought this for my daughters first car. You get so much for the $$. The mic for the hands free calling works great and there are so many settings to really tweak the sound you want to get. I'll never own another player other than JVC. I recommend this for anyone but especially parents that want their kids to have hands free calling to make it safer on the road.

Pros: Great value. Great sound. Awesome Features. Very easy to use. Bluetooth Tech is crisp and clear.

Cons: Quite honestly the remote that comes with it is unnecessary but since its included for free no biggie. I just never use it.

Installed this in a Mercury Mariner. Couldn't have been easier! Heard the difference immediately, even through the supposedly "Premium" Audiophile System from Ford. Changed out the crap factory speakers and did custom install of Sony 6 1/2 component speakers, even though it was stated that they would not fit! Sounds INCREDIBLE now! Even through the factory amp and subwoofer! Couldn't be happier with all the extras like Bluetooth, Sirius XM radio which I actually Bluetooth using my free XM app which negates the need for a separate antenna (Sorry Crutchfield...) The DEMO Mode for the lights is a lil tricky to get rid of but once its done, you actually kind of mish the flashing lights and have to tweak it again to look as cool as before.

There are several features I like on this unit, most notably that I can play Pandora through my Android phone and use the unit's remote control to change the song. No need to go back and forth between the phone and the receiver. However, the receiver is not user-friendly. I read the manual top to bottom and spent about 30 minutes trying to set things up but I still can't figure out how to use folders on the USB drive or how to fix the lighting. The receiver display flashes and changes colors like crazy and it looks like a rave party in my car at night- so embarrassing. I am sure Crutchfield can help me fix these things but I just don't have the time to mess with it. The sound might be good but I wouldn't know. I bought the unit bc I was advised to by Crutchfield bc of its high preamp output voltage but found out after installation that my car's amp can't handle it and it basically sounds like crap if I turn it up past regular listening volume. I'm not happy with this purchase or the advice I received from Crutchfield.

Got this radio installed in a few hours, took plenty of breaks :). Got all the parts I needed from crutchfield to put this in my 09 Trailblazer. Crutchfield gave me the instructions to put it in, and I had no problems with the installation at all. Put the mike on my steering wheel column, and haven't had any problems wih anyone hearing me talking normally, with the windows up. Synced up to my iphone without any problems. Even listen to my music through the bluetooth, no problem. I had gotten the adapter box through Crutchfield so my chimes work fine. The vox I got was CRUX SOCGM-17.

So far this seems to be a great radio. The installation and setup was fairly simple as systems go anymore. I was very impressed with the bluetooth setup and function. My previous radio was always a pain to link with and then manage my Droid Razr. This one links and functions as it should without problems. Receiving calls and dialing the phone from the deck has worked flawlessly so far. I haven't tried the Pandora, MP3 disc or USB functions yet but so far everything is as documented.

Pros: Simple installation and setup. Free factory wiring connector adapter was correct. Function of the radio was great and performed as documented on everything I've used so far. Good sound, great full featured stereo for the $$$.

Cons: I thought that the free double DIN installation adapter and the instructions that were included were a bit lame but after a couple of calls to Crutchfield they worked well enough and the final installation looks great.

This stereo has it all. 2 USB ports, AUX port, Pandora, Bluetooth, etc. Also, its ease of use is a big plus, everything is simple to use and to figure out even without having to consult to the manual. I have owned many head units such as Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, Dual, Valor, and JVC. Always have gone back to JVC for the sound quality, its cool factor, and ease of use. Bluetooth works great. Good sound quality and connects to my phone automatically when I turn on my car. Also can play Pandora through Bluetooth which is really nice. The light display is AWESOME! Especially on demo mode. Another great product from JVC

Overall the JVC KD-R840BTis a nice head unit. It's well manufactured it doesn't feel or look cheap. It's got a great built-in amplifier. When it comes to the sound quality I was not all that pleased. Great bass, but I felt the mids and highs did not meet my expectations. Although I played with different EQ modes and trying to tweak the EQ, I still wasn't pleased with the end results. Pairing with my iPhone was a breeze and the Bluetooth works great for both streaming and calls. In terms of looks, even though it does not have a full-dot LCD it looks great. Overall a very good head unit. If it wasn't because my sound quality standards are very high, I would've given this unit an excellent rating.

Pros: Great power Looks Packed with a good amount of features for its price

Cons: Sound quality No illumination on buttons when unit is off

This unit is easy to install, sounds great and has a lot of features. The Bluetooth feature works great and syncs well with the wife's IPhone. The microphone has a long cord and the sound quality is very good when making/receiving a call, the people on the other end couldn't tell we were talking to them through the radio. It has more than enough power to drive the Polk speakers and powered sub in my Jeep. The dual USB ports are nice, the cord from the rear of the unit reaches all the way into the glove box. I do agree with some others that using some of the features is too complicated (like setting presets 7-16) and that the screen is hard to see in the daylight, but for the money it is far better than the stock unit it replaced.

Pros: Great sound and power, Bluetooth connectivity, dual USB ports, IPod/iPhone controls

Cons: Complexity of programming presets, screen glare

Great unit! Replace the stock unit on my 86 BMW 528e (the premium system). Even the stock speakers sound much better. The installation instructions were great and the retrofit mounting tray (with bending tabs) works very well. However, the wires do get caught on the release tabs when pulling the unit out after the initial install (that's why I gave it 4 stars). I later added the Sound Ordnance flat subwoofer under the back seat and BAM! The system is just right for my daughter's use.

Pros: Great fit, easy wiring, great sound.

Cons: Sharp edges and release tabs on the retrofit mounting tray catch wires making subsequent removal difficult.

This was an upgrade from a previous JVC Aresenal KDA-615, because I wanted Bluetooth. I was swayed toward the higher end model over the current 740BT and X250BT because of the dedicated EQ button on the front. I don't care about the 5 color zones. Dual USB ports (front, rear) is a nice bonus. Good: Bluetooth calling is awesome. People on the other end have never complained, or even mentioned that it sounds like speakerphone, and the voice quality on my end is excellent. That is awesome. The sound quality is very good. Really, what it does, it does very well. EQ button cycle includes subwoofer level, very handy. Bad: When playing through USB in either Head or Ipod mode, pressing the volume button pauses, but playing via EXT mode it only mutes. Also, in Pandora and BT mode pressing the volume button just mutes. In BT mode, you can pause by pressing the Menu button, but in Pandora mode, Menu brings up your list of stations, so there's no pause in Pandora mode! Why would I ever mute when I can pause? From time to time, I also get connection errors in Pandora mode, and I have to unplug, cycle through the inputs, and try again, sometimes going so far as to power off the unit. I also find that USB mode is louder than other modes, even with input volume turned to -5 (you can balance input levels individually in the menus). The unit auto-plays from iphone when you plug it in, so if the first song on your player is loud, prepare to be blasted.

Pros: Bluetooth calling and audio streaming. Pandora on iphone works over BT, though can't thumbs up/down songs. Can pause though (press menu button) Front, rear, sub RCA outputs. Good sound EQ button access to Sub, bass, mid, treble levels Radio data (shows station name, song title) USB, Pandora, BT modes all show track info (Artist, album, title)

Cons: pressing volume knob is context dependent pause/mute. should always pause except on radio. Way too dim in daylight even at brightest setting. No easy way to flip through preset radio stations. 1-6 are on buttons, or you can press Menu, then use knob to flip to desired station. But the knob is touchy, so it tends to skip ahead quickly, and on-screen display doesn't keep up with station names quickly. Could benefit from a 4-way button to seek up/down and scroll through presets up/down.

I used this to replace my stock deck in my '05 Colorado, and I have to say that I am very happy with it. I was originally looking for a DD deck but I could never find one that felt I would be happy with, and for the prices of them I didn't want to chance it. I found this along with several others with about the same features, but for the price this one blew them all away. The Bluetooth works flawlessly with my phone and the mic that comes with the deck, that I mounted just above the seat belt harness, works so well that my friends didn't even know I was using a mic, they usually sound like you're talking in a cave. All the user functions are easy to understand and if you're looking for a deck to match your interior lights this is the one. I don't care what color it is you will be able to match it or come very close. Six channels, blue tooth, syncs with pretty much any popular device out there. You cant beat it! Only issue I would have is the deck itself looks a little on the old school side. I had a clarion about 10 years ago that looked about the same. That is really just nit-picking though. with the customizable colors it didn't really make a lasting issue.

Pros: Price A ton of features

Cons: Looks a little dated for new tech

Just installed this radio today in my 2012 Ram 1500. With the vehicle kit that came for free it fit perfect in my dash. Radio was easy to setup after installation. Sounds great, has 3 different loudness functions. Setting up different color schemes was cool. Connecting my iPhone via Bluetooth was easy. Love that the radio included the mic for the handsfree talking. I haven't tested the USB ports yet and only because I'm able to listen to my music via Bluetooth. I guess I'll use the USB to charge my phone. Insturctions pretty easy to follow, I had all my wires tied in (with vehicle adapter sold separately) in about 2 hours and that's soldering and heat shrinking all the wires. This is my first time buying from Crutchfield and I'm very pleased with my decision.

Pros: Easy setup, wireless remote control, Bluetooth mic included.

    4 questions already asked

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: If two phones are connected at the same time, whichever one is in use first would take priority over the other. For example if Phone A receives a phone call then Phone B will not be able to receive or make a phone call via Bluetooth. Same goes for the audio, if Phone B is playing Bluetooth Audio then Phone A would not be able to stream audio via Bluetooth. Unfortunately we no longer stock this radio, and I'm not sure if we have another model that will allow two phones to be connected at the same time. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Mar 22, 2014 ]  Staff
I have had no issues with radio reception with this unit however, I live in the Atlanta area so I do not go through any rural areas. When I was installing the unit, there was an extra wire on the antenna adapter but nothing anywhere said what that wire was or what it was for. I finally figured out that it was a power wire for the antenna. After I hooked that wire into the remote power wire in the back of the unit, I had no issues with reception. [ CASEY  Feb 18, 2014 ]
Great sensitivity, I get my country stations all over my area and up into the hills here in northern cali! Hope this helps [ JAMES  Feb 17, 2014 ]
You will get better sound quality when bypassing the factory amplifier. However, that will require you to run the wiring harness from the radio location to the amplifier location. Please contact an Advisor by phone or chat for more details on your installation. [ Jeff  Nov 22, 2013 ]  Staff
