Perform a full audio upgrade in just one step — install JVC's KD-S100 CD receiver, and you'll swear you just added new speakers and a sub, too. It features a one-of-a-kind Bongiovi Acoustics Digital Power Station™ sound processing system, which compensates for your vehicle's sonic shortcomings to improve audio performance dramatically — especially if you still have your factory speakers.

Digital Power Station technology
Legendary sound engineer and music producer Tony Bongiovi developed the Digital Power Station with JVC. The goal — to provide studio-quality sound in any car. It's the product of the extensive research the engineers at Bongiovi Acoustics have performed on the acoustic properties of hundreds of vehicles.

Once activated, the processor optimizes power distribution, extends frequency response, and adds harmonics to maximize speaker performance without straining your system. The result? Big, natural, beautiful sound. With the Digital Power Station engaged, instrument separation becomes more apparent, the soundstage is elevated to an optimum level, and all frequencies are enhanced to give you a truly rich listening experience.

Note: If you have aftermarket speakers, be sure to read the "Bongiovi Acoustics" section in "Details" for more detailed info on how the Digital Power Station optimizes sound in your vehicle.

Virtual Subwoofer™
The Digital Power Station enables your speakers to produce maximum bass without distortion so you get the feeling of having a subwoofer, with no additional installation necessary.

Handles all your tunes
Play your MP3 and WMA files you've burned to disc, loaded on a USB flash drive, or copied to an SD™ card. You'll have tunes to spare for your next trip, and you'll see song info on the receiver's display. You'll also appreciate the motorized faceplate. With the touch of a button, it glides down to reveal the CD and SD card slots, then slides smoothly back into place.

Add satellite radio and iPod® control, too
The Bongiovi Digital Power Station applies its magic no matter what source you choose. Add the commercial-free music and endless entertainment of satellite radio, or control your iPod with an optional adapter. Three sets of preamp outputs let you add amps and subs to your system.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

I installed this a few months ago on a 97 Sentra. I was amazed by the sound difference that it made, considering that the original speakers were already torn apart. This head unit sounded even better after replacing the stock speakers.

    Poor detachable face design

Poor detachable face design, deck gets hot, but sound quality isn't bad; just limited in EQ control.

    Pros: Nice sound quality.

Cons: Not enough EQ options/control; especially for sub-woofer. The plastic tab behind the detachable face will eventually break off or wear down, and the unit will be unusable. Mine lasted 2 months before it broke. I only remove the face 2x a day; once when I get to work and another when I get home from work.

ive had this stereo for about 1 year now and id have to say its really nice compared to my silverado factory stereo. great value at the price i paid for it at Crutchfield.com but i never would think it would be worth the 600 dollars as the supposed MSRP value of it. using a usb flash drive and SD card for addition storage is really nice. wish i woulda got one that had bluetooth though

While the Bongiovi Acoustic processor is wonderful, the fact that you have to purchase $80 adapters to connect anything to the unit (even a line in) is ridiculous! I purchased the unit and the iPod adapter...it doesn't support iPhones! The Virtual Bass feature is a joke and the menu is nearly impossible to navigate. If you want pretty good sound with a bunch of other lame features, buy it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this deck a couple of weeks ago in my 03 Grand Cherokee. I gotta say that the highs and mids sound amazing, the sounds come through strong without hurting your ears. But I'm noticing a lack of bass from this system. I loaded the CD that came with it and expected to be wowed by the bass, but no, this wasn't the case. In order to get an acceptable level of bass I have the treble to -2 and the bass to the max. But it's still weak at low to medium volumes. The stock deck produced way more bass out of the same speakers; that's my baseline for comparison. Reading the reviews brought me to the bongiovi website, I see that they released 6 other vehicle maps. My next step is to try each of these out, hopefully one of these will correct the bass issue. ... and then I'll give this deck 5 stars. BTW, I'm using aftermarket 6x9s in the front doors, stock tweeters in the dash, and stock rear speakers, all running off the stock infinity amp.

    Not impressed at all

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Im not impressed at all. First and foremost Im into car audio, so Im the type of user with the volume up high, like to be able to control sound, add amps/speakers. I have used much equipment- Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion, and JVC and I like JVC head units but this one is terrible. The unit DOES sound good at low to moderate volumes. However it breaks apart horrible at higher volume settings. There is absolutely NO control over the EQing of the unit. Just standard Bass/Treble in which I have to set the bass to -10 and treble to 1 to even use it... With the Bogiovi off it sounds hollow, lifeless and almost out of phase. Which is NOT normal. I believe its been altered for a "wow" factor when you turn the DPS on... This unit was a direct swap out from a JVC AVX11- and Im going to put my old unit back in. I despise this unit so much Im returning it... Which is rare for me to do.... This unit WOULD be good for someone who doesnt intend on amplifying cabin speakers AND doesnt listen to their music loud. However it fails at everything exceeding that.

Just installed the radio last night and it sounds pretty darn good. Night and day verses the stock radio in my 2008 Corolla. There are Beta profiles available at the Bongiovi website that let you customize the sound profile for your car. I found the "small car" variation to sound better than what was on the Crutchfield CD. This is definitely a "bang-for-your-buck" product. It looks like Bongiovi Acoustics will release custom profiles specific to your vehicle (just like was released when people bought the radio as a dealer option!!) if they are able to get 100 people to register for their forum. If you own this radio you should navigate to Bongiovi site and sign up so everyone can enjoy the radio the way that Bongiovi originally intended you to!

As others have stated, the Bongiovi is over rated, mainly because its sold as being able to adapt to your car. This however couldn't happen with my car because the included CD that was suppose to allow customization didn't even work. The stereo plays fine and the radio reception is acceptable, there are a few flaws. The SD card is extremely picky about brand and size. Official supported size is something like 512 mb, although online support says up to 2GB MIGHT work. However the USB port works fantastic. As for the Bongiovo feature goes for sound, it definetly increases the highs, but does nothing for the bass. The worst part is that there is no override feature that allows you to customize the eq, well actaully there is no eq period. You either have Bongiovi on or off and thats it. There is no quick select buttons for radion stations, you have to use the remote only and that takes some change in the usual way you operated an in car radio, but its not a biggie for me. The sportster Sirius unit plugs directly into the back and the line in feature is used to listen to SAT audio. There is an aux port for ipod, or you can purchase a seperate adapter to plug in to the CD changer control if you want the head unit to control your ipod. The motorized faceplate is a nice feature but I am sure it will wear out just like my SH-99 did. I love JVC products and they perform as well as any other product.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo suffers from great features, but poor implementation. The buttons are tiny. The UI is not intuitive, and the BonGiovi is overrated. The sound enhancement is basically nothing more than the Bass Boost buttons that have been around forever. Sound with BonGiovi is OK, but bass reproduction sound fake and overdone. No way to customize levels other than with the Bongiovi. In very cold weather, you should remove a USB drive before powering up the unit, then reinsert it after it warms up a few degrees... Mine froze up the other morning, and I had to turn the car off and back on after 10 minutes to get the unit to reset and come to life. Those are the negatives. Positives are that it does have good sound, decent power, great features, and is CHEAP! I'm definitely happy with the unit for the price. It went in my new(ish) Ford F250 that only had AM/FM, and is definitely an upgrade. The supplied adapter kit didn't fit very well, and 'cups' on one edge for a less than perfect fit.... but I ended up with an adapter kit, harness and head unit for a great price. The truck is a work truck, and will never be in a show - so it's good enough for the implementaion.

Sounds great but a little more base would be nice. The installation went great thanks to the Excellent instructions supplied by Crutchfield. My 8 year old son did the whole installation He took the dash trim out, removed the old unit then soldered wires on the adapter plug to the supplied wireing supplied with the deck and put the new one in. Dont even think about paying some big box store $60.00 plus parts to install your deck. I must admit my 8 year old knows more about electronics than me but the documentation supplied by Crutchfield makes it so simple. I would not pay $500.00 for this deck but Its comperable to a $200 to $250 deck and is a bargain at this price. Crutchfield is the place to buy because they supply all of the adaptors, trim pieces and excellent installation instructions.

I purchased this unit to replace the stock JBL receiver in my 02 Camry. It definately brings the factory speakers to life but seems to be lacking a bit at lower volumes. As you turn it up (with the Bongiovi activated) it sounds good, just the opposite of the factory unit. I do notice the heat issue previously mentioned. The remote is fine but the settings on the unit are not very user friendly. The USB port is great, a thumb drive is all you need. Overall it is a pretty good unit and I am pleased with the sound. For the price, it would be hard to beat but the original 600+ dollar listing, no way. All in all it is a nice, inexpensive upgrade.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stereo replaced factory equipment in a 2000 Chevy Silverado. With kit and instructions, I got the old stereo out and this one installed in less than 15 minutes. Quick and easy. Stereo sounds AWESOME through my 6 1/2" Alpines. Bass is clean and sharp, as are the mids and highs. Nice high-end sound. USB thumbdrive feature is wonderful and works flawlessly. SD slot will not recognize SDHC and, as stated in the manual, will recognize no more than 255 files. I bought a 2GB card and put 233 songs on it. It refused to recognize one of the 8 folders I created, so I moved the files from that folder into one of the other ones and deleted it. Then tested again and halfway through playing my 5th folder, the stereo displayed "read problems" and failed back to radio. I'm THOROUGHLY disappointed in what should have been a unique feature to set this stereo apart. Put simply, there are plenty of great features in this stereo, including its power and precision sound, but don't buy it for its terrible SD feature-- As a matter of fact, this feature is so poor, I wouldn't advertise it even exists. Thankfully, the other features more than make up for it, and at this price... What a deal!

Found this radio in the Crutchfield catalog and after comparing it to several others I decided that this was the ONE!!! Got the radio for Christmas. The install was simple and after installing the included CD software the sound was completely incredible on the stock factory speakers of my 2003 Nissan Altima. I wouldn't want to give this head unit up for anything except one thing, so onto the reason for my 3 star rating. The reason I picked this radio was because my stock radio did not have the capability of playing my iPod touch. The radio came but the iPod adapter was back ordered so I went ahead and installed the unit while I waited. It was then that I found out that this radio even with the iPod adapter IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the iPod Touch or iPhone. This was such a disappointment for such a high quality radio. More of the disappointment came because my wife told the Crutchfield rep that she was purchasing it for use with an iPod touch and nobody told her that it would not work. You can only find out that it won't work by going to the actual iPod adapter page and then clicking on the hands on research page. So unfortunately, even though this is an outstanding radio with phenomenal features and sound I have to say that I am disappointed that it lacks the support for the iPod Touch and iPhone. Keep that in mind when ordering this product. Otherwise it is excellent as far as sound and quality.

Purchased this because I could not walk away from this deal. Installed this into a 1991 LTD Crown Vic that was an ex-cop car. Matched it with Polk Momo 650's in the front and Polk Momo 690's in the rear. Wow! This is an amazing set up in this boat of a car. I figured with all the plush interior components, it would be good sound proofing for the expensive speakers and quite unique Bongiovi Accoustic radio. I was pleasantly surprised with the studio sounds of this combo. If you like big high's, then this radio is the ticket when you actuate the B button it boosts your sound by about 10 with crystal clearity! When you do not use the Bongiovi boost button, the radio is quite flat, so I highly recommend you always playing radio and CD's with this option. For the price, you will get quite the kick out of doing so well for the money. Get one of these while you can, they use to cost in the neighborhood of $ 650.00.

I have been using this unit for about a month now. It sounds great. I have bought many head units over the years, many different brands and each sounded very good. But this is the best sounding unit I ever had and the price is great. I do miss having the radio buttons on the unit but I like using the remote even better. I have read reviews about lack of bass but if you crank the volume up you can really feel the bass. I replaced my speakers with 6 1/2" Rockford Fosgates in the front and 6X9 Alpines in the rear. I just love riding around with the volume cranked up. It doesn't have ipod control built in but then I don't want that anyway. It also doesn't have HD radio built in either but that's ok too. For this price in my opinion this JVC is a steal. The Bonjiovi is the iceing on the cake....One last thing. I never buy my units from anyone but Crutchfield. They have the best costumer service I have ever seen so I keep coming back.

I bought this to replace my factory deck, which didn't play MP3 files. In that regard, it is a tremendous improvement, especially now that I've figured out how to assign the tags to the MP3s. The display is very nice compared to the other decks available in this price range. It would have been nice if this deck had more equalizer options - it only has bass and treble controls. The Biongiovi processor accounts for some of this, but having a parametric equalizer to further fine tune the sound would have been awesome. I am looking forward to trying the USB input and adding a sub, since the bass output from this deck, while OK, could be improved greatly with a sub (true of most car stereos these days). I needed to also buy a dash kit to retain the factory info settings in my 2007 Pontiac G6 - I reviewed that, as well. All in all, I'm glad I bought this deck. I plan on adding a sub, and maybe some aftermarket speakers someday - that should raise the level of performance.

    Great Sounding Addition!

Written by: Anonymous from Akron, OH on December 11, 2009

Put in my 1995 Camaro Z28 with the 5-speaker Bose system. Bought the addt'l Scosche line converter since the Bose system uses inline "mini amps" on each indv speaker rather than a central amplifier. The KD-S100 was a great addition to the vehicle! The 14 year old Bose speakers never sounded so good! I was concerned there would be a problem with the Bongiovi system running through the Scosche, but there are no problems whatsoever, just great sound. Also, the unit comes with an updated sound profile disc from Bongiovi right in the box to update the factory universal profile provided by JVC. I did download some of the other beta sound profiles from the Bongiovi website prior to receiving my unit, but I haven't even bothered installing them. Note: The SD slot is NOT limited to 512MB cards! I am currently using a 2GB card formatted with the FAT system. I currently have all of my files in the root directory, with no folders. This might be why some people are running into problems. Here are the pros and cons as I see them: Pros- SD slot, USB slot, iPod compatible, Sirius compatible, great FM reception, great sound out of factory stock speakers, nice looking face with easy-to-read display and various screen saver options, motorized face with memory tilt, song labeling feature for CDs and radio station labeling, solid CD playback with no skipping, even with my aggressively tuned suspension. Cons- No preset buttons on the face, no RDS capability for radio stations.

I purchased this as a replacement for the factory radio in my PT cruiser after the CD changer died. It seems to be an excellent product for the money. The sound quality in the vehicle with factory speakers is definately improved. Installation was straightforward and all the correct adapters were included. The buttons are tiny but that is common with 1 DIN faceplates. The front panel USB port is especially handy and the MP3 capability eliminates the need for the CD changer. It will drive the speakers louder than the factory unit with far less distortion. This seems to to be a nice product at a good price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought it for my mother's car. Sounded better, but can't ask for much from a ford escort. at this price it is great, but if it was still, or actually ever $630 dollars, forget it. The motorized face is really a nice perk and the angles you can tilt it to are convenient for a low sitting dash. The Bonjiovi feature is basically a loud button, but I didn't give it enough of a listen to decipher how every type of music comes out with it. The buttons are TINY, can't read whats written on them and if you tried you would run right off the road. Definitely would have to get used to the button layout. Personally, I like the idea of having 6 preset buttons so I dont always have to use the remote, or click the right or left button every time I wanted to switch a preset. switching back from tuner to CDs takes longer than normal players should. overall I would rate it at about a 6 to 7 of a player, definitely a 10 for bang-for-your-buck. I read alot more reviews here, and I must say that the illumination is not a problem. It is not blinding, its actually quite subtle, which is nice, considering I always see aftermarket stereos that you might need sunglasses at night to look at. But I did see alot of problems with the time it takes to load a cd when switching from the tuner. Like I said, great for the price, not for the original price of $629.

Sound: Decent, not great. While the basic sound is horrible and tinny, the Bongiovi effect makes it decent. Like someone else pointed out, the Bongiovi effect is like a simple bass-boost. SD support: Absolutely abysmal. Will it read an SD card of 2 GB or 4 GB? Yes, well sometimes. Will it play MP3's whose name is greater than 8.3 chars - yes, well sometimes? Will it play music in folders greater than 64 characters long and 2 deep, again, yes, sometimes. This unit is finicky to say the least and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with encoding or bit rate, either. It will (sometimes) play (SD Card) Slayer/God Hates Us All/Slayer - God Hates Us All - Bloodline.mp3 But won't (always) play (in the root directory) Bach01.mp3 Or (same slayer file as above but named in the 8.3 format) BldLine.mp3 It sometimes understands extended ascii in names, sometimes not. The unit will also not play any Windows Playlists. I can't find anyway to scroll through the folders that it will read (which varies between different driving sessions. Station Search: poor. Sitting still in the car I can hit auto-search and one time it will find a a station and the next time it will jump from 93.7 to 105 and miss every station in between. Menu: Everything is menu driven which is aggravating! Don't even consider programming in a station preset while driving. Bottom line: maybe worth the price; the workmanship is questionable.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like to have hundreds of CDs with me at all times, but switching to USB never occurred to me until I ran into this JVC. The only real problem is that all folder and filenames are limited to 25 characters, which means you'll have to shorten them all by hand, which is inconvenient and tedious. The SD slot naming convention is restricted even more. My biggest beef is with the buttons used to move between file folders. There are four buttons used to move between tracks and folders. The up and down buttons are inexplicably non-intuitive. When the files are placed on the stick, they are alphabetically listed, top to bottom. When using the buttons on the stereo to navigate between folders, the up button is 'next' while the down button is 'previous'. This makes no sense and will cause frustration. The Bongiovi feature is much more than a loudness function. If you cannot hear the difference between normal and active modes, then you need new speakers or improved appreciation for this feature. Active, it is definitely louder, but the highs are crisper, the bass has more immediate punch, and the mids are more active and brought to the front of the mix. When this feature is off, what I listen to sounds muddied and "boomy". .and this is with stock speakers! I will be upgrading to Infinity Kappas soon, and I have no doubts I will appreciate their performance even more with this JVC.

    Ok SQ, bad ergonomics

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this deck to replace an Eclipse unit that just died after seven years. The CD section's SQ is pretty good, with a nice display. But the ergonomics are about the worst I've seen in the 18 years I've been into car audio. The CD eject button is a tiny little thing on the bottom left of the face plate. The track forward/reverse and menu buttons are tiny as well. A very nice touch is that RCA's plug into the rear of the deck instead of into a female RCA making wiring a little tidier. The Bongiovi Acoustic circuit looks to be the source of the high MSRP of this unit; but it made my system unbearable when activated(JL Audio 4 ch. amp, 6 1/2" DLS separates and co-axials). It appears to be intended for unamplified systems. The circuit would probably make OEM speakers sound great. Overall the nice display, decent SQ, front USB port and SD card capability make it a very good value at this price, but be prepared for bad ergonomics and a sound enhancement circuit that doesn't work with well with an amplified system.

Recieved this JVC KD-S100 for my birthday.Installed it in a full size Bronco which has 6 1/2" factory speakers in the doors and Pioneer 6x8" in mid panel. Some of the settings are a little confusing, but once its all set up WOW! Worth every penny. I've had a Kenwood (didn't like) then replaced it with a Pioneer which I swor by (till it burnt up) and now this JVC. Lacks a little in the bass dept. with the speakers I have (soon to be replaced) but all in all This System CRANKS!

I first noticed the deck in the flier and was surprised at the sale price. Now I understand why it was marked down so drastically. While it has some nice features it's a very disappointing unit. Initially I was very skeptical of the Bongiovi processing. However since you can load different profiles to compensate for the exaggerated highs I didn't worry about it. When I first installed the unit, I listened to a CD before running the Bongiovi CD and the deck sounded decent. When the volume was at 20 it was as robust as my last JVC head unit was at the same level. After running the Bongiovi CD all that changed. Now with the Bongiovi off I have to turn it up to 35 to hit the same volume. When you engage the Bongiovi processing it raises the volume quite a bit, but you still need to turn it up to 25 or so to hit the original volume level. Even though the revised profile takes care of the highs, the rest of the spectrum still sounds awful. Basically if you like listening to modern music on your ipod and are used to ear fatigue you'll love this head unit. What would be nice if if JVC would allow you to change the EQ yourself, or at least provide a MID adjustment. This deck will neuter all of your tracks and leave them devoid of any bite or crunch. Also the fact that JVC only allowed for FAT 16 support on the SD slot would be laughable if it wasn't so ridiculously head shakingly sad.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm rating the JVC HD-S100 four stars based on build quality, feature set, and the 5 Volt Pre-Amp Outs. I believe that the Bongiovi technology does what was intended, which is compensate for the poor quality of OEM speakers. In an installation where aftermarket equipment is already installed (such as an amp), it's a different story. It is impossible to achieve the desired Bongiovi effect with varying aftermarket equipment that is available. The unit was specifically designed to be loaded with a SPECIFIC profile for a SPECIFIC car model with OEM speakers. Those profiles are not available to the general public, so the unit ships with a "universal" profile which may sound good to you. IF it does, then it's a great deal for the price. There are also a few beta profiles available from a Bongiovi forum where it is possible to find a suitable match. Bottom line : If you are building a new system consisting of head unit, amp, and quality speakers this would NOT be a great choice. If you are trying to just upgrade your sound while utilizing your factory speakers AND you like one of the profiles THEN it's a great deal for the price. I've returned my unit and put my old Panasonic back in................

There were a few things that I was going to overlook - lack of preset buttons, lack of front aux input, max SD card capacity limited to 512 Mb. However, when I held the receiver in my hands I noticed that top and bottom of the face panel and the bezel were very bright silver color, which would not match my car's interior, so I decided to send it back. The color looks much more subtle in the main picture and the video - sort of gunmetal color, but in reality it'd be an eye sore when installed in my 2003 Camry with gray interior.

I had this reciever installed yesterday with a pair of Rockford Fosgate Prime R1653's in the front and a pair of Alpine 6x9's in the rear of my 06 Elentra. The sound is very, very good. Not a sub sound but very rich sound comimg from all 4 speakers. Radio sounds really good also. Only turned Bonjiovi volume up to 26, listened for about 15 minutes and my ears are still ringing. For the price this is a great sounding set. I had a $140 Kenwood put in my sons car yesterday I bought from Crutchfield for his birthday and although it sounded real nice I like this JVC's sound much better. His speakers are aftermarket and the same size as mine. I would say if you want really great sound buy this reciever and ad a sub. Don't expect real deep bass like a subs bass but this is the best sounding unit I ever bought and I'm 56 so I bought alot of HU's. I'd give it 5 stars if it had radio buttons on the unit itself but using the remote is easy so it's really not a problem.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was a great improvement in sound quality over my AM/FM/CD stock unit in my 2005 Mustang. Makes the factory speakers come alive, but still needs a subwoofer for deep base. I love all the inputs and outputs, which leave ample room for upgrading my sound system in the future. I make full use of the USB jack in the front panel using a two gig micro SD card in a keychain size reader-writer... smaller than a thumb drive. The USB will handle 320 kbs MP3 recordings and sounds great at that bit rate. There is really no need for a CD player with the SD card slot and USB jack! I also hooked up my Sirius radio with an FM adapter, leaving the aux input for later use. Another thing I like is the memory faceplate positioning. I programmed the faceplate to tilt slightly up when powered to give me a straight-on view as my eyes are higher than the unit in the dash. I took away one star for the hard to use menu and small buttons. If you want to make adjustments for anything other than volume you have to pull over and squint. It might become easier once I memorize the buttons and menu lingo. The $600 price tag is over inflated but typical of new car options. At the price from Crutchfield it is a welcome value in an aftermarket stereo and I love it! Could use a color change from the blue lighting, as my retro-stang uses the old style green with red. Overall: at this price this JVC is a welcome addition to my musical enjoyment using my factory speakers and I love it!

Pro: The Bongiovi circuitry does provide exceptional clarity for voice and mid-range sound in the car (an imperfect noisy environment) which is great. USB/MP3 music and AM voice are much more clear and enjoyable. Cons: The rest of the hardware technology is dated. The receiver lacks HD radio or HD add-on capability. There is no built in equalizer in case you turn off the Bongiovi option or want to shape it, simple bass/treble adjustments have minimal effect. With the Bongiovi circuit turned off the radio/amplification is basically CRUD. As previously mentioned, the buttons/switches are very small and not easily used (when found). And lastly my unit will be going back to JVC for replacement as the AM noise rejection is non-existent with all static, all the time (no, it's not the wiring or vehicle). Opinion: I'd wait until the Bongiovi circuitry is incorporated into newer updated re- designed hardware. Also, once I get my existing unit repaired/replaced, if the AM noise issue turns out to be a design issue my opinion will drastically change.

This receiver is a very cheap upgrade with awesome sound. My wife wanted a receiver with USB capability so she doesn't have to shuffle cd's around. When I read the reviews by others on this item and checked out it's features, I was pretty much sold. The USB devices and SD cards need to be formatted in a Microsoft FAT format. FAT32 and NTFS do not work. The receiver is pretty basic with no major frills, but the Bongiovi sound engine is excellent. The lower frequencies really come to life without too much distortion, for which I was very impressed. I did not experience any noticeable problems with the high frequency range of sounds as others have mentioned. I usually pickup on that right away , but noticed no abnormalities. When the Bongiovi function is turned off the receiver sound is rather poor and you definitely will need external amplifiers .

out of the box the head unit looked awesome, but once it was installed it into my girlfriends car it was a different story. the kds100 was pretty slow at just about everything... from changing sources, powering on, reading disks, and skipping tracks. it just seamed really sluggish. it had a front usb port which is nice for flash drives but it is not compatible with ipods. so you will need to buy the adapter for your ipod, and the bonjiovi was a big let down... it sure seamed like a glorified Loud button. it sounded pretty bad with it on and even worse with the bonjiovi off. so i ripped it out and shipped it back to crutchfield, and gave her my pioneer premiere, which sounded tons better than the kds100. this was my first experience with jvc and unfortunately i think it will be be my last. i'm sticking with pioneer.

My system sounds so rich and musical now and a lot louder. The quality is truly amazing and this is without using the Bongiovi button. The 5 volt front and rear rca outputs and 2 volts for sub i believe make a real difference. No hissing noise from the speakers anymore like the pionner's are known for(when using a amp for sound). FM Radio sounds alot better. I am using my 8GB thumb drive in the usb port and it works perfect. some people said it was rated only to 4gb but works fine for me. it does take about 5 seconds for it to load the usb drive when you turn your car on. It does play from where you left off. It also puts the music folders in alphabectical order which the pionner didn't. For the price i stole this from crutchfield there is no radio that will come close to this and especially for the price. 1992 Ford Ranger XLT. Stock speakers x4. I believe this JVC unit is the deal of the year. Best bang-for-the-buck! It is hard to pass up the fact that this unit plays CDs, SD cards, Jump drives, and radio.(iPod control module optional) Bongiovi acoustics really enhance the tonal qualities and character of the music. Utter CLARITY! Amazingly, I took the volume level to the max on this unit and there was no clipping, of the stock speakers. The volume is very loud for a stand alone unit. Much louder than the stock unit. (the flip side is, I'll probably have to replace the tired out stock speakers real soon, REAL SOON!) What took me by surprise about the clarity of sound that the Bongiovi sound unit produces. I opened up my driver side door, and had the rear windows popped open when I walked to my front gate. At a distance of about 80 feet I was astonished to hear the vocal and tone clarity of the music/vocals. Even my elderly mother, who was inside of the house at the time commented about how clear the music was. The volume level was only on 16 with the Bon. on. Wow. Hats off to Crutchfield for very prompt delivery perfect instructions and tools. I'm impressed that Crutchfield uses "peanuts" that dissolve in water - no more mess. Thank you! 1991 Subaru Legacy

I did a complete revamp of the system in a 1993 Subaru Legacy L. It's not a nice car to look at. It's not a nice car to drive. It's not a nice car at all. And, up until a few months ago, it wasn't even a nice car to be in, due to speakers that had cones made out of a material of not much higher quality than the box that this head unit comes in. That bad. I changed that. I purchased a pretty mismatched system for this car. JVC KD-s100 headunit, Infinity Reference speakers amped by an Alpine MRP-300, a single 15" Rockford Fosgate subwoofer in a ported box built by me from 3/4" MDF, amped by a Sony XM-1s. 4 gauge power/ground, 8 gauge speaker. This head unit is the high point of the system. The Bongiovi processing system, while maybe not worth the full 650$ that this is supposed to retail for, is NOT a gimmick. It works, it works well. For the first few weeks, I had my mp3 player hooked up through a 3.5mm headphone jack converter. Sound was muddy and soulless, as can be expected when one amplifies analog output by that much. Then I found the Bongiovi button. Suffice it to say...it blew me away. Highs stood out as if from a CD, and the bass, before boxy and flat, was brought to life. My one gripe is that the system has some almost imperceptible noise in it that wasn't there before, the source of which I have yet to find.

I ordered this unit a few weeks ago, and just got around to the install....I had originally picked a lessor JVC unit, but the wise staff told me about this, and the fact the lessor unit would cost more, by $10, to get what I wanted...got the install kit and harnesses for free with this one, and have no complaint with that.. Now, all those folks WHINING ABOUT THIS ONE... the unit is great, ten minutes of twisting wires at the bench, and in my Sierra, the actual install was less than 10 minutes, start to finish...scary. Luckily my vehical requires absolutly no tools for the install... Now the Issue about the USB stick, which had me worried, haven't plugged my MP3 player into the unit yet (was my original intent) but I popped a 4gb usb chip holder/reader into the slot, and it saw everything...just make your folders logical, and it will even read sub folders...I'll try an 8gb one tomorrow, I'm betting it will work also this unit rocks, I been buying stuff here for 20 years, and have yet to be dissapointed, now I may even upgrade speakers in my GM/Bose system to extract further the potential this affordable unit has to offer....thanks guys!!!!!!! Not sure yet about Bongiovi, (BonJovi?)but it seemed to add a presence and added depth from the original sound......my joke is how it handles Rob Zombie, and Clutch....so far so good!!!! Instead, I was happy to see Crutchfield included both for free! Also the free shipping is always great and I received the radio in 3 business days. Now, I can only compare it to previous head units I've owned and by far it's the best one. I've had a Sony, 2 Pioneers, and an Alpine. Also, the Bonjiovi button is not a joke or just a loudness button as others have stated. I'm using this head unit with factory speakers in the doors and Infinity Kappa's in the back and let me tell you, I can hear the difference and it's not just "loudness". I was surprised how clean the bass sounded, especially from the door speakers. This is also without adjusting any settings whatsoever. Now, the price was something else I truly liked. Others have said it probably wasn't worth its original high price tag and I somewhat agree, but also understand that this head unit was originally intended as an upgraded radio to a particular vehicle line from the manufacturer. Overall this is the radio I've been looking for, with everything that I need and use in a radio.

I bought the unit for my boyfriends 96 Jeep Cherokee and I'm gonna have to buy another just for my car. Just with the new head unit, it makes his Jeep sound like a music hall. Every instrument is crisp and the vocals sound like their coming right out of the artists themselves. I have been installing automotive electronic for over 5 years now and have never heard such an great unit. Not even a separate sound processor can make ones car audio sound this good. I cant wait to get this and hook up my sub to it in my car.

    2002 Mazda Miata
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was very easy, except for removal of the old radio (see my review of the DIN removal tools). I have owned this unit for about two weeks. I have not played CD's extensively. I have mostly used the SD card. With that said, I like the extended playability that the SD and USB ports add to the unit. I have used a 2GB SD card and a 8GB Flash Drive, both of which seem to work well. This unit has no file sorting capabilities so, if you want your music to play in a particular order or your audio books to play in the proper sequence, you have to store your files in the order you want them played, i.e., first stored, first played. This same rule applies to folders. One negative on the SD card is that folder names are limited to 8 characters and filenames are limited to 12 characters. USB folder/filenames are limited to 25 characters, which is much more useable. I like the use of the ID tags on the display for identifying what's playing. The main reason I replaced the factory radio in my Mazda Miata is that it did not like CD-R's and CD-R/W's. Any little bump would cause it to skip or hang up. I had no such trouble with the KDS-100's cd player. The tuner presets are a bit cumbersome to select from the face buttons. While the remote buttons make the job easier, fumbling with a remote while driving could prove to be dangerous. Overall, it's a nice radio for the price. For the "gadget freak", it offers some nice features and adjustments.

    Superb stereo...treble troubles

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Beginning with Keith, the Crutchfield advisor:.. terrific! I have discovered that the advisors don't try to sell you the most expensive item, but the item that suits your needs. That alone makes Crutchfield amazing. Not to mention that everyting is included that is necessary for installation for your specific car along with instructions (with pictures!). The JVC KDS-100 is remarkable once the CD update is installed...analyzing your system and speakers for maximum quality sound (not maximum volume). My Boston Acoustic speakers sound much more expensive now than with the factory stereo. The only problem that I notice is that the treble is very shrill...which is probably due to the factory installed tweeters. Replacing these with aftermarket ones appear to be a real nightmare. I have contacted Bongiovi after reading a gentleman's review on the Crutchfield site reagrding the same problem I am experiencing. Bongiovi sent him a VAR_3 update which has resolved this problem. Other than this one minor annoyance, this stereo is magnificent The installtion was flawless, once Mike at Crutchfield technical support told me to connect the one wire that I had missed on the wiring harness (Thanks Mike). My suggestion: listen to the advisors and buy from Crutchfield. This is how a customer sevice oriented organization should be operated.

Just awesome. The Bongiovi is like a booster but cleans up the distortion at high volumes between treble and bass. Makes stock speakers almost like aftermarket seperates. I'm impressed by this unit. I install car audio professionally and this is one of the better units i have worked with. The only thing better right now on the market... First of all, this receiver looks great! I just got this 3 days ago to replace a old pioneer, and you cant beat the price. installation was very easy, along with the downloading of the software. i have a 87 ranger standard cab with aftermarket speakers all around. and a JL 10' sub. i love the Bongiovi feature as well as the Amp gain control. compared to my other deck this is like night and day. the sound quality is amazing. it sounds like alot of the people were having bass issues with this unit and with a sub the bass is loud, and clear with no distortion at all. one of my friends has 2 Rockford 12' subs and he is really impressed i can get this amount of power and sound out of just a 10. overall this is amazing. i would highly recomend this if you are on a budget and looking for a great sounding stereo. crutchfield again was great with the shipping, and made everything so easy to do.

This seems like a nice unit, but after installing it in my pristine '93 Lincoln Town Car with premium factory JBL amps/speakers, using the Crutchfield-supplied connectors (they fit perfectly, thank you Crutchfield), the subwoofer cut out when all four speaker connections were made (using the pre-amp out into the JBL amps). I returned the first unit, and the second unit did the exact same thing. Returned that one, too. Crutchfield spent hours on the phone trying to work through this with me, they were great. Didn't cost me a cent. I finally tried a Kenwood unit, using the same Crutchfield connectors, and it worked perfectly. Something about the JVC unit and the JBL amp configuration that is incompatible. It was a pain working through all this, but thank you Crutchfield for your customer service. I'll be back!

got this unit a few months back to replace an Alpine that had the backlight on the head unit burned out (2nd time Alpine you're 2 for 2 :( Quick delivery, clear install in my toyota truck. Some pros: Price (althought the monster discound kinda makes me laugh now. If you payed full price, you'd return it ASAP IMHO). The sound expansion is awesome in my extended cab, bass could use a little more umph, but I don't listen to anything that needs to shake the windows (would be nice at drive in!!!) I love the USB option (4 gig max only 16G didn't work), CD has worked fine (doesn't get used much) and the display is awesome. Clear, legible, multiple lines. Like the remote more than I wanna admit. Some Cons: Small buttons. Tiny. Micro. with mini tiny micro lettering. Uhhhh, Pause feature???? anyone? ... and then it starts you back at beginning of the media file! aargh! Summary: Nice unit at discounted price, plenty of features/inputs. Probably not for an Audiophile or mega picky listener. You know who you are, spend more money! ;)

For the price, this deck is a good deal for the features. However the BonGiovi is just a loud button basically. It is true what some of the other reviewers say that the highs are very loud in comparison to the bass. I have aftermarket speakers upfront (6/12) and stock in the rears (6x9). The sound is better from the rears and marginal improvement from the aftermarkets speakers. The controls are not that hard to pick up on, was easy to learn after a few minutes of playing around with it. The faceplate looks good and is probably one of the better points of this cd receiver. I havn't tried using USB or the SD card yet, will get around to it. Since I already have this deck installed, I don't feel like taking it out and buying another. It's good enough for me to keep it, instead of returning it. I would advise potential buyers to spend a few more dollars and get a deck that sounds better, unless you want loud highs and not that much bass. If you have a 2000-2001 Camry, keep the stock speakers with this deck will probably sound better together.

I installed this in my 97 Previa Van, along with fairly cheap but decent Boston Acoustics door speakers. The sound in Bongiovi mode is great. I think this was a wildly overpriced unit at MSRP, but at Crutchfield's price, it is a great deal. The SD and USB slots are very handy. Sound quality is great on all inputs, tuner is very sensitive, picking up stations 100 miles away. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the controls are a bit complex, and not intuitive. You will need to consult the manual. Overall, this is a great buy. The optional Ipod adapter won't work with Iphone, but I hooked mine up via rear rca connectors. You will need a separate charger for the phone, but those are cheap. I find myself on long trips transferring music from my Phone to an SD card.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been incredibly happy with the performance of the JVC KD-S100. Unbelievable price and unbelievable sound. The USB and SD card slots are very convenient. I don't even keep ant CDs in my car, because, with a 4 GB flash drive and a 1 GB SD card, I don't need them. The USB slot can play the FAT32 format and the SD slot reads up to the FAT16 format, and this head unit plays both sources with only about 4 or 5 seconds loading time and no loading time between songs, even set on random mode. The Bongiovi Acoustics program truly does allow for higher volume without distortion whether you have factory speakers or aftermarket replacements, running at low power or high power. It has 3 preamp outputs - subs, front and rear - for high power component applications. I currently have two 12" subs and thought I had already heard them in every possible way but the KD-S100 has blown me away. It has not only the standard adjustable sub volume control but it also has built-in crossover/slope settings, allowing you to fully customize the sound for different types of music. I highly recommend this head unit for anyone. Period. The low price just seals the already sweet deal.

i ordered this head unit to replace my factory stereo. On paper it looked awesome. crutchfield was amazing as usual, fast shipping, GREAT service and clear precise instructions. the head unit is great for people who have never had an aftermarket stereo in their lives and are just looking for an upgrade. its a bit slow to start up and a bit slow to read the cd's. and with the bongiovi on, it sounds quite peaky, meaning too much treble. i had the treble all the way down and still it hurt my ears and my wifes ears. also u need an additional cable to play from your ipod. anyways i did what i shouldve done in the 1st place, called up crutchfield and told them i wanted to do an exchange and they obliged. i yanked this unit out and sent it back for a Pioneer Head unit. the whole exchange took less than 3 days and the new head unit is now in its place. last word : good head unit for the price, just not for the people who have experienced aftermarket stereos.

Drive an 06 Sonata, factory stereo was getting tired. This unit made a huge difference in sound clarity and imaging, just like Ken Nail said it would in the video. This would be a great unit for a leased car as well, as the factory speakers play louder, clearer, and with no obvious distortion. My factory radio would cause the rear speakers to buzz at anything but very low volumes. Listen mainly to jazz recordings made in the 40s thru 60s on MP3 CD-RW, and this unit makes the music sound nearly as good as it does on my home stereo, which plays through my high-end speakers. Also, once you run the Bongiovi setup disc, there are no other settings to fiddle with, just adjust the bass and treble to your liking. Simple. Thanks, Crutchfield.

The Good: USB, SD, CD, Aux, Line-in. Channel separation, music highs are much improved from stock. A noticeable difference in sound quality (highs that is). The Bad: USB storage cannot handle more files than other brands' USB implementation. SD too is much worse in storage than USB. The Worse: Bass is relatively weak. There are no equalizers or loudness buttons. At the original price it was obscene. At this price, it leaves a lot to be desired of. The boast of the Bongiovi was that it had a virtual subwoofer. For crying out loud, I can't even tell if there's a small hint of a bass. If they tweaked the bass to be more beefy, say 3x, this would be a killer system. But heck no, I give it 3 stars. I replaced this unit immediately with a Pioneer.

This JVC HU completely blows away the Pioneer. I've had this unit for about a month now and am happy with it. The USB and SD drives are pretty sensitive - if you are having issues with size or it not remembering it's spot when you restart your car, try a different brand for your SD card or flash drive. As an example, the unit remembers it's location every time when I use one 2GB Flash Drive but always starts from Folder 1 / Track 1 when I use a different brand 2GB Flash Drive. The SD card is also a little picky. I am using a 2GB SD card but the radio recognizes only half of the tracks, about 1GB worth. Weird. And the sound is not as good from the SD card for some reason when compared to the CD player (mp3 files on CD-Rom) or even from the USB drive. In summary: The unit is sensitive to quality. If you have issues then use a different brand. The 512 MB limit on the SD card doesn't exist - those people need to try different brand media. Same for the person who said that the unit doesn't remember it's spot on a track when you restart the car - it does. Use a different brand of media. You can fast forward as much as you want in a track, if it doesn't for you then use a different brand of media. And the display options and sound are excellent. I'm giving this a 5-star based on the quality vs. price. For the price this is an excellent radio. And don't forget the 3 year parts and labor warranty.

First of all the pics that Crutchfield has of the JVC KD-s100 don't do it justice! This is a great looking player and when you hook it up it just looks expensive! Any way I love the features and the "Jovi" button works great. The setup Cd that came with it made my infinity kappa tweets sound a little harsh, but reading another review there are additional setups you can download from the Bonjolvi(howerver you spell it) web site! I am using the one optimized for after market speakers. There are about 5 or 6 setups you can download and they are in .zip format. It toned down the highs a bit and cleaned up the midrange! I like is so much I am ditching my Audiocontrol Four.1 Eq! Radio sounds loud and clear and I like the usb port for my thumb drive! As far a the SD Card slot I doubt I'll ever use it so who cares if it only goes to 512mb! Alot of the reviews seem to be about factory speakers so If you have a high end stereo you will not be dissappointed! I have old school PPI amps and a 15" Kicker L7 sub in a tuned ported box and it will make your hair crawl off your head! So buy this one and thx Crutchfield for giving $$$ off! The sound is crisp and clear even through the stock Infinity speakers in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The bongiovi option, when activated, is awesome. Too bad you cannot utilize bongiovi for the radio. The only thing is the stock speakers hit harder on the bass notes with the stock head unit but I do not regret buying this unit. I think after buying a box and amp my stereo system will be complete. Just purchased a 2GB SD card, loaded it with songs on Saturday and to tell you the truth I have not listened to the radio since then and don't miss it. I have recommended the JVC receiver to a few people at work and one has already ordered it and the other is going to order it in the next week. For those who are focused on playing music from the sd card will be a bit disappointed that the limit is 512 mb. However, I purchased this unit for the DPS by Tony Bongovi. After landing on JVC's website and watching the video of this unit in action, I decided to install it in my car. The sound is really good. I have six 5.25 inch speakers in my Volvo and the sound is really crisp and clean to that of studio quality. The highs are a bit harsh, but can be adjusted to soften them up. For the price, it will be hard to beat this deal for both value and quality of the equipment. Only reason I didn't give this 5 stars because it didn't have an HD radio tuner built in.

The JVC KD-S100 is AWESOME. This price and features can't be beat. Any flaws can be worked out. iphone through the AUX in comes to mind. My setup sounds unbelievable. Boston Acoustics' in the front, Pioneer's in the back, Orion Cobalt in the trunk and a Kicker 5 ch to provide the power. The DSP provides a crisp clarity that will make old songs sound like your hearing them for the first time. The free install kit for the Magnum was ok but the trim piece interferes with the radio's flip down feature. I had to use a piece of carbon fiber instead. I'm very satisfied with the radio and Crutchfield.

    An Almost perfect system

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The JVC KD-S100 system is an almost perfect stereo. The only improvement I would suggest is the ability to pause/play any song on any of the media inputs. Currently you have to turn the system off to pause or you can change the source to one that isn't being used. The system remembers its place on the song when you return to the source you are using to play music. Bongiovi acoustics is also working hard to deliver more profiles with which you can program your KD-S100 to your specific taste. More bass/Less bass, More mids/Less mids, and softer highs. A very easy to use interface plus fast and simple programming using the various profile tweaks you can get directly from Bongiovi's site. Don't listen to the negative reviews concerning sound quality on this stereo. Once you have used the proper profile for your taste in sound, you will be amazed at the quality, the clarity, and the overall richness of the sound this system produces using just stock speakers that came in your vehicle. Nuff said. Buy this unit. Thanks Crutchfield, JVC, and especially The gang at Bongiovi Acoustics.

The JVC KD-S100 is a great head unit right out of the box. It sounds great and looks awesome at night with the graphic display on. The sound from the unit is of good quality with only the highs being just a little harsh. The bongiovi dps is amazing in the way it changes the sound of the music. It is really more than just a loud button as some have stated here in other reviews. The bongiovi dps button changes the EQ and boost the volume both along with greatly improving the clarity of the music or media being played. The sound of FM stations and satellite radio are almost comparable to that of cds with the bongiovi feature turned on. However, I can not wait till the Bongiovi Acoustics crew releases new profiles on their website. If you go on their forums you can see where they have been working on variations of the universal profile. If you purchased this unit and thought the sound was just a little off I encourage you to go to the Bongiovi Acoustics website and try other DPS profiles (once available) before you return your unit to Crutchfield.

I installed this in a Porsche 944 to replace the dead factory unit. I really like it. These cars have pretty small speakers and this gets the bost out of it. As always, Crutchfield was spot on with the order and the correct cables. BIG Thumbs up to the Guys at Bongiovi Acoustics. I emailed them about a custom profile and they got right back with me, seems they are beta testing several semi-custom profiles to get more out of this unit. The 'Small Car' profile did the trick in my car and really improved the bass and made the highs less harsh. Talk about your customer service, these guys just love what they do and thats outstanding

I highly recommend this receiver, especially since the price has dropped even more. I bought this receive when it was $200, and have been very satisfied with it. Like others have said, the SD card, and usb flash drive navigation isn't the best, but it is still good. I really like the Bongiovi sound-rendering; the radio sounds great. It is powering my 2 Infinity 5 1/4" speakers in front (also from Crutchfield), 2 Boss Audio 6 1/2" speakers in back, and one 12" 200w dual voice-coil subwoofer in my trunk, without an amp. I will be getting an amp, crossover, capacitor, etc. soon, but until then, it still sounds great. I like the remote that comes with it, as well. However, you have to hold it kind of close in front of the reciever for it to work. It may just be the battery; I have not checked. Overall, this is a really great stero, especially for the price.

I was contemplating going the way of the custom stereo shop for my new Dodge Ram's upgrade to the factory unit. My buddy bought one of these units a week prior to me getting mine. All I can say is that it only took me hearing the quality of this unit one time for about 5 minutes for me to change my mind about the possibilities of me doing the install myself. Not only did I save a bundle the install was easy and the unit's quality is second to few. My factory speakers (not yet upgraded) sound 100X better. I recommend this unit to anyone that wants an awesome head unit for cheap! This thing is so crystal clear. One note to functionality - the new iPhone will work with this unit, but not through its USB input. You must use the 1/8 to Stereo RCA jack (not included). I prewired this in the install and am using it without any issues and great sound. I cant wait to get the AMP and speakers to finish my upgrade.

Well after having this head unit for a month I can honestly say that it is ok. The Bongiovi button is merely a hyped up loud button much like Alpine's Media Xpander which I have in another vehicle. All it does is is make the music sound artificially bad when you first turn it on, but hit the B button and presto it sounds natural. Don't get me wrong, it sounds good but worth the price it's at now. Certainly not a 650$ head unit (and I have owned a few in that range). I wish it would push my mids better but the highs are clean and have a lot of sparkle. All in all a decent unit but in my book disapointing for what they are claiming it is worth.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit with high expectations, only to be let down. The first major dissapointment was the SD card only being able to handle 512mb. I was able to live with that seeing as though I could use a USB stick instead. This brings me to the second major dissapointment: MP3 navigation. It seems that this unit does not scroll through folders as I thought it should. If you place your folders 2 deep (Artist, Album) then you might as well forget about finding a album by artist, as it only shows the lowest level of folder with music in it. I find this tremendously annoying only because I had within the last 6 month put a sony in my old car which did the search much more intuitively, I regret now now buying the same unit for my new car. Add to all of this the sound quality is not near that of the Sony, and it leads to a $$$$ mistake. I only wish I would have tried to return it withing the 30 day period.

At the price Crutchfield is offering this unit for, it's probably the best bang-for-buck receiver purchase out there. The Bongiovi processor makes a noteworthy difference in clarity and sound quality, especially when you use its SEL menu to turn up the volume adjustment. I am not even running my two front door Clarion 5 1/4" speakers with an amp, but they come through plenty loud and clear thanks to the Bongiovi's high-quality 5 volt preamps, which are way higher power than most on the market. The optional iPod control cord is great for two reasons: it charges your iPod and also displays all song and album info on the unit's brilliantly lit screen. The only reason I don't give four stars is the iPod is a bit difficult to control through the unit itself, which is why I've just gotten in the habit on choosing a playlist on my iPod and letting it play through in shuffle mode. The ability to choose between 4 different faceplate angles also sets this unit apart in terms of style. At Crutchfield's drastically low price, this unit is an amazing value!

I purchased this based on the price (like everyone else). It's a very nice HU, and has lots of features for the price. I would never pay close to MSRP for this. It may be worth about double the current price (comparing to others). Install was a snap -- although there's no install guide with the receiver (makes sense since this was originally going to be an OEM upgrade from dealers). There's lots of things going on behind the deck, to you'll need lots of room. The sound is good. However, the highs do seem somewhat harsh -- especially when hooked to Infinity Kappas (like me). I do plan on adding amps/sub soon. The display is nice. Control layout is OK -- but not too intuitive. I do miss number presets (1-6) on the actual faceplate. Using the remote helps. Expandability is excellent with 3 pre-outs, RCA in, front USB , front SD card , remote plug (rear). Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase. I received excellent value per dollar. Crutchfield is second to none when it comes to purchasing, support, customer sat.

Somewhat dissapointing. Although the sound quality is very good (I really like the Bongiovi DSP), the thing I most looked forward to was the SD card input. I envisioned loading it up with all my music, and just forgetting about it. Well, that won't work. A small detail not mentioned anywhere outside the spec sheet of the owners manual, is that it only supports a 512 MB max. You can fit more music than that on a CD, making the SD card pretty much useless. The unit I got was flakey. If I disconnected the battery, it would work for a while, but then it would quit. A power supply probelm maybe? This took quite a bit of time and effort to track down. I've since returned it and am listening to my junky old factory radio until my new one comes in. Of course, Crutchfield has excellent customer service, and I had no problem returning it.

I am now looking into returning mine. The good: It has front USB, rear AUX, a motorized face, and a low price. The bad: Unfortunately the unit sounds no better than any other low to mid range piece of equipment (even with the DSP on), the blue display is blinding at night when mounted high on the dash, the silver color does not match any car interior, the interface is frustrating, and the USB connectivity is very limited in its file system compatability.

Got this JVC for my girlfriends 2000 VW Beetle. The Crutfield site sadi this would fit into the allotted space. I must say Crutfield has the BEST installation gear out there, but this thing would not fit into the receiver space. I finally jammed it into the space and everything worked and sounded great. Then I turned the car off and then back on and NO SOUND. So I took out the receiver and checked all the connections again and got sound. Turn the car off and back on NO SOUND again. Frustrated I unplugged the unit and went to bed to restart in the morning. Got up, and went to turn on the car, and the car was completely dead. This unit drained the BRAND NEW battery. Got a new Battery and tried hook up again. Everything sounded great and when I jammed the system into place still worked. Turn off car and back on, NO SOUND again. After this, I got a $90 Sony receiver and used Crutfield's wonderful installation pieces and have been HAPPY EVER SINCE. So I basically paid to get Crutfield's installation equipment and this JVC unit sits on my work bench since Crutfield won't take it back.

The aftermarket Sony in my wife's vehicle died and we expect to get a new car in the next year or so -- so I didn't want to spend a lot on a new stereo, but not having children's music and NPR just isn't an option! It sounds great. I've had car systems worth thousands in the past, and definitely don't agree with the other reviewers who suggest this JVC sounds like you have a sub. BUT - the sound is very good for the price. I give it 5 stars for what it is. The Bongiovi feature is neat - a bit like a loudness button, but better. The specs say it will take a USB drive less than 4GB in size -- well, that kinda sounds like it means 2GB since that is the next size down. But not to worry! A 4GB USB flash drive works fine. The installation instructions from Crutchfield were good. I had tinkered, but not done a head unit install before. It was straightforward. I probably spent 20 minutes soldering and another 45 minutes to do the whole install. You can crimp the connections, but I like to be certain they won't come apart or otherwise get loose. For me, I used a soldering iron, regular sized philips head screwdriver, and short stubby philips head screwdriver. And a bit of electrical tape around the soldered connections. I had to call Crutchfield to check on the wiring because I didn't find a diagram in the instruction manual. Later I found a diagram on a sticker on the actual radio, though by then Crutchfield tech support had already answered my questions.

I purchased this unit at a great sale price. I wondered why it was so low, figured it was a closeout item. Crutchfield was fast and friendly as always... I also purchased Pioneer 5.25" front speakers and 6X8" behind seat speakers for my 1994 Ford F150 Lightning pick-up. Install was easy. I loaded the supplied tuning disc and received an error. I reset per instructions and cd would not do anything but show a default mode of some type on the receiver display. It sounds ok for the sale price but not close to being worth $620.00. The instructions are adequate at best. I have read throught the instruction manual 4 full times and I am still unable to use some of the display functions. Either the receiver is messed up or the instructions are incorrect. It does have decent sound quality. Only has a bass and treble setting, no mid-range. Not much bass to be heard after being installed a few weeks. I have contacted a Crutchfield Advisor by e-mail and awaiting their response. I need some sort of bass from the unit or I may need to send it back. I am not expecting a $2000.00 system but it would be nice to have some decent response from this head unit. I currently have the bass set at 6+ and treble set between 0 and 2+ depending on the song. I mainly listen to classic 70's and Hair Band rock from the 80's and early 90's. You may think twice before purchasing. It does sound much better than the old Alpine unit with 15 year old factory speakers.

I go this to replace my Bose system in my Nissan Maxima. I was a snap to install (again! due to the literature always included when I buy from Crutchfield) I actually had a slight problem this time due to the Bose changeover to a standard system. Call the support desk and in 1 minute, I was given the help I needed and it worked perfectly. I love the different inputs. Besides the CD, SD and USB, I added a 1/8" plug into the Aux leads behind it and ran the connection out front, so now I can play any MP3/iPod a friend has with no hassles too. The sound rocks. The buttons and menu took a little effort to learn, but once they're put to use a few times, it becomes very simple to move around to what is needed/wanted from them. At this price, it's a winner for sure!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a bad for the price. But, don't be fooled by the Bg ads; it does nothing to adapt to your system. Bg is designed to have custom calibrations loaded into the radio by dealers as an upgrade for cars which have specifically been evaluated by the Bg people. For us CF customers, we get the "generic" cal CD:a profile designed to work reasonably well on a generic system. The Bg is reduced to being a generic DSP system, no more. Generally, this radio doesn't sound as good as my JVC or Dual for comprable $. Sometimes the Bg system makes songs sound much better. VH's Jump, or Styx's Come Sail Away really sound dynamic and good. But Limp Biskit's Take A Look Around is worse and thinner than my old factory stereo. Speach can be so crisp to be hard to listen to. The radio performs badly when the Bg feature is off. The dot matrix VFD display on the radio is beautiful. The song/album/clock/icon layout is very well done, and the display is readable day or night. Dimming didn't work in my 2k Mustang The UI is poorly thought out, and a bit buggy. There's no pause for CD/USB/SD. This is a big problem for me; I do lots of foreign language lessons. It only has 10 buttons, but in many modes, like SD, some do nothing. Why not implement a pause using the BAND key? Why does random turn off when I press Up or Down? Why does the radio not respond to the first button push after key-on? I could play at least some songs from my 2gSD or 16GUSB. Didn't test this a lot.

This is a nice headunit in most ways. Its very cool looking, and its quite easy to use. I really like the front mounted USB input, its very convenient. It reads CD-Text. The internal amp does seem strong, but the rub is the Bongiovi feature. If you turn it off, the gain with the internal amp is too low. I think this is done to give the DSP more 'wow' factor in the showroom. If you look up 'Bongiovi' with a search engine, you can see the demo for the dealer installed version of this radio. You'll see what I mean. I'm not crazy about the Bongiovi DSP. I think it makes the treble too bright. It makes a lot of program material very fatiguing to listen to. It may well sound decent with really cheap stock speakers, the ones with no tweeters. I'll be using this head with a component amp, and will be disabling the Bongiovi feature. I will turn up the gain to compensate. Fortunately, it has three sets of preamp outputs. As always, the support from Crutchfield is top notch.

The build quality seems very good compared to other units, especially the new pioneers with their flimsy buttons. The motorized faceplate is trick with different angles and smooth operation. The display is fantastic!! It provides a ton of information yet is very easy to read. Scrolling is quick and you can still read it in direct sunlight! And it is dim enough at night not to be distracting. However, the sound quality is sub-par, especially for all the bongiovi hype. It does appear to be just a loud function. Top 40 songs sound the best, but rock (like Soundgarden "Spoonman" and Foghat "I just want to make love to you") sound really bad. There is very little mid and the lower end is muddy. This JVC may sound good hooked to just factory speakers, but not hooked to my Alpine Type-S components in front and rear with 2 JL 10w1v2 subs in a sealed box powered by a JL 250/1v2 amp.. The pioneer I replaced with this had much better quality. Never got around to trying the USB, SD, or iPod so I can't comment on those functions.

I am running aftermarket components in the front and stock speakers in the the rear of my GMC. The Bongiovi setting makes my semi stock system sound great. I am going to connect my subs to it soon, and then I'll know how well it will perform. I was disappointed that a stereo carrying a price tag of $649 is not capable of merely connecting a satellite radio antenna to it. The stereo restarts the first song on a USB flash drive every time you turn the vehicle of, this is some what annoying. In all its a great stereo for the money. The mounting kit made it very easy to install. Once I soldered the wiring harness together it took ten minutes to pull the stock one out and install the new one. Has a very clean look!

Crutchfield's service is excellent. The unit took 3 days to arrive and had everything I needed when it got here. So in about 30 minutes I had it up and running. The display is very nice and the graphics are clean and legible. JVC makes quality products, and this one has a 3 year warranty. That is good. Sound however is what is most important with car audio equipment... Now onto the sound. The bass and treble adjustments seem to do very little. The unit sounds like trash with the Bongiovi button off. When the Bongiovi is on, the bass and treble are adjusted higher and there is noticeable "processing" to the sound. Seems to be the same as a "loudness" button, but a little more overbearing. I ran the update CD that came with the unit and all in all I was not impressed. Thankfully, Crutchfield has a great return policy. The unit was in my Jeep for about 3 hours, and I said that is it. My factory radio sounded better. Bottom line: if you need a cheap cd player, this is a great deal. If you are expecting this to be an amazing unit (worth an MSRP of $649), you might be disappointed. If there was more adjustment I probably could have lived with it. Midrange was massively overpowering when trying to listen at louder volumes... for me anyway.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this stereo in a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Previous to this unit I had a cd receiver from Eclipse with two alpine amplifiers (sub-woofer & voices). Front speakers were from Polk audio and the rear speakers from Infinity. I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed. The Bongiovi Acoustics is simply amazing, the voices are very clear as you were personally in a concert. The stereo separation was also improved through the car. The signal to noise radio is excellence and my Iphone is being connected using the FM trasmiter from Belkin. The sound quality is notable if I compare with my previous unit. The FM interference is almost nothing. It is really an excellence unit for the price you pay. Also, my ipod is being connected using the auxiliary connection with RCA plugs and is also amazing. I would highly recommend this product to everyone. I want to to say thank you to the Crutchfield personnel since the unit was received very quick.

IMO, this receiver is best or more suitable if you are trying to replace the factory receiver and using the JVC's built-in amps. This wasn't the case for me as I have aftermarket speakers and a 5-channel amplifier in my car and bought this JVC to replace my old Kenwood Excelon. After it was installed, proper gains on the amp are set, Universal Tuning Disc installed, then I turned-on the Bongiovi feature, and I was like, "is that it?!?". Don't get me wrong, the sound did change, but it was simply just like pressing the "LOUD" button on my old receiver. For future buyers, see if you can get a tuning disc from JVC specially tailored for your car. I think the Universal Tuning disc is too "universal" that probably covered the whole spectrum of cars, from Smart car, to a van, and to a full size SUV. I don't know, I'm just guessing.

Well, i got this receiver and am very pleased with the price, other receivers at a comparable price range may have more features, however i was intrigued by the dsp this receiver touts, and i have always been satisfied with jvc. I had another jvc so installation was as easy as unplugging the old and plugging in the new. I was very satisfied with the overall sound however i did not hear a virtual subwoofer after activating the bongiovi thing, but i did notice an improvement in sound quality. I currently have two amplifiers in my system (one for my speakers, the other for the sub) and i did enjoy the subwoofer control as it lets you choose the frequency cutoff and slope (whatever that is). Good price, dont expect much from the dsp, although it does work.

I installed this product 3 days ago and gave it a real chance to deliver on what it promises. I don't want to install an amp and subwoofer in my current vehicle and just wanted an overall boost in headroom. Pros- It sounds very clear and crisp and delivers great stereo imaging and sound stage. Cons - The Highs and midrange are expanded to the point that you loose low frequency response, especially at low levels. Conclusion - If you are replacing an underperforming factory stereo with stock speakers, you will get a great boost from this product. If you are replacing one after market receiver (In my case, another Kenwood) with after market speakers already installed (in my case Polk Db), you will not get the type of improvement that is promised. I am returning it and opting for an Alpine receiver with the KTX-445 Power Pack.

Ok I have now installed 2 of these. One in a 2001 Miata with Bose System (needed an adapter) One in a 2004 Mini Cooper (Hard install) Both sound good... The Mini sounds great. The Bose speakers in the Miata are kinda weak. Now to the SD and USB Questions SD 2GB works but it would error out sometimes. May need to reformat it. It was one from a previous MP3 Player. 4GB non SDHC SD car does NOT work 255 Song limit does not appear to be right. It showed me 366 song on the card. We shall see what happens USB I tried a 16gb Flash drive and it failed to load. I tried a 8gb Micro SDHC in a USB adapter and it works great!!! Other things It does not like Folders inside folders IT starts over at the first song when you restart the car. (Confirmed on USB drive only) We need a firmware upgrade for this. These should all be fixable thru flashing. (except for the SD card beyond 4gb) I really like the player though... Just hope that JVC supports us and comes up with a firmware since they are selling them to the public. Well worth the price. JVC PLEASE MAKE A FIRMWARE AVAILABLE

Having been a loyal pioneer buyer for longer than I can remember, this was a leap for me to go with JVC. I have probably bought/owned 12 pioneer in-dash units over the years, and 6 home recievers. That being said, I am really glad that I did! The sound quality from this unit is simply fantastic. I installed this into a jeep grand cherokee with the infinity speaker/amp system and it really bought it to life over the factory deck. (which I was fairly happy with, just wanted removable media features) I was a little put off with the limits that other folks mention as far as removable media, but I can only assume they read what was in the back of the manual? (which was printed in 2006) I am currently using an 8gb USB drive which works perfectly, along with a 2gb SD card! (I have not tried out a bigger SD card or usb stick yet) The one thing that I did notice is that you have to remove the faceplate to access the SD card slot, but it's not a big deal. The controls are really well thought out on this unit, the main dial has a rubber surround on it which makes it way easier to use than the pioneer that is similar (but all plastic) in my other car. I also really like the ATT feature being a single quick push on the main dial. The three sets of preouts are a great feature, along with the standard RCA inputs that I attached my sirius sportster4 to. All things considered, this is a fantastic unit for a great price that packs a ton of features!

I bought this unit from Crutchfield last week and for the price, I don't think you can get better sound from any comparable receiver. Despite what some say, the virtual subwoofer DOES make a difference. You're not going to get huge booming bass, but the bass in my Escape is definitely noticeable now. It has a nice, loud kick. I have had a lot of expensive receivers in my time, and none compare to this for sound quality. It's so clean and crisp, and nothing is muddy or drowned out. And ZERO distortion. The default Bongiovi setup disc sounds great, and when I loaded the profile for my Escape, it sounded even better! The display is clear and bright, not too fancy but that's the way I like it. I like information, not pretty graphics. I have successfully used an 8GB SD card as well as multiple 2GB cards, so the 512MB limit for the SD slot is not true. Also, the USB slot works with my 8GB drive as well. Ipod functionality is great, the only gripe I have is no pause button (other than iPod mode).

The JVC Failed Badly, the screen was not even comparable to the CD5000 had a better sound quality, it had better Display had Better Color (Illumination) and Looks much better in every expect. This JVC unit is priced right. I wouldn't have paid $600 for this unit. The JVC Unit is Cheap for a reason. One thing I liked was the 3 year warranty with this JVC Unit. Thats about it. I am going to return mine because I am not to happy with its performance. The BoV is just a loud feature with tweaked settings which you cannot change because the JVC does not have this feature.

I recently purchased this JVC headunit. It is my third or fourth unit, and the least expensive so far. The sound quality of this unit, with the processing on, is absolutely fantastic. It beats my last $400 (internet price) Pioneer in clarity and performance; but does not offer the level of adjustments that a more expensive unit would have. Both of my parents (I'm 24, they are 65-ish) commented on the difference between the Bongiovi setting on and off. The difference "may" be achievable with standard EQ settings (as some people claim) but it seems to almost 'restore' my low quality bootleg recordings of live shows. The live shows take on an almost 'studio' quality, that is immediately identifiable by everyone who has heard it. The downside to this unit is a lack of adjustable functions such as EQ, time delay, etc etc etc. On the bright side, the subwoofer options (crossover and db slope) are useful and there DOES seem to be some type of high pass crossover (as mentioned in some press releases about the Bongiovi stuff) features built into the processing, but they are not adjustable. I have CDT CL-60 component speakers for front stage and they are not audibly distorted or getting too much bass from the headunit, although I DO have my amplifier's high pass turned on for extra protection (seems to be exactly the same without it, though)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking forward to this piece coming, as our factory CD player was not working. The install (thanks to Crutchfield!!) was a no-brainer; much easier than when I had to extract thread-locked screws out of my Inifiniti I30 Bose unit! It was about a 1-1.5 hour install. Fairly standard for us DIY-ers. Anyhoo, once installed, we had it in for a few days before we noticed that when scanning through files on the USB drive (all spoken word, all 40 minutes plus), it would scan for ~3minutes--too slowly--then skip to the next track. Very annoying, and not acceptable, as we listen to a lot of spoken word. The Bongiovi thing is a gimmick. It just seems like a loudness control, boosting the bass and treble. Maybe there's more to it, but the volume level is weak to begin with; the Bongiovi button, besides being a bass/treble boost, also gives about 10dB more output, I'm guessing, meaning, the unit is well-nigh unusable on the freeway without the Bongiovi function engaged. There's no reason to have a button for this other than the "wow" factor. No EQ to adjust for different types of program mat'l. Again, we're big on spoken word; a mid boost would be great. To reiterate, overall, it's not loud enough, even with the Richie Sambora, er, I mean, Bongiovi function engaged (I know-- it's Tony Bongiovi, not John Bon Jovi). Had to send it back. It might work for your needs, and a lot of folks seem pleased with theirs. It's also at a really good price right now....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading about the Bongiovi Acoustics and DPS being something new to the audio processing scene, I decided to give this head unit a try. What caught my eye was the clean display and USB port on the front of the unit. From what I had read, people had only good things to say about the radio and it's new DPS technology, and at the price Crutchfield was selling the unit for, I couldn't pass it up. I had already installed a pair of RSD 6.5 components up front and RE 6x9 speakers in the rear (All factory locations), powered by a Pioneer DEH-3900MP. The 3900 was boring to me. After installing the KD-S100, I popped in the Bongiovi update CD (included with the radio), and then had a test listen. My first impression was, "wow, this is horrible". So I tried a few different types of music and sources, and it seems that techno does best on this unit. Everything else is muddy... and you can't adjust the EQ at all. As far as other functions, the USB function sucks, because it always starts at the first file on the drive (instead of resuming like a cd), skipping tracks takes an unacceptably long time (this goes for cds as well), and overall I'm very disappointed in this radio. What I would like to see changed: -Speed up the loading processes (skipping tracks, folders, initial startup) -At least a little bit of EQ adjustment (Rather than just Bass & Treble) -Buttons that don't feel so cheap. They feel like I'm going to break them.

I hadn't actually decided to buy a new car stereo, until I saw a $650 stereo on clearance. The sound quality, with cheap front speakers and 20 year old speakers in the rear, is simply amazing. The screen is nice and bright and easy to read, info scrolling is good, read time for a 1G USB is <10sec, FM seek is very quick, and it's quick to change sources (annoyances I have had with past stereos). I was a little leery of controlling through just the knob and a few buttons (no presets), but I've been playing with it for a day and it's pretty simple. Note: doesn't accept JVC Bluetooth or HD radio accessories, kind of a bummer, but if you aren't worried about those then this is a winner.

Just installed this head unit in my 05' VW Passat with the Monsoon system. Fairly easy install with the help of Pacific Accessories Company tech. support. Note to all who install this in a VW using the PAC C2R VW interface, blue-white interface wire needs to be attached to the continuous yellow 12volt lead for the head unit to shut off when the vehicle is turned off (blue-white is NOT an amplifier lead). Additionally, there is almost no room for the addition of the PAC steering wheel adapters; I decided not to even bother because only Hodini could get them in the dash with all the wiring. As for the abilities of the head unit. It truly brings the Monsoon system to life unlike the OEM head unit ever could. The unit has clean lines, great integration with the dash, and is fairly easy to use. Having never owned a JVC head unit (only Pioneer), I am impressed. One major down side is the small buttons for unit operation. But, with a single din this is to be expected. For the discounted price at which Crutchfield is selling this unit, you are practically stealing it. I would definitely recommend this head unit if you are tired of the lackluster VW Monsoon head unit. As for Crutchfield, their service is unmatched.

After installing this unit with the speakers that came with it when I bought it, I am pleased with the results. The only troubles I ran into was that there was no wiring diagrams with this unit so I was lucky that all of the wire colors matched up. There was also a wire that popped out of the crutchfield wiring harness that prevented one of the speakers from working. I also found that the iPod adapter doesn't work with all iPods but connecting a RCA to headphone cable into the external input worked just fine for me although the volume is a little lower than that of the other sources. The menu takes a little time to get used to but it's not too bad. Upgrading to a new head unit with a USB input and getting 4 speakers for this price was well worth it. It sounds great!
