Our take on the JVC KD-X310BT

by Jon Paulette
JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

All the best in digital music

Tired off digging around in your car to find the scratchy old CD you dropped between the seats? Ditch the discs and go digital with JVC's KD-X310BT. This digital media receiver handles all your music devices, plus it gives you a lot more power than your factory radio. Built-in Bluetooth® lets you enjoy hands-free calling and wireless streaming audio.

Go wireless with your Android™ or Blackberry™

Android™ and Blackberry™ users can control Pandora® right from the stereo through the Bluetooth connection — no wires needed. JVC's Smart Music Control app lets you use your compatible Android phone's touchscreen to control the action using finger swipes and gestures — for example, make an upside-down "V" to change the source. With your Android phone safely attached to a mount, you can reach down and skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

The KD-X310BT plays MP3, WMA, WAV, and even FLAC files. Putting together a custom road mix on a thumb drive for a long trip? You can use JVC's Playlist Creator software on your Windows® PC to organize your music, so you can find the song you want in a flash with the JVC's controls.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

Enjoy Siri Eyes Free technology

The KD-X310BT works seamlessly with your iPhone® or iPod®. You can talk to Siri, of course, and the built-in iPod controls let you access your playlists when you plug your iPod into the USB port on the front panel. If you're a Pandora® or iHeartRadio user, you can connect your iPhone and access basic controls like "play," "pause," "thumbs-up," and "thumbs-down" on the screen display. For added convenience, the 2-way control feature lets you pick music using the receiver's controls, or you can use the phone itself.

JVC KD-X310BT Digital Media Receiver

The simple control panel gives you access to a wide range of entertainment options.

Do more with your USB connection

The powerful 1A USB port lets you keep your smartphone charged while it's performing many battery-draining tasks at once. And with your smartphone connected, you can listen to your phone's internal memory as one source and access the little microSD card as another. You can even pair two phones at once, so you'll never have to decide between the personal phone and the work phone again. The Drive Change feature allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the JVC's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.

Expand your system

The KD-X310BT offers the connections you'll need if you're planning to build a complete car audio system sometime in the future. When it's time to add a powered sub, you can switch the rear preamp outputs over to subwoofer mode to control your bass from the receiver. A front aux input lets you hook up other gear, like a Dock & Play satellite radio.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The JVC KD-X310BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JVC KD-X310BT. See JVC's Bluetooth compatibility chart for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled devices.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the JVC KD-X310BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can pair up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices to the JVC  head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time (but only one can be used at a time).

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KD-X310BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (with mounting bracket) featuring adjustable gain, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering A Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-30 seconds. The KD-X310BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing A Number: Using the KD-X310BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel rotary dial.
      • Speed Dialing: You can store up to 6 contacts in the memory of this unit for speed dialing.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KD-X310BT.You can search through your contacts alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). Up to 400 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone.
      • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 each).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.
Note: The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the JVC head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The JVC KD-X310BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KD-X310BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KD-X310BT also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the JVC KD-X310BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel control and external microphone. Simply press the "phone command" button on the KD-X310BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the KD-X310BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    USB/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The JVC KD-X310BT features a front-panel USB 2.0 type-A port (behind a sliding cover) connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The USB port enables audio playback and control of MP3, WMA, WAV, and FLAC audio files stored on portable USB mass-storage class devices.

Note: When a mass-storage class (MSC) compatible smartphone is connected to the head unit's USB input, you can select its internal memory or external memory (such as a SD-card) for stored music playback.

The unit's front-panel auxiliary input can be turned On or Off.

    Smartphone Integration

Android Compatible: The JVC KD-X310BT supports USB-connection and playback of Android smartphones with Froyo or Gingerbread operating systems installed.

    • JVC Music Control: By connecting the JVC receiver via USB to an Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only) that has the free JVC Music Control app installed, it allows you to list and search your MP3 music stored on the smartphone from the receiver by artist name or album name. The JVC Music Control app also analyzes all of your songs that are in your Android smartphone, and creates a playlist according to your mood. Once the application has completed the analysis of the songs, simply select your current mood, and this application will generate a list of songs that best fits your mood. Your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol.
    • Drive Change Mode: When an Android smartphone is connected to the USB input terminal, you can select its internal memory or external memory (such as an microSD card) to playback the songs stored on the phone or on the memory card. This feature is also compatible with other USB mass storage class compliant smartphones, such as Blackberry. You can also change drives (up to 5) on multi-drive devices, such as multi-card readers and USB hubs.

iPod/iPhone Connectivity w/ DAC Bypass: The JVC KD-X310BT's front-panel USB port can acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the Lightning or Dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The KD-X310BT's USB connection also offers music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the JVC in-dash head unit. You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the JVC head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit Mode: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). The KD-X310BT also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of your iPod/iPhone. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from select music apps streamed to your iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the KD-X310BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information; such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/iPhone Mode: The iPod/iPhone Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "iPhone Mode".
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    • IF Filter: You can also switch the tuner's IF filter to Wide or Auto to increase/decrease the sensitivity.
Note: You can set the built-in AM/FM tuner to US standard or European tuning.

Internet Radio Apps: The JVC KD-X310BT allows you to access Pandora and iHeartRadio online music services through your USB-connected iPhone or Bluetooth-connected Android/Blackberry smartphone. Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the KD-X310BT via the 30-pin or Lightning cable supplied with your iPhone. Your Android or Blackberry smartphone must support A2DP/ AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the JVC KD-X310BT. Your iPhone, Android smartphone, or Blackberry device will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Pandora App (for iPhone/Android/Blackberry): The free Pandora App (either from iTunes Apps, Google Play, or BlackBerry App World) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the JVC KD-X310BT using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) or Bluetooth paired Android/Blackberry smartphone. The JVC KD-X310BT provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up/thumbs down and bookmark them on your Pandora account. An active Pandora account is required.
    • iHeartRadio Link (for iPhone/Android): The free iHeartRadio Link app for JVC (either from iTunes Apps or Google Play) lets you play music from the iHeartRadio music service through the JVC KD-X310BT using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+), or Bluetooth paired Android smartphone (2.2+). The iHeartRadio music service provides access to more than 1,500 live radio stations from coast-to-coast (including pop, country, urban, rock, talk, and sports). The KD-X310BT will provide control over the iHeartRadio Link app, as well as display station identification and song/artist information. From the head unit's front-panel controls, iHeartRadio stations can be searched by the following categories (Local, Genre, City, or My Stations). The Local selection provides a list of radio stations in your local listening area. The unit also provides over 22 Genres to choose from (including pop, country, hip-hop, jazz, etc.) to help you find the right radio station for you. In addition, you can search for radio stations by City. Cities can be searched alphabetically (A-Z). You can even store your favorite stations (My Stations) for easier, quicker access. An active iHeartRadio account is required.
Note: Access to these Internet Radio services will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android/Blackberry smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KD-X310BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KD-X310BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KD-X310BT are as follows:

    good radio

Written By Anonymous, phillipsburg, nj on Wednesday, August 13, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good radio! Bluetooth works really well and Ipod capability was a plus. My only complaint is that this radio is advertised to have steering wheel control capability but it does not. This left me a bit displeased meaning I need to rely on the remote it came with.
    Pros:
    Ease of use
    Cons:
    Steering wheel control incapability
Crutchfield response on Monday, August 18, 2014
We strive to make it clear which stereos are compatible with a vehicle's steering wheel controls. This stereo is one of those that are not. We encourage every customer to contact us before ordering to confirm that the stereo is going to do everything you want it to and to make sure you get everything you need to make it work. Upon contacting our customer service team, they were able to help him select a different receiver that does work with his steering wheel controls.

    Great Stereo

This is a great stereo, and really easy to install ourselves in my '05 Elantra. Took less than an hour and everything was straightforward and simple. Once the stereo was in, it felt like a brand new car. I haven't updated the speakers yet, and the sound quality and clarity is so much better with this JVC. I'm extremely happy with it. It's simple to use and pair with my phone, the bluetooth works wonderfully and it was perfect for my weekend roadtrip.

Great unit for the price I paid! I needed a simple Bluetooth receiver for my phone and tablet in the car and this thing fits the description and works great!
    Pros:
Small size, easy to install, great sound, works great!! Small external Mic for phone makes the call quality actually workable while driving.
    Cons:
The only con is I can't adjust the color of the display and the auto adjusting brightness doesn't seem to work in my car.

As Much As I like this Stereo. I am amazed how easy the install was. Ordered 4 kicker speakers as well. Got the package today @2p. Was kinda busy, and thought I wouldn't get to it today. Started with 1 speaker , and that went well, so the other, then the back pair.... The crutchfield directions, and install kits, wiring harnesses, and tools made this so easy. The last time I put in a stereo, was in the 80's. The installs have come along way. Stereo was simple to install, and to set up. I usually don't review things , but this experience was worth taking the time for the review. Thanks Crutchfield, wont hesitate to order from you again. Will definitely pass this on to friends.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent several months looking for a unit to replace my defunct stock HU and FM transmitter. I have a 2004 Ford Taurus SES with minimal space in the dash and the unfortunate combination of a/c controls with it. I've replaced HUs before but none that required so much interior disassembly as Ford was nice enough to put the amplifier in the trunk *sigh*.... Overall the unit fits my needs and is easy to control.
    Pros:
Separate dimmer control for buttons/display with auto day/night switching Controls my iPhone music apps Pandora interoperability is awesome Charges a connected USB device fairly quickly Powers on/off quickly Smaller form factor for tight spaces Prestripped wiring harness connections Buttons and volume dial are easy to operate while keeping your eyes on the road
    Cons:
Remote is small and has few useful functions (I lost it in the first week) The HU cage is flimsy, the mounting brackets were much more useful The display has crazy glare in the daytime making reading it at a glance close to impossible

I bought this system to replace the 6 CD changer in my 2002 Ranger Edge 4x4. The sound is excellent, even with the factory speakers. Its loud, clean and the Bluetooth works flawlessly with my iPhone5, playing my playlist on the phone and Pandora without any problems. The installation was done by my 18 year old son, since the system was a Fathers Day present. Im quite happy with the system.
    Pros:
High power, ease of connections with phone, excellent FM radio quality, lots of adjustable features, clear phone calls.

    Very Happy Customer

Written By Hank, NJ on Wednesday, June 25, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this receiver into a 2003 Blazer about a week ago and I'm extremely happy with it. Installation was a breeze. The wiring diagram and adapters that were supplied were a breeze to follow. Just match up the wires by color and connect. I chose to solder the wires together but it would work just as well with the crimp connectors. The radio sleeve fit right into the single-din kit an felt very solid once I bent the tabs on the sleeve to hold it in. No mods were required to the truck at all, just bolted right up. The receiver is light and only about 4" deep. I did place a small spacer between the bottom of the radio and the pocket on the single din kit which made it sit very level once installed. Plugged the adapter into the radio and connected to the stock wiring harness. All functioned perfectly including the auto-dimmer when the lights are turned on.

I did go with an aftermarket mic for the Bluetooth phone (olympus ME-52W), because I had read reviews that the stock mic was crappy. Hands-free phone sound quality is good and voice dialing works very well.

I downloaded the JVC app for my Android and it works like a champ. Once I paired it up it autoconnects every time I get in the car now. Playback of music files from the phone via Bluetooth sounds great. It is pretty cool how you can control the receiver with the phone as well. Have not tried the USB input but it is a cool option to stick a thumb flashdrive in there to play MP3s.

    Very Happy!
    Pros:
Installation instructions very clear. Wiring kit very easy to follow as all wire colors matched for both harnesses Sound quality is great. Tons of features for the price. JVC Android App Hands-free Bluetooth!
    Cons:
Buttons and volume knob do feel a bit cheap. Setup could be a bit complicated for some (not really an issue for me)

Stock system 01 Civic LX, install was easy with the adapter kit. Now I was going to upgrade my speakers at some point..thinking I would, but holy carp, the sound with the stock speakers, and I had to open the trunk to see if they actually were stock... yes, is amazing with this unit, I'm a bass junky and this unit had my mirrors vibrating, with stock speakers! I actually had met my match, I have never had to turn the bass down on any head unit I have had, always maxed out, not this little gem, I had to back off, sorry Crutchfield, stock speakers can stay... but then again can you imagine an upgrade? hummmm. Only complaint would be the display, which I can not really see well in daylight, yes I have it all the way up.

For the price, I can't imagine better

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this head unit. It's easy to install just about anything when you order through Crutchfield, on the account that they send you helpful wiring harnesses and dash mounts specific to your vehicle. The KD-X310BT is perfect for people(like me) that don't use old school CD's anymore and are over having to use a 3.5mm cord(although there is a jack if you need to use one) to your mp3 player. Now, you can just stream it through your trusty smartphone via bluetooth. It has good power, a nice look to it and you can adjust the brightness in two different zones on the face. And last, but not least, the bargain of a deal for this piece of machinery can't be beat!!
    Pros:
Price. Ease of use and install. Bluetooth. Power.
    Cons:
Not a dang thing. This isn't really a Con but, if you are streaming music and you plug it into the usb to charge your phone, it stops the music. BUT, if you plug it in to charge THEN start streaming music it'll continue to play and charge. Hope that made sense !!.

Bought this unit for my 1983 VW Scirocco, I don't listen to CD'S as much anymore and didnt have alot of room for a head unit. So I went with this one, which is have the depth of a CD unit plus I get hands free calling!! Absolutely love it! Sound quality is great and connectivity to my phone was a breeze, can't go wrong for the price! highly recommend it!

    Great Affordable Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this is a great unit. I would definitely recommend it but hope that JVC upgrades the cheap feeling buttons in future models. The unit has plenty of power for a typical user running 6.5" separates and the menus are fairly straightforward to navigate. It took a couple of tries to get the Bluetooth connected (probably user error) but it works great now. I can't believe I didn't think I wanted or needed the Bluetooth. My truck's interior is fairly loud yet callers have always been able to hear me clearly through the remotely mounted mic. Probably the best money I have spent on the truck to date.
    Pros:
BT for phone and music Power output is excellent Blue panel lights can be manually dimmed very low at night
    Cons:
Cheap clicky buttons No screws included to attach the unit to installation brackets (this is just a really cheap move on JVC's part) Display doesn't correctly dim with the headlights (it should according to JVC)

Excellent sound and lots of features for the price. Phone, IheartRadio, and Pandora all work great.
    Pros:
Has all the good Bluetooth features you could ever want. Is about 2 inches shorter in depth than most units making it fit where others may not. Sound quality is a vast improvement over stock radio.
    Cons:
Android app takes some getting use to and can be frustrating to use sometimes. Does not change display colors so that it can blend in with my red dash lights. USB does not support my 32g sandisk fit flash drive so I had to buy a 4g drive because I knew it was supported. It would be nice if JVC listed the largest supported drive in their radio specs. Does not have a plug to add a satellite radio to later. Does not have a plug on the back for adding existing steering wheel controls.

    Impressive sound for the money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a better sound system for my older Jeep Wrangler. I purchased this unit and some good speakers. I haven't installed the speakers yet and the sound quality is already really impressive. I don't use CDs any more so the digital media unit is perfect. I can't beleive a unit for this price is this good. No issues with the media controls, integrates perfectly with my I Phone 4s and I Pod Touch. As usual Crutchfield included everthing needed for the install. I dont normally write reviews but this unit is worthy!
    Pros:
Sound quality, connectivity with media devices, price.
    Cons:
Haven't seen any yet. No CD but that is why it is a great unit for the price.

    A+ media player

A+ media player. It allowed me to replace my outdated 10 CD carrier in the trunk of my car, and instead to very easily carry and play my 6000+ MP3s through the USB port. The installation was very easy and I was able to do it myself. The radio features are simple and useful. The sound is better than my old Kenwood radio. The bluetooth connections worked flawlessly with my Nexus 4. The best part was the value. A great 21st century (no CDs) media player for just $99.
    Pros:
No CDs, 21st century media player. Flawless blue tooth connection.
    Cons:
    None.

This radio has been nothing but a pleasure. The sound quality is so pure and crisp that I had to actually turn down my sub woofer amp because it was too loud. The phone features are easy to use. Everything is just wonderful.

I replaced the factory AM/FM radio with this unit, and I haven't been this happy with an entertainment purchase in a LONG time. It sounds good and the Bluetooth hands free functionality is such a nice enhancement for my no-frills old car.
    Pros:
The price and the features of this until are a great value.
    Cons:
Get a good balance from the brightness of the display is a bit challenging. At night it can be really bright, and I'm struggling to get the "auto" brightness working or figured out without manually dialing it down.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an old 79 BMW that had just a radio originally. The last owner decided to have a full stereo system put in the car, but ever since I purchased it from him I was disappointed with how it looked because the car could not accommodate a full sized radio, so it was sticking out from the center console. I decided to check out if there were options that would not be too pricey for a shorter depth unit that would fit into the dash without sticking out.. no it doesnt look factory on a 79 BMW, but it looks a lot nicer with it flush to the center console as it was intended with the factory unit. Sound quality for such a tiny thing is great, but I should note I do have a full amp in the trunk so that is kinda cheating. I like the options, and the android integration works excellent. I also purchased an after market Olympus ME-52W Noise Canceling Microphone and a gold plated mini 3.65mm cord to replace the stock mic that comes with the unit... and now the Bluetooth audio is great!! The stock mic is pretty crappy and I knew this going in because I bought another JVC for my VW GTI.. the extra $20 for quality audio capture is VERY worth it if you talk with any sort of frequency on your phone in the car. All in all this stereo was very good value in a very short unit (4.2" deep) which is exactly what I needed. All of the features work and the Android integration over BT is priceless to me. Phone becomes audio server, handsfree audio, and GPS navigation all in one :-)
    Pros:
Decent sound BT works very well Android features work very well good documentation Consistent with other JVC products for operation
    Cons:
Mic that comes with for BT hands free is pretty crappy, buy an aftermarket

hi guys, just bought this over the weekend and find it really good. only one question. I want to charge my iphone and use a flash drive to listen to music at the same time. Will a usb hub allow this? Cheers [ L  Aug 20, 2014 ]

    • Yeah I done want to use cigarette lighter too many wires. :-) [ L   Aug 22, 2014 ]
    • I'm not sure if there is enough power to do both. I just charge via an adapter to the cigarette lighter. I primarily use Bluetooth for the phone anyway. [ JOSHUA A.   Aug 20, 2014 ]
Does the Siri function only work when paired over Bluetooth? For example, if I use the USB connection (to save power/charge my phone), the Siri function no longer works? [ Sam  Aug 15, 2014 ]

    • I'm not sure about that, I'm using an android based phone. [ JOSE   Aug 16, 2014 ]
Is the display bright at night, or can you dim it sufficiently? I bought a Kenwood 5 years ago that you can practically use for a reading light. Not my favorite feature. [ Jason  Jul 24, 2014 ]
    11 answers
    • I have pretty decent sensitivity to light at night. I find it dims well. It has a day/night setting and you can enable it to automatically go to night mode when headlights are on or leave it manual and hit the dimmer button. Both settings have adjustability that allows you to set brightness for the buttons and the display independently in each mode. This is nice because my other stereo display (different brand) in another vehicle is very hard to see at night when fully dimmed, but the buttons are still pretty bright at full dim. [ Nathan   Jul 29, 2014 ]
    • There is a dimmer on this unit. It has day, night and auto; I actually always keep it set to day. I'm very pleased with this unit as it fits very well in my 1983 VW Vanagon Westfalia. These older vehicles did not have the depth required for a CD player and would require adapter kits to bring it out of the dash (ugly). I really like that I can control the iPod through the USB (iPhone 5s) as well as the head unit. It comes with the hands free mic but it doesn't work that well for my vehicle due to the age of the vehicle and road noise. I give this unit 5 stars for the Bluetooth, USB and price. Jason. [ Jason Anthony   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • You can dim it sufficiently...the face isn't the bright in the first place beside the blue on the buttons but you cam dim it low as u want.... [ ROBERT   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • Yes it can be dimmed. I suffered an eye injury a few years ago which made me very sensitive to LED lights, especially at night. Not only can this unit be dimmed, but there are several color options that aid in this as well. [ Robert   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • You can reduce it but it's still pretty bright at night but it's easy to read. In my malibu it's the daytime i can't seem to adjust right to read it but i got use to it and great media radio! [ RANDALL   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • This display has a dimming feature so long as you connect the appropriate wire in the back. [ Louis   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • Yes, this is a very nice stereo with great sound adjustment and it does have a light adjustment as well. The bluetooth feature is great as well. Make sure you check on your vehicle as well to see if you need the reminder ding module for like if your door is open or a check or warning ding comes on so you can hear it if it comes out through your speakers. Depends on vehicle. [ Debra   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • The display can be dimmed for use at night. It certainly isn't much brighter than the other lights that will be on in your car. If you forget to change the the brightness, it will definitely be too bright though ;) [ JONATHAN   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • I think it does a good job. I don't think it is too bright at night. [ Michael   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • Jason, it is bright. However, you are able to dim it to your liking. [ BRYAN   Jul 25, 2014 ]
    • It has a dim function. At the lowest setting, its still pretty bright at night, but in direct sunlight, its kinda hard to see on the brightest setting [ Jason   Jul 25, 2014 ]

    • If you are trying to pair another device you need to first turn off Bluetooth on the original paired device. Then turn on blue tooth on the new device and pair. [ DREW   Jul 03, 2014 ]
    • Hello, the only way I know how to delete the paired Bluetooth. Is to do from the phone or iPad. Go to setting Go to Bluetooth Select device Then select forget the device [ TYE   Jul 02, 2014 ]
    • Turn off the blue tooth on your phone [ BRIAN   Jul 01, 2014 ]
    • Should be able to do that through the settings in your phone for Bluetooth. [ CRAIG W.   Jul 01, 2014 ]
