Features Overview: For vehicles that don't have a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) wire, the JVC KD-NX500 Navigation unit will not operate properly. This KV-PG1 Speed Pulse Generator is designed to detect the speed of the vehicle by the rotation of the tires, and send the speed pulse to the connected Navigation system. Magnetizing The Tire: One of the vehicle's rear tires will need to be magnetized by using the supplied magnet. Half of the circumference of the tire tread is to be magnetized, while the other half is to be demagnetized. This is done by dividing the tire into 2 sections, and rubbing the tread with the magnetizing side of the magnet on one section and with the demagnetizing side of the magnet on the other section. When the vehicle is in motion and the tire rotates, the sensor will pick up the alternating magnetic fields coming from the tire as a signal it can send to the navigation unit as a speed pulse. Sensor Installation: The sensor unit should be mounted in the trunk or near the rear wheel well of the vehicle. It should be kept away from the vehicle's battery, wiring, or electronic equipment such as changers, amplifiers, or speakers. The sensor unit picks up the magnetic field from the magnetized side of the tire as it rotates, creating a speed pulse. Wiring: The KV-PG1 Speed Pulse Generator comes with a 3-wire harness that plugs into the speed sensor. The 20' fused power wire connects to the accessory terminal of the vehicle's fuse block, and the 39" ground wire is connected directly to the metallic body or chassis of the vehicle. The 39" pink speed pulse signal lead connects to the speed signal wire supplied with the KD-NX500 Navigation unit (both wires have mating bullet connectors). Crutchfield Customer Review The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order. I installed this in my Chrysler PT Cruiser GT w/autostick which does not have a documented VSS signal. It installed easily (requires its own 12v and ground connections) -- read the manual on Crutchfield's site for location restrictions. One benefit of this unit is that there's no need to drill to through the firewall, which might be required to get access to the VSS signal in some vehicles. I am only annoyed that a Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal (VSS) connection is required AT ALL given that the internal GPS in the JVC KD-NX5000 is very sensitive and accurate with the antenna mounted on the roof. (It picks up satellite signals quite well even in the open-walled parking garage where I work). I wish JVC would have given me the option of not spending $150 on this and instead putting up with signal loss (and inaccurate calculations resulting therefrom) in tunnels, under bridges, trees, etc. while the unit is navigating by "dead reckoning." [It seems that all the manufacturers have in-dash GPS units that require a VSS input, so JVC is in good company.) I would assume that this unit -- which simply generates a pulse signal based on the sensed "magnetic" tire rotation -- probably generates a signal good enough to satisfy other maker's in-dash GPS units but the manual doesn't say either way. 10 out of 11 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Crutchfield Customer Review The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order. This product worked without any adjustments after the initial installation. It does come with a dual sided sticker so you can just stick it anywhere you need it. I am using this product with the JVC KD-NX5000 Hard Drive Navigation/DVD Receiver. I cannot say whether or not it would work with other brands (i.e. not JVC) but if I had to guess I'd think it would. Like the previous reviewer I wish this wasn't needed but was glad to finally have the installation over with and everything working once it was installed. I went ahead and took my tire off for the magnetize|de-magnetize step, just seemed easier to me. I wish the ground wire was just as long as the power wire but I was able to find a good ground spot near the rear tire without much trouble. Anyway, this product works well. I don't know how long the magnetization of the tire lasts but the instructions say to do it once a year, assuming you don't rotate your tires. 1 out of 1 people found this helpful Was this review helpful?
