Our take on the JVC KW-R710

by Dave Delamere
JVC

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Big and bold

With JVC's KW-R710 CD receiver, you get big everything. Big buttons and a big display give you easy access to the controls on this big double-DIN stereo. A big palette of customizable colors in three different zones of the faceplate let you match your interior lighting or just highlight the controls and inputs you use most often. And by firing up this receiver's solid power and extensive sound-shaping controls, you get big sound for all your music.

Smartphone options

If you enjoy Internet radio on your smartphone, you'll really enjoy playing music from Pandora® and iHeartRadio® on this versatile receiver. Load the Pandora or iHeartRadio Link app on your iPhone®, connect it to the USB input, and you can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.

With JVC's Music Control app loaded on select Android® phones, you can play and control the stored music on the smartphone. And if you want hands-free calling and wireless audio streaming, you can connect the optional JVC KS-BTA100 Bluetooth® adapter (sold separately) to the KW-R710 for more convenience.

Added cool stuff

JVC upped the power in their USB port, which lets you keep your smartphone charged, even when it's doing several tasks at once. Drive Change allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to the receiver's USB input, then select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives. You can also connect just about any portable audio player to the KW-R710's front aux input, or simply pop in one of your favorite CDs.

Once you're playing what you want, shape your sound with the onboard 3-band parametric equalizer. If you're adding amplifiers or a powered subwoofer, the two sets of 2.5-volt preamp outputs provide you the clean signal you need.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this JVC stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the JVC, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

App Note: iHeartRadio playback and control requires the "iHeartRadio Link for JVC" app on your smartphone.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Audio Section

16 Bit D/A Converter: The JVC KW-R710 utilizes a 16-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The JVC KW-R710 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KW-R710 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels (200 total watts)
Note: When you are using the KW-R710 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

2.5V/4CH Preamp Output: The KW-R710 is equipped with two pair of 2.5V preamp outputs (Front, Rear/SW). You can set the Rear/SW preamp outputs for connecting a pair of full-range rear speakers (through an external amplifier) or for connecting a subwoofer (through an external amplifier). When set for rear speakers, the rear outputs operate with the unit's fader control. When set for subwoofer, the outputs are non-fading.

Subwoofer Controls: When the unit's Rear/SW preamp output is set to Subwoofer, you can set the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter at 55Hz, 85Hz, or 120Hz. You can also adjust the head unit's subwoofer level between -8 and +8 (separate from the main volume level).

Pro EQ: The KW-R710 is equipped with JVC's Pro EQ. The integrated equalizer offers 12 preset sound modes (Flat, Hard Rock, Jazz, Pop, R&B, Talk, vocal Boost, Bass Boost, Classical, Dance, User 1, or User 2) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    Pro EQ
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz +/- 12 dB (-6 to +6) Fixed
Note: You can store Pro EQ bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Digital Track Expander: The digital Track Expander utomatically enhances compressed music files and restores the original richness of the recording.
    • Bass Boost: The unit's Bass Boost enhances low bass frequencies.
    • Loud (Loudness): This feature boosts low and high frequencies to produce a well-balanced sound at a low volume level. You can set this feature to High, Low, or Off.
    • Volume Adjust: The input level of each source (other than FM) is adjustable relative to the FM radio volume, so there isn't a significant volume difference when changing sources. Each source is individually adjustable from -5 to +5.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

3 Zone Variable Color: The head unit's variable color illumination is separated into 3 Zones (Zone 1, Display Zone, and Zone 2). The KW-R710 offers 29 color presets and custom colors for each of these zones. You can choose one of these color presets or select the ColorFlow mode which scrolls through all 29 color presets. Additionally, there is a User preset, allowing you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue from 0 to 31; resulting in approximately 30,000 custom color options. You can choose to use the same color for all 3 Zones, or use a different color for each separate Zone.

    • Zone 1: Zone 1 consists of the rotary knob and the push buttons around the knob, plus the Aux and USB input.
    • Display Zone: The Display Zone consists of the front-panel LCD.
    • Zone 2: Zone 2 consists of the Preset buttons and eject button.

Lighting Effects + Color Guide: You can select a preset color change pattern/speed for all 3 Zones (Zone 1, Display Zone, and Zone 2). Choose from Spectrum, Groove, Techno, Emotion, Relax, and Night Sweep. When activated, the Color Guide mode changes the display and all button illumination to white when menu settings or music list search are performed.

Brightness & Dimmer Control: The unit offers a daytime and nighttime brightness setting for the LCD, button, and USB input terminal. You can adjust the brightness level of each zone manually from 0-31. The unit's dimmer control can be set automatically or manually; select "Off" for daytime brightness setting, "On" for nighttime brightness setting, or "Auto" which switches between day and nighttime brightness setting automatically when you turn off/on the headlights (orange/white wire of harness must be connected to headlamp circuit).

Day & Time: The unit displays a 12-or 24-hour clock, as well as the day (Sun/Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat). The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The JVC KW-R710 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is no mounting sleeve included for a Euro- or Custom-mount installation. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Remote-Bluetooth Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KW-R710 comes supplied with a wireless remote control (RM-RK52). The remote contains Attenuator, Sound, Source, Tracking, and Volume functions. The remote operates off of a single CR2025 3V Lithium-cell battery (included).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Bluetooth: The JVC KS-BTA100 Bluetooth Adapter (105KSBTA10, sold separately) provides Bluetooth hands-free communication and digital audio streaming functions for the JVC KW-R710. The JVC KS-BTA100 gives you hands-free communication from your compatible Bluetooth mobile phone and wireless streaming audio from a Bluetooth enabled digital audio player, when connected to the JVC in-dash head unit. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this radio for my Ford Explorer. It fits in the double DIN space perfectly, and the choice of colors for the display are a nice touch. Searching through the menu to decide on the options you want can be a little time-consuming, but is a necessary evil. I have a problem with the clock losing time every now and then, not sure why, but it's not a big deal to me. Other than that, I really like it.
    Pros:
Looks good, easy to use, good value
    Cons:
    Menu functionality

Awesome stereo. Works as it should and with the factory BOSE speakers and amps, it's awesome.
    Pros:
Functions Great. Looks great. Lights are a perfect match for the Corvettes dash lights. A nice quality piece at a great price.
    Cons:
Lights take a little bit of work to get them set right, but that's no biggie. You just have to be patient. I think you can match about any color you want.

    Great Customer Service

I needed to take one of the most difficult tasks in a marriage; Spousal Technical Support. It was time to replace the broken stereo in her 2012 Nissan Versa. The new JVC came to our door faster than expected. The installation kit was complete. Instructions were easily interpreted. Only took an hour and a half to install. Most of the time was taken soldering wires. The stereo fired up first try. Unfortunately, I had wire the Blue wire from the antenna adapter to ground so the stations weren't all coming in. I email late Saturday afternoon expected an answer the following Monday. In Minutes I received an email from Matt in customer service providing me a solution to the issue. I attached the Blue wire from the antenna harness to the Blue/White wire from the JVC Harness and the Blue/White wire from the Versa's Harness. Re-installed the radio and now the tuning is better than the original radio.

It's great when you get help the instant you need it.
    Pros:
Everything needed to replace the existing radio was provided. The delivery was fast. Customer service is excellent!
    Cons:
Instructions could have been a little clearer on the blue wire from the antenna harness. I might have miss read though.

I was stuck deciding between this model and the one above it with blutooth. I decided on this one because it was cheaper, supports up to 5 flashdrives on a hub and can charge your phone. And it was 1/3rd less in price. I honestly don't use blutooth when I've had cars with it so it didn't matter to me. For me the layout and low price were important. It also had more power than the Pioneer similar models. I just have a 16GB flashdrive the size of my thumb plugged it--what else could I need? Works great. Sounds great. I just wish there were buttons for bass boost and loud (you have to go into the audio menu to adjust). The only other complaint is the color matching--you can do day custom, night custom or presets. I'd like to be able to do the flow preset (goes thru all the color schemes) for the display screen just for the day setting (headlights off) but apparently the presets are for both day and night which is a shame.
    Pros:
looks cool low price lots of power good sound great usb port with power
    Cons:
no blutooth (get the model up for $50 if that's a deal breaker--it isn't for me) no "loud" or "bass boost" button for quick access presets for screen color are too general

You can spend literately hours customizing ever aspect of this radio. It made my factory speakers scream, which is great, save money on new door speakers. But the iPod/iPhone controls are kinda clumsy, lengthy to track down songs. Adjusting the amp and sounds settings is endless. Great you have the option, but my truck isn't used in completions, kinda over kill to be honest.
    Pros:
GREAT deal. Value for the $$$ is awesome. Looks good.
    Cons:
A little low on the "user friendly" side of things, but I buy it again if I had too.

I purchased this stereo to replace the factory radio in my 2002 Ford F250. I went with the double DIN because I didn't want the extra dead space in the dash. As with any new electronic gadget with a ton of features, it took a while to get used to. I love the Pandora feature that integrates with my iPhone 5. The install took longer than I expected due to the dash opening modification. I found it easier to just remove the dash to cut out the factory plastic tabs around the edge. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase!
    Pros:
Great sounding stereo with a ton of features
    Cons:
Modifying the dash opening was a little more difficult than expected. As the instructions state, a rotary cutting tool is a MUST.

Bought this unit to change out factory unit which worked fine just wore the paint off the buttons. Love the ease of installation. Went right in no problem. Great fit with install kit that came with the unit. Great sound. Love all the features.
    Pros:
Really awesome light show with all the different built in schemes. Easy to change color patterns to less distracting scheme for night driving. Easy to change equalizer settings.
    Cons:
Some of the function buttons are a little small and hard to aim for when driving.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm very happy. It took a lot longer to install it than I was expecting, but I'm sure if I ever install a car stereo again, it'll be easier. My only question: Has anyone had issues with the scrolling? When my 6th gen 160gb iPod Classic is plugged in, it only scrolls through the song name when the song starts, then goes back to the time. I have the scroll set on "Auto" and the time display turned off. The user's manual says that when the scroll is set on Auto, it's supposed to scroll through the info in 5 second intervals. It only does that when I turn on the car. Any ideas? I'd like it to continually scroll through all the info so I don't have to keep hitting the display button to see the album & artist name.

Replaced my factory unit that has been giving me problems for months now. I had the old unit out and new unit in a less than an hour. Sounds better than ever and looks great.
    Pros:
    Perfect fit, no modifications needed.
    Cons:
Had to make one call to tech support because I had no audio once unit powerd up. Turned out I had not connected the power antenna wire (Blue & white wire) to the vehilce adapter soit would turn on the bose amplifier. I had left it unhooked because I don't have a power antenna. Instructions were somewhat confusing on this but tech support had my issue solved in no time. They were great!!!!!

This is a fairly decent after market stereo. Didn't have any problems with the install pertaining to the stereo itself, just a slight snag due to the car it was installed in. It's easy to use and my wife loves to change the colors in it. My only complaint is that the color schemes are a but distracting if you use the presets that change colors on their own. Other than that, everything else is good. Sound quality, install, etc.
    Pros:
Easy to use, sound quality, install.
    Cons:
Preset color changing displays are distracting.

    Less Than Expected

Written By JB, Lancaster, Pa on Wednesday, July 02, 2014

Radio reception is terrible. The factory unit this replaced received 25 FM and 10 AM stations near our house. This unit receives 3 FM and 1 AM. Everything else works well, but the reception problem may mean I reinstall the old unit. Installation instructions were not complete, I expected a little more. I ordered from Crutchfield about 10 years ago and the installation instructions were perfect. This time there were many questions during this install. Several wires are not mentioned in the instructions and the fit is not great (small gap at top of unit).
    Pros:
    USB
    Cons:
    Radio reception

Looking for a low cost temporary replacement stereo this one fit the bill. Doubled the sound quality of the factory installed system that by the way, is amplified and comes with a sub. I would have needed to spend $1200 or more to put another MyGig system in. This gave me way better sound for a much lower price. Takes time to figure out the display lighting but it's pretty cool once you've got it figured out.
    Pros:
Great sound. Powerful USB charger. Easy to use basic functions
    Cons:
Takes time to figure out lighting schematics and advanced EQ settings and probably shouldn't be done while driving but once programmed, is not an issue.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit sounds great, so much better than what came with my Explorer. Great price on this unit. Setting it up takes a bit and it's not as easy to do some things as it was on the factory unit, but the sound makes up for all that. I don't really care about all the lights, so that's why it got a '4' on the coolness factor. With the instructions from Crutchfield, installation was relatively easy. Of course, I did have an electronic wizard friend of mine helping. But, using the adapting wiring harness and the installation bracket from Crutchfield, the new unit slipped in and fit perfectly. Thanks Crutchfield!
    Pros:
    Sound and cost.
    Cons:
Little too much lighting for my taste and haven't been able to get rid of gray 'moving billboard' on display. But, very minor compared to sound of unit.

for a relatively inexpensive stereo, it sounds great! does everything I wanted it to do and more. I still haven't figured out how to operate the color system on the display, but I just finished installing it last night. I love how everything you need to install and go is already included, it makes a lot of sense and relieved some stress. Considering this was the first stereo I installed without any assistance from my electrician friend, it was very simple to install as well. Great find!

    Awesome Radio!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recieved my head unit yesterday. Figured i would get the harness hook up out of the way before i tore my car apart. Made the connections with no problem, i had a quick question about one of the wires so i called Crutchfield tech support and they were great, very helpful. So I decided to install the head unit today, i have a 2003 civic. Started dismantling the dash as per the master sheet, not everything was 100% accurate so i had to figure some stuff out myself, but all in all it went alot smoother than i had anticipated. I mounted the radio to the factory bracket no problem and then reinstalled all the trim. The fit was perfect , its so clean it looks stock. I couldnt be happier. Will definitely purchase from Crutchfield again.
    Pros:
The install was fairly smooth and i love the look and sound from the head unit. Sounds alot better than the stock unit, even with the crummy stock speakers.
    Cons:
Not everything on the master sheet was 100% accurate so i had to figure some things out for myself.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Stereo was an upgrade for the ubiquitous "factory" unit with cassette player.... Install for a 2005 CRV went flawlessly with Crutchfield install kit. Sound improvement was instantaneous once fired up and even made the factory speakers sound good ( have since replaced factory speakers with a set of decent Kickers). Tests were run on old acoustic recordings as well as more modern tracks and clarity of guitar, bass work and vocals was excellent. For the aficionado I am sure there are minor shortfalls in the sound quality but this unit performs very well for the money. Bottom line my daughter is happy with the sound and it didn't break the bank doing it. Would of given "Ease of use" 5 stars but I have old fat fingers and a certain amount of touch is required to navigate the functions, after a few attempts I was able to operate without a hitch.
    Pros:
Good sound quality for the money, clarity is good for music types tested, CD player is easy to use, has both 3.5mm and USB access for music input. Allows my daughter to rock the vehicle without rocking the neighborhood....
    Cons:
    None so far

Decent radio for value, had open box to save additional money.
    Pros:
Good price compared to going to the store. Big savings and included all bedfast installation gear which was a huge help and big money saver
    Cons:
    Really can't think of cons

For the money, I gotta say this unit rocks. I wanted something plain jane to charge/link my phone to the sound system in my truck. This fit the bill plus it made the sound so much better

    Great head unit, rough installation

A great stereo for the price. Lots of functionality... a simple install took me 4 hours because of the wiring adapter being incompatible with my Saturn L-300. No fault of the head unit though. A great product
    Pros:
Lost of features, should be an easy install
    Cons:
a little lightweight and feels like I could break it easily...

Hey there! I´m telling it straight, my passion is good sound and I´ve installed many different brands and styles of radios in a lot of cars. This JVC KW-R710 CD surpasses many with its great price, impressive graphics and excellent sound. If you like good sound and clarity, I´d definitely recommend this system.

    Pros:
Impressing! I´d recommend this one for its high quality sound and clarity.
    Cons:

Does everything I wanted and more. Great sound from the factory speaker. Easy to install. The final install looks like it came with the car. I bought mainly for the USB feature which works great. The unit reads the multiple folders on the thumb drive with no problems. Cool color display that you can set to your taste.
    Pros:
Sound quality, easy install, ease of use.
    Cons:
    None

    Good basic unit

Written By RobG, Lincoln, NE on Saturday, May 24, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit is easy to use, and all the color options are a plus. The install was easy with directions sent by E-mail. The FM radio sound is normal for a unit of this price range. I am not real happy with the AM radio reception. The AM reception is not as good as the unit that came stock with the vehicle. I listen to a lot of talk radio and sports on AM and I don't get a clear signal on the outskirts of town like I did before. The CD works good and does not skip on bumps like the original unit. Overall I am happy with the unit, but if you listen to a lot of AM radio, you may look at another model. Still for the money it is a good basic unit.
    Pros:
Price, Looks, features, and ease of use.
    Cons:
    AM reception quality.

I used to have a single din JVC indash and wanted something newer and more compatible with my iphone. This indash is a great product hands down, some of the buttons are hard to get used to due to me being used to my older, simpler indash. The features that this indash has are numerous and can be somewhat overwhelming if you don't need them. Other than this good quality of too many options for its own good, anyone would love this indash. I can hook up my phone directly, my ipod directly and even my cheapo mp3 player that has a male usb port. I am very pleased with this indash an would recommend it to anyone. It took roughly 5 hours to install start to finish. I broke it up into a couple day job due to me not having a block set of time.
    Pros:
Colors are awesome!! You can set the equalizer the same way as a regular one, or be a pro and mess with the real tunes. Easy to install, and fun to listen to different set ups.
    Cons:
Just a little confusing to get to all the settings and used to all the buttons.

    Nice receiver

Written By Pat, Harrisonburg, VA on Monday, May 19, 2014

I bought this receiver for its 22 watts RMS, iPod connection and b/c it was a double din. I love it, excepting two things. 1) The AUX in seems to be slightly less loud than the USB connection. Initially there was a hiss in the AUX in, but when I changed patch cords, that cleared right up. 2) I have used several HU's with iPod interfaces and they all leave me wanting. When you decide to change artists, it defaults (as all of mine do) to the A's. If you want Frank Zappa, you are screwed. Other than these two things, it's great. I had the unit about a week before putting in an Alpine Power Pack. This HU and this amp coupled with a new sub and amp really produces some amazing sound. I love driving in my car.
    Pros:
Cool Display colors True 22 watts RMS sounds great
    Cons:
    Poor iPod interface

Bought the JVC KW-R710 for my 05 Silverado. I picked this particular unit for the features as well as the price. The unit has a lot going on, Near endless color and eq variations and plenty of power. The usb port is a great feature allowing one to load a thumb drive full of music and the ability to scroll through them. Crutchfields included detailed instructions made it a very easy and pleasant install. This was my first install and the experience was very good. The posi-connectors are a must making the job much easier. I now swear by them.
