Great Speakers

Written By Capt USMC, Green Valley, AZ on Saturday, October 23, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even though these speakers are now discontinued and replaced with a similiar model they are great sounding in all respects. I am not a big audio buff however I wanted a decent sounding pair of speakers that were well made and weather proof. The Polk Audio Atrium 6 fills the bill.
At the recommendation of Crutchfield representative Mark I ordered mine in the "Open Box" category, meaning they had been previously opened by someone. This category saved my over $150.00. The only downside I see is that the original box had been previously shipped and by the time it was reshipped to me it was on its last legs. Everything was in tact however it would not have sustained many more miles in transit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to mount with included brackets, sound is great. Great may be an understatement.
I am really happy with this purchase. I actually have reccomended them to a friend. I will
need to move before I can really see what they can do. Sound reproduction and
frequency response is the best I have heard from an outdoor speaker especially given
the size.

Patio Re-Do

Written By Jones, Quincy, IL on Thursday, September 09, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am in the midlle of remodeling my old patio. I was looking for outdoor spreakers that deliver a lot of bass without a lot of money. I had Bose 151's and thought they were ok and was actually looking at the Bose 251's. The more I reviewed spreakers the more people thought Bose were overrated. I had my local electronic store quote me on spreakers that were his recommendation. They were Niles and he quoted $300.00 before tax. I kept coming back to the Polk 60's with this price and all of the outstanding reviews. I never heard either the Polk or the Niles sets before. The Polk spreakers are bigger and very heavy for outdoor spreakers but wow do they deliver the bass. I have had them now for about 2 weeks and they sound great. They are only powered by the Sonos 120 amp and I was a little weary since this is only 55watts per channel. They do sound great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers are a little heavier and larger than I imagined when I took them out of the box.
However, the current price and sound way offset any concerns here. I've only had them for a week but great sound. I would recommend.

Love these speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought 3 sets of these speakers to set-up a 5.1 system on my covered porch. Wanted
outdoor speakers to ensure longevity even though the speakers are under the
roof...knew that bugs, humidity, etc would deteriorate indoor speakers over time. These
speakers are outstanding. Even without my subwoofer turned on, these speakers have
a strong amount of bass and their clarity and the strength of the sound is terrific. We
listen to music and play HD / Blue-Ray movies out on the porch and the sound is strong,
clear and rich and easily fills my backyard with my volume up only half-way on a 135W
onkyo receiver. When i add my subwoofer, it gets downright 2 year old
ran off the porch at the beginning of "Cars" because the race cars sounded so real.

Great Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought these speakers to replace some aging speakers that we had lakeside at our cabin. The difference is amazing. There is little or no distortion at higher volume levels, the sound quality overall is great and they look very nice as well. We're very happy with them, but our neighbors might not be quite as thrilled.

Replacements for a better sound

Written By Gordie, Dale Hollow Lake, TN on Monday, August 16, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a older pair of Infinity speakers mounted on top of our houseboat under the party top. I was dissatisfied with the sound and particularly the bass with the current set up. I admit this is very difficult environment to get great sound as there is only canvas above and no walls. On the suggestion from Crutchfield I decided to try a set of the Polk Atrium 60 speakers as they presented the best value given the application and (sale) price. I was even able to save a little additional by taking an "open box" set.

The speakers look nice and they outperform those that they replaced by a pretty good margin. The sound is much crisper and the bass is better than before. I wish I could get better bass but again I fault the application I have more for that than the speakers themsleves. I'm sure if I want to pay double or more I could get better bass but for the sound and price I am very satisfied.

Of course Crutchfield was great throughout the selection process with their advice and the ordering and shipping process. I have and will be back for all my electronics needs.

Quality Sound, Good Price

Written By James, Los Altos, CA on Thursday, August 05, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've wanted to have outdoor speakers for a long time, but most that I have heard sound pretty tinny. I do not believe you can judge how a speaker will sound outdoors in a listening room and I hated to buy more expensive speakers without knowing what they would sound like. So when I saw these on sale for, I took the plunge. They have a pure, rich sound, though the bass is a little light. If I am listening exclusively or mainly outside, I just turn off the indoor speakers and boost the bass on the receiver a little and it improves the sound (if you do this, be sure to turn off your subwoofer if it is on a separate channel!). My 15-year old Sony receiver (100 W/ch) drives them just fine at about 25% power, even with both sets on. I have cranked it up to about 50% without distortion and it could probably go louder, but I think the neighbors would start to complain. I have listened to many kinds of music--rock, jazz, blues, symphonic, chamber, organ, opera, etc.-and found the Atrium 60s at least satisfactory for all of them. Can't comment on their weatherproofing as the weather has been nice since I installed them.

Outstanding Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers to place outside on my deck. I mounted them underneath the soffit, one to protect from severe exposure to the elements, and two it was a convienent location to run the speaker wires back to my receiver. The speakers sound amazing, almost as good as my Infinity speakers inside my home which are twice the size. I love the mounting bracket which allows me to swivel the speakers towards the deck or yard depending on the event. Nice job Polk!!, and thank you Crutchfield for lowering the price. At this price, they are a great buy.

I installed a pair of these on my covered patio next to the pool. Had several different pair in the past and these just blew me away. Hi's and Lo's were great and the bass is especially nice for this outdoor speakers. Best set I have ever had out back.

Great Speakers, Great Value

Written By Alan, Duluth, GA on Saturday, April 24, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got a pair of these for my screened in porch. I matched them to a sonos zp 120 for my second zone. My standards were pretty high since I had a pair of Klipsch RB61's that I got from crutchfield used with my first sonos zone in the great room. those speakers are simply the best I've ever owned. But the Klipsch all weather stuff was very expensive for a screened porch so, at the suggestion of the crutchfield advisor, I ordered the Polk Atrium 60's. Wow. Not quite at the RB61 level, BUT darn close - and I have to admit, half the price and weather proof. I was going to save some $$ and get a pair of Atrium 55's for the patio/backyard below & beyond the screened porch but realized that with shipping, the 55's are only about $40 bucks less expensive than the 60's with free shipping, so another pair and my 3rd sonos zone is on the way. Really terrific speakers and the sonos system..... I'll review that too!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have to ding these down to a 3. Opened the box and 1 of the speaker mount knobs was
missing. These knobs are not small, makes you wonder how good quality control really is.
Crutchfield did offer to exchange, so no dings on them. I wanted them on the wall, so tapped
top hole for a fine thread bolt I had on hand. Speakers are high on the wall, so no biggy.
Sound quality is very good.

Great Indoors for Home Theater

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had these installed for a year now as side speakers in my Man Cave. I will be buying another pair for the outside deck when I get the wiring job done. I am contemplating using another pair as the rears for my 7.1 surround system but I'll probably go in wall with a pair meant for this. These speakers easily sound better than my older 1999 Polk tower monitors. Technology can do that in 10 years. They sound fantastic! Use a good power amp as they can take the juice. Bass is nice and tight and not boomy at all. I used them as side speakers as the mounting brackets work perfectly for my application. Trying to find mounts for bookshelfs that image them correctly and still support them is hard to do. These are a great solution for under ceiling beam mounting next to the ducting in my basement. I had them outside on my deck railing for a day. Dragged the power amp to the deck to try them out. Totally awesome sound. Looking forward to next summer as I should have the wiring ready to go for the deck by then. You can't go wrong with Polk and Crutchfield's service has always been first class.

Better than Bose

Written By Robert, Columbia, SC on Sunday, January 06, 2008

I have had these for 1.5 years and they are great. I had the Bose 251's in my old house, and these speakers blow them away. Way more sound and base than the Bose. This pair is over my bar and I am adding a second pair by the pool.

Excellent Performance and Projection

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are not your typical airy, all-treble, outdoor speakers. The sound is very full and definitive. With 100 watts of power behind them they perform like a pair of high end indoor stereo speakers, and fill 1200 sq ft of noisy city deck space with first-class sound.

Polk Audio Atrium 60

Written By Eric, Crookston, MN on Thursday, February 15, 2007

Replaced very cheap outdoor speakers with these last summer. They do a good job of filling the backyard with crisp clean sound but I was expecting a little more bass. Overall, the sound is very good. However, after just a few months mounted underneath the eaves on my house one of the grills fell off for no apparent reason.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with this product. The sound is crisp and clear,(so far my friends have been very impressed). These speakers do an exceptional job on my 1300 square foot deck. I mounted these speakers 12 feet apart at head level. I do need to run the bass at little higher than my indoor speakers to get the sound I want. Great product.

Fantastic Boxes

Written By Craig, Rocklin, CA on Wednesday, May 31, 2006

Wow ! We have a huge backyard and these speakers are fabulous. The bass was much better than anticipated. The sound is very clear and very natural. I located the speakers on the back wall of my house about 8 feet in the air. They are separated by about 20 feet across the back of the house. If you need the music to be loud it can be, yet as background they disappear. I am glad I spent the extra $90 and bought these instead of the 55's. Been buying from Crutchfield since 1981 and have always been treated right. Thanks and enjoy.

Weatherproof Design: The rugged, mineral-filled polypropylene enclosure features a rustproof aluminum grille, rustproof aluminum bracket, and stainless steel hardware. The Power Port features a Flared "Umbrella" Diffuser design that meets basic military waterproofing specs. With the supplied waterproof Power Port Plug installed, the Atrium60 meets or exceeds ASTM D5894-Salt Fog, Mil Standard 810 Immersion and Mil Standard 883 Method 1009 8 for salt and corrosion tests.

Enclosure Design: The sculpted front baffle and rounded enclosure minimize diffraction (sound reflecting off of hard edges) for more open and lifelike imaging.

Woofer: The Atrium60 uses a mineral-filled polypropylene woofer for clean midrange and deep, accurate bass. The woofer has a 2 pound ceramic magnet for high output and precise control. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Tweeter: The Atrium60 has a 1" metalized dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet to deliver exceptional accuracy.

Power Port: The speaker has a rear-firing Power Port vent for precise, deep bass response. The Power Port vent allows air velocity to slow gradually, which vastly reduces air turbulence and delivers greater bass efficiency than conventional ports. This specially designed Power Port vent also incorporates a bug screen protector.

Binding Posts: The Atrium60 has a set of 5-way gold-plated binding posts that will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, and single and dual banana plugs.

Integrated Mounting Bracket: The integrated rustproof aluminum bracket allows multiple mounting options and full 90-degree rotation. The Atrium60 can be mounted either horizontally or vertically and aimed to deliver the best possible sound in a variety of situations. Each Atrium60 weighs approximately 11.8 pounds.

Paintable: The enclosure, grille, and mounting bracket are paintable, allowing you to match any decor. A paint mask (not supplied) is recommended to protect the drivers and terminals.
