About the Polk Audio Atrium8 SDI

Tara W.
Use Polk's Atrium8 SDI speaker when you need maximum flexibility along with premium outdoor sound. It can stand alone as a single stereo speaker, or you can put two together for a high-performance stereo pair. One speaker is convenient when you want to pump tunes to a smaller area, like a deck or patio, or when mounting options are limited. If you have room for two speakers, these speakers will give you fuller sound and better stereo separation in larger listening areas. A simple switch allows you to choose between single-speaker or traditional two-speaker stereo playback.

This speaker boasts the build quality you'd expect from Polk. It gives you superb audio performance, thanks to dual 1" tweeters, one 6-1/2" woofer, and PowerPort® bass venting. And the rugged, weatherproof design meets or exceeds stringent military specifications for full exposure to the elements. That means you'll enjoy years of great tunes, whether you install them in your bathroom or in your backyard.

Polk's new Speed-Lock™ system makes mounting the Atrium8 SDIs quick and easy. Install the bracket and simply click the speaker into place. Then just aim the sound towards your listening area and tighten down the included thumbscrew.

Features

Weatherproof Design: Polk Audio All-Weather Certified, Atrium Series speakers exceed baseline industrial and military specifications for environmental endurance (ASTM D5894-UV Salt Fog, Mil Standard 810 Immersion, Mil-Std 883 Method 1009.8 for salt and corrosion.) Certification means Atrium speakers can effortlessly withstand the outdoors, and hold up in extreme temperatures and precipitation.

Polk Patented Technologies: Patented Dynamic Balance and Klippel Optimization technologies ensure the perfect material performance, eliminating driver and tweeter "artifacts" for more realistic sound reproduction at high and low volume levels.

  • Dynamic Balance: A Polk perfected method of analyzing a speaker's microscopic behavior with laser Interferometry. Polk engineers can tune out unwanted resonance and distortion with the right combination of materials, geometry and construction techniques. This brings you pure, distortion-free sound.
  • Klippel Optimization: By using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk engineers were able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension bringing you the best possible performance even at extreme listening levels.

6.5" DVC Woofer: The Polk Audio Atrium8SDI uses a dual-voice coil long-throw aerated polypropylene 6.5" woofer for clean midrange and deep, accurate bass. The dual voice coil design adds greater efficiency and power handling. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Dual Tweeters: The Polk Audio Atrium8SDI has two 1" anodized aluminum dome tweeters with rubber surrounds and neodymium magnets for better power handling, smoother response and greater accuracy. This Dual Tweeter Array features Stereo Tweeter Aiming for excellent imaging, allowing you to use the Atrium8SDI as a single stereo speaker, or as half of a stereo pair.

Rugged Enclosure Design: The durable, mineral-filled polypropylene cabinet design, with molded-in bracing, sounds like a real speaker (not "an outdoor speaker"), and survives years of seasonal changes, for great sound, no matter what the weather. The rugged, mineral-filled polypropylene enclosure features a rustproof aluminum grille, rustproof aluminum bracket, and stainless steel/brass hardware.

Note: The speakers are available in a black or white finish. The enclosure is also paintable.

Broad Coverage Baffle Design: The sculpted front, steeply-angled baffle design and rounded enclosure minimize diffraction (sound reflecting off of hard edges) for more open and lifelike imaging.

Dual Input/Single Input Feature: A rear mounted switch allows the Atrium8SDI to operate as a single, dual-input speaker for stereo applications, or a traditional single-input speaker for left or right use. When using the Atrium8SDI as a single stereo speaker, the dual tweeters and dual voice coils handle the left and right signals independently. For a stereo configuration, 4-conductor wiring is required, and one Atrium8SDI is equivalent to a pair of 8-ohm speakers. For traditional single-input use, only 2-conductor wiring is needed and the speaker impedance is 4-ohms.

5-Way Binding Posts: The Atrium8SDI has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts that will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Speed-Locking Mounting System: The included rustproof aluminum bracket allows multiple mounting options and is quick-and-easy to install. The Atrium8SDI can be mounted either horizontally or vertically and aimed to deliver the best possible sound in a variety of situations The integrated bracket provides full 180-degree rotation (when mounted vertically or horizontally. The mounting bracket even allows the speaker to be mounted snugly in a corner or under an eve (at a downward 45-degree angle). You can remove the bracket and use the speaker's built-in stability feet, if you simply want to place the speaker on a table or shelf.

Your power line voltage will not affect the speaker. The Bose 360 home system amplifier may or may not be compatible with the Polk Atrium speakers. You might want to check with Bose tech support.

No, they must hard wired. You can use a Sonos amp, which would allow you to control from the app.

do these work with google home?

It depends on the device that is powering the speaker Enter an answer to this question.

Don't know
christopher  Mar 04, 2019
A
This is just a speaker, they have no 'smart home' type components built into them. You connect them to an amplifier and music source. If you have an Amp or something that's powering them that's capable of integrating into an ecosystem like Google Home, then yes. But natively by themselves no.

Q
I would like to put these on the doors of my 16x12 ft work shop so I can listen to music inside and outside just by opening or closing the doors. My question is how would they sound in a smaller space like my shed seeing how they are made for large open areas?
brandon  Jul 16, 2018
1 answer
A
This is my second set of Polk Atrium SDI speakers. I've been able to mount both sets over the years in optimum spots on patios and each time, the sound has been very good. I would think they would be very good in an enclosed area such as yours, similar to most interior only speakers. Remind you that the woofer is not the size of typical indoor speakers, i.e. 8-10" so the bass may not be as good as you could get, but I don't know why you won't be pleased with these inside and out providing they are being driven by a capable source.

I am looking at putting this is an automotive environment with a head unit designed for 4 ohm loads. Since its an 8 ohm speaker what can I expect?

I don't know what would happen to these speakers if you put them in a vehicle but I have put home speakers in a vehicle before and it's a waste of time they were destroyed pretty fast as far as putting these speakers on a home system they rock well worth the money

Q
Can this speaker be used as a center channel speaker in a home theater set up outside?
drew  Jul 15, 2017
5 answers
A
Drew, I do not know for sure, the Atrium 8 SDI has the two 1in tweeters & center channels do not have any !! So........ I' am thinking the 61/2 woofer in he Atrium 8 SDI would act as a center channel just fine, however i have no idea about the tweeters for center sound quality !! Just a trial & error hook up !! I guess its not alot of help, sorry !! Charles B
brad  Jul 19, 2017
A
HI Drew -- I have used it in solo and also with two other speakers, though never in a home theater. I use it outdoors for music entertainment only. I can't think of a reason why theater sound would be different than music, but .... I'm not 100% expert. Bottom line -- yes to outdoors and yes with other speakers. -- Paul
paul  Jul 17, 2017
A
Depending on what you want. It can be used as center speaker. Enter
george  Jul 17, 2017
A
I have not tried to do that with my speakers but I don't see why not these speakers are loud and clear with a fair amount of bass even if they don't work right for a center speaker you'll have some really awesome speakers
jeff  Jul 17, 2017
A
I can't see what not. It has great midrange and up frequency response. Enjoy it

Q
Can I effectively run two of these off of 1 Denon Heos Amp? What would be the best way to wire?
matt  Apr 08, 2023
1 answer
A
You can, Matt. Even though the Polk Audio Atrium8 SDIs are used often as a stereo input speaker, they do have a rear mounted switch that allows the Atrium8 SDI to operate as a traditional single-input speaker for left or right use. The Polk's are 4-ohms in single-input mode and the Denon HEOS amp is 4-ohm stable. This would be a great way to get amazing sound quality and flexibility, a great choice!

I want to place these speakers outside for patio listening. There is no overhang or protection. I know they are rated as weatherproof but, will they withstand weather with no protection? Polk Audio Atrium8 SDI

I have these on the porch at my beach house that is right against the surf. They take a pounding from weather and salty air and look and sound amazing. I have had them for a few years now. The sound quality is top notch and they can rock the entire ocean if you want to crank them loud. Love them!
chris  May 21, 2020
A
Ours are mounted under an overhang of our roof. The main problem I would forsee is that the speaker connections (terminal posts) are open and not enclosed in any way. Could you possibly mount some sort of covering/overhang over the speaker at the mounting location to provide some shelter? They sound great.
bryan  May 20, 2020
A
Great speakers but mine are under a significant overhang- can't honestly say otherwise!
steve  May 20, 2020
A
I purchased my first pair over ten years ago, and I live in New England. The speakers stay out all winter, and the overhang is well above them, so they get snowed and rained on. The speakers lasted remarkably well, and sounded good until they finally got a bit cloudy and fuzzy in 2018. I replaced them with an identical but newer model, and I would buy them again - Polk quality and durability seems to be pretty good.
matthew  May 19, 2020
A
Yes, the Polk Audio Atrium8 SDI are exactly what I expected them to do. I live in North Jersey and I play them all year around and still getting the same quality sound year over year. So definitely get a pair of them. Antonio R.
antonio  May 19, 2020
A
I live in Southern California so we don't have extreme weather, but we do get rain about 4 months out of the year. My speakers have held up well and they aren't protected. I'm on my second set (my last speakers lasted 10 years outside).
donald  May 19, 2020
A
I've had these speakers mounted to the exterior corners of a pergola for >1yr and they've held up great, no issues. I'm in San Diego, we don't get a ton of rain and it never gets very cold, but they've survived 4 day stretches of rain without issue.
branden  May 19, 2020
A
Hello Morgan, Yes they will be fine, my overhang doesn't completely cover the speakers and they've been there two year and sound brand new.
louis  May 19, 2020
Q
What would be the best speaker wire combination? 2 or 4 conductor and 14 or 16 gauge? Also, compared with the Polk Atrium 6, which would be better for 2 zone & 2-speaker setup?
robert  Jul 19, 2019
2 answers
A
As for the 2-speaker setup: I have one in stereo mode and love it. However, one 8 is a comprise for stereo coverage. The 8's have better bass extension - important in an outdoor environment. So, if space and wallet permit, two 8's would be ideal. If it is a long wire run, thicker gage is better.
david  Jul 20, 2019
A
We have one Atrium8 on our back deck, set-up in Stereo mode. I am using 4 conductor 14 gauge wire to feed it Left and right channels from a Sonos Amp. The single speaker stereo option is excellent. Surprisingly rich sound for an outdoor speaker, even at a distance. Good luck with your setup!
david  Jul 20, 2019
Q
I am planning on hooking this up to my older Dennon 3313ci . The amp is a 7 channel and only runs at 8ohms. I was planning on using 4 of the channels for 2x Atrium 8 Speakers. I was going to run Front L&R to one speaker and Rear L&R to the 2nd speaker. By buddy was reading the specs and said this will run at 4ohms and burn my speaker. Is this correct? Please advise how to properly hook these up to a 8 ohm receiver. I would like to run them in dual input/stereo mode. Thanks!
luke  Jun 24, 2019

A
call Dennon but your friend sounds right no need to reinvent the wheel
dennis  Jul 16, 2020
A
Given that you will connect one Atrium8 SDI speaker to both the front left and right channels and a second Atrium8 SDI to the rear left and right channels on the receiver, this means that each amp channel on the receiver will see an 8 ohm load and work just fine. Can the body and the bracket and the grille be painted? I know they CAN, but is the adhesion good or are they designed to be painted?
anthony  Mar 21, 2018

They can be painted but with a light coat on the grille. The brackets would be easy the problem may be the body that is not the grille but possible as there are no connections or impediments to painting

I'm sure they can. As long as you do not paint any of the interior components, of course.

michael  Jul 05, 2017

I have them wired to my Sonos Connect: Amp, I highly recommend Sonos. Better than Bluetooth
james  Jun 10, 2017
A
I bought the Atrium8 to replace a speaker that died and specifically because it offers the dual input mode (both L and R inputs are driving a single speaker) that the old speaker utilized. It is in a protected space under the garage eave and it works great when I'm outside washing the car or working in that general outdoors area. It sounds awesome. That said, it really is just a speaker that any Bluetooth capable receiver can power. I happen to use an Onkyo TX-NR545 which works really well, drives additional speakers and although I don't use the Bluetooth feature of this receiver that often (I have gotten attached to satellite radio as my primary music source), it is easy to pair and sounds great. When friends come over and want to connect their device and listen to their playlists this Onkyo receiver is about as easy as I think it gets.

Q
For using a single atrium-8 in SDI stereo mode, does it make sense to use one 4-conductor outdoor speaker cable vs using two 2-conductor wires?
dan j  Jun 01, 2017
2 answers
A
throwing away money
dennis  Jul 16, 2020
A
There are two reasons to do the 4 wire set up: 1) you can use lower gauge wire and when combined they give you better performance over the same gauge single wire. 2) since you are using outside if one wire was ever clipped you'd still have a pair of wires to use. It totally depends on how long your outdoor run is and how complicated fated your setup is. I personally use the 4 wire set up with medium gauge. Good luck and enjoy the speakers.

I have 2 Polk outdoor speakers in a zone 2 configuration on one side of my house already and love them . Can I add a third which would be positioned in the back?
steve  Jul 15, 2016
3 answers
A
Yes, but additional speakers connected to the same receiver's terminal will affect the output on those speakers. I have Atrium 8 outdoor speakers. They have an optional set of terminals that allow you to get separation using just one speaker.
max a  Dec 28, 2020
A
You would have to use another zone without a stereo output and an empty plug in the back. I too have the Polk 8 Atriums
dennis  Jul 16, 2020
A
That would depend on your receiver.. not the speakers. If your receiver supports 3 zones it should work.

How do these compare to Definitive Technology AW6500 speakers? I have a pair of these and I'd upgrade if the Polks are better sounding
mike  May 17, 2016

A
I had the Def. Tech. AW6500 speakers for years and LOVED them. When I built my new house a year ago I opted to go with these and I love them even more... I don't think you can go wrong with either speaker but I find these Polk speakers are "clearer" and have great sound.

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Q
Is there a way connect this directly to my TV? Or am I going to have to buy a receiver?
neil  Jan 24, 2015
4 answers
A
Neil, You don't have to own a receiver, but you will need an amplifier to get the proper amount of volume out of these speakers. You can connect your TV to the amp. Each Speaker can handle about 125 watts rms, so look for something with a rating of 75 watts rms or better, but don't exceed 125 watts rms. Thank you,
dusty  Jan 26, 2015
A
The speakers only have inputs for speaker cable. Unless you have a method to convert those into AV components or something compatible with your TV, then a receiver is the only way I know of to use these with a TV.

Hi Neil, these are excellent speakers and I love the clean sound coming out. Yes, you will need a Receiver. I have mine connected to a Niles amplifier connected to my Denon Receiver.
