Polk Audio's db Series subwoofers give you trademark Polk performance without stressing your wallet. These subs combine high-tech materials with a laser-optimized motor structure for smooth, powerful bass response.

The db1040 10" subwoofer boasts a rigid polypropylene cone and durable Santoprene™ surround. Polk Audio's rigorous product testing ensures long-lasting power and performance. Match a db sub to a suitable enclosure, and enjoy impressive low-frequency performance rarely found in this price range. And Polk certifies this sub for marine applications, so they're a great choice for your boat too.

To drive this subwoofer, we recommend a mono subwoofer amplifier that can put out between 200 and 400 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

I listen to a lot of old school r&b. Perfect for what I listen to. Subs were installed I'm my 1989 Chevy 1500. Pushed by a focal 2100 amp. For that space it's perfect.

Pros: Perfect for old school bass

Cons: Not enough punch for new school hyper bass

I love these subs! Great quality and tight sound. They are not loud and obnoxious outside the vehicle and actually provide a very tight musical sound inside for the listener. I paired 2 subs, in 2 seperate .67 sealed boxes, wired in para with sound ordinance 1500 mono amp. Don't get me wrong they can get loud, but if you want musical wide range bass performance these can handle the demand.

Pros: Tight sound

Cons: They don't include a protective grille and they're expensive to buy. This is very annoying since the piece of protective plastic is roughly 30% the cost of the sub. Not very consumer friendly.

Love It!

I think for the price and power handling these are an exellent buy (buy 1 get 1 half off in Crutchfield). I am running a pair wired in parallel on an alpine 500w RMS mono amp in a ported box and for me i dont need anymore than what these deliver. I would definatly recomend these to a friend.

Cons: The break in period seems like forever, 20-30 hrs.

I am super pleased with the quality of this woofer, I am running a boston 300 RMS amp that compliments it perfect. I have matched it up with a S/O box and it hits really clean and crisp. It is super tough material and seems to be a great buy. I have owned Woofers from Cerwin Vega to Kicker and this one can handle it's work load. I highly recommend this woofer.

Pros: no complaints here.

i bought theses while they were buy one get one half off. at that price ithin kthey are worth it. i used these to replace two cheap mtx magnums and before i even have them broken in i can tell they sound deeper and more solid. plus they look fantastic. i am very pleased with the look, build and sound quality of these speakers. i only gave 4 stars because you get what you pay for and these are not five star subs. good for the price though.

Love these subs! I installed 2 of them in a custom built 1.25cu. ft. ported box and they sound AMAZING. They deliver beautiful rich bass tones and really give you the thump you're looking for when listening to rock or hip hop. I am powering them with the Polk Audio PA400.1 amp, and it delivers just the right amount of power to really make these subs perform. Worth every penny. 5 stars in every category, only negative is that the terminals arent push terminals. Not a big deal. For the money yo0u are not going to get a better performing, better sounding sub with the versatility that the db1040 provides. Also, they need relatively little power to really get going, so the subs are easy on the wallet in both the subs directly and the amplifier. I give these subs a 10 out of 10 in this price range, you will NOT be disappointed! Read on, you will only find GREAT reviews!

Quad-Cab Dodge Ram Install

Written by: RonH from Paintsville, KY on June 23, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put two of these subs in a custom fit box under the rear seat of a 2011 quad cab ram. Was orginally going to go with kicker, but the polks better accomodated the limited airspace (~.65 cubic ft) and were able to handle more RMS power that the comps. Still in the break-in period with mine and it sounds great. Pushing them with a boston acoustic 800.1 amp.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed 2 of these in a sealed box for my brother with a pound of stuffing inside and am powering them with a 600.1 Polk Audio amp. These subs deliver more than enough bass to complement any factory stereo or wallat friendly stereo system in a vehical. I owned 2 12" versions powered by the same amp now powering his system and my 12's lasted me 6 years before the surrounds finally gave out. These subs are all he asked for and more!!! The amp is still going strong too!!!

Silverado Ext cab install

Written by: KP from Huntsville, AL on February 13, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As one would expect from Polk Audio. these 10" woofers really deliver. I installed these in my 16 year old's 2001 Silverado Extended cab using the Crutchfield "free wiring kit". These 10's put all his buddies 12" to shame. (12" are overkill for such a small area as a pickup cab) I used custom enclosures that fit like a glove. They are down firing an really give these Polks some structure. After a 20 hour break in, you can crank these Polks up to aprox 75% effiency and they are clear and defined. Absolutly no muddy sounds on the off flex. I ran these in paralle with a 2 ohm 750 w amp. Just a great speaker period. Have not run beyond 75% ( I don't want to lose my hearing) But I'm sure they will handle it. Get you a pair and you'll be happy.

Great sub for the $

Written by: Thaduke2003 from Upstate NY on October 27, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sub. The cone isn't the best looking, with a bit of a gap between parts on the front, which doesn't look particularily "cool," but I'm not in it for looks. After broken in, it pounds like a champ, but at 10", can play anything from classical to techno, classic rock to hip- hop. Great all-rounder at a KILLER price. Get the grill- looks sweet! :) Mark W.

Nice look, feel, Output

Written by: Joseph from Austin, Texas on May 9, 2010

Great shipping Crutchfield. I ordered this sub late monday night, & recieved it Friday a lil' before noon, box was in perfect condition (outside & polk box). sub sounds good especially @ the price & looks very good. Very nice deep looking cone & nice wide surround. Just make sure you have connections for the negative(female) & positive (I.D.K. what size but it is bigger that a typical female connection for a speaker.) ....regular dual female connectors wont work(maybe it's my connectors???? mine are old.........Solder or modify connector for positive... other than that the sub sounds great.

Awesome sound

Written by: Michael from Dayton, OH on March 5, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have two of these in my 95 Camaro paired up with two sets of db6501 components and a pa1100.5 amp running it all. These subs put out a major amount of bass and you can feel the air flowing through the car. And I don't even have them pushed to their full potential. They are dialed in about halfway on the amp without the extra 8db or subsonic switch turned on. These are nice durable well built speakers and I would recommend polk audio to everyone.

i have the sub installed in a .65 cu foot q logic sealed enclosure. it is in a small sedan located in the trunk behind the rear seats firing toward the back of the car. i'm giving it 200 watts rms and it sounds great. nice smooth and quick response. Quality product, i am very pleased and would recommend to anyone who wants great sound quality AND some thump to go with it.

Very Tight

Written by: Wrangler07 from 07 Wrangler on March 28, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub cause I wanted matching speakers. I have polks in the dash and sports bar. I got it in a 07 Wrangler and it sounds real tight. I made the recommended size box that they said. It passed my expectations. I made the box so the sub is firing down. I have it powered by an alpine MRP 450, its pushing 220 watts at 4 ohms. I have an alpine 9883 head unit that controls everything. Very satisfied over all.

Features

Polypropylene Cone: The cone is made with polypropylene, which provides durability while being lightweight and rigid. The cone is supported by a vented cone/coil coupler, which stiffens the cone for greater mechanical stability and lower distortion.

Santoprene Surround: The Santoprene surround is resistant to extremes in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight for excellent long term reliability.

NOMEX Spider: The fire-retardant flat NOMEX Spider allows extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability.

Triple-vented Kapton Voice Coil Former: Triple venting of the 4-layer Kapton Voice Coil Former, Cone/Coil Coupler and Pole Piece contribute to the high power handling and reliability of the db Series subs.

Klippel Laser Analyzed: The Polk db woofer's voice coil alignment, motor, and suspension are optimized using a state-of-the-art Klippel laser analyzer for superior cone travel linearity, resulting in a flatter response with lower distortion.

Break-In Period: Polk db subwoofers will achieve even greater performance once they are thoroughly broken-in. To break in a new db Sub, play music through it for 20 to 30 hours at moderate levels.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 0.66 cu/ft.

Recommended Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 1.25 cu/ft using a 4" diameter x 12" long port.

Recommended Bandpass Box Volume: Polk recommends a bandpass enclosure made of 3/4" MDF with a total internal volume of 1.65 cu/ft. The bandpass box should have a 0.80 cu/ft sealed rear chamber and a 0.85 cu/ft ported front chamber with 4" diameter x 9" long port.

The specs that they have on their website are a minimum allowed by the manufacturer. So .66 cubic feet would be a minimum allowed for that speaker. And to answer your question, yes, the .66 already includes the speaker displacement. If I were you, I'd make the box, or get a box that has closer to .75 cubic feet of air space inside.
