Leave it to Polk Audio to come up with a no-nonsense sub box that'll fill up your vehicle with bass without emptying your wallet. The db1212 enclosure combines a 12" db Series subwoofer with a rigorously engineered cabinet for chest-thumping low end from your trunk or cargo area.

Polk used extensive laser testing to optimize the internal structure of the db Series subwoofer to deliver fluid, powerful bass. The polypropylene cone and Santoprene™ surround hold up against harsh environmental effects caused by sun, moisture, and intense temperature changes, while the beefy frame ensures these subs can stand up to a pounding.

The db1212's streamlined enclosure features advanced slot ports for high speaker efficiency with reduced distortion. The silver ABS front panel gets a facelift over previous Polk enclosures, but the box still features the same internal bracing used in their stellar home speakers to reduce resonance. An eye-catching grille and tough black carpet complete the package. Just add an amplifier and wiring, and you've got one heck of a system.

Product Highlights:

  • ported enclosure with one 12" db Series subwoofer
  • 3/4" MDF construction with front-panel ABS trim

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

'Borrowed One'

I'm in the process of building my own system, and my original subwoofer setup I had was fried. My stepson let me borrow the Polk db1212 that we bought him for his birthday a few years ago. I'm running a Pioneer 150mp head unit, and a Rockford Fosgate 250w Prime mono amp @ 2 ohms (paperwork says it tested at 308 watts RMS). I have the HPF set around 125, and LPF around the same. SICK. I have to set built in EQ to 'Vocal', turn off loudness, and turn bass down, otherwise it completely blows my ears out of my head. I wish I had the $$ to pick one up for myself, but my car (and ears) can't handle it.

Pros: Crazy loud.

Cons: Too much for my Impreza Outback Sport hatchback. haha

Expectations were definitely met!

Value: great value. i recommend you purchase with crutchfield because their support and customer service is 10-fold better than the other guys. Sound Quality: im hearing bass notes that were probably only meant to be heard with a sub. Rap has definitely come alive and the warm bass it produces compliments any music you want. coldplay, dave matthews....great for everything Ease of Use: Had to spend some time adjusting things, but after my amp and radio were tuned correctly, you can potentially have almost 100% better sound from when you first turn it on, dont judge too quickly. Coolness Factor: Takes up over a 4th of my trunk and with the grill....you wont stop making people jealous and awes truck Build Quality, the cabinet is amazing, you have to see for yourself. very sturdy. doesnt move around in my trunk yet.

this is obvious, but be careful not to over power the sub.

Pros: Sound Quality, Loudness, coolness factor

Cons: nothing yet

Polk 12 Sub

Written By JR's Stang, Pearland, TX on Sunday, October 03, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this for my convertible 89 gt mustang, but would not fit in my trunk at all. I was going to order the 10' polk sub but it was nearly as big. I was going to keep this sub for my house stereo, but when i hooked it up, it did not give much bass-power as my already installed 10" powered home sub.

great boom for the buck

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For many years I have had a JBL sub that I bought from Crutchfield and it started off great but then to keep up with my needs I switched the speaker to an Infinitly and it did better.
But with the recent acquisition of my Mazdaspeed 6 I found that the insulation was much better and kept the bass from being as good as it once was....enter the Polk sub box into the equation and WOW what a difference!!!

I am not into BIG BASS for everyone else to hear but rather just "filling in" my music properly and this Polk sub more than did the job, it made my music come alive again!

I can't tell you enough how completely happy I am with this product and it has changed my mind about making other changes I felt were needed in my system as it completes my Polk system with components in front, 2 ways in the rear, and this sub to finish it off.

I recommend it highly as it truly overshoots your expectations in a package that doesn't take up my whole trunk to do it.

Alright guys wanting to add bass to your car. This sub is hands down the best bang for
your buck, period. I bought this from Crutchfield along with a 400watt kicker amp (400.1)
and this thing booms!

I thought it wouldn't be that good, but man was I wrong. I started
with an infinity basslink, and that actually dissapointed me. It wasn't what I was looking
for. So I saved a bit more money and got this. I'm afraid to turn it up more, the bass is so
clear, and hits so good im afraid it will vibrate my ears soo much i'll go deaf!

Let me also say had it not been for the crutchfield support I probably would have not
gotten this. Crutchfield is also, hands down, has the BEST customer support i have ever
seen online. They are very, very nice and helpfull. Big thanks to Taylor, Mac,Chad,
Conrad, and that one person! (forgot who it was) that helped me get the last few kinks
out of my installation.

So overall if you're looking to add bass to your car, but not wanting to drain your bank, go
for this. I say, at least TRY it. If you don't like it send it back. But try it, I think youll fall in
love with it like me. Thanks again crutchfield. I will continue to do business with you.

Awesome sound and quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently had this sub installed in my car with the matching Polk PA40.1 which is an amazing value considering I ordered the Sub/Enclosure/Amp for a great price. I have polk 6.5 db components in the front doors and polk db 6x9s in the rear deck powered by an mtx thunder 704x. The quality of sound with the system is amazing. I have the low pass at 80Hz for the sub and high pass at 80Hz for the full range speakers and the speakers complement each other very nicely. Amp and sub provide plenty of power and impact with natural sounding bass. I have a streetwires 1 Farad Capacitor installed as well so I do not see any headlight/dashboard dimming.

Overall, this is an affordable package for someone who wants high quality accurate bass you can feel.

Slammin', Accurate Sub in A Space-Efficient Package

Written By Solamon, Claremont, CA on Thursday, August 27, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub along with the optional matching amp, the PA 400.1, which can be bought at a discounted price if purchased together with the sub. The two make up a great looking, great sounding, affordable package. The best thing about this sub is its bang for buck: Crutchfield's price can't be beat, and the sub is just as good as any single-voice-coil 12" sub on the market. Another high note: the enclosure is well-built, and comes with the well-drilled grille for stylish, built-in protection. I am running this in a 2007 Mazdaspeed3, a compact car, but love the fact that I get plenty of boom and still have more than half of my trunk available. My sub is controlled through the JVC KD-S100 head unit, which pushes plenty of power and adds extra clarity through the Bongiovi Acoustics sound processor-- that may account for the excellent sound quality I am hearing. You'll notice that when this sub is powered to a maximum level, it can knock as hard as two lower quality 10s or 12s. The only reason I am not giving a full 5-star rating is that this sub is only single-voice-coil, so you cannot hear as many mids through it as you would through a dual voice-coil- sub, such as the excellent Rockford Fosgate P2. Otherwise, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase from Crutchfield, a retailer always looking out with great brands, legitimate warranty provisions, and the best prices on hot products.

Great Sub, Accurate Sound

I am powering this sub with the PA400.1 mono sub amplifier and it sounds
fantastic. It is plenty loud to fill my 2007 Accord Sedan with rich LFEs.

Great sub

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub with the amp that is on special. I was iffy on the buy since the woofer can put out more than the amp can provide but I was blown away. This sounds great! It has enough power for what I want. If you want everyone to hear the bass inside and out I'd go for the dual setup that's available from Crutchfield but this really has bang for the buck.

This speaker sounds great! I bought it with the Polk MOMO C500.1, and got a really good deal on the two. I put them in the trunk of my camry and it hits really hard, very low distortion too especially for the price.

Product Research

Overview: The Polk Audio DB1212 is a bass-reflex enclosure loaded with one 12" Polk db subwoofer.

Enclosure: The DB1212 features a vented-enclosure covered in high-grade black carpet and features an ABS front-baffle and ABS grille.

  • Construction: Polk uses 3/4-inch MDF with Internal bracing. The front baffle is clad in automotive grade ABS trim for rigidity and resistance to impact. A sheet of elastomeric damping material isolates the ABS trim from the baffle as it acts as a sealing gasket for the woofers. This tri-laminate sandwich construction prevents unwanted rattles and resonance, ensuring bass that's as tight as it is powerful.
  • Shape: The enclosure's back panel is angled, resulting in a greater depth at the bottom of the enclosure than at the top. The angled design allows the enclosure to fit nicely against the back of the angled rear seat in many cars. The front of the enclosure is slightly curved.
  • Bass Reflex: The enclosure utilizes a side-firing slot-vent for higher bass output with vastly lower noise and distortion compared to conventional ports.
  • Grilles: Wheel-style heavy-duty ABS grille protects the woofer from shifting cargo. Grille and baffle may be painted to match the vehicle's interior color.
  • Binding Posts: The spring terminal binding posts will accept bare wire up to 11 gauge, pin connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs. When using banana plugs they're inserted into the same opening as bare wire. The DB1212 s wired for a 2-ohm load at the enclosure's speaker terminals.

12" Woofer: The DB1212 comes loaded with a single 12-inch, dual 4-ohm voice coil Polk Audio db subwoofers wired in parallel for a 2-ohm mono load the enclosure's speaker terminals.

  • Polypropylene Cone: The cone is made with polypropylene, which provides durability while being lightweight and rigid. The cone is supported by a vented cone/coil coupler, which stiffens the cone for greater mechanical stability and lower distortion.
  • Santoprene Surround: The Santoprene surround is resistant to extremes in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight for excellent long term reliability.
  • NOMEX Spider: The flat NOMEX Spider allows extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability.
  • Triple-vented Kapton Voice Coil Former: Triple venting of the 4-layer Kapton Voice Coil Former, Cone/Coil Coupler and Pole Piece contribute to the high power handling and reliability of the db Series subs.
  • Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils. The voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, so the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load at the enclosure's speaker terminal.
