Give your music new life

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's db501 speakers are engineered to fit 5" openings, featuring 4" polymer/mica woofers with durable rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under stress from heat, moisture, or time. Liquid-cooled 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction, enveloping you in bright musical detail. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

Whether you've got a factory radio or an aftermarket stereo, these efficient speakers will spice up your daily drive. And Polk certifies their db Series speakers for marine applications, so they're a great choice for your boat, motorcycle, or ATV.

I installed these in my 2004 Goldwing and they are awesome! I did have to modify the basket a little bit to fit (ie cut the mount slot ends off and adding washers to the mounting bolts) other than that they mounted easily. There is a much improved sound over the cheap factory speakers.

Pros: Very good sound from such a small speaker.

Cons: Not a direct fit but easy modification makes them work well.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was easy, the sound is noticeably better even without an amp, and the price wasn't too high.

Pros: Good full sound without having to use the fader. Comes with instructions and harness. Price (especially on sales).

Cons: Will need to buy slide connectors to finish the job.

I installed 4 speakers in my 2004 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. The difference in sound is truly amazing. The highs are so much clearer and the bass is very good for a speaker this small.

Pros: No clearance problems.

Cons: Slightly smaller than original speakers. I had to open up the mounting slots and use small fender washers to mount them. Not a big deal at all.

Great addition to my 93 GL1500 GoldWing. Yes the corners needed to be trimmed but that was easy. They sound great considering they are running on a 22 year old Honda stereo that never sounded that great to begin with.

Pros: 5" speaker that fits my GoldWing dash.

Cons: Is needing to trim the corners to fit my screw pattern really a con? Not for me but you decide. =/

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Look carefully at the dimensions; he cone size and bolt pattern is the same as 4" speakers. In fact, the 4" JBL & Infinity "Plus One" size speakers have bigger cones than these. Additionally, the Polk bolt pattern is too small to reach the Toyota 5" speaker bolt pattern. Again, in comparison, the 4" JBL or Infinity (advertised as a smaller speaker) have open ended slots that DO allow them to fit the Toyota 5" speaker pattern! Interesting marketing by Polk... I fell for it while quickly looking for something to replace my decaying OEM Toyota 5" speakers. Finally, as to expected by their small size, the low end bass was disappointing compared to the larger 5" OEM Toyota or the JBL / Infinity Plus size speakers. Thank you Crutchfield for the excellent customer service and return policy.

Pros: None. OEM speakers were better.

Cons: Not 5" speakers. Other Plus One size 4" speakers are actually bigger. Bass response was severely lacking. High frequency response was overly bright.

1990 Lexus LS400
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk db501 speakers look and sound beautiful. They really improved the overall audio characteristics, especially by cleaning up the mid notes and reducing the "tinniness" of the stock tweeters. Unexpectedly, they were not an exact fit for my Lexus LS400 even though they were listed as such - the screw slots weren't long enough. However, by clipping off the end of each slot, they fit perfectly, and now I couldn't be happier with them. Too bad they don't fit in the rear doors, too - I'd be happy picking up a second set.

Pros: Excellent sound, excellent looks and worth every penny

Cons: Not an exact fit for my Lexus LS400

Good speakers. wrong recommended size.

Written by: Alexn from California on March 30, 2015

The gentlemen that helped me out, only thing is that the speakers were to small and the harness that was given with it did not clip in with the OEM harness. It seemed like he was so sure and trusted the team that did the fitment test for the rear speaker size for my subaru wagon cause I asked him if he was sure. it was so small i could fit the speaker all the way through the speaker housing.

Pros: Great speakers.

Cons: WRONG SIZE, Nice try.

Crutchfield response on April 1, 2015 According to our database, those speakers should indeed fit the rear doors of your Impreza. However, you need to use the brackets that held the factory speakers in place. Those are likely still attached to your factory speakers. Remember, as a Crutchfield customer, you have access to our free tech support service. They're just a phone call away and can help with problems like this while you still have the door panels off of the car!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am thoroughly impressed by how powerful these speakers are. They have a very clean crisp sound. I replaced the old stock speakers from my '96 Toyota Corolla and these speakers are exponentially better. I know I was replacing almost 20 year old speakers, however I can now hear the music over the road noise of an almost 20 year old car. I am very impressed.

Pros: Clean and crisp sound. Better all around speakers

Cons: Everyone complains about there is no bass but what do you expect from a 5" speaker.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After ordering, I worried that these wouldn't be enough for my Avalon, was thinking I should have ordered 6" speakers instead. But I installed these anyhow, and couldn't be happier. Great sound, with good bass response even without a subwoofer.

Pros: Price, ease of installation with existing wiring

Cons: The holes don't completely line up with existing holes from 1997 Avalon factory speakers. But still easy enough to install by drilling new holes.

Dangerously powerful speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers pack quite a punch. my 300/4 channel amp from JL Audio may have poisoned my previous speakers with too much power(or they were outright defective), but for the size these little monsters deliver impecable sound quality and durability than can survive a reasonably powered system ( no 1000w amps here). combined with 5.25 inch rear deck speakers of the same brand, i get a beautiful field of sound with power balanced to clarity and succinct sound precision. to say the least these were a steal using the outlet store option with an incredible 40 bucks off the top.

Pros: great loud sound , resilient performance, vibrant quality and clarity. THEY LEAVE VERY LITTLE TO BE DESIRED!!!

Cons: tweeters tweet just a little too hard {noticeable high frequency knocks at sound levels that can damage your hearing anyway].

Written by: CrazyCarl from Northern VA on April 26, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well made speakers that install easily on 2004 Frontier. Edge of screw holes need to be clipped but metal is soft enough standard nippers work great. Included wiring harness for t-shape connector makes rest of install easy. Speakers are still breaking in but you know anything will be better than the stock foam surround with paper cones.

Pros: Easy to install and sounds good.

Cons: Little bit of customizing needed but nothing anyone with simple tools can't handle.

Installed these in the back doors of my 03 Nissan Frontier and the sound was awesome! I am not using an amp to power them at all. I just have a double-din Pioneer stereo that I also installed myself. Chatted on the online chat with Jenny and she recommended this set plus the 6 1/2" for my front doors. Those sound great too! She also found that it was saving me $$ because when I bought this set the other ones came half off! So it fit my budget and truck just right!!

Pros: Everything good and installation was easy!

1993 Volvo 240 Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Polk DB series speakers for my 93 Volvo 240 sedan. Unfortunately the stock size speakers are only 4" front and 5" rear. I did not expect much sound or volume from such a small package. After doing some light customizing to get them fitting properly, I fired them up powering them only with my new Kenwood X695 radio. Wow! I can't believe how much sound comes from these tiny speakers! I added an MTX powered sub while I was re-doing my stereo for some thump in the trunk. These speakers keep their clarity even at high volumes, and reallyperform wonderfully even with just the Kenwood receiver powering them.

Pros: Great sound even with the small size. (I used 4" and 5" coax) Speakers have an excellent fit and finish. I even used the included grills for my front speakers.

Cons: None!

I am very pleased with my recent speaker purchase. After wonderful customer service over the phone, I took Tyler's recommendation and selected these. They were as easy to install as he had said-with great instructions- and sound sooo much better than my previous ones. I didn't replace the back ones only because of the age and mileage of my car. 92 Toyota 4Runner - Yes, it does fit!

Written by: BrianC from Dallas, TX on March 23, 2011

The "outfit my car" guide says the back panels in my old 4Runner require 5 1/4" speakers, but when I tried to install them, they were too big and I found the previous replacements were 4". I measured them and found the hole to be 5 inches!!! NOTE: This is when putting them in the original ported, amped, boxes that are still in place. These work perfectly! I hope they correct the guide for all those old 4Runners that are still on the road. As far as the sound, they are limited on bass, but what do you expect from 5" speakers. I have matching 4" up front and the sound is clean and accurate; just as I'd hoped. I can always at a subwoofer later.

Installed these in the fairing of my '03 Goldwing in less than 1/2 hour, very close fit with minimal alterations. The basket on the 501's is a little smaller than the Honda speakers, so the ends of the holes needed to be clipped out. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pros: Great value. Very easy to install in rear doors of 2004 Nissan Frontier. It took maybe 45 mins. for both sides. I used the Nissan grilles. These speakers sound great paired with the Polk db 651's up front. They are hooked up to a Clarion head unit. No amplification. These speakers sound as good as any aftermarket speakers I've owned (I've bought way too many - anyone remember Cricket?). You can't beat these for the price. I also highly recommend Crutchfield's Outlet. I saved 10 or fifteen bucks just because the speakers had been opened. Cons: None - do your homework - and you won't be disappointed (Crutchfield's comparison feature is incredibly useful).

May be great, but I'll never know

Written by: James from Near Greenville, SC on March 3, 2009

These may be great speakers, buy I'll never know. Contrary to what the Crutchfield site says, they do not fit in the front doors of a 1991 Audi 200 with a factory Bose system. That car has an amplified speaker enclosure in each front door, with a recess for a 4" speaker with three mounting holes in a triangular arrangement. The Polks have four mounting holes in a square arrangement. There is no way to make a square speaker fit down into the triangular recess. Removing the entire speaker enclosure is not an option as that would leave no place to mount the speaker.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs. The tweeters use neodymium magnets.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.
