Our take on the Polk Audio db6500

Dreaming about better sound in your car audio system? Do you want lows that are full and definitive? Highs that resonate with clarity? Stop dreaming! Polk's db Series db6500 component system uses 6-1/2" Dynamic Balance polymer/mica woofers to produce full, rich lows that are free of detail-robbing distortion. Rubber surrounds, Kapton voice coil formers, and pole plate heat sinks protect the woofers against the stresses of heat and time.

The liquid-cooled silk/polymer composite tweeters can be mounted in either flush- or surface-mount cups to project detailed highs where you want to hear them. The two-way crossover networks (4,000 Hz, 12 dB/octave) ensure smooth, well-balanced output, with built-in protection circuitry to guard your tweeters against accidental damage from high power. And you don't have to limit these speaker systems to your car — they've passed tough environmental testing that certifies them for marine use as well.

Woofers

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Marine Certified Woofers: Polk db Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Formers: The low-mass 2-Layer 1" Kapton Voice Coil formers are lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature ensures high power handling and excellent reliability.

Pole Plate Heat Sinks: The pole plate heat sinks promote better heat dissipation for superior power handling and reliability.

Tweeters

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

Marine Certified Tweeters: Polk db Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface- or flush-mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel in the flush-mount housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

  Surface Mount Flush Mount
Mounting Height 1.006" 0.188"
Depth 0.919" (screw depth) 1.045"
Frame Diameter 1.988" 2.289"
Cutout Diameter   N/A 2.041"

Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: Each crossover features a 12dB/octave, 4kHz high-pass network for the tweeter and a 12dB/octave, 4kHz low-pass network for the woofer.

Electronic Tweeter Protection Circuits: Each crossover has a built-in protection circuit that guards the tweeter against accidental damage from high power.

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

Crossover Dimensions: L=5.014", W=3.097", H=1.217"

I absolutely love
these. These
tweeters are very
tinny, and have to
turn them down, but
once adjusted they
are very very nice.
these are powered by
a 100 watt amp and
couldnt really ask

excellent speakers

Written By mike, merrimack, nh on Saturday, December 08, 2007

These speakers are in a 2007 subaru outback, replacing the mediocre stock speakers. There is a huge improvement in sound at all frequencies. It took a little while to get used to the highs put out by these speakers, but after some adjustments on the new alpine deck and time to get used to hearing such high notes, I have grown to appreciate the range these speakers have. Mid-range is very good and lows are improved but could be better (I don't have a sub-woofer). Overall, I would definitely recommend these speakers!

a step or two up

Written By John, Portland OR on Saturday, December 08, 2007

Definately happy I picked this one for my 07 Sonata. Bass is deeper and the highs are clearer. Unfortunately since my car doesnt have an amp in it, I'm not getting the full experience, but it still sounds better than stock ya feel me. Cant wait till I get my subs and vid screen to go along with this ish.

So Far, So Good

Written By Art, Keyport, NJ on Monday, November 12, 2007

I recently added these to the front of my Dodge SRT-4 and they sound great. They are clean and smooth. The highs are crisp and clear without harshness or distortion. They are rated at 100 Watts RMS and I will soon be installing an amp putting out 80 Watts RMS per channel, so we shall see. The speakers themselves appear to be high quality. I flush-mounted the tweeters into the sail panels on my front doors and they look factory. Don't expect them to produce booming low-end bass; they are not made for that (that's what a sub-woofer does). They provide adaquate mid-bass. I am very happy with them so far. I have Polk dB 6x9s in the rear which compliment them perfectly. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a decent component set without spending too much cash. I also recommend buying them from crutchfield since they have great customer service and they provide you with the necessary mounting brackets, wiring harnesses, and detailed instuctions, all for FREE, and with FREE SHIPPING if you spend over a certain amount.

Awesome sound and Great price !

Written By Rolf, Maple Shade , NJ on Friday, November 09, 2007

I just installed 2 set's of these in my 2001 Chevy Suburban . Man what a difference ! No more muddled or muffled sound from stock speakers . I can hear backgrounds in my music that I didn't know existed . I listen to just about everything from Rock to Classical , not much for Country though (Johnny Cash is great) Real nice crisp clean sound hooked up to my Alpine CDA-9883 H.U. , without an amp even but I'm planning on putting one in eventually . Easy to hook up and mount with all the included hardware from Crutchfield . Don't wate any longer , replace your factory speakers now ! I gave these speakers 4 out of 5 because there is always something better , somewhere , but for price I don't think these could be beat .

Surprisingly good

Written By Paul, Morristown TN on Tuesday, October 30, 2007

I mounted these in my 95 F150 with a Pioneer 3900 head unit and have been very impressed with the detail, full sound, and impressive bass response. I listen to jazz, classical, and contemporary music and have heard details in familiar tracks that I never heard before. I understand lyrics in songs that were previously garbled. These speakers easily overcome road noise even in this old squeaky truck. I have been surprised that classic rock and metal tunes come across convincingly with these 6.5 inch woofers. I can rattle my doors with no obvious distortion. Just a really nice sound. Glad I bought these.
Re: service: I consulted with Ringo prior to the purchase and am very happy with his solid advice. The shipping dept destroyed my first set ordered from "scratch and dent" by sending them without proper packaging. However, they sent me a new stock replacement set immediately using overnight shipping at their expense. I simply couldn't ask for better service.

Should have bought them sooner

Written By Porsche928, Central PA on Monday, October 29, 2007

I'm an Infinity guy and I swear by their subs, but after reading so many terrible reviews on the reference components and their super-harsh tweeters, I decided to stray from Infinity and see what Polk had to offer and I haven't regretted it. I've had a sub in my car (not the 928) for a while and while the deep bass was there, something was missing and it became obvious once I installed the Polks. The top end brightened up and for the first time in my car, I had midbass! The stock speaker was a 4x6 so I had to fabricate new mounts out of MDF, but it was worth the time and effort to get these in. You get so much more sound out of a large round speaker than a small oval one. I thought the highs were just a bit bright, but this is nothing an EQ can't fix. A lot of people say these things need an amp, but I found they do quite well off my Pioneer head unit. The fact that you can relocate the tweeters (if you so choose) is wonderful. Now, I no longer have tweeters firing into my legs and the sound is the same whether or not I have a passenger in the car. Last week I was reading these rave reviews and today I'm writing one. Like someone else said, if your car has 6.5" holes, buy these speakers, and if it doesn't, get out the rotozip and start cutting!

Major Upgrade

Written By Knightmare, Syracuse, NY on Monday, October 22, 2007

I put these in my 2005 Subaru Legacy Limited for the front doors. The stock speakers were surrounded by cardboard! and made of junk paper, and a plastic basket with tiny magnets. The tweeters werre also plastic, even the cones! I SWEAR TO THIS, total garbage stock speakers.

When I installed these the difference was night and day, however A MAJOR RECOMMENDATION TO ALL is to plug the subs into the full range cable and not the sub out on the crossover, and then put the tweeters on the tweeter out of the crossover. that way the subs fill the low AND the midrange, and the tweeters get the highs, this gave my music a much FULLER sound rather then super highs and some lows.

Awesome Component Speakers

Written By James, Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, September 29, 2007

I bought these based on the reviews from others. I put them in my 1991 Acura Integra Hatchback. Let me just say that the sound blows away my previous Polk Audio Component speakers that I purchased over 8 years ago. Reason for replacing them was because one tweeter was dead. However prior to that happening it started to sound like it was making a hissing noise and made the music sound bad, but only on one side. Anyways I should have replaced them long ago, but didn't until recently with these components. They are powerful, and sound so much better and are very crisp. I have to turn done the treble control, because it is very sharp in making high frequency sound. I can't believe I paid $250 for the old setup and it didn't even sound like these speakers. Crutchfield has done very well with carrying these components. If you need replacements buy these. Good sound at an affordable price. Go Polk Audio!
