Polk performance

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's versatile db6501 component speaker system features 6-1/2" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under stress from heat, moisture, or time. Liquid-cooled 1" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction, enveloping you in bright musical detail. You can surface- or flush-mount the tweeters with the included swivel-mount cups. Just aim the tweeters so they broadcast toward your ears, creating a powerful stereo image.

External crossovers direct the right frequencies to the tweeters and woofers to maximize their performance, and their housings let you hide all wiring for a clean, professional look. These speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior. And Polk certifies their db Series speakers for marine applications, so they're a great choice for your boat, motorcycle, or ATV.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Woofers

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Formers: The low-mass 2-Layer 1" Kapton Voice Coil formers are lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature ensures high power handling and excellent reliability.

Pole Plate Heat Sinks: The pole plate heat sinks promote better heat dissipation for superior power handling and reliability.

Mounting Ring: The supplied mounting ring has mounting holes for both 6-1/2" and 6-3/4" applications, including GM/Chrysler 6-3/4G, allowing the speaker to fit more vehicles. In most cases, the ring should be used to mount the speaker.

Tweeters

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs.

Mounting: The supplied mounting cups allow you to surface- or flush-mount the tweeters. The tweeters swivel in the flush-mount housings, allowing you to adjust them for optimum imaging.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

  Surface Mount Flush Mount
Mounting Height 1.046" 0.364"
Depth 0.825" (screw depth) 0.938"
Frame Diameter 2.002" 2.297"
Cutout Diameter N/A 1.951"
Crossovers

2-Way Crossovers: Each Butterworth outboard crossover features a 12dB/octave high-pass network for the tweeter and a 12dB/octave low-pass network for the woofer.

Tweeter Attenuation Switch: You can adjust the output of the tweeter to match a level appropriate to your vehicle or your system. On the end of crossover (opposite the terminals), the tweeter attenuation switch can be set to 0dB, -3dB, or +3dB.

Electronic Tweeter Protection Circuits: Each crossover has a built-in protection circuit that guards the tweeter against accidental damage from high power.

Crossover Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are screw terminals. The crossover housing is vented, giving you a choice of hidden wire channels for easier, more professional-looking installs.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

Crossover Dimensions: L=5.029", W=3.072", H=1.075"

Q
IS Polk DB6501 fitted in Maruti Baleno Alpha front door ?
prakash  Apr 20, 2017

A
I don't believe we have researched that vehicle, if it is not sold in the U.S. we probably won't have any information. Otherwise I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question.

Q
Will these work as a replacement in the concert audio saddle bags of a 2016 indian roadmaster?
greg  Jun 25, 2016
1 answer
A
We do not research all motorcycles for radio & speaker fit. The 6.5" midbass drivers are a standard size and should fit a factory 6.5" speaker mount that has an available depth of around 2" or more. The crossovers and separate tweeters would require custom mounting. The tweeters do come packaged with both surface & flush mount brackets to help with the installation. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the speaker's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. Q
Do I need an amp to power these? Or can I just run them off the head unit
chris  May 09, 2016
2 answers
A
You can run them off your head unit but they will be seriously under powered I would suggest an app that is capable of pushing enough power to them. If you do decide to just use the head unit that will not hurt the speakers and they will still sound good, but they will never live up to your full expectations.
shawn  May 13, 2016
A
YEs you can run it either way

what is needed for mounting depth? My window doesnt give me much clearance.

The 6.5" midbass drivers have a top mount depth of 1.9". You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the speaker's main webpage and scrolling down to the "Features & Specs" table. You can also see if they are a recommended fit in your vehicle by using the "Outfit My Car" application on the main Crutchfield website here: http://www.crutchfield.com/car/carselector.aspx?lp=%2fCar%2foutfitmycar%2fcar.aspx I hope that helps! Will these speakers sound good on 40 watts or do they need more power?

Install them in my 2001 Silverado with factory head unit and I am extremely pleased with the sound quality.

Nends more power. They definitely sounds better than stock, but at higher volume levels get distorted.

I have been using these speakers in a jeep connected directly to the radio without amplifier and sound quality is very good. Good luck. Gilberto
gilberto  Dec 21, 2015
A
really nice speakers and 40 would fine. I ran mine with a Rockford fosgate p300x2. Sounded amazing in my 370z. They love to be pushed hard and really come alive at the higher wattage so if you are running an amp I'd look at a bigger amp for a cleaner signal at 40 watts.

Q
What size sealed speaker box (cubic inch) would enhance the performance of these db6501s?
maria  Jul 24, 2015
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Polk db6501s model of speakers is free air rated so they don't have a cubic feet measurement recommended. They are rated as such so they can sound good in all types of vehicles with all different cubic feet measurements for the door. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
I just got these components for my 2011 Cruze. I will be using an Alpine power pack bridged to feed 90 watts to each channel. Where do I install the crossover box? Should the speaker wires be run on one side of the car? How do I run the speaker wire from the tweeter in the A-pillar to the woofer at the door?
jon  Feb 07, 2015
2 answers
A
Well I install my tweeter in the door of a 1968 Camaro and the crossover box were install in the trunk with the woofer, as for the speaker you can run the wire from the A-pillar to the door, and put the wires in the boot for door locks or power window ......I hope that help .
paul  Feb 09, 2015
A
The x-over has 3 pairs of connections. The amplifier connects to the "input", the tweeter and woofer then would connect to their appropriate labeled connections. You will probably have to install your own wires between the x-over and the speakers. Unless you can locate the factory wires at a common location. Be sure to locate the x-overs in a dry place, not inside the car doors.

What rear speakers and amp would b compatible with these speakers. Also which steering wheel adapter would you recommend?

As far as which speakers to pair them with I can't help you talk to an advisor they would be able to but add far as steering wheel controls if you use a factory adapter when installing a new head unit most of them will have a plug for a programmable switch.

Hi Robert, My system for a 2000 Mustang GE Convertible consists of the following Polk Audio db5251 5-1/4" Component System Polk Audio db6501 6-1/2" Component System Clarion XC1410 Compact 4-channel car amplifier - 50 watts RMS x 4 105KDAHD79 JVC ARSENAL KD-AHD79 CD HD Receiver lots of wire and cables I'm thrilled with the system. My car is doesn't have steering wheel controls and that's why I liked the fob-CD-receiver control that came with the JVC Arsenal receiver. The AMP is small in size and big in power. I took my time installing everything and rewiring the system over a long Thanksgiving weekend. Love it!

I went with the db651 rear speakers and am happy with the sound. I cannot answer your question about the amp and steering wheel adapter as I did not change those components. My amp is built into my receiver.

Q
Hi, I'm wondering if there is a way to get the harshness/shrill out of these tweeters. The 6.5's sound great with power but these tweets are killing me. I have the crossover set at -3 db but it wasn't enough. If I turn the gain on the amp down, it slightly helps but then the 6.5s want that power back. Even in my eq on the head unit doesn't get that shrill/brightness out. I'm tempted to give up and try to find some warmer tweets but if I can save money and get these tweets sounding right the better. ?

Q
Is this 100 rms watts per speaker or that's for the entire pair?
aaron  Dec 26, 2013
5 answers
A
It is 100 watts rms for each channel. 100 for the tweeter and mid on the right side and 100 for the tweeter and mid on the left side. I ran them off the deck only at first, and was not impressed, but once I put an amp to them, they sounded great.
chris  Dec 26, 2013
A
Power Handling: Peak: 600 watts per set / 300 watts each side RMS: 200 watts per set / 100 watts each side
mark  Dec 26, 2013
A
To be clear, let's call it 100W rms per channel. One channel consists of two drivers: mid/bass driver and tweeter. Together, they can handle 100W rms. They are not set up to bi-amp from the factory, but if you had an electronic cross-over, you could do it...just don't know what rating is for each driver. Does that help?
michael a  Dec 26, 2013
A
The RMS wattage is per speaker. I have a 4x100 amp running mine. Each speaker has it's own channel so the fade and balance still work like stock. The set up sounds great!
michael  Dec 26, 2013
A
It's is per speaker.
joshua  Dec 26, 2013
Q
can I mount the tweeter in the center of the grill, like a momo system?
mike  Dec 20, 2013
2 answers
A
The speaker isn't built to be mounted that way but you can do it. The tweeter will sit in the sunken front of the grill and you will either need to come up with your own mounting clips or hot glue the tweeter to the frame. If you are planning on leaving it exposed, it might not have a finished look unless you plan on doing some creative finishing with paint or fiberglass.
frank  Dec 20, 2013
A
Probably but not without risking the structural integrity of the grille and speaker. I don't think its worth the risk. There are other speakers available that are designed that way. Return them and order new onet. Cruthfield is very helpful when you clearly describe what you want to do.
