Our take on the Polk Audio db651s

by Leigh Schoettinger
Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's db651s shallow-mount speakers feature 6-1/2" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that stand up to heat and moisture. Liquid-cooled 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction. With a 2" mounting depth, these speakers can fit into some tight places. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

These speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior.

  • 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers for shallow mounts

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs. The tweeters use neodymium magnets.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles are based on exclusive MOMO designs.

Great Little Speaker

Written By David, Kansas City, MO on Sunday, March 23, 2014

I installed these to replace some old JBL GTO speakers I have had for some time, which I used to replace my factories when they pop with my new head unit in my 02 Wrangler, and they did not disappoint. Very clear and crisp highs and mids. Bass response however is only fair to midland, I would like to hear a little more boom from them. That said, for what it is, it sounds really good as all Polk speakers should. The only real complaint I have is cosmetic. While it does come with a rubber gasket to seal the speaker to your installation, the trim ring they include is a little lack luster, it's all plastic with have a hole that rests between the speaker and the ring. If you over tighten the screw it pulls right though the plastic. You do have three dedicated mounting screws that are under the trim ring, so how tight you need to tighten the last 4 screws is up to you. As I had to make some new holes in the sound bar in my jeep I elected to use my drill and the self-taping screws. I only over tightened one, but if you're not careful, it is possible. Overall I will be buy this series again.
Pros:
Clean look. Excellent packaging, plenty of hardware to assist in your install. Very clear and loud sound.
Cons:
Not a lot of boom maybe after they break in it will get better, Plastic rings should a better mounting system.

Nice sound, needs support

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think the speakers have a nice balance for highs and mid range. They are lacking bass response and need a subwoofer to support them. Amplification will help produce a clearer fuller sound out of these speakers.
Pros:
Nice highs and mid-range Fit many vehicles with limited space
Cons:
Lacking bass response A decent amount of power is required to produce a full sound

db651s speakers

Written By Neil L, Harrisonburg on Saturday, March 15, 2014

Polk has always been a top notch speaker and my pair of db651s speakers are absolutely top notch. Did I mention Marine certified? With some fine tuning on your EQ you can achieve amazing sound quality. These speakers are not bass pounding speakers, do keep that in mind. They are crystal clear on vocals, mids, and highs. Throw in a nice subwoofer and you will be amazed! I recommend Polk to all my friends and I recommend them to you as well. You will be completely happy.
Pros:
Marine certified Amazing clarity Tough build
Cons:

As expected

Written By AllenD, Northern Kentucky on Thursday, March 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Large magnet, similar to the sub in my CRZ EX. I don't notice too much of a difference unless bass and volume are turned way up. Installing MLV in my car's roof, floor, sides, and doors soon, which should help. Highly recommened for anyone who wants an inexpensive upgrade from their stock speakers.
Pros:
Easy install, solid build quality, magnet size, plug n play (for me)
Cons:
Not sure how well the plastic will hold up in the long run (15+ years), and if anything else, then the wiring option seems to be not permanent but solid and tight. After some bass for a few years I'll have check and see if the plugs are still good.

Great replacement speaker

Written By Bill in PA, Wayne, Pa on Monday, February 10, 2014

I replaced the front stock Bose speakers in my '05 Acura MDX. The Bose use paper cones and very small magnets. The Polks use a poly cone, huge magnet, and built in cross-over circuitry. They sound great! I can definitely hear the difference, especially at louder volumes. The only issue I had was in the mounting: The adapter brackets from Crutchfield were too thick, causing the speakers to stick out too far, and the speaker grilles wouldn't snap back in. I ended up screwing the speakers directly into the plastic part of the door panel. Secured them fine with no vibration. Buy these speakers!
Pros:
Great mid and high range. Very clear sound. Easy to mount. Waterproof!
Cons:
None.

Polk audio speakers

Written By Tanner, Green Bay, Wi on Wednesday, January 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just picked up these speakers and installed them in my 1999 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab. They sound great, really clear on the highs and mids! They excite you on the lows or bass though, they are not designed for that, but paired with a nice sub and you will really enjoy them and will be a great addition to complete your whole system! I have a 8inch Bazooka sub ported running 250 watts, I'm really impressed with that too, especially for only 250 watts. I recommend these to anyone wanting to be able to hear the full range of sound of music. I am planning on buying a 4 channel alpine amp, at 45 watts to each channel to power these and more polk audio speakers in the rear doors of my truck (4x6inch plate). The speakers overall are made with very good craftsmanship and with only the best materials on all parts of the speaker, I looked into the best materials that could be used to make a coaxial speaker like this and they were exactly the same for each area of it.
Pros:
High range sound Easy install Mid range sound
Cons:
better bass than stock paper speakers but not overwhelming with addition of a subwoofer or 2 can be an amazing combination

Impressive!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For an inexpensive shallow mount 6 1/2" coax, these truly are impressive! Put 4 in my daughter's car, running off the head unit amp. Depth was identical to the OEM speakers, and they seem like a really well made product given their price point. They are efficient and reproduce sound quite well. Highly recommend for an inexpensive OEM replacement.
Pros:
Size mimics OEM Sound quality Efficient
Cons:
None

good value, lacking in bass clarity

Written By Rich, northeast OH on Tuesday, January 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK value for the money. High quality craftsmanship and attention to details. Good packaging ensures no damage to contents. Generic fastener kit OK, understandably cannot be all things to all people. Vocal and highs reproduction great. Delivers nice quality with classical and jazz. However, bass gets muddy and lacks bottom end drive with rock, soul, etc. I believe would work nicely with low pass filter and separate sub woofer.
Pros:
fit and finish, very defined and clear mids and highs
Cons:
muddy bass

Written By Avalanche Guy, Illinois on Monday, January 06, 2014

Bought these for a factory radio and speaker upgrade for a 2002 Avalanche based on a Crutchfield advisor's recommendation. Bought the first pair for the front doors only and liked them so well that I turned around and ordered another pair for the rear doors. Great sound and they are a night and day difference from the worn out factory speakers. Installation in the doors was super easy after watching a video on door panel removal.
Pros:
Sound great at mid volume ranges.
Cons:

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great sounding speakers. After installing in my son's car, I was really impressed by the sound these put out. However, the cable connections were terrible. Polk needs to manufacture speakers with easier connections - I was very disappointed with the wire connections.
Pros:
Great sound. Really good bass and crisp.
Cons:
Speaker wire connections were terrible.

Great replacement speaker

Written By JJ, Bayamon, Puerto Rico on Monday, November 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great replacement speaker but mounting holes are too close to the speaker corners. It fits perfectly the factory housing. Don't expect too much bass response from these speakers; it's size (6 1/2" diameter) doesn't give too much room for bass performance, unless you buy a expensive speaker or a separate sub-woofer.
Pros:
Factory size fits perfectly. Good for Hi and Mid frequencies.
Cons:
Mounting holes are too close to the speaker corners. Bass (or Low frequencies) performance.

Rocks my Lexus

Written By Shane P, Springfield, MO on Thursday, November 07, 2013

By far the best speakers I've ever owned! as always Crutchfied was a breeze to work with making everything easy. Installation was quick and easy. The sound is just amazing. The highs and mids are just amazing. They produce a clear, warm, full sound with an amazing depth of range. I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone look to add some upper range to their system since they are designed not to handle much bass. I'm impressed
Pros:
Warm, Clear, Clean, Deep sound that far exceeded expectation. Looks amazing, durable and are the best speakers in their price range for sure.
Cons:
The screw mounting holes are to close to the rubber surround on the speaker so the mounting screw touch the speaker it's self.

Sound Great in Jeep

Written By S, Fairmont, WV on Monday, November 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to fit in the front doors of my '99 Cherokee (XJ). Installation took about 5 minutes or less for me. Hardest part is pulling door panel, which is easy. Wiring was a breeze, only two wires. The speaker itself fit perfectly in the factory location. All you have to do is drill new holes for the mounting screws (takes about 15 seconds with a cordless drill, NO SHEET METAL TRIMMING!! :)). Once mounted, slap your door panel back on and enjoy the sound. They sound amazing in the Jeep. I listen to FM radio and CD's and with both the sound great, even with out an amp. I think I'm pushing about 14watts through them, although they can handle up to 55 watts so there's plenty of room to expand.
Pros:
Easy Installation, Perfect Fit, Sound Amazing
Cons:
No complaints to date

Poor fit, lacking hardware

Written By Dan, NH on Wednesday, October 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I go to Crutchfield because I expect a complete package with good installation instructions and support. These speakers were for my Ridgeline, 2007. The front speakers fit well, the rear speakers fit poorly. They should not be offered for this car, or the bracket should be altered for the rear speakers. I had to cut away parts of the bracket that stuck out where the truck's sheet metal had a protrusion that prevented the bracket from fitting flat. Crutchfield did not include the sheet metal screws that were necessary to install the bracket (once I had modified it) so I had to take a trip to the hardware store for self tapping sheet metal screws. Really. How much would it cost to include a few of these???? I've lost my faith in Crutchfield and will instead buy from vendors that offer the same products for less money. The whole purpose of using Crutchfield was that I get a complete package for a slight premium. The speakers sound great, now that I managed to get them in, but it was a much bigger job (especially in the rear doors) than I expected. These should NOT be advertised as speakers that fit the rear door of a Honda Ridgeline.
Pros:
Speakers sound pretty good. Much better than stock.
Cons:
Terrible installation kit and instructions, esp on rear doors.

New car speakers in a snap!

Written By Tim, Baltimore, MD on Thursday, October 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers to add to an older car (12 years old in my case). Doesn't cost much, relatively easy to install and sound upgrade was a hit for my teenager. Crutchfield provided all the necessary instructions, wiring harness and mounting bracket. I had to use a little bit of imagination because the bracket wasn't exact, but completed the instal in a little under 3 hours.
Pros:
Great advice during purchase, clear instructions for the install, and speakers sound great.
Cons:
Bracket wasn't exact fit, my teenager now wants me to take it up another notch (not happening).

These speakers are a great upgrade from the stock pieces of crap that came in my 2000 Impreza. They've got nice midrange and clear high range. The base leaves a bit to be desired. That can only mean one thing. Time for a subwoofer!
Pros:
Great quality and sound
Cons:
you have to hack at the factory speaker mounts a bit to make these fit.

Great sound at a great price. Do not buy them expecting a ton of base, as it seems some people have done. Also, many stereos can't push these speakers. Getting them for a replacement of stock speakers while using the stock head unit may not produce optimal sound quality.

Great quality and sound

Awesome Sounds

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this product to replace the stock speaker of my Honda Civic 02 base on reading the reviews for this one it catch my attention on (Marine) base materials that they use and how good the sounds would be when installed into a car. I connect this unit with ALPINE CDE-143BT and the result are awesome. This POLK AUDIO speaker comes with the plastic mounting bracket that really works pretty good specially for my front speaker opening just work on little drilling and I'm good to go! This is My 1st DIY uprade for our car audio now I'm planning for my next project on my Toyota Tacoma 04 ( ALPINE+POLK AUDIO+CRUTCHFIELD = Happy Consumer)
Pros:
Nice Silver Color, Marine Grade Materials Used, Sharp Sound Quality, Very Good Front Door Speaker
Cons:
Need a Sub Woofer if you really looking for a Booming Bass but this 6.5 can decently produce good amount of Bass and also it depends what kind of tunes you're playing.

db651s 2004 GMC Searra extended cab

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although my truck is nine years old and has over 150k mls it runs well and to replace it would cost about $60,000.00 I decided up grade the minor items that would keep me happy. I did not want to change the headend it is a Bose system, looking though the Crutchfield website which is very well put together I selected the Polk 651. I think the price was good, the shipping was on time and the speakers were the right ones, I am very happy with them, The fit, the sound its all good. I already recommended Crutchfield to friends and family and I am sure I will order from them again. I have two points of advice, one is if you are not sure how to remove your particular door panel then go on to You Tube I sure its in there. The other is make sure you use the correct size speaker for the cut out in your car. I did make that mistake on the rears, I put a 4" round where a 4x6 speaker would fit. When I placed the order I was under the impression the 4" rounds were the only ones that would fit.
Pros:
Ontime shipping, complete packaging, and the Crutchfield website
Cons:
None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polks fit fine in my car. They are bright in the top end but the mids are fine bass is adequate. They seem to be built well. Not that impressed with the sound. I was told they need a long time to break in so I will wait and see. They do sound better than the factory speakers. I would say fair price for what you get. Not sure if I would recommend them until they break in .
Pros:
Fair price, better than factory speakers
Cons:
Bright on the top end .

Seriously disappointed in these speakers that Crutchfield recommended, they sound no better than the stock ones I just replaced. Returning them.

Great Sound for a Great Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These things sound great, and are marine rated. Perfect for a boat or jeep, or the door of a truck that may get wet. They can take pretty high power, but still sound great even with just the radio. Look really good too. Fit perfect in the 1989 Ford F-150 door.
Pros:
Marine rated Sound great
