Our take on the Polk Audio db651s

by Leigh Schoettinger
Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's db651s shallow-mount speakers feature 6-1/2" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that stand up to heat and moisture. Liquid-cooled 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction. With a 2" mounting depth, these speakers can fit into some tight places. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

These speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs. The tweeters use neodymium magnets.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles are based on exclusive MOMO designs.

Polk DB 651s

Written By Joe, Allentown on Saturday, July 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An upgrade from my factory cardboard speakers but not by much. I replaced my brand new 2014 Elantra factory speakers. The Polk speakers are a little cleaner and sharper sounding but don't buy these for the base because you will not be getting any.
Pros:
Slightly better than factory
Cons:
Not a speaker for base.

Very Clear but lack Bass

Written By Rob, Easton PA on Friday, July 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the stock ones in my 2012 Hyundai Sonata. I wanted to keep the stock head unit because of all the features it has. Installing the speakers was a breeze. The sound clarity is far superior to the stock 6 1/2's. However the stock system doesn't have enough power to really drive these hard enough to produce any bass. I lost nearly all the bass from the car. That isn't the speakers fault. I would recommend these speakers to anyone who has a system with some power. I just added an Infinity Basslink sub on Crutchfield's opinion to bring back the bass, and now my rock music sounds nearly perfect.
Pros:
Great Clarity and easy to install
Cons:
Needs a powerful head unit to produce any bass.

POLK AUDIO db651s

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

EXCELLENT PRODUCT QUALITY
Pros:
EASE OF INSTALLATION IN FRONT, SOUNDS REALLY NICE IN UPPER AND MIDRANGE DECIBELS, LOOK COOL THROUGH FACTORY GRILLS ( SPEAKERS HAVE GOLD CONES). CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN SHOULD EASILY FAR OUTLAST O.E.M. UNITS
Cons:
INSTALLATION IN REAR WOULD HELP WITH MORE MODEL SPECIFIC ADAPTER INSTRUCTIONS, LOW RANGE AUDIO RESPONSE COULD BE BETTER ( GUESS A SUB WOOFER WOULD HELP)

Replaced oem speakers in 2012 Sonata with these. I has a stock system not the infinity package. The difference was night and day. The sound came to life as the oem speakers were as good as cardboard.
Pros:
Clear & defined separation of sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were easy to install with the help from the connecting wires and mounting brackets. They also sound really good inside my car. I was not able to use the cover pieces since my door panels would not allow it, but they would have looked nice.
Pros:
Sound is good.
Cons:
The installation required an extra step by adding extra holes for the brackets.

Good value, Chevy Trailblazer EXT

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers went into the front and rear doors of my Trailblazer. Easy install and great upgrade to the sound system. The free wire plug / pigtail fit my factory harness perfectly. It took maybe 90 minutes total. I watched a YouTube video to remove my door pad.
Pros:
Easy install, good sound.
Cons:
I did not use the mounting ring provided.

Sound Great!!

Written By David, Montgomery, AL on Wednesday, July 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2000 Harley Electra Glide. Wanted to upgrade speakers because it still had the stock ones, with those I had to turn the bass all the way down and just not good overall sound quality anymore... After installing these I turned up the bass and was really impressed with the sound!! Haven't hit the expressway yet but I can tell I will be able to hear the radio much better now! And they are marine rated so I don't have to worry about rain or washing my bike... Thinking about adding a set to my saddle bags.
Pros:
Sound great, priced well, easy to install!
Cons:
No complaints...

Polk Audio Speakers

Written By Gene, Maine on Wednesday, July 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are Great speakers. They have excellent sound quality and are built extremely well. I bought them as I have had Polk home speakers and I was very satisfied with those. Currently they are hooked to the factory radio which sounds good but I plan on upgrading the head. For the price, these speakers are hard to beat. I would highly recommend them and I am planning on buying another set to replace the rears. Thank You Crutchfield
Pros:
Great Sound, Great Price, and easy install.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Better than factory but much on the mid range side. Tweeters are perfect for my Fit. Need to fill with a sub to round out the range. Overall good upgrade. Installation not as easy as it appeared.
Pros:
Good upper range and matched for power out of the factory stereo.
Cons:
Mids are a little overpowering and not much bass to speak of. adapters from factory a little tricky.

awesome

Written By Joe C, Anderson SC on Sunday, June 22, 2014

Got these for my 2006 Tundra DC. They sound awesome compared to stock. They are powered by a Pioneer 25w RMS head unit. The rear install was a breeze, the front was a different story. I would up ripping out the stock front speakers from the plastic mold they were in and installing these in their place. All in all it was pretty easy to do. I cant complain about these speakers one bit. And I definitely cant complain about all the free wire harnesses and adapters Crutchfield sent me.
Pros:
Great sound Easy install Quality for the price Decent bass

was going to upgrade the factory sound system in my 06 GTO, decided to do the speakers first. Factory radio kicks now! The entire audio range is significantly better than the stock speakers. Install was straight forward, only had to rewire the polarity on the rears. Great speakers for the price!
Pros:
great sound, easy install.
Cons:
none

Huge improvement!

Written By Steve, Sandy,Utah on Tuesday, June 17, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used these in the rear of my 99 extended Tacoma and I think I would be just as pleased with them in the front if I hadn't used Polk 6501 components there. For the money they sound great, accurate and alive. If you like more bass get a sub, you would with any speaker. For me they sound really good!
Pros:
Huge improvement over stock. You will hear more in your music than before. Buy and Enjoy!
Cons:
Uh...they didn't install themselves:)

Sound Great!

Written By SteveK, Syracuse, NY on Sunday, June 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in the front doors of my '09 Subaru Forester (paired with DB651 in the rear and powered by 22 watt JVC head unit) and they sound so much better than the stock factory speakers. I put them through their paces with a variety of music from driving drums and bass to intricate instrumentals to subtle vocals. Everything sounded tremendous.
Pros:
Sound great. Fit well. well made. Much more efficient than factory speakers (produce more sound at the same volume level on the head unit).
Cons:
Nothing yet.

Polk Audio db661

Written By Steve, Texas on Friday, June 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put four of these in my 2012 Jeep Wrangler. The ones in the roll bar enclosure sound decent but the ones in the dash are over driven by bass and sound like they are distorting if much bass or volume is applied. I have the stock head unit with SIRIUS and like my music with more punch than these are able to deliver. I plan to return the dash speakers and get some 6.5" woofers.
Pros:
Good mids and highs. Good instructions provided.
Cons:
No bass. In fact if you increase the bass too much the dash speakers distort badly.

While I can't compare these to other speakers, I can say they sound great in my '12 Ram 4-door. I replaced all 4 door speakers with these, and I'm impressed with the ease of installation (thanks Crutchfield) and the sound quality. These seem to be very stout speakers for my intended purpose, and the improvement over factory speakers was immediately noticeable.
Pros:
fit the spot perfectly great sound
