Our take on the Polk Audio db651s

by Leigh Schoettinger
Polk Audio

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's db651s shallow-mount speakers feature 6-1/2" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that stand up to heat and moisture. Liquid-cooled 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction. With a 2" mounting depth, these speakers can fit into some tight places. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

These speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters provide clear, detailed highs. The tweeters use neodymium magnets.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles are based on exclusive MOMO designs.

Clear rich highs and mids and I got the Lowes from the 8" sub sounds great .... thank you Crutchfield

Better than Expected.....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put these in a honda hybrid hooked to a older Kenwood receiver with a 22 rms rating for a neighbor of mine. After about a two week break in period at medium volume, I went back and tuned up her sound and man was I shocked how Crystal clear her music sounded. Installation was a breeze with the wire harnesses and bracket mounts that Crutchfield supplied. She was so excited and can't wait to get a subwoofer to fill out the sound. Thanks again Crutchfield fantastic as always.....

Polk Audio DB651s

Written By c_stone, Axton, Virginia on Sunday, August 10, 2014

Bought these for my daily driver, (80 mile commute to work every day) a 1992 Honda Civic Hatch. Didn't want to put a whole lot of money in it but I wanted decent sound quality. The previous owner had installed Polk's in the rear, so I read reviews on these and I'm extremely pleased! They don't break the bank but I could hear things more clearly, and also some different notes that the old stock speakers couldn't produce. Currently just running off head unit power, but I am curious to see how they do with a decent Amp!
Pros:
Crisp sound. Best bang for your buck. Easy to read and follow Instructions (proper english and grammar) Not cheaply made, quality materials.
Cons:
None.

Polk Audio db651s in the front door of a 1997 Honda CR-V

Written By David, Lafayette, CO on Saturday, August 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installing these speakers in the front doors of my 1997 Honda CR-V was a breeze - took about 10 minutes total with the free wiring adapters. The two main improvements over my 17-year-old(!) factory speakers are: 1) the efficiency - the music is much louder on a given volume setting than before, and 2) no more distortion at any volume level. I can't speak to the bass level as I have previously installed a Kenwood powered subwoofer, but overall the highs and mids sound really good out of these speakers. I am very pleased with the improvements over my stock speakers and recommend these as a great low-profile speaker that will give you rich, full sound.
Pros:
Great, balanced sound, easy to install (in a Honda CR-V).
Cons:
None

1998 GMC Sierra

Written By Matt, Illinois on Monday, August 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced my alpine components with these. Sound is just as good, at a smaller price tag. nice highs and mids, decent lows, complement my 8" bazooka tube nicely. Install was simple after a quick call to Crutchfield about mounting bracket. Cut off everything but the three supports where you screw it into the door. Have an alpine head unit and my next purchase will be the plug and play amp. That should really bring my sound system alive. I will only ever purchase from Crutchfield.
Pros:
Price, sound
Cons:
Mounting bracket should have better instructions.

Fits Dodge Stealth

Written By John M., Waterford NY on Saturday, August 02, 2014

Love these speakers! Fit guide said these were a no go. I was not crazy about the speakers that it came up with so I called customer support. Spoke to Dallas and told him what I wanted and my dilemma. He pulled up all the specs for my car and recommended these. Very minor modification and used the included speaker adapter. All I did was cut the plastic "wagon wheel" from the inside of the factory speaker grille and perfect! Also you can now see the nice gold Polk speaker thru the grille. Nice! Always the BEST customer service at Crutchfield! I really love this car and Crutchfield helped me get it to the next level! Thanks!!
Pros:
POLK quality and construction! They sound amazing! GREAT value!!
Cons:
The grilles are too obtrusive. A different option would have been nice but these weren't used anyway.

I got these for my 09 civic. Good highs and mids, not much bass but that's not what they are for. Powering them with a Kenwood DDX371 no amp and they sound great.
Pros:
Crisp highs and good mids.
Cons:
No bass but what do you expect from a 6.5 speaker.

An upgrade from my factory cardboard speakers but not by much. I replaced my brand new 2014 Elantra factory speakers. The Polk speakers are a little cleaner and sharper sounding but don't buy these for the base because you will not be getting any.
Pros:
Slightly better than factory
Cons:
Not a speaker for base.

Very Clear but lack Bass

Written By Rob, Easton PA on Friday, July 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the stock ones in my 2012 Hyundai Sonata. I wanted to keep the stock head unit because of all the features it has. Installing the speakers was a breeze. The sound clarity is far superior to the stock 6 1/2's. However the stock system doesn't have enough power to really drive these hard enough to produce any bass. I lost nearly all the bass from the car. That isn't the speakers fault. I would recommend these speakers to anyone who has a system with some power. I just added an Infinity Basslink sub on Crutchfield's opinion to bring back the bass, and now my rock music sounds nearly perfect.
Pros:
Great Clarity and easy to install
Cons:
Needs a powerful head unit to produce any bass.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT QUALITY
Pros:
EASE OF INSTALLATION IN FRONT, SOUNDS REALLY NICE IN UPPER AND MIDRANGE DECIBELS, LOOK COOL THROUGH FACTORY GRILLS ( SPEAKERS HAVE GOLD CONES). CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN SHOULD EASILY FAR OUTLAST O.E.M. UNITS
Cons:
INSTALLATION IN REAR WOULD HELP WITH MORE MODEL SPECIFIC ADAPTER INSTRUCTIONS, LOW RANGE AUDIO RESPONSE COULD BE BETTER ( GUESS A SUB WOOFER WOULD HELP)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were easy to install with the help from the connecting wires and mounting brackets. They also sound really good inside my car. I was not able to use the cover pieces since my door panels would not allow it, but they would have looked nice.
Pros:
Sound is good.
Cons:
The installation required an extra step by adding extra holes for the brackets.
