Polk precision

Good music becomes great when you hear it through Polk's db Series car speakers. Polk engineers use laser imaging to determine the ideal combination of speaker materials and design to eliminate distortion. The resulting technology produces speakers with smooth frequency response, sharp detail, and the ability to play music at high volumes without strain.

Polk's db691 speakers feature 6"x9" woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds that won't fall apart under stress from heat, moisture, or time. Liquid-cooled 1" silk/polymer dome tweeters use powerful Neodymium magnets to deliver precise high-frequency reproduction, enveloping you in bright musical detail. The 3/4" dome supertweeters add even more sparkle to reproduce your music's natural intricacies. The built-in two-way crossovers keep the high and low frequencies flowing to the proper drivers for seamless, efficient audio.

These db Series speakers feature stainless steel mounting hardware and muscular ABS grilles that will add a stylish touch to your car's interior. And Polk certifies these speakers for marine applications, so they're a great choice for your boat, motorcycle, or ATV.

The speakers sound good, installation was simple. Installed them in my 84 Vette, installation was not good. the tweeters protrude above the mounting flance, which required modification, a spacer under the orignal grill. The grill provided with the speakes offered little protection and were ugly The sales person did not provide any info about the installation.

Pros: sound good

Cons: ugly grills provided, installation was a pain

Sound worse than the speaker I replaced

Written by: Robert from JBLM WA on April 8, 2015

Installed Pioneer MRP-300 amp and Polk 6x9 's and they sound worst than the Pioneer component speaker with the alpine in dash deck powering them . Total disappointment ! Door were sealed tight as a drum , hooked the amp up to the pre-amp outputs , used the amp power supply that was recommended by Crutchfield . And It sound awful . I don't know if its the amp or the speaker but what a waste of time and money

Pros: none

Cons: Stuck with a well below average system that I paid for with hard earned money

These were a disappointment. I bought them on sale to replace some super cheap kicker 6x9's. I'll be putting the Kickers back in. Save yourself the money and buy the cheapest kicker 6x9s if you want this level of quality.

Pros: They look pretty

Cons: Polk audio has join the rest of American producers in degraded quality posing as expensive equipment. You got me again!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used these in the rear deck! Love the crisp clean sound. Polk Audio has been around a long time and has always been towards the top as far as quality. My Home Theater is all Polk Audio. This and the reviews are why I chose these. I have a Pioneer HU with built in power and haven't even hooked my amp up yet and these sound amazing! I would highly recommend these you won't regret it!

Pros: Clear crisp sound with just enough low end to not sound boomy. These replaced my speakers in my 2007 Saturn Aura and have made a huge difference. Easy to install.

Cons: N/A

Good well built speakers really bring the music to life. Great sturdy construction should provide years of listening enjoyment, even with my fits of metal core and screamo. These speakers make country music sound live.

Pros: Great sound, well built, multi attachment bracket included is a plus

Cons: None as of yet

Written by: John M. from Waterford NY on August 2, 2014

Great sounding speaker, high quality construction. And the fit guide says they won't fit They do with a very minor modification made with a utility knife to the plastic port tube behind the oem speaker. Have to thank Dallas for pointing me to these and looking up the specs on my car and letting me know what to do to make them fit. REAL customer service!! Always shop here for car audio! These people go above and beyond!!

Pros: POLK name! Build quality! Unbelievable sound at this price! Great value with Polk Audio!

Cons: Grilles are a little too obtrusive for me but could not use anyway. Better grille options would be nice!

Great stock replacement

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put the Polk DB691 in the back of my 07 Honda accord ( Crutchfield says they don't fit but they do) and Polk DB 651 in the front. I only replaced the speakers and no other equipment. These seem to be working really well with my system (180w) due to the high sensitivity rating. I know that the would work even better with a head unit / amp. Overall, I think these speakers are an excellent replacement for an otherwise stock system.

Pros: Works excellently with a stock set up. Great improvement on overall sound with little investment. Great highs and mids.

Cons: Bass is fine for now but will give up if i try to crank it higher. I imagine this problem would be fixed with an amp.

Great speakers! Installed on a custom built Bagger motorcycle and you can hear them CRYSTAL CLEAR on the highway over the loud exhaust with just a JVC head unit!

Pros: Awesome sound, good looking griles, allows for expanding system!

Cons: No real cons, except since they can handle so much power they beg for you to expand you stereo!

not so good

Written by: fred from woodland ca on April 29, 2014

I put these speakers in boxes and hooked them up to an alpine deck with no amp, all they did was screech. So I put them in a jeep with an amp pushing them, absolutely no better/ worse. No bass, can't hear much of the guitar or midrange just horrible. The old Kickers 6x9 and some old Fosgate R series 6x9's were better.

Pros: none

Cons: about $100 overpriced

Not impressed

Written by: Kelly from sacramento ca on April 28, 2014

I bought these for a project car and did tons of research, I wanted a good sounding 6x9 in the $75 to $150 range. I really wanted a good speaker that would rock out and most reviews were good and no shortage of reviews on this speaker. Wow, I returned them as fast as I could, they were horrible, a tweeter is what they are, you can't here the bass the band (you know the music) nothing sounded good. So I paid extra and got the JL c2 6x9, man they are 100 times better.

Pros: None

Cons: screechy with no bass once so ever.

Best 6x9's for the money!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent addition to my 2011 Tundra DC! Needed to make some adjustments to the front doors (cutting existing speaker grills, and used adjusted existing speakers) and now fit nicely. I have them hooked up to an amp and these get loud! They complement the other 3.5 DB's I have in the dash as well as the 6.5 DB's in the rear doors. I started with these un-amplified, but they SHOULD be amplified! Great and Crutchfield supplies exactly what you need to make it an easy install!

Pros: Looks, functionality, sound and BASS!!

Cons: None except I had to make adjustments to my Tundras doors to fit them.

Very Good

Written by: PirateRiderBen from Greenville NC on February 4, 2014

I fit these in my 2004 Dodge Ram. Yes, they do fit fine with just the included spacer. They have clean and crisp highs, mids, and surprisingly good lows. They rattle my rear view mirror at only 35 volume level, and I am only powering them with a basic Pioneer single din head unit that is 14 watts RMS x4. So I am not even pushing them anywhere near their 125watt RMS rating. I cannot attest to durability as I have only had them a few days, however past experiences with Polk products encourages me to think these will hold up for a long time. I paired them with Polk db651s 6.5" speakers in the rear doors. Eventually I will be putting an Alpine Type R 12" under the back seat to compete the sound system. Can't go wrong with Polk speakers!

Installed these in the rear deck of my 2011 Ford Fusion which was a stretch because it didn't come with factory 6X9's there so had to do some cutting etc. but it was so worth it! These speakers handle the full spectrum of sound with such incredible clarity and ease and sound really great matched with my Pioneer deck and Alpine power pack amp. I've had several Polk speakers over the years and have always been impressed with their smooth sound and excellent build quality.

Pros: Smooth sound, very detailed, excellent quality

Cons: none

These speakers sound great off my Kenwood head unit. The lows sound decent, but the mids and highs have really improved dramatically over the stock Toyota speakers.

Pros: Great mids and highs.

Cons: Although there is a high sensitivity rating and low frequency response, the bass is not all that loud. I can imagine that if there was an amp hooked up to them, the low end would sound great also.

I purchased these speakers about a month ago, and there nice, the sound is a little less loud but the amount of clarity makes up for it, i'm running it off my stock HU, so they can and will get louder when ever I want to invest farther into my radio, but crystal clear, not bad price, easy install. compared to my speakers in the the truck (stock) when i put them out... really didn't think they would fit. bass kind of picks up too.

Pros: clear,

Cons: loss of loudness

Very clear sound

Written by: Anonymous from El Dorado Hills, CA on October 12, 2012

Installed these in my 05 Dodge Ram's front doors today, connected to an Alpine CDE-HD138BT. They have a very, very clear and clean sound. They get very loud even running on just my HU's power. I'm not getting a ton of bass, but they're brand new and aren't being given a ton of power, so that could be part of the issue. I imagine more wattage would help, but honestly i can't imagine how loud the rest of the audio spectrum would be with 100 watts being sent to them. It would be seriously deafening! In any case, these combined with DB351's in the dash make for sound that is tremendously cleaner and clearer than my stock "Infinity" system.

As an aside, Crutchfield says these don't fit in an 05 Dodge Ram and I have no idea why. They fit easily and with room to spare, both in front of and behind the speaker. You just have to reuse the stock speakers' mounting spacers. Crutchfield really should add these to the speakers that show up for an 05 Dodge Ram under "outfit my car".

Pros: Very sensitive. Clear and accurate sound. Fit well in an 05 Dodge Ram front doors.

Cons: Not a lot of bass in my application, but that could be due to them not being broken in and not receiving a lot of power from my HU (18 watts per channel RMS).

It was a great difference.

beautiful little speakers

Written by: Duncan from Toronto, ON on April 3, 2012

I actually had to wait for a few months to buy these because Crutchfield was out of stock. Totally worth the wait. They sound pretty close to perfect. I listen to all types of music, from hiphop and electronic stuff to folk and rock. Clear mids and highs and a nice little oomph of bass. Installed them in like 25 minutes into my honda civic hatch. If you're into like crazy boomy bass then you will definitely need an amp and sub, but these bang on if you're into clear and precise sounding music. For the price, this is a great product. I'm a new fan of Polk.

I also have to say that Crutchfield seriously rocks. I ordered on a Sunday and they arrived Tuesday morning, free shipping was awesome. The guys from Crutchfield called me (because I typed in my address wrong) and were super nice and accommodating on the phone. Crutchfield is the best, don't bother ordering from anyone else.

Pros: Easy to install, great mids, really clean bass, an awesome upgrade for your system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced (4) factory speakers- These 6x9's up front sound better, especially at HIGH volume, than all 4 of the stock speakers. Even impressed with the bass and mid response. Installation was simple and smooth, all the adapters were perfect, instructions spot on and easy to follow. I did forget to secure the wiring adapter, which adds about 6" of wire inside the door, so my window rubbed it on the way down. Easy fix and I was warned ahead of time, just forgot.

Pros: Crisp and clear at high volume- mostly listen to metal. FFDP, Sevenfold, Metallica, etc. I used to stop volume increase at point of distortion, now I stop because it's too loud. VERY happy with bass.

Cons: Little worried about the tweeter, which pushes slightly on the factory door grille. Too soon to tell if it will cause damage.

After reading the other reviews on your site, I felt like I was taking a chance
when I bought these, but I love these speakers! I have them in the front door
panels of my pickup, pushed by a Bazooka amp, and they produce the clearest,
deepest sound I've gotten from many sets of speakers I've bought over the
years. They have enough low end on the hip-hop stuff to rattle the doors and
yet produce some really piercing highs listening to rock and the occassional
diva track, but they really shine when they get to show how effortlessly they
can do both at once on more complex jazz and country pieces. I couldn't be
happier! Kudos to Polk for a fine product

These speakers are something else! I purchased these after being VERY disappointed
with "kickers " that some reps sugested were great ( I returned those) These speakers have
lots of CLEAN bass and blend in well with the highs and mids from my front components. I
have them hooked to a Rockford Fosgate amp, however I have to keep the gain below half. I
believe these things would push lots of bass from any deck with or without an amp. The
Kickers I tried were way too high on the highs and distorted on lows even at moderate
volume. When you call, I recomend KEVIN at EXT 4043 as a good rep.

Written by: 2006 Dodge Ram from Washington on September 18, 2010

Amazing sound out of these speakers. I was concerned about the sound I was
going to get after reading a number of reviews about needing an amp to power
them. I have this hooked up to my stock deck in a 2006 Dodge Ram. I added the
Polk Audio DB651s for the rear speakers, but honestly they are not needed. The
highs and the lows that come out of these 6x9's is very impressive. The fact
that they have a built in crossover is nice, the bass comes through very clean
leaving the highs loud and crisp.

Great Speakers! must be Amplified!

Written by: JMS from Pennsylvania on May 31, 2010

I read a bunch of reviews for these speakers, and found a lot of people saying no sound comes out of these, my stock speakers worked better than these, or something along those lines. Before I buy a speaker I always check out the the specifications and one thing I noticed about these was was their minimum power started at 10Wrms. Thats a very high starting point for speakers! I realized with this that meant even the best head units out there were only going to push out 14-18Wrms which means your barely going to be pushing these bad boys. Would you settle for a nightlight in every room of your house as all the light you had? Anyways I hooked the speakers up to Rockford Fosgate Punch P400.2 and WOW, what an amazing difference! They went from cranking the H.U. up just to hear them to turning them up halfway and now shaking my mirrors. Take it from me these are good speakers, you just have to get an amplifier.

A warm, rich sound - but lack some brilliance and clarity

Written by: Beau from Nashville, TN on November 11, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have the Polk db 691 and db 651 coaxials driven by a Kicker Zx350.4 (60w x 4 ) amp. Now they sound a little better than my 8-year-old Kenwood 3-way 6 x 9"s, but my old Infinity Refenence 6.5"s sounded a lot brighter and more detailed... I bought these Polks because they should last a lot longer in the rear deck. UV rays and heat from the sun will deteriorate most speakers.( My old Infinity Reference 6 x 9" cones rotted away in 2 years time, but I should have covered them up with a towel or used a sun shade because that car sat in the driveway most of the time in direct sunlight.)
As for my front door speakers, I transfered my old Infinitys to my other car so I still enjoy them... The Polk db vocals sound pretty good and they can handle moderate power (60W RMS), but I know first hand that the Infinity Reference have a "brighter" sound instead of the "warmer" sound that Polk db's produce. I am not familiar with the Polk Audio components or the Mobile Monitors, but I think in the future I will try Infinity Kappas- they should have a little more clarity and brightness. These Polk db's suit me just fine for now, as I listen to a variety of music including hard rock. They aren't bad for the money, but if you are not really on a budget, buy a quality amplifier and go for the Polk Mobile Monitors or Infinity Kappas- especially if you are into instrumental, bluegrass, or classical music.

1995 Acura Legend LS
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory speakers on my Acura Legend were making buzzing noise so I thought it was time to change it. So, I bought set of Polk 6x9 and 6 1/2 to replace factory speakers which are paper base but it hits hard on the base which I like. But when I connected the Polk speakers, it was half as loud as the paper made speakers. I thought I connected the wires wrong but either way it sounded similar. I don't know how they do it but the engineers, they'll make gem out of rock I guess. Oh by the way, when I ordered these two pairs of Polks, the order didn't ship with any wires or wiring harness. None was included in the speaker box either. When I ordered the product online, it said it didn't require any extra harness. I ended up purchasing separate wires and a set of connectors to get the wires connected. I hate cutting and splicing original car speaker wires because I always end up loosing the original speaker plugs and it's messy with splicing on my own. I had to take apart the factory plug and get the wires out of the plugs without cutting the wires. Now, I am hesitant to swap the front speakers with 6 1/2 Polk because I'm going to loose all the base I enjoyed before. Right now I'm cranking up the volume much more to get the similar base effect. The sound detail is more clearer with Polk but from the rear speakers, you really want to hear the base. I'm thinking of trying out Infinity Kapa speakers soon.

Good, Versatile 6x9

One of the cleanest looking speakers in the entry-level bracket using a
gunmetal color cone and not over-the-top grilles. Produce decent sound at
low power (not so efficient if amplified considerably), especially if enclosed
in a box, allowing it to produce decent mids and dip into the lows. Its also
considered Marinized, making it an ideal speaker for installing in outdoor
vehicles that don't see extreme weather (golf carts, mules, etc). All-in-all, a
good performing, versatile speaker for the price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first time using Polk speakers. I will say it's my last. They have horrible mids and screachy highs. I feel like i'm listening to music inside a tin cup. I may upgrade to a higher quility Polk, but never would I suggest these speakers.

Nice and tight - excellent for my boat

Written by: Douglas from Milwaukee WI on November 7, 2007

I purchased a pair of the 6x9 and 5 1/4" speakers to install in my vintage 1971 speedboat. Coupled with the infinity bass link and a Jensen head unit the system really rocks - hard! I have received a number of compliments on the sound system - for the sound and looks. Everyone likes the speakers - the grills are very nicely done - nothing overstated or cheesy with chrome. They have received a fair amount of splashed water and it hasn't damaged them. I wouldn't submerge them; however, they do prove to work well in a boat. I will be adding a pair of these to my 2007 Accord because the sound is amazing. On a boat the last thing you want is distortion at high volume to overcome the motor sound - these puppies really crank - loud and clear - and at lower volumes when we are tied up on a sand bar - look out you will get lots of people asking how did you get that to sound so good!!! It's fun - and the speakers are priced right!

Nice speakers. Very crisp and clean. Theyre not subs, but they do bump pretty good. Very clean bass. Pretty loud and just crystal clear.

Product Research

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofer Cones: Each speaker features a Dynamic Balance polymer/mica composite mineral-filled cone. The cones are stiff and lightweight for big sound and low distortion.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

Kapton Voice Coil Former: The low-mass two-layer 25mm Kapton Voice Coil former is lightweight for high sound output. Kapton's high melting temperature (725°F) ensures high power handling and longer reliability.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeter and Super Tweeter: The speakers feature 1" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite tweeters and 3/4" liquid-cooled, silk/polymer composite super-tweeters for clearer, more accurate mids and highs.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Flat Spider: The speaker utilizes a flat spider for faster, longer excursion linear motion.

Pole Plate Heat Sink: The speaker's pole plate heat sink promotes better heat dissipation for superior power handling and reliability.

Woven Leads: The speaker features flexible woven leads sewn directly into the spider for greater reliability.

Basket: The speaker is housed in a solid, acoustically inert stamped steel basket finished in rustproof gun metal gray.

Grilles: Strong ABS plastic grilles are included. These computer optimized grilles are based on exclusive MOMO designs.
