Exacting standards — precise engineering where it counts
The DXi 104 10" sub features a stiff polymer composite cone and sturdy large roll butyl rubber surround, so you can ride the bass wave for years to come. Engineers at Polk analyze drivers in motion to ensure that cone movement is even and precise, so you'll get impressive thump with minimal distortion. Polk also uses laser imaging to craft woofer cones that are perfectly balanced to resist distortion-causing resonances.

Pair this sub with the right amp and enclosure, then strap yourself in for a serious low-frequency ride.

ToddK from Skiatook, OK on 3/10/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speaker is mounted in a custom sealed enclosure along with two Rockford Fosgate 10" mid bass units. The speakers have their own sealed partition inside a 5/8" cabinet and together they sound very good. The Polk sub delivers tight and defined bass, in fact a friend commented that the bass is "tight". It is the right kind of punchy and I have the sub channel on the Kicker CX600.5 amp I'm using to drive the speakers turned down so the Polk DXi104 doesn't overpower everything else. Very pleased with it and well worth 40 bucks.

Pros: It looks nice and sounds better.

Cons: It isn't a dual 4-ohm, don't care much for the hex head mounting screws.

Nice 10inch Sub!, Powered Properly Will Surround you With Lots of Bass!. ~ Intense Little SubWoofer!!!.

Pros: Hard Hitting In a Sealed Enclosure!, Sealed subwoofer box will deliver a tight, clean and accurate bass response. ~ Ported or vented enclosures, For You know that guy you can hear from 2 blocks away Kind of BASS!. Just make sure to TUNE it Properly, This style enclosure will likely be about twice the size of a similar sealed box since the airspace inside the chamber is much larger. Ported enclosures are tuned to a certain frequency range which is determined by the port length, width and DIA!..

I wanted to use these in a different setup then they were made for, a home theater sub setup. I already had a power supply and Pioneer amp layin around so I figured why not spend a little over $100 on two of these and box then spend $400 on a home sub. Well I'm glad I did because now everyone tells me it's like going to the Imax at my house. It's a great cost effective setup. Can't beat Polk for the money.

Pros: Great sound and looks, performance is outstanding on only 125 watts each.

Cons: I don't have more power for them yet

I was working on a budget to put some new gear in my car. I soldered the connections instead of using a crimp terminal connector. I wish they had come with spring terminals but for the price ... it's OK. I do recommend breaking these in at lower volumes for about a week. When I first installed them I admit I cranked them and I didn't really care for them.. Now that some time has gone by they sound excellent!

Pros: Great sound. Great price.

Cons: Discontinued. Glad I got mine!

This subwoofer was just what i was looking for to replace my existing 10". Just dropped right into the old box and I was rockin. Too really get better sound, I suggest a bigger box but overall, I'm very pleased with it. The price was perfect for my budget.

Pros: Small size, doesn't take up lots of room. Good bass response too. I can crank up my HU to 24 and I don't get any buzz or cracking. Good quality build.. Definitely built to last.

Cons: None

Pros: Marine grade. Larger diameter voice coil than competitors. Very decent RMS rating for price. Small airspace requirement. High quality manufacture. Looks nice. Excellent value.

Cons: Average sensitivity not really a con.

B.W. from Toms River, NJ on 2/10/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always been a 12" sub kind of guy. Not too big, not too small, and best overall sound in MY opinion. However, I wanted to change things up and at the same time give my hatch a little extra storage room for my bmx bikes, etc, so decided my next sub would be a 10". I looked and looked and just couldnt decide on which one to pick. Really wanted a Sundown SD or SA series, but wanted to keep the new audio build on a much stricter budget than in previous builds. Black Fri 2013 I get an email from CF with some good deals. Right up there was this cute little 10" Polk DXi 104 sub and for only $40. Did some comparisons to other wallet friendly subs I had been looking at. Already had a 300rms @4ohm(500rms@2ohm) Kenwood amp and wasn't about to buy a new amp just for a sub purchase, so the sub needed to match close to the rms of the amp I already had. Also noticed this Polk sub had a better xmax than any of the other subs I'd been comparing which is always a nice thing. Had good luck with DXi series stuff in the past, so I figured this sub should be a product that would last a while, and sound good..."add to cart"! Let it break in at low power over a couple weeks on my bedroom setup before installing it in the car. Bought correct size sealed box, upgraded wiring, and added extra internal sealant.. Sounds accurate enough, and plays fairly deep with no distortion at higher volumes with 300rms pushing it. I still like a good 12" better and will go back soon, but Im very happy with it.

Pros: Accurate enough sound. Plays fairly deep. Punchy but deep. Feels very well made...very solid and good weight. An absolute no brainer at $40!

Cons: None really other than the spade style terminals everyone has mentioned. However, and to be fair, some of those spring loaded, or set screw style terminals can cut through speaker wire. I've had that happen more than once, so these spade terminals really aren't that much of a put off for me.

I bought this sub on sale and it has been excellent for my intentions. I'm not big on "loud" music I just wanted some low end to increase the overall sound in my car. However, this little sub at full power still sounds great, I just don't prefer that much volume. I am 100% satisfied!!!

Pros: Price Quality Ease of use

Bought a pair of 10" Polks on sale. After reading some reviews, that were both positive and negative. I decided to try them out. Great subs so far. I know they are not broken in yet and it takes easily a 100hours to really work them in. But out of the box, they are tight and articulate. Not muddy.

Pros: Great for the price

I am very pleased with these subs. Haven't quite broke them in yet but they sound better each day. Have them mounted in sealed enclosures of the recommended vol., powered with a Cadence 1500.1 mono amp and Alpine HU. I listen to a wide range of music and they sound great no matter what I have playing. And of course the price is unbeatable.

Pros: Look great, sound great, strong build.

Cons: None so far.

Solid sub

Benzovs from Tucson, Az on 1/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always used alpine and JL subs since they are known to be bulletproof. But for the price, I couldn't pass up the deal on these polks. I'm glad I didn't since these subs don' t disappoint. They use very little airspace and sound really good. I have them hooked up to a mrx-v70 and they sound great, I honestly think they can handle a little more power but I'm happy right where it's at. I would have give it 5 stars all around but I don't like the terminals much, but for the price, I can't complain.

Pros: Small airspace requirements. Solid build all around. Great sound.

Cons: Low quality speaker terminals.

Ok, for the price. Sent back

I bought 2 of these for a sealed hatchback box. I currently am running a 13.5 jl audio sub in a ported box. I wanted to go to the 2 10s in the smaller box to gain some trunk space back...... The loss of bass from the 13.5 to the 10s was enough for me to send them back and stick with the jl.

Pros: Cheap, well built,

Cons: None. Just was expecting more than I should have been I guess

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this subwoofer! I had a Sony explode that just didn't seem to have much volume and it distorted a lot. So, I bought the Polk sub, swapped it out and began to break it in. Right off the bat, it sounded sooooo much better. Now I've got it broken in and it's amazing how much different it sounds. It has awesome bass volume and produces a great punch. I recommend this sub to everyone! But, beware...the screws for it are hex head, there are no box measurements nor is there a gasket to seal with. Lol

Pros: Great sound, inexpensive

Cons: Spade terminals No box instructions No gasket to seal around speaker Hex head screws

Puncy Bass

Justin G. from Murfreesboro, TN on 1/9/2014

I have a pair of these installed in a sealed box, each sub gets .6 cubic ft. (after subtracting the size of the woofer). I added 1/4th of pound of pollyfill in each chamber. I should have crammed some more in. The base is tight and punchy, I was looking for a low rumble, but this is what you get with 10" drivers crammed into a very small space (under seat in an extended cab). Hopefully I can take out the punch with eq settings. I am driving the woofers with an Alpine mono block amp, wired in parallel to generate 500w. I have them crossed over at 80 HZ. Be aware that these are basic entry-level drivers. No thick rubber gasket material (but the mounting ring appears to be coated with a plastic material). I was worried about getting a tight seal, it seems to be a good seal I am not getting a "pharting" sound from the woofers. The speaker connections are basic spade connections. You will need to spend a lot more money to get higher quality connections. The woofer cones blend in very well with my charcoal grey box -- to well. They look bland, the logo just does not "pop" like it does in the online pics. But, they look and feel well-made, very solid and heavy.

Pros: Bang for the buck, very clean no distortion. Solid build quality.

Cons: Speaker terminal connections. Bland look when installed.

This sub is great for the price.I have had Polk products in the past and they never have let me down. It has great quality in all types of music. I have this in a sealed box in my 2010 Malibu. I'm using the Alpine MRP-M500 amp. Don't waste your money at Wally World's on cheap sub woofers. I have been doing business with Crutchfield for years. The service they offer is awesome. Any questions you have, they are always there. You won't get that at other stores.

Pros: Great sound, great price

Cons: None

Great for the Price

A. P. from Chicago, IL on 1/3/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had many subs in my life, all of them being 12's. I decided to go with this 10" because I have all DXi speakers in my car and really like them. Please keep in mind that my rating correlates with the price. I have had other, better looking, better build subs, but this thing is perfect for its price. It is in a 1.25 Cubic Foot vented box and it slams for its size even with it slightly underpowered (which I am working on fixing). You will not get any better for a sub for the price.

Pros: Lightweight, easy on the eyes, didn't take up much space in my trunk, doesn't need much power to run.

Cons: Basic commercial wire connections, single voice coil.

Pros: Bass is tight and solid.

Cons: None

Clean and Tight

Eric B from Arlington Heights, IL on 12/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased two of the Polk 1040's and installed them in a sealed Sound Ordinance box. The subs are wired in parallel (2 ohms) and driven by an Alpine MRV-M500 amp (500 x 1 @ 2 ohms). Vehicle is a 2006 Civic Sedan. Overall I'm very impressed with the sound quality, it's clean and tight. I previously had the Sound Ordinance B-8P and found the bass to be very muddy. I really like how clean the Polk 1040's sound and how well they compliment the 6.5" Polk Dxi full range speakers. Some have complained about the spade terminals on the speakers, I soldered the speaker wire to the terminals which I think is the best method so that's really not an issue for me. The only complaint I have are the db10g speaker covers that Polk sells. They are the only cover I knew would work with these speakers but they are very expensive and look a little silly.

Pros: Clean, tight sound. Great price

Cons: Matching speaker grills are very expense

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start off by saying I was replacing 2 JL audio 10W3s and finally blew up after many years of pounding. I was looking for an affordable subwoofer to throw into my sealed JL audio Stealthbox for my 2002 Jeep grand Cherokee Limited. I Purchased This sub on Black Friday for 40 bucks. First impressions of the sub were excellent. Good looking, Good quality, and has some good weight to it and a good size magnet. After installing the sub I am still happy with it. Sounds very clean and has some great bass. Perfect 10" budget sub. Adds the perfect amount of boom and quality to my music. For the 40 dollar price tag I give this sub a 5/5.

Pros: Affordable, Great sound, Good quaiity

These subs look great and sound great as well. The price makes them a great deal and are very shallow for a non-shallow sub. A great option for small areas. My only complaint would be the spade terminals. I would prefer a screw down instead.

Pros: Good looks and sturdy built. Sound great! Great price.

Cons: Spade terminals are dated.

I picked up this woofer based on the sale email that came out the other week. Always liked Polk Audio and decided to try this woofer with a ported box. All I can say is wow! $40 is an awesome price, but this is one heck of a sub - you can tell it is quality just by looking at it and picking it up (its heavy). Once attached to a JL sub amp (200w at 4ohms), I realized that it was super tight and yet pushed out some low bass, easily on bar with the dual JL 10" box I have in my car now.

Pros: Price Sound Power Handling Construction Excursion

Best sounding and hardest hitting Ten inch subwoofer I have ever owned! Do not let the price discourage you, just install this product into a vented enclosure with an internal volume around 1.1-1.3 and you will experience what I'm writing about. I only have one of these subs in my vehicle, so I can only imagine what 2 or more could sound like! Running 200 watts RMS to it via the Sound Ordnance M-2100 amplifier.

I was looking for a mild increase in the bass level of my factory sound system in my 2013 Mustang GT. I paired this with a bridged 2-channel amp puting out 160 watts RMS. It fit the bill perfectly. Perfectly compliments the existing 8" subs in the front doors by adding some lower bass.

Pros: Inexpensive, good quality

Cons: no grill

If you are looking for a great value and some great sound, look no more. Purchased these on sale. Their specs are better than average in my opinion. Xmax especially is off the chart. Their tonal balance is nice and smooth, bordering on warm. However, let's keep it real. If you are looking to move some air, stay on budget and rattle loose every panel in your car, then these fit the bill nicely. I have two installed into a 2.2 cubic foot ported enclosure, powered by an Alpine MRV-M500(494w RMS at 14.4v). Results: great sound and 140.6dB at the windshield. This is only the beginning;)

Pros: Sound, price

Cons: Just average looks

I built a box to nearly the exact specs from the manufacturer. The bass sounds tight and loud. I am giving it 300 watts RMS. It can handle very low frequency, but I have it getting 200 hz and below, and it gives good punch too.

Pros: Value, strong lows, but also punch

Cons: single voice coil

Myself like another reviewer have always used another brand of subs. After reading all the reviews....decided to give this Polk a try. Wow! This thing hits hard! I actually had to turn down my line driver. Thought the rear deck panel was gonna come loose, lol. I'm using a ported box with a 500 watt Rockford amp. I also have a line driver with the bass compensation feature to make up for the roll off of the bass from the factory head unit. (bought here at Crutchfield too). Sub sounds great. Anyone on the fence about getting this should give it a try!

Phenomenal product... great sub that packs a decent punch for a 10". Build quality is right up there with quality rubber and decent hardware, however I'm giving this a (4) on build quality because of the spade connectors. Throwing in connector clips or spring loaded post would have gone a long way and saved a great deal of time...

Pros: great sub, packs a decent punch for the money

Cons: spade connectors

I have 2 of these in a sealed box in a gmc jimmy. They produce quite a bit of sound for a pair of tens, tight accurate bass. They won't blast you out of the truck, but sound as good as many twelve inch drivers. I am powering mine with an MTX 1500dx amp, about 800 watts of old school power! I also have a pair of polk audio MM 15's, they however were too much for my truck hence these fill the bill nicely without taking up my whole cargo area. Overall I am very satisfied with these drivers!

Pros: High output for driver size, tight accurate bass

Cons: None that I can think of

My 2010 Ranger extended cab has one of these in a sealed box behind the driver's seat pointed toward the bed powered by a Kicker CX 300w RMS amp with an entry level Clarion deck. I had it professionally installed and I am blown away by what a sub does for your system. I replaced all four OEM speakers with Kicker DXs before the sub/amp went in, and was left wholly unsatisfied. This sub with the amp EXPONENTIALLY improves the entire quality and volume of the whole system as a whole. I was totally amazed, and couldn't be more pleased. I can't speak to how this compares to other subs, only to how my little truck sounds better than 99 percent of cars on the road now that I have it.

All i know is it is freaking loud. Im running them in my hatchback civic. Thanks troy for hooking me up.

Pros: Soft at first, but when you beat them they have deep bass

Huge Upgrade in SQ, not in Price

Keith from Citrus Heights, CA on 4/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered two of these subs and matching SO box to upgrade from my previous Sony Mobile ES 12" and matching box that I purchased from CR over 10 years ago. Though it was still working I wanted punchier bass, more clarity, and more volume from my Kicker ZX400.1. These subs delivered all of this and for both subs and the SO box - the cost is about 1/2 of my previous setup. I am amazed that despite the Freq resp. being about 10 Hz. higher, these get down just as low, but also maintain much more punch throughout the spectrum and are clear at all volumes. They look and sound great, and are not expensive - which is a very winning combination. Compared to my 12" these are night and day. Don't let their inexpensive price fool you, Polk always comes through with great SQ at all price points. Oh - and even right out of the box they sounded great - but after about a month of the break in period, it has only improved with. My only compliant was that they don't have spring clips, but that is minor and only matters with the first installation. Get 'em.

Pros: SQ, frequency response, punch, low price, CL discount

Cons: no spring terminals

I have good tweeters and door speakers so I can hear the music clearly but the sub does produce good sound quality as well as powerful hits. Simple to use and install. I like the chrome looking lettering and they look very cool and well built. I've blasted these things as hard as my radio would go and they still sounded perfect. I bought two of these and put them in my 99 Pontiac grand am. They are being powered by a Pioneer GM-D8500M Mono sub that I also bought from Crutchfield. I put them in two self-built boxes. They sound pretty good, nice lows and very loud. They were very easy to put in and very good build quality. This was my first sound system build and I am glad I went with polk subs and speakers. These speakers keep up with my friends two 12" subs so what more could someone ask for. I put one in a sealed box, maybe .75 cu ft with a 400w Hifonics amp, broke it in as you're supposed to and its great! Reminds me of my old Infinity Perfects, except they get louder and it hasn't burnt up even with extra power. Remains loud and clear over highway road noise in my 1990 corolla! More so than my new CVR12, I miss that Polk!

Pros: Great sounding, great lows, high volume, best-in-class if your going sealed.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We installed these speakers in a 2008 Mazda 6 about four months ago. We wanted a pair of 10-inch speakers to move a lot of air without eating up the entire trunk to do it. We built our own sealed enclosure to custom fit it behind one side of the folding rear seat, with the speakers facing the rear ( get the "Car Stereo Cookbook 2nd Edition by Mark Rumreich" from Crutchfield if you're thinking of building your own enclosure, you'll be glad you did). Wow these low-cost subs kick some serious bass! No booming or rattles, heart pounding sound at high volumes, yet sound you can still feel at whisper levels.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my Jeep Rubicon in a Stealh-Pod enclosure and it sounds fantastic. It's been only a few weeks since installation so, I'm sure that it'll sound even better after the break-in period. I had never used Polk audio subs or speakers and now I wish I had done so years ago. You won't be disappointed.

Features

Poly Cone: The DXi series subs use a durable polymer composite cone. The cone is both lightweight and rigid, and will withstand the harsh automobile environment.

Butyl Rubber Surround: The butyl rubber surround is resistant to extremes in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight for excellent long term reliability.

Dynamic Balance Driver Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized: For a driver to reproduce complex sounds accurately, the cone must move exactly the same distance and manner in both directions. The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Polk optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Break-In Period: Subwoofers will achieve optimal performance once they are thoroughly broken-in. To break in a new DXi sub play music through it for 20 to 30 hours at moderate levels.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.66 cubic feet.

Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.25 cubic feet using a 4" diameter x 12" long port.

Bandpass Box Volume: Polk recommends a bandpass enclosure with a 0.80 cubic foot sealed rear chamber and a 0.85 cubic foot ported front chamber with 4" diameter x 9" long port.

I think you will be pleased with how they sound, I love mine! Good luck! [ WESLEY  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Sealed or ported? If ported what frequency? [ SEAN  Jan 19, 2014 ]
It'll still sound great! I have mine in an old Rockford fosgate box with a kenwood 1100 watt amp bridged & it pounds like mad [ TRAVIS  Jan 19, 2014 ]
They should work well, if the screw holes still provide a nice sealed, tight install. If not, turn the sub so that you can make new screw holes in between the old ones, and fill the previous holes. For a nice tight seal. If you have a good seal you should be able to push the sub in, (in a sealed box) and it should take a few seconds to rise, not instantly snap back. [ ROBERT  Jan 19, 2014 ]
I would guess it depends on what type of music you listen to. I purchased 2 of these subs and received a free sealed sound ordinance box with them. I have them hooked up to a 500w class d alpine mono amp bridged and am extremely satisfied with the tight bass. I couldn't choose which box since it was free but I listen to all types rock plus some rap. Obviously you are pushing much more through these than me in my '01 Cavalier but I think you could go either way. Look up in Crutchfield what the difference is between the 2 but I think you get a tighter punch through the sealed. [ DANIEL  Jan 10, 2014 ]
Thanks for the info... [ Ray  Jan 01, 2014 ]
Thanks [ Ray  Jan 01, 2014 ]
I used this speaker in a large metal locomotive model. I used a ported box. It works very well, and I've had many complements from the system. [ DAVID  Dec 30, 2013 ]
I put them in the sealed box that came with the speakers but when I switched to a ported box they really boom! [ STEPHEN  Dec 30, 2013 ]
I'm currently using them in a freeair install and they sound awesome...... Very good subwoofer for the money highly recommend them .... They hit hard n tight at 50Hz [ EMMETTE  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Hey Ray. I bought a Sound Ordnance BB102-75S Double 10" Sealed Box .76 cu.ft. because I prefer slightly less but tighter more well defined bass. If you simply want the most bass get a ported box. [ DAVID E  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Don't use the lanzar amp it will not sound god at all. You should buy a sound ordinance m-1500 amp. That amp sounds so good hooked up to these subs and slam nice. Now this amp will tweak down to 2ohm load by it self so you just need to hook the subs in the box positive red and negative black. And the amp does the rest so no crossing wires in the box. It has been a great setup so far. I used a sealed box but depending on what you listen to you would go either way. I think it hits deeper notes ported and higher notes sealed. So if your looking for the mirror to come off get a ported box. Good luck. [ GABRIEL  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Mine r in sealed and they pound [ JOSHUA  Dec 30, 2013 ]
