Polk Audio DXi 1240 subwoofer

Go ahead, circle the parking lot till your favorite song is over. Polk Audio's DXi Series subs will make you want to hit "repeat" so you can hear it all over again. Polk uses a high-tech approach and ideal materials to create subs that will add serious impact to your tunes.

Exacting standards — precise engineering where it counts

The DXi 1240DVC 12" sub features a stiff polymer composite cone and sturdy large roll butyl rubber surround, so you can ride the bass wave for years to come. Engineers at Polk analyze drivers in motion to ensure that cone movement is even and precise, so you'll get impressive thump with minimal distortion. Polk also uses laser imaging to craft woofer cones that are perfectly balanced to resist distortion-causing resonances.

The dual 4-ohm voice coils allow you to wire your system to draw maximum power from your mono amp or to hook up multiple subs safely. Pair this sub with the right amp and enclosure, then strap yourself in for a serious low-frequency ride.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 270 and 540 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

I was skeptical. Especially after smoking a set of Polk mm 1240. Installed with1000.1d Polk amp running 1 ohm. The mm speakers were weak to say the least. Considering the are a fraction of price. You get more bang for your buck. Still breaking in but the sound quality is there. It's a weekend ride that doesn't see many miles, so I've been sound testing pissing off neighbors. Currently running 1ohm setup with these also. Amp is running about 25-30%. Stereo is set at 60 Hertz and -4 for sub break in. I have these all tuned into 4 Polk mm 6.5, 2 Polk mm 4x6 plate, 2 polk dxi 4in amped by 2 polk 5000.5. I still have 2 open sub channels for a couple of 8"s I might install in the rear of wrangler. All in all I'm impressed. At break in levels. Only time will tell. I'm a huge audiophile. I've ran thru decades of manufacturer's. Honestly new to polk and totally shocked with the quality and engineering. The fact that the majority are held to marine standards for true test atmospheres. I run these year round in frame off wrangler restored . 110%. I pound no windows till December snow below 0. People don't understand. Heck....I didn't even get it. Until... I .... Built... One. Polk. Buy it. Impress your senses §§§

Pros: Bang for buck..quality..looks....honestly if yourë reading this I don't need to fluff you, buy them already.

Cons: Your entry level sounds better than your pro line. Please fix this issue. I need a sub and Amp. That will truly handle 2500wt. At .5 ohm. Build it.they will come. :)

I've only had this for about a week so I will review it again down the road, but from the start it's awesome. Running it with a 500 watt Rockford Fosgate mono at 2 ohms, it's seriously impressive for what it is. It's heavy and tight and clean at high volume where the older 4 ohm version DXI washed out... (granted that one was only receiving 300 watts on the same amp) I'm using it in a sealed enclosure, nothing too special.

Pros: Hits HARD, very clean, good range.

Cons: Too early to determine longevity but I think anyone who blew it up in the first week had an error somewhere in their setup. None yet.

This thing is very... Interesting... At first I hooked it all up in my truck and it just sounded lousy and boring. But then later on I turned it towards my door and covered the port in my box with my hand and it sounded a bit better. So I brought the thing to my basement, sealed my port, and stuffed my box with the polyester stuffing and Boom This Thing Is Amazing! This subwoofer is one of the best I have heard for such a low wattage and a low price! I would recommend this thing to anyone who is looking for a powerful sound at a low price! Please make your box the right size though, didn't think it would matter but it does

Pros: Powerful, low price, good build quality, Heavy=big heavy duty magnet

Cons: Doesn't sound right without the perfect sized box

I bought two of these from a local shop, mostly just because I was impatient and din't want to wait for them to be shipped, but I paid the same price a piece. I installed them in a sealed dual 12" box from the same shop, and they sound wonderful. I have had them running off of a Rockford Fosgate amp. The only gripe that I had with them was that the pre-drilled holes on one of the subs wasn't quite aligned with the subwoofer surround, making it a little tricky to mount that one into the sub-box, but other than that these have been running fine for a solid three months. These can get extremely loud, yet stay very clear, and always reach the deepest parts of any song. Very good value and performance for the cost of entry. Also, I see a lot of reviews on here of people's subs blowing out after a small amount of usage, there are so many factors that could be causing this, and subs rarely just blow up on their own. Check your amp, terminals, gain settings, because all of those things can cause you to blow out your sub woofer, the same goes for all speakers.

Pros: Cheap, Good Looking, Sound Wonderful, Very Handles All genres of Music Well (in a sealed box)

Cons: Slight misalignment of Sub-surround with metal casing.

Ok so I bought this subwoofer at a big box store, and when It was installed it was amazing and I only kept it at 1/3 power, and a week later it stoped working while I was driving so I pulled over at a gas station and looked at my box and smoke was coming out of it and my subs were blown

I haven't had a single problem with this sub. I first built a .88 cuft sealed box, and it sounded really good, but the seal wasn't perfect. so when i rebuilt the box i built a ported box to polks specifications, and without changing the amp settings at all it went a good sub to a superb sub. It's loud, its precise, it can hit harder than a bruce lee, and just as fast. I keep it toned down most of the time, but when some "cool" kid rolls up next to me with his sloppy bass, i grab the remote and show him how its done.

Pros: Big, Fast, Precise, Good price, I'm not an audio expert, so i couldn't really ask for more.

Cons: It's big. and needs a big ported box. but hey, that's not really a con, now is it?

Replaced a JBL sub with comparable RMS @ 4 ohms. All else equal, this subwoofer provides a cleaner bass and a punchier thump. Definitely recommend for the price, can't go wrong with Polk quality and sound.

Pros: Thump factor, clean bass

Cons: None

Dust cover, low end and top mount depth reduction are an improvement over the previous DXI version. I was interested in SQL and placed mine in a .88cu ft sealed enclosure as recommended by both Crutchfield and my manual. Don't bother asking either Polk or Crutchfield for the actual displacement of the driver as neither had the answer. My DXI is powered by an Infinity 1300a Mono amp at a 2ohm load both of which are residing in the trunk of my WRX sedan. Sounds great and hits with authority.

Pros: Price, lower top mount depth, sound quality,

Cons: No binding posts but this is minor since I solder all my speaker connections

I hope I received the one bad one in the group. I had the sub installed for three days before it blew up. On the day it fried itself, the radio was only playing for 10 minutes. It never sounded right from the start. I had to have my Alpine up to 15 out of 30 before I could even hear it and then it stopped going up in loudness between 23-25 that was the first sigh of trouble. I have had to send back stuff before and never had a problem so it was not a risk. Better luck next time. I am not sure if I am goin for an exchange or a new product????

Pros: The sound was rich and firm. A better sound than I thought I was going to get for the price

Cons: It blew up.

Features

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4Ω voice coils, offering wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Polypropylene Cone: The DXi series subs use a durable polypropylene cone. The cone is both lightweight and rigid, and will withstand the harsh automobile environment.

Dynamic Balance Driver Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized: For a driver to reproduce complex sounds accurately, the cone must move exactly the same distance and manner in both directions. The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Polk optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Break-In Period: Subwoofers will achieve optimal performance once they are thoroughly broken-in. To break in a new DXi sub play music through it for 20 to 30 hours at moderate levels.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.88 cubic feet.

Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.5 cubic feet using a 4" diameter x 10" long port.

Bandpass Box Volume: Polk recommends a bandpass enclosure with a 1.0 cubic foot sealed rear chamber and a 1.15 cubic foot ported front chamber with 4" diameter x 12" long port.
