Great Speakers

Written By khack, Norfolk, VA on Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two sets of these to replace the stock speakers in an '06 Durango. I recently ordered and installed a new head unit that was not sounding too good on the old factory speakers. After installing these speakers WHAT.A.DIFFERENCE! The speakers deliver great highs and mids, with enough bass to round out the sound. The tweeters are on a swivel, which allowed me to direct the sound from the door speakers up to head level. With the wire harnesses and speaker mounts shipped free with the order, installation was a breeze.

Pros: Great sound Easy installation with Crutchfield's directions and free supplied mounts and wire harnesses.

Cons: none, I am very happy

DXi525 replacement in Acura Integra

Written By MikeK, San Diego, CA on Monday, March 17, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great replacement for my 20 year old factory cones. Originals had deteriorated badly so any new speaker would have resulted in major improvement. However since I had recently replaced rears with Polk cones, the DXi525s were logical choice. Net result is incredible return to great sound. Very satisfied with quality of the Polk speakers.

Pros: Great sound for the price. Wiring adapters were a big plus.

Cons: Had to remove front door panels and cut out plastic speaker housing in door to fit speakers. This was forewarned in the installation tips but instruction sheet did not detail panel removal in sufficient detail. Suggest they update instructions to show locations of mounting pins in door panel.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

very nice overall sound. these replaced the blown out door speakers in a 2004 Mustang 40th Anniversary GT. the car came with the Mach 1000 factory installed audio system, so what you actually hear coming out of these Polk Audio speakers are low to mid frequency. they are just fine for that. the door-sill tweeters are in good shape, and the trunk is full of amps and subs.

Pros: got these on the ding 'n dent special for a good price. they arrived w/o a scratch! only the box had a dent in it. they don't break up, even at high volume. the only distortion is the amp clipping when turned all the way up. everything fit perfectly. what an awesome deal.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice speakers for the money. Separation is excellent, clarity is very good. I know some people said the bass was weak. I don't think that's an issue. If you're looking for door rattling bass then you probably should be looking for something bigger than a 5 1/4". The one negative I've experienced is distortion at high volume. My Kenwood head unit goes up to 35, I start getting distortion around 32. I like loud music and 32 is higher than I'd ever go, just to put that in some perspective.

Pros: very clear good sound great price

Cons: distortion at high volume

These speakers are way better than the factory ones. I have a 07 civic si which has a decent system, I finally had a speaker blow and replaced with these. I ordered 5.25 inch speakers, factory were 6.5 I did loose a bit of bass out of them but the highs and mods are way you better. No I have to replace the rest of the speakers!!!!!!. I was amazed at the quality and weight difference the stock ones were soon cheap looking. I may upgrade the fronts back to factory size in future and do deck speakers as well. The install sheet was great and easy to follow good pictures. The install was pretty simple and brackets worked well and speaker adapters were awesome. No cutting and splicing. Would buy these again non problem.

I got these to replace the stock speakers in my motorcycle. They are a big step up from the stock speakers. The true test won't come until the snow and ice melts and I can see what they sound like at highway speeds. In the garage they're great.

Pros: High quality at a good price.

Cons: Can't think of any.

be sure to use an amp!

Written By Bheinbaugh, Dayton Ohio on Sunday, January 19, 2014

I initially used these speakers with my civic stock head unit and they sounded like a tin can. Next I upgraded to a double din pioneer head unit and the sound became so so. Finally I went full system and decided to get an amp and wow! No complains. Very smooth sound and pleasant to listen to at quiet and loud volumes. Excellent speakers if you give them the proper juice.

Great sound for the price, but the speaker aren't louder than Toyota highlander cheap factory speakers. The built of the speaker looks heavy duty and built with excellent materials, I was expecting more sound coming out the speakers but not less than the factory speakers built with cheap materials.

Pros: Nice and rich sound, you can definitely hear music as is meant to be hear

good speakers, improved clarity, quality and bass response. since stock grills were broken I had to modify the included grills to fit, no big deal just some time with a 3" wheel on a die grinder to trim 1/4" off the outside rim, fits perfect and looks great since you cant see the cut because of the recess in the sound bar. Other than that super easy install. good upgrade from factory 10 year old factory speakers

Pros: improved clarity, quality and bass response good price

Cons: could make grills slightly smaller for easier install

Written By Victor, Richmond CA on Wednesday, December 04, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the sale price, this is a bargain. They sound good except they are a little harsh at high volumes. The highs and bass are OK but I think the mid range is below average. If you like very loud music, I suggest looking elsewhere. If you listen to your music at medium to low volumes, then I would recommend them. Would I buy them again? The answer is yes. Would I buy them at the regular price? The answer is probably not because the mid range is below average and I prefer speakers with good highs and midrange sound.

Pros: This price will get you cheap speakers but they don't sound cheap.

Cons: The mid range is below average but acceptable.

Great factory replacement

Written By Moogvo, Cameron, North Carolina on Tuesday, December 03, 2013

These are great little speakers for the money. I bought these because I heard "rattling" in my door speakers. They sat in the trunk for 2 weeks before I installed them. Crutchfield supplies everything you need to get these installed. They even included wires with the factory plug on one end and push terminals on the speaker end so I didn't have to cut my car wiring. Shipping was lightening fast as usual and I am again a totally happy customer. Nice work guys (and gals)!

Pros: Perfect fit, great sound. I am totally happy with these! The website said I would need some sort of a bracket to make these fit, but they fit right in place and bolted up fine with no other brackets.

Cons: My car has tweeters built into the door that were wired to the original speakers. I didn't get a wiring adapter for those, but these speakers have a separate tweeter built into them anyway, so I didn't bother to hook up the door tweets. They sound perfectly fine as they are.

Pros: Ranges sound easy to install

Polk DXI 5.25- Great speakers!

Written By wills95, USA on Sunday, August 04, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. Sounds so much better than the stock door speakers, even with Pontiac's stupid open-back enclosures. The tweeters are also slightly directional and can be aimed towards the listener. Great midbass and treble definition. These really excel in acoustic guitar. Also keep in mind these are slightly too big for a 1995 grand prix and I was only able to screw in 3 screws.

Pros: Great warm sound Easy install

Cons: Didn't quite fit in my doors, but thats my problem. I made them fit.

Better than Stock

Written By Geoff, Salt Lake City, UT on Wednesday, June 05, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired these (in the sound bar) with Polk Audio DXi460 (in the dash). I was pleasantly surprised by the change from my stock speakers - they were 13 years old. They play louder before distorting (I'm sure the new head unit helps with that) and have a better range. They do leave me really wanting to add a sub, but alas, in a 2000 jeep wrangler, with as often as I'm using it with the seat out hauling what little I can, I don't have the space or inclination to to uninstall and reinstall a sub.

Pros: better than stock

Cons: not enough bass

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in my Jeep Wrangler to replace the stockies in the overhead sound bar. Speakers are very crisp and give a really detailed sound quality. I mixed these with a pair of the DXi400 4" components for the dash. They match great. After I got everything dialed in with the head unit, there's no obvious difference between the two. Just a focused auidio image. I'm not sure how they handle low end on their own, as I have a 8" Bazooka tube for all the low end. But, when I crank everything up there's no distortion and loud enough even with the top and doors off.

Pros: Easy factory replacement with included/added wiring harnesses. Clarity. Economic value.

Cons: These are advertised as 100% fit for the wrangler but there's a little bit more work than plug 'n play... The sound bar in the Jeep Wrangler TJ is designed in such a way that original grills must be used. I had to shave some of the plastic off the back of the stock grill for them to fit properly. Might work fine without this step, but there will definitely be pressure on the built-on tweeter grill.

Pros: Look great, sound great. Good tweeters with built-in crossover, and the tweeters can be adjusted to point in different directions.

Cons: Could not use the included speaker grills, so had to use my stock grills (although I knew this when I bought them - the Crutchfield website stated so).

Fit well in a tight space in my 1039 Chevy Hot Rod

Written By ROliver, Dallas, TX on Monday, May 13, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a difficult area to fit rear speakers in the narrow package tray in my 1939 Chevy Hot Rod. These fit the bill perfectly and sound great along with the larger Polk Audio DXi650 in the front Kick Panels. All (4) speakers are efficient and can provide a lot of volumn to overcome the loud car, wind noise and loud exhaust driven ony by the Alpine 18watt RMS CD/AM/FA/iPod head unit. I am running a 200w JL Audio Amp & 10" JL Audio subwolfer in the trunk to produce the low end and it a great combinitation.

Pros: Directional Tweeter really makes a difference and the efficiency eliminates the need for a power amp

Cons: The Speaker grill make the speakers a little more difficult to install because the plastic grill frame must be screwed in with the speaker. The wire mess grill is a friction fit into the plastic frame and is subject to distortion and denting.

Great speakers, they were super easy to install, but make sure to point the tweeters at you!!!! I forgot to do this and I put my door panel back and and have yet to take it off to aim the tweeters. Sounds better than my stock speakers. They fit in my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT perfectly. I only wish I could use the speaker grills it comes with, but sadly you can't do that with most cars.

Pros: sound great easy to install works with stock stereo. fits well in car

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good Speakers with Good sound. I didnt expect much from these speakers as far as bass and i was right, but i didnt get them for that reason. they have good Highs and mids that are very clear and precise. I can barely notice a difference compared to factories at moderate volumes but they make the difference at high volumes in my jeep cherokee. easy to install and crutchfield sent me everything i needed to complete the job. these are 5 1/4 " speakers please dont fool yourself thinking you will get bass out of these. looking back i would have gone with a slighty cheaper pioneer speaker because all they are really good for at this size is Highs and mids.

Pros: Good sound and well built

Cons: Could have went with a cheaper speaker from another brand and got the same result.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have also done a review on the Polk DXi 460p(4"x6" 2-way plate style) and as I said there, extremely pleased with what I bought. These are going in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler(TJ) and for the most part, this Jeep is topless regardless of weather, so the Marine cert was definitely a deciding factor.

The speakers they were replacing are the same size style(5.25" 2-way) Sony Xplod, in which I stated in the other review as well, that I've never been a fan of the quality of sound coming from the line from the get go. $20 more on ANYTHING normally sounds 10x's better. Needless to say, once I installed them, a definite improvement in sound come about. However, they're still being ran off the cheap little Sony Xplod deck, which if it weren't for money at the moment, I'd have ordered an Alpine deck along with the small plug-and-play amp for all four speakers. It will happen, but not in the very near future. As I've also stated, once I get the few items missing from having this system complete(Deck, sub box(yes, I just have 2 10's sitting in my room now with nothing to put them in) amps for ALL the speakers and appropriate other little things I want to make this as complete as possible), I'll post a video if it lets me edit this and do so. If not, look for another post with the YT link. I also used the XTC baffles on these as well. Not going to cut more than a small slit to fit the wires in as once they're on an amp, they'll be cutoff so they don't have bass going to them.

Pros: Even over another brand's aftermarket speakers, these sound WAY better than those and I can only imagine the factory, especially for a 12y/o Jeep.

Cons: The guy that had the Jeep before me cut the rear(soundbar) harnesses off, which means I couldn't use the one supplied. However, he used the correct size connectors on both sides, so it was still a plug-and-play affair when it come to this.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to change out my factory system and speakers on my 97 Jeep Wrangler. Lets face it basically driving around in a tent. Based on the advice of the rep. I went with Kenwood KMM-100u Media Receiver and the Polk Audio DXi 400's and 525. I am writing one review for all three products at once.

I did the install by myself (with a couple of call into the tech line to make sure I was not going to far off base. Word of advice get the install kit. It is a wise investment. The overall installation I spent another $30 but that due to the wiring mess I found once I took the receiver out and had to some splicing. No way Crutchfield could have seen that one coming and yippie I have new volt meter, zip ties and a bunch of butt splices.

DXI400-30+ mins The front speakers went in now problem the install kit worked perfect.

DXi525 - 1 hr + The Roll Bar speakers were a bit a trick due to having to hold the speaker, the grill frame, placing the spacers, screws all while going up and having only two hands. First one was the learning curve and the second one when in pretty quick. All said and done they looked great with the grills on.

KMM-100 3+ hours to finish

This is just a media receiver. The uninstall of the old system (previous owner had an Alpine) was simple. Getting the new on in took a few hours as I had to make a parts run and splice everything together from scratch.

Hooked the battery backup and was good to go.

Pros: Recommendations really worked for the vehicle in question Easy install for one person - Tech support was great to deal with questions I had Instructions were basically spot on The sound difference is remarkable - At 70 mph on the interstate everything is clear and sounds great from music to audio books Looks good in the vehicle

Cons: None at this time on the speakers

Amazing upgrade from stock speakers.

Written By Michael D, Vernon, FL on Monday, March 18, 2013

These speakers are an amazing upgrade from the stock speakers in a 2001 Ford F-150. I can now hear certain nuances and details that were previously unheard in my OEM. If you are upgrading from stock, I can personally guarantee you won't be sorry.

Pros: Absolutely great midrange and highs. Exceptional.

Cons: Can't really call it a con, but as other users have mentioned, it is not a bass beast. Its what you can expect from a 5 1/4" speaker.

Nice and loud 5.25" Polk Audio DXi525

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as replacement speakers for the OEM in my 94 Civic, front door 5.25". The OEM speakers had NO foam surround left and were terribly distorted at even low volume levels. Highs were ok, but any bass would rattle and ruin the music. The Polk Audio DXi 525 are amazing, and not just because the last speakers I had were bad. I bought them for their high sensitivity knowing that I will only be using a JVC Head Unit to power them, and they have not disappointed: very LOUD! Clea, crisp, and a nice addition to the Polk Audio DXi 650 is bought to go with them. NOTE: Crutchfield originally specified that these would not fit behind my stock door grille, but I purchased anyway expecting to have to do some cutting and was very pleased to find that there is plenty of clearance in my 94 Honda Civic sedan. Hopefully Crutchfield will change their specs because these speakers are a great fit!

Pros: loud, inexpensive, easy to install, clean sound

Cons: as much bass as can be expected from 5.25" speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in my front door panels, and they were a very nice addition to my stereo system. For their size they produce great sound, an unexpected bonus was the marine rating which hopefully means they'll be more durable than some of the other options out there.

Pros: Solid build, good sound, marine rating

Cons: A template for installation would be nice for us not putting speakers in a stock location.

Great Speakers for my Wrangler

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers to replace the stock ones in my 2004 Rubicon and they sound great. I used speaker adapters to change the front 4x6's to 5.25's also. They sound very clear and do not get distorted at higher volumes. You would need to add a subwoofer if you don't have one already if you're looking for deep bass. They pair great with my factory subwoofer ,which needs to be upgraded here soon, and my Kenwood reciever. All in all, very happy with my purchase of these Polk speakers!!!

Pros: Easy set up...with the crutchfield provided harness it took no time to install. Both the soundbar and front dask speakers were a breeze.

I want to say these speakers are great, however there just isnt enough Bass. if i increase the Bass i get to much distotion. Maybe i missed a step durring the install. is there something i should know about installing these into a sound bar? I just replaced the fronts with polk hoping to gais some base, ( now having all Polk speakers) and there wasn't any change. Freainds and Family notice the lo performance of these speakers and thats why i'm on here.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I previously purchased a Kenwood system as a replacement for the failing and already pitiful factory sound in my Wrangler. It was better, clearer than the original, but very tinny sounding - grated on my nerves. Just adding two of these Polk speakers in the sound bar made a HUGE difference. Some of the reviewers here say the speakers have weak base, but I found it to be MUCH better than the factory sound and the Kenwood speakers. Across the entire sound spectrum, these Polks are warmer, richer, and provide so much more nuance than what I'm used to. I'm hearing sounds that I never heard before. The same volume setting on my system gives me louder and clearer sound. I gave these speakers a five star rating for VALUE and superb sound quality. I will listen to more music now and love it!

Pros: Absolutely GREAT sound for a reasonable price.

Cons: The metal grill that protects the speaker is a pain to install. Be careful, line it up correctly and it still may bend while being installed. Very irritating!

Solid speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was installed in an old convertible - not a great environment for critical listening, so I can't comment on sound quality. But for the price, I'm happy.

It's not obvious that the tweeter is not exactly on center. If you install the speaker so that it's rotated 90 degrees, the grill has to rotate as well.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed speakers in doors of 2007 civic at same time doing dynamat. Only marginally better than the stock speakers. More sepertion, better treble, but a bit thin with moderate mid range and limited bass. Okay for front doors and stock player but would consider poor choice for rear speakers or upgraded player/amp.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Very limited bass

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit perfectly in the soundbar in a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. Need more speaker in a Jeep. Distortion comes in at around half power on a ALpine receiver. Shipping with Crutchfield is phenomenal. Ordered one day, received the next day.

Pros: Fits perfectly.

Cons: Not much bass for a 5.25 Speaker. Distorts at mid power.

I had already replaced the factory unit with an Alpine receiver and Polk speakers in the dash. It sounded pretty good. I went ahead an replaced the roll bar speakers with these Polk speakers. It really made the difference. Sounds like music in my Wrangler now.

Pros: easy to install. sounds great.

Cons: can't think of any

Teh shipping with Crutchfiled is unbelieveable. Order placed Monday at 5pm est email sent at 8pm est and product at door wed afternoon. Well for teh speakers they sound great, they are on an Electraglide (motorcycle) only two issues I had was there were no conncectors or wire that came with them and the size f terminal is those tiny tiny lil terminals. Other issue is they fit the bike but due to the terminals on the bottom it interfered with structual support of fairing o had to put them in upside down so now POLK dispays upside down from the fron view of the bike, kinda aggravates me to be honest.

Perfect for Wranglers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently traded in my beloved 2003 Wrangler (215,000 miles) for another Wrangler with far less miles. It still had the factory speakers in the roll bar so I immediately replaced them with these Polk speakers due to the great reviews. Wow! There is a HUGE difference in sound! It took 15-20 minutes to complete the speaker swap out. I am going to put two more in the front dash then add a subwoofer (a MUST!) in back for an excellent sounding Wrangler stereo system that will rival the sound from the nine-year old Infinity system I had in my old Jeep. These speakers are excellent for Wranglers, top up or down!

Pros: Clear, clean, distortion-free mids and highs (a tad more base than factory speakers, but still need a subwoofer). Simple installation with a screwdriver.

Cons: Cost. Should have bought all four. I bought the first pair for less money two weeks ago.

Jeep Wrangler Owners LOOK NO FURTHER!

Written By .:eMETAL:., Midcoast, Maine on Monday, March 26, 2012

Installed in a 99 Jeep Wrangler TJ. These in the roll bar paired with a Pioneer 4400HD receiver and some Polk DXi400 in the dash and WOW! No problem hearing anything with the top down and the doors off. Wrangler owners look no further, do this setup and be done for an all around low cost.

There aren't really any lows with these but that's not what these are for, if you're looking for hard hitting bass
