Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchasing a pair of 6.5" speakers is a tough decision due to there being so many brands. I chose the Polk Audio DXi650 speakers due to the Polk name and the overall reviews, as well as they were on sale ($50). Later I purchased a set of JBL 6 X 9's for the rear deck of my vehicle. The reviews were stellar and highlighted the bass response of the speakers. I was pleasantly impressed with the life-like sound from the mids and highs, but the bass response was average at best (no better than a set of pioneers or kenwood speakers). In comparison the JBL speakers are phenomenal. The bass is stellar, and the mids and highs are equivalent to the Polk speakers. In retrospect I wish I had gone ahead and paid more for a set of 6.5" JBL speakers for the front. JBL out performs Polk by a landslide.

Pros: I was pleasantly impressed with the life-like sound from the mids and highs.

Cons: The bass response was average at best (no better than a set of pioneers or kenwood speakers).

I am restoring my 1988 Bayliner Boat and I bought these speakers for my upgraded sound system. The installation was the easiest thing I have done in restoring my boat! The sound quality of these speakers is a vast improvement over my old ones. I can hear them clearly over engine noise, great bass and clean highs. Another Crutchfield winner!

Excellent Speakers

Written By Rich, Palmyra, VA on Monday, June 10, 2013

I have four of these speakers paired with the Alpine CDE-HD149BT. Talk about a clear crisp sound! I rarely push the volume up and at low levels, the Polks sound decent and have adequate bass response. But when a special song comes along and the volume gets pushed up, that's when these speakers really do shine. Depending on how you have your radio set (bass & treble) these Polk's really do offer a very clear and quality sound with no distortion (at least no distortion and the volume level I use which is loud enough, lol).

Pros: Clear & crisp with no distortion

Cons: None.

Purchased these as replacement front speakers in my pickup, Great sound!! I purchased when Crutchfield was having a sale with $25 off the price - got a great deal!! Fit perfect and complement my new Polk rear DXi460p speakers and Pioneer DEH-80 PRS stereo - great setup - well satisfied!!

Pros: Great sound - easy install - the adapters Crutchfield supplies hooks right to the factory wiring without any cutting of the wires!

Cons: None

Great Speakers!

Written By JoeyC, Nampa, ID on Tuesday, June 04, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a Great sounding speaker! Fairly broad frequency range and good lows for such a small speaker. Only issue I had was that they didn't fit the mounting bracket that Crutchfield sent with them.

Pros: Great sound, affordable upgrade to stock speakers!

Cons: Didn't fit metal mounting brackets sent by Crutchfield, had to use another mounting adapter that came with the speakers, then they stuck out too far to get the door panel on. Luckily my dad has a mig welder, ended up cutting the metal bracket legs down and then spot welding them so I could get the door panels on. Would be nice to have more control of highs, like a switch of dB pad similar to whats on the Infinity's.

Great sound for a 1939 Chevy Hot Rod

Written By ROliver, Dallas, TX on Monday, May 13, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very efficient great sounding spealers with adjustable directional tweeter. I am running (2) of these in the front and (2) of the slightly smaller DXi 525 in the rear package tray due to limited space. They sound great running from 18watt RMS Alpine CD.AM/FM/Ipod head unit along with a separate 200 JL Audio amp and JL Audio 10" subwolfer. The 4 directional tweeters really brighten up the sound and make it easy to balance the audio for the best sound over a variety of different types of music. From Michael Jackson to Acoustic guitar Folk Music these sound great along with a subwolfet to carry the low end.

Pros: Directional tweeter makes a big difference with the speakers mounter in the kick panels which is the only option in my 1939 Chevy Custom. Speaker efficiency eliminated the need for a separate amplifier on the main speakers. Great dynamic range.

Cons: A little more difficult to install than others I have installed due to the way the grill frame has to mount with the speaker screws. The wire mesh grill friction fits into the grill frame after the speaker and frame are mounted. It's easy to distort the wire mesh. Also drilling the screw holes is critical because there is no flxibility in the holes in the plastic speaker grill frame.

Nice speaker for the money. If you want deeper base; you need a sub.. I instaled these in a 2001 Beetle. The back speakers were blown. They took 45 minutes to install from start to end. That was very fast bacause the "local" install guy told me to expect well over a hour. I estimate the speaker adaptors saved me at least 15 minutes.

Things started to sound better after I pulled out the factory tape deck and went to my 15 year old Apline 4x40 with BBE. I have no amp and have no intention. There is more than emough volume on the highway with the windows and sunroof open.

Pros: East to install. Nice reange

Cons: None

I put two pair of those DXi 650 into my 2013 Chevy Equinox. I drive them with only factory head unit without Amp. They are more than I expected for the money. Very good and tight bass, so if you are looking for factory replacement and don't expect excessive boom, here is the right one. And crutchfield makes the installation much easier with speaker harness.

Pros: Tight bass, easy to drive. Worth every penny!

Pros: -Overall Quality -Easy Installation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just bought two pair of Polk Audio DXi 650 coaxial speakers for my Infiniti G35 sedan to replace the OEM Bose trash that came with the vehicle. I kept the factory head unit but replaced the amp with a Sony XDP MU110 Digital Processing unit and added two Polk Audio 10" subs hooked up to a 500 watt amp in the trunk. All items bought from Crutchfield at great prices. I have been an audio music semi-pro for 40 years and have never experienced better car audio sound than this! With the help of the Crutchfield geeks, installation of the components was less burdensome than it could have been dealing with changes necessary to the original Bose system. Can't beat any of these items for sound and quality for the price. Check it out with some Vivaldi, Steely Dan (Aja) or Pink Floyd!

Pros: Great bass, great brilliance and presence!

Polk Audio DXi650's

Written By MarkJ, Orange County, CA on Monday, April 08, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had just installed an Alpine/Polk Audio combination in my '93 Honda Civic. The vehicle is used as a commuter car where I spend 2,000 miles/month. The sound was great but I wanted an even better sound. Working with Bob in the Advisor's group he suggested matching the existing Polk Audio DXi650's with an additional pair or Polk650s. I wasn't willing to add an Amp to the car and this combination worked our great. The sound improved tremendously working straight off the deck without any power enhancements. The installation was a little tricky since the rear deck of the Civic was not originally outfitted with speakers. Honda no longer sells the speaker covers for a '93 but Bob assured me if there was a problem Crutchfield would allow me to return the speakers regardless. Well with a few tools and some time in the trunk I am happy to say the 4 Polk Audio speakers are working just fine.

Thanks for all of your help and advice.

Pros: Clarity within my power range, size, and ease of installation

Cons: None

You cannot go wrong with these speakers. This is my third set of the DXi series speakers. The first two sets were to replace the factory speakers in my 02 Silverado (5-1/4" front, 4"x6" rear), and the third set for my 96 Geo Tracker. These things blow factory speakers away. They provide better bass, and just a better all around sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers as replacements to OEM 6.5" Honda Civic rear desk speakers to complement a 12" Rockford Fosgate subwoofer. I chose these because 1) highest sensitivity in the sub- $100 price range, 2) could find matching Polk 5.25" with equally high sensitivity, 3) on sale at Crutchfield. Now that the speakers have had some time to warm up and break in, they sound fantastic! To anyone that says not enough bass: what do you expect from sub- $100 6.5"? If you are looking for strong bass without a subwoofer than up your size to 6x9. These sound crisp, clear, have plenty of mid-range freq. bass to complement my subwoofer bass range, and are exactly what I wanted- LOUD. I can play at audio levels almost painful to my ears and not hear even the slightest bit of distortion, and that's being powered solely by the head unit... quite impressive really. Overall- Highly recommend these speakers to anyone who wants loud audio that stays clear at high volumes and sounds equally clean at mid to low volumes

Pros: Loud, value, easy install

Cons: as much bass as can be expected from 6.5" spakers

Great speakers for '99 Jeep TJ

Written By FrankC, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, January 03, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The speakers aren't a direct drop-in replacement, but the included adapter plate allows these 6.5 in. speakers to fit in the stock 5 inch speaker location. Some people have stated that they were able to use the stock speakers grills for a "stealth" install, but I didn't try and am happy with the Polk grills. My system was basically stock - head unit, Polk 4 inch front speakers, 6.5 inch speakers in the sound bar, no sub unit or amps. Good speakers + easy install + great price = awesome value!

Pros: Price, quality, value, grills look good.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just finished putting these speakers into the rear doors of my 2011 Santa Fe. I also installed the matching DXi6500 6.5" Component Speaker System in the front doors. They sound great. So smooth and they handle the factory radio without losing sound quality. When you compare the factory installed speakers and these, you cannot help but be excited to hear them once installed, and you wont be disappointed. I bought these speakers for two main reasons. The specs on these, when compared to other speakers in this price range are just plain better. Do the side by side comparison and see for yourself. The second reason was for the many positive reviews by other customers. You cannot ignore so many positive reactions to this series. As for installation, I had viewed a youtube video of a woman replacing the door speakers in her Santa Fe. She had a great idea on how to mount these or any speakers that are stock size. I followed her method and reduced drilling and fitting steps, yet maintained a factory fit. I placed the cross-over for the components in the front doors right next to the power window motor and screwed it into the door frame panel. They went in quickly and professionally, though I am not a pro. I purchased the proper tools to pull the door panels off and save frustration and scratches. It took about 31/2 hours to replace four speakers and two front tweeters. I added a 100 watt, 8 inch bazooka tube to complete the install. Stock radios can sound good!

Pros: Superior sound, good price, ease of installation.

Cons: None.

More Power

Written By Munchiniwa, Lake Mary, FL on Thursday, July 26, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers require a lot more power than the 25w/ch my Kenwood Excelon has. The bass is almost nonexistent, even with it bumped up with the built-in eq. Apparently, they need a LOT of power. On the other hand, the mids and highs were very clear and pleasant. Not that "tinny" sound that some speakers have but very clear and natural.

Pros: Very good mids and highs.

Cons: These speakers require a lot more power than the 25w/ch my Kenwood has. Bass very lacking without an amp (assuming that's the problem).

You will not be sorry if you get these DXi650 speakers. Crutchfield rep Keith really helped me make my decision and I am very thankful. Nice Speakers-Very Satisfied

Written By BillG, So. Maryland on Sunday, April 01, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought DXi 650 and DXi 460's to replace the stock speakers in my '05 Sierra Extended Cab based on "the Adviser's" recommendation. I wanted speakers to drive with a JVC Arsenal 805 that I put in the truck two years ago (no amp or sub-woofer) and wasn't interested in shaking the doors off, just good quality sound at reasonable volumes. The OEMs sounded fine coupled with the JVC until one of them failed, but these Polks are unquestionably better. They give very crisp highs, a more pronounced mid-range and a lot more volume before you get noticeable distortion. The bass won't vibrate the car stopped next to you at a light but it's not bad for a low-powered system. I also opted for the foam baffles, which probably help.

Installation, while not quite a breeze, wasn't awful. I had to drill screw holes as advertised, the hang up was that the cut-outs for the front door speakers have a ridge stamped around the edge that won't let the clips for the screws fit on. I was able to reach inside the door from some of the other cut-outs and use the clips like nuts on the back side of the door metal. As I said, not awful, it just took time and a lot of patience getting my fingers in there (TIPS for Sierra/Silverado owners-make sure the windows are up before you unhook the switches, no room for your hand inside the door otherwise. Pay close attention to where the wiring plugs go when you take the door panels off). From start to finish took a little over 2 hours.

Pros: Crisp, clean sound, plenty of volume if you want it. Bass is not outstanding but certainly adequate. Substantial improvement over OEMs for a very reasonable cost. Great if you just want good tunes at rational volumes. Probably not for Head-Bangers.

Cons: Installation a little trickier than advertised, but not awful (no cutting).

Great sounding speakers. I bought the Polk Audio DXi650 speakers to replace the entirely inadequate OEM speakers the were installed in my new travel trailer. The Polk speakers are a very significant improvement and I'm very satisfied with the result.

Pros: These speakers fit right in to the opening of the OEM speakers and make the OEM audio system sound like one that cost much more.

Cons: The speaker connections were entirely different then the ones on the OEM speakers. Since new connectors weren't included with the Polk speakers, I had to go find some that were close enough to work. I would have rated these speakers with 5 stars if the correct speaker connectors had been included.

Why did I wait so long?

Written By DaveK, Buffalo, NY on Tuesday, October 04, 2011

When the door speaker stopped working in my 2008 Silverado, I finally had an excuse to replace the horrible sounding factory installed speakers. I went straight to Crutchfield and started browsing. Their website made it very easy to narrow my search to speakers that fit my vehicle. I decided on the Polk DXi650 speakers for the doors and the Polk DXi460 for the rears. It is a regular cab truck and I was a bit hesitant on replacing the rears but I'm glad I did. It is really unbelievable the difference these speakers made on the factory installed stereo. Sound is clear and rich with plenty of bass. I'm actually looking forward driving to work tomorrow so I can listen to the new speakers. My only regret is that I didn't do this 3 years ago when I bought the truck.

This set of speakers was an overall good purchase, what they lack on the low end they make up for with extremely clear mids/highs. On a side note add dynamat, it makes a world of difference with these.

Great value for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided on these Polk speakers because I had some experience with Polk Car speakers years ago that was positive. In the meantime I've had pretty involved systems with subs, multiple amps and more "pro" separates. Now it is time to replace some stock truck door speakers and given a small budget these fit the bill. The DXI650's are being driven by an 8300 Pioneer head unit. As for sound- immediately the soundstage is vastly improved with details emerging. Bass is more defined and usable versus the tubby stock units. Do not hesitate if you are replacing stock units. I also like how the tweeter is mounted without a bracket over the top of the woofer cone. It seems to be a cleaner look and not having structure in the way of the woofers output can only help things. The mounting rings included for 6.75" applications work great. I would buy these again.

Best sound in every way

Written By POLK only, South Carolina on Sunday, July 31, 2011

I know that everyone that has researched any kind of car audio is very familiar with the big names like Alpine, etc. However, I have listened to almost every speaker on the market at the same wattage output or close and have come to the realization that POLK speakers have the best quality all around sound. Bass, Mid-Range & Treble. To my ear they are the best for every type of music except for maybe Wrap. The treble allows a cymbol hit to just carry so beautifully. The treble sound is not flat or tinny. The mid range is loud and clear and the bass is sufficient. Honestly, when switching back and forth to any other speaker, all others clearly were missing in quality in some way, and that was comparing to Alpine, Pioneer, Klipch, Jensen, Infinity, Kenwood, Sony and more. The amazing thing, I didn't even need to install a higher wattage amp, just left the factory one in. Of course everyone has a different ear when it comes to speakers but it also matters a bit what you are used to. I think in the long run you can't go wrong with any of the POLK speakers. I read what another person said about having to install POLK's in the front and back but I did not because I get what I need out of the factory back speakers which require less power and the Polks I installed in the front give me enough quality for what me, the driver needs to hear. Also if you do install all four Polks you might feel as though you do need add more power.

99 Dodge Durango with Infinity

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

99 Durango with 6-speaker Infinity sound system. After the woofer surrounds broke, it was time to replace them. My goal was to at least duplicate the sound quality of the original speakers using the rest of the factory system. I'm not the sort that enjoys jaw-rattling bass from a subwoofer, just strong low end from regular door speakers playing higher volume classic rock. I was fairly pleased with the factory setup and wasn't looking to spend a ton of $$.

First I tried these Polk Audio Dxi650's which I had used successfully in another car. Initially I was disappointed (not as much bass and a lot of clipping of the sound level) but I only installed one or two of them to compare to the factory ones. As noted elsewhere, the factory speakers were of the 2-ohm variety. Since the Polk's were 4-ohm, I decided to try the Infinity Kappa 62.9i's with 2- ohm impedance. Surprisingly, those were worse - very little bass and less output.

After letting the Polk's break in and installing all 4 (highly recommended) the sound was very good for the money (very good bass/output and no clipping). Plus if I ever replace the head unit, I'll probably be better off with the Polk's. Build quality isn't the highest and the mid range must be bumped on the equalizer but they fit without any mod's contrary to CF fit guide.

So if you have a rig like mine and are looking for a similar sound and setup, I'd recommend the Polk Audio DXi650's. But install all 4 and let them break in..

Polk Audio DXI650

I have to say that these are great speakers and they haven't been broke in yet!
They have just as much bass as my JL Audio 6x9's!(I don't know what series these
are cause they were already in my truck when I bought it) I installed these Polk
Audio speakers in my 2008 Dodge Ram Quad Cab even though Crutchfield says they
won't fit. But I am not picking them cause I love Crutchfield they are a great
company to deal with!!!!! I had to modify my door panel by drilling new holes
which wasn't too hard just aggravating!lol Anyhow I would recommend these to
anyone they have a great all around sound! Now I would like to try out some Polk
Audio 6x9's!

Not worth the effort

Unless your existing speakers are junk. Mine were not and sounded better than these. Also the screw clips that come with these speakers won't work with the adapters sent for the Silverado Crew Cab, which doesn't sound like much, but was a real pain to try to modify. After several attempts, just threw them away and ended up using # 6 stove bolts which was not very easy either. Then to have them not sound very good with the amp I had installed.

Seem pretty good. Not as bright as I had hoped they would be.

Awesome Speakers

Written By Salai160, Storrs, CT on Tuesday, February 01, 2011

I chose these Polk Audios due to their power abilities, materials, and cost. Based on those three categories these speakers are great. They reproduce a very true sound even at higher volumes. I have these installed in my '99 Silverado and am very pleased with them.

Product Research

High Efficiency Design: The Polk Audio DXi Series speakers feature a high efficiency design; meaning better sound and more volume using less power.

Dynamic Balance Driver Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized Components: For a driver to reproduce complex sounds accurately, the cone must move exactly the same distance and manner in both directions. The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Polk optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Composite Cones: Each Polk DXi 650 speaker features a Dynamic Balance, polymer/mica composite cone woofer. These composite cones feature tremendous stiffness-to mass ratio. Lower mass means faster transients and finer detail.

Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the speaker uses rubber surrounds.

Silk Dome Tweeters: Each Polk DXi 650 speaker features a 3/4" silk/polymer dome tweeter for clear, accurate highs. They can be angled slightly within the housing to compensate for off axis mounting. The tweeters also employ a light-weight neodymium magnet for higher efficiency.

Mounting: Out of the box the DXi 650 is a direct replacement for many standard 6-3/4" applications. Two mounting brackets are included with holes matching standard 6-1/2" (3-hole), Ford 6-1/2" (asymmetrical 4-hole), and various 6-3/4" applications. Without using the mounting brackets the speaker also fits into many standard 6-1/2" openings, but with a four hole pattern is not a direct replacement (new screw holes would need to be drilled; in this instance mounting depth would be 1.986" and mounting height 0.866"; this application does not sort in the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector because using the mounting bracket requires no modification, and is therefore the preferred 6-1/2" mounting method).
