Polk Audio

Our take on the Polk EX357

Polk designed the EX3 Series to deliver audiophile performance, whether they're powered by an in-dash receiver (even a "factory" model) or by an external amp. The EX357 5"x7"/6"x8" speaker pumps out impressive bass from a moisture-resistant mica-filled polymer composite woofer with a durable butyl rubber surround.

A 3/4" soft dome tweeter broadcasts smooth, detailed highs, while the REL (Rotating Elliptical Lens) improves imaging, even from less-than-ideal factory speaker locations. Grilles are not included. (Factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.) 1-year warranty.

Features

Woofers: The moisture-resistant mica-filled polymer composite woofer cones produce full, accurate midbass, while the durable butyl rubber surrounds increase speaker life and improve bass response.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/4" silk dome tweeter for smooth, accurate highs.

Rotating Elliptical Lens: Each tweeter employs a Rotating Elliptical Lens that allows you to redirect and focus the high frequencies for pinpoint imaging and clear detail, even from off-axis factory speaker locations.

Anti-Diffraction Tweeter Post: The Anti-Diffraction Tweeter Posts are shaped like a funnel to minimize driver "bounce back", resulting in less distortion.

Mounting Rings: The supplied plastic mounting rings allow the speakers to be installed in 5"x7" or 6"x8" openings.

polk 5X7

Written By Jason and Leisha, San Angelo, Texas on Monday, October 17, 2005

Well, bought the polks because of the reviews(of course). One set for my pick up, back doors, and two sets for my Expedition, both doors. I placed them in the pick up first and was a bit disappointed. While they sound good for mids and highs(what they are designed for), they are no good for any tid bit of lows which some of the reviews led me to believe. So I decided not to put them in my expedtion. I am still deciding which ones to put in there. While these are decent speakers, just ensure that you know what you are buying them for and what you want them to do for you. They did distort a bit at the middle to top end of my volume control.

All in all do your research and read ALL of the reviews.

Great speakers for use with a subwoofer

Written By Adam, WI on Monday, October 10, 2005

In the past I've used JBL Decade (good bass, rather muddy), Infinity Reference (nice, but a bit shrill), and a few others I can't remember offhand.

These Polks sound far better than anything I've heard in the $80-100 range. The mids and highs are very natural and clear. The tweeters are especially nice--they do not have the harsh, tinny sound common on less expensive speakers.

The reason I didn't give them 5 stars is that they do not have much bass response at all. In fact, they put out significantly less than my stock speakers.

For this reason I wouldn't recommend that they be used alone. However they work wonderfully in conjunction with a subwoofer, and you'd have to spend much more to beat their overall sound quality.

Just what I needed

Written By Kevin, Sringfield, Il on Wednesday, August 31, 2005

I bought a pair of these for my Ranger regular cab. There isn't a lot of room in the cab, but these speakers more than fill it with great sound. I went from stock factory speakers to these, and I love 'em. Great highs, great lows. And the installation instructions were dead on. Took me 30 minutes to get the pair in.

Great speakers for the price

Written By michael, Houston,TX on Thursday, August 25, 2005

I purchased two sets of these for my 2004 Ford Escape. Without a doubt a great deal. Only running them of the power of my Sony CDX-F7700 and injunction with a MTX 6304 4 channel amp running two MTX 8000 12 subs, these speakers sound incredable compared to stock speakers they replaced. For a vast improvment in sound at a cheap price, these speakers can't be beat.

clean and crisp

Written By William, Cartersville, Ga on Wednesday, August 24, 2005

I installed 4 of these in my 05 Explorer. They are the cleanest speakers that I have heard. I use them for mids and mid bass. They do need a lot of power.I am driving these with an Alpine MRV F340 @ 2ohms and 65 watts times 4. My head unit is an Alpine 9833. I'm using an Alpine MRD 301 Sub amp with an Alpine 10" Type R DVC Sub in a sealed enclosure. I'm using a pair of 1" Infinity silk dome tweeters. I can push my HU all the way up to 35 and there is no clipping. Only loud and clear music the way it was meant to sound.
Take the time to set your system up right and you will not be disappoinetd with these speakers. Low powered Amps cause clipping and damage speakers.

Won't Stand Alone for the Bass at Heart

Written By Scott, Atlanta, GA on Wednesday, August 17, 2005

These speakers sound absolutely fantastic. They do lack bass response, but with the help of a subwoofer, these are almost perfect. With the current $30 Crutchfield price tag, there's certainly no way to beat the value.

With the help up the Crutchfield supplied wiring harness and installation information, I installed them in about 15 minutes in my '93 Ford F-150.

Clean and tight

Written By Wylie, Norman, OK on Monday, August 15, 2005

I bought 4 of these for my Mercury Villager with the upgrade sound system and man, do they sound good. The highs are extremely crisp and clear and midrange is full and accurate - a huge improvement over the factory two-way speakers for a very reasonable price. They seem reasonably efficient, also, with good volume given the limited power I have to drive them with.

The only drawback to these speakers is a relatively weak bottom end, but a sub or two should take care of that. I'm having to repair my 6" factory sub since there are no aftermarket replacements, but if that doesn't do it one more powered sub should easily get me there.

If accuracy in your music is more important to you than huge, thumping bass, (or if you plan on using a sub) these speakers are a great deal.

Very Nice Deal

Written By Eleanore, TN on Wednesday, August 10, 2005

I installed these speakers in my Ford F150 and the difference is phenomenal! I moved the fader back and forth between my old speakers and new ones and the highs are crisp, the midrange is nicely detailed and the bass is much clearer and less distorted on these. My one gripe is the bass volume isn't there, it is only slightly better than the old ones. You can really mess up the midrange if you ask too much bass of these speakers. Other than that, you can't do any better at this price range!

Not bad, but not great..

Written By Tim, Peck, MI on Monday, July 25, 2005

I bought these speakers, knowing they wouldnt be awsome, but they'd be better over stock. They are better over stock, but not much. I still can't turn my HU up much louder then 20 Alpine CDA-9847, Ive pushed it to 27 on the HU, it goes to 34 i think, and that was about as far as i wanted to push it, with the bass FLAT, At 0, and it was clipping and didn't look like it could handle the power. Even with the bass blockers, it still wants to clip. My buddys got a all pioneer system, and he cranks it to the max and its clear as a bell. But, For $30 They arn't bad. I'd Prefer some infinity's, but, i'll save up for those. Basically, they are not bad, but there not great. Sound better over stock, but there are much much better speakers out there. Buy them at your own risk, You might like them, you might not, everyone has diffrent tastes when it comes to car audio.

Excellent Deal

Written By Ian, Killeen, Tx on Sunday, July 17, 2005

I just recently purchased 2 sets of these to replace the factory speakers in my wife's Mercury Villager because of the quality I know to come from Polk Audio and the price just couldn't be beat. I am so happy with these that I am including them in a quote I am doing for a friends Ford F-150. I do plan on purchasing an amp as my Kenwood deck just doesn't have the power to feed these properly though. I HIGHLY recommend these to anyone looking for an excellent deal on some 5x7's!!!
