Immersive surround sound effects

The Polk FXi A6 surround speakers combine top-notch home theater performance with flexible placement options. These cleverly designed side- or rear-channel speakers feature two tweeters aimed 45° from each other for an ideal mix of direct and indirect sound.

Dipole/bipole operation for flexible placement

A dipole/bipole switch lets you position the FXi A6s on the rear or side walls of your home theater room — you'll get great results either way. If you place them behind your listening postion, set them to bipole mode for distinct, directional sound. Or set them to dipole mode for side placement, and they'll create a more diffuse soundfield for convincing wraparound effects.

A high-tech approach to accurate sound

Polk carefully designed the drivers using laser testing to help identify and eliminate resonance points. The acoustically inert MDF cabinets fight internal vibrations that can compromise performance. It all adds up to enveloping surround sound that fully immerses you in the movie action.

Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: Each speaker features a 6.5" polymer composite woofer for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeters: Each speaker has dual 1" silk/polymer dome tweeters that provide clear, detailed highs and spacious surround effects. Each tweeter uses a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 45Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 55-26kHz.

Enclosure Design

Enclosure: Each enclosure has a triangular shape with the speaker faces angled at 45 degrees. One face has a tweeter and a woofer, while the other face has a tweeter and port tube opening. A switch for selecting Dipole or Bipole operation is located on the rear of the speaker above the speaker's 5-way binding post speaker terminals. One of the speakers is specifically designed for the "left" channel and the other for the "right" channel.

Acoustically Inert Cabinets: Each speaker cabinet features all-MDF construction with internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance. The speakers are finished in either a black or white laminate finish.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

Port: On the side with only a tweeter, there is a single port tube opening for increased and extended bass response.

Connections
5-Way Binding Posts: The gold-plated 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.
Mounting Options

Dipole/Bipole Switch: There is a switch that allows each speaker to be used as a Dipole (out of phase) or Bipole (in phase) speaker. If you're mounting the speakers on the side walls in line with your listening position, the dipole mode will create a diffuse, ambient soundfield. If you're placing them behind your position, the bipole mode fires the drivers in phase to flood your room with surround sound. When used with a Dolby Digital system, the surround speaker setting should be set to small.

Wall Mounting: The bracket on the back of each speaker has two keyhole slots, allowing the speaker to be mounted on the wall using the supplied 2-1/2" wood screws.

Q
Could these be wall mounted up high for rear surrounds and is there a mount that I could buy?

A
These speakers have mounting plates attached to the back making it super easy to mount them to a wall.
dennis  Feb 17, 2020
A
Yes, you can mount them up on the walls for rear surround speakers, and they mount (at least mine did) by using a properly rated wall anchor. I believe they came with a template for where to drill and the achors only cost a few bucks at your local hardware store.
john  Feb 16, 2020
A
Thats how i use them. The work great as surrounds
chris  Feb 15, 2020
A
Yes
trevor  Feb 15, 2020

There are wall mounts on the back of the speakers. The challenge is if you use high quality RCA jacks, they stick out to far and interfere with the mount. You would have to mount a board on the wall so it povides adequate clearance for these type of jacks.

I'm using them as read surround's and they are phenomenal! They come with wall mount brackets already on them, you would just need to have something to hang them on. Some drywall screws into studs would be perfect.

Q
Can I use them as front high? I cannot run wires to the side of the room or rear. I already have in-wall rc80i for front and rear

A
If high you mean high on the wall in front yes they would work fine the speakers have the option of running in Phase or out of phase they also have great response and range and will compliment your in wall speakers
dennis  Aug 28, 2018
A
This isn't something I can confidently answer as I'm only running a 5.1 system due to my room size. From experience, watching movies in homes with front-hi speakers, they only seem to help in rooms that are really quite large (like small movie theater size). Unless you have upfront seating that is 8 seats or more across, I doubt that it's worth the investment to install these. Also, they are side firing speakers - meant to disperse the sound - so I'm not sure if they are intended to be 'front' speakers as the install guide only shows they for side or rear placement. I have sound-matched Polks for my entire speaker array, and having matching speakers is the only way to go in my opinion. But, again, unless you have a fairly large room, I'm not sure if adding these are worth it.
john  Aug 28, 2018
A
These will work fine as front highs. Great sounding speakers. Recommend.
richard  Aug 28, 2018
A
Not sure. I don't see why not. I have mine as my rear speakers.

Q
Will these work well as side speakers in a 7.1 surround sound system?

A
It is very awesome sound, also compare with high end rank speaker. This is enought for me to feel it.

Hello Jeremy, I haven't hooked them up as my wife doesn't want speakers behind the couch. I do definitely think they would work just fine in a 7.1 system though.
tom  Aug 12, 2018
A
Yes
gene  Aug 12, 2018

I personally have these setup in the back of my living room and I'm very happy with their performance. If my living room was larger I would most definitely be buying an additional pair as my side speakers.
marc  Aug 12, 2018
A
Yes, worked well in my rectangular room.
rolan  Aug 12, 2018
A
Thats what I bought them for
chris  Aug 12, 2018
A
Yes, they work great as a side speaker as long as your wife doesn't mind them sticking out from the wall. They sound great!
jeffrey  Aug 12, 2018
A
Yes. They are a little tall depending on your space. Due to size they do have a slightly "richer" sound than the 4's. That said I ended with the 4's side and rear due to size. If I had space I'd have the 6's all around. I'm assuming you have fronts and center good enough to match/better them. If not I'd go 4's.

Q
Are these speakers powerful enough for 30'×20' room?
audrey  Dec 08, 2017
3 answers
A
These speakers are definitely powerful enough for a room that size. However, the are better suited as the rear speakers in a surround system design, as in the back pair accompanied by tower speakers or something similar providing the front end balance. I have them backing up a pair of Polk tower speakers and a Polk center channel.
jamison  Dec 11, 2017
A
To answer bluntly, yes. The long answer is...Thats about the same volume room I have mine in. The room is 18x34, 8' ceiling, open down 1 18' side. They are mounted 6' off the floor to the bottom.I have an Onkyo txnr777 receiver (220w/channel) and no amp, with Polk s55's up front and an HSU sub. Listening position is between them with the couch against the same wall they are mounted on. I used the accu setup on the AVR which (surprisingly) set everything flat, but did shorten the distance from 8' actual to 7.2'. After listening for a bit, I increased the output by 2db and think it sounds great. They are crossed at 80hz. I like to hear the rear speakers and not just let them provide ambient sound. On bipole setting they are very well balanced with music in 5.1and provide easily localizable soind while maintaining the ambient. I am not at all disappointed with their performance or quality and would buy them again. Think you will be happy with them also, depending on the quality and power of your front speakers. Be aware, they are fairly large, about 16" tall x 14" wide x 12" off the wall, but look good and are surprisingly unobtrusive in a large room.
james  Dec 08, 2017
A
That sounds like a fairly large room. I think it depends on what speakers you plan to use up front, where you are going to place these, etc. My feeling is you'd probably be happier with something a little bigger - my room is about 15x15 and they are placed to the sides which works great.

Q
Is there a pair of wireless rear speakers that are compatible with the Polk Signa S1 sound bar and subwoofer?
cobber  Oct 28, 2017
2 answers
A
Unfortunateky the S1 does not have any provision for rear speakers. Dolby is decoded into 3.1 channels (left, right, center. Sub) with some speaker tricks making virtual surround. There is no broadcast method or decoding method for the rear channels. If you haven't bought this yet and want a 5.1 soundbar then I would suggest Samsung, Sonos or Vizio. All of their upper end soundbars are wireless rear compatible.
james  Oct 31, 2017
A
My FXi A6 speakets are excellent dipole rear surround speakers that truly hold there own with the rest of my high powered lineup, but they are not wireless to my knowledge. I had to bury the wires before I drywalled. The only polk component i own that is wireless is my DSW PRO 660 subwoofer, but have it wired with high end sub cable.

Q
Do you have any recommendation on speaker stands for these?
thomas  Nov 23, 2016
2 answers
A
Cannot recommend a brand but just about any should work that set the speaker at just over ear height when listening. If I were to stand mount I would make sure it had some kind of back on it as well as a shelf that worked with the triangular footprint.
james  Dec 08, 2017
A
I do not have any recommendations on stands for these speakers, I actually have them mounted on my wall as rear speakers. I did this because of the layout that I have in my basement, because they play sound in two different directions it's perfect as the rear on my surround sound 9.2 and they also act as speakers for my bar which is located behind the surround
