Don't call them computer speakers. The Polk Audio Hampden powered speakers deliver a near-field listening experience that will leave you amazed at the breadth and detail of the sound. When you plug the Hampden's USB connector into your computer, magic happens. The connection lets the Hampden bypass your computer's marginal digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and process the digital information through its own built-in high-performance DAC. And that means your music will sound more fully detailed and life like.
The Hampden speakers are angled to create an optimal listening environment when you're sitting at your computer.
Polk has carefully crafted the Hampden speakers to deliver superior sound. The teak-veneered MDF enclosures virtually eliminate unwanted vibrations. The speakers sit angled to position the sound field properly when you're seated at your desk. The speaker cable uses 4-pin Euro-style connectors to ensure tight, secure connections for minimal signal loss.
Midrange and bass frequencies are handled by a pair of 4-1/2" composite polypropylene cone woofers, while a pair of 1" silk/polymer soft-dome tweeters produce smooth highs. Each driver is powered by its own dedicated amplifier channel: the system uses 30 watts x 2 for the mids and 10 watts x 2 for the tweeters. Sound is clean, detailed, and impactful.
Want to enjoy music from your smartphone or tablet? Just pair your device to the Hampden and stream wirelessly via Bluetooth. The system features aptX® audio coding, an advanced form of Bluetooth that allows higher-fidelity sound with compatible devices. Hampden is backwards-compatible with earlier forms of Bluetooth, too.
The Hampden speakers are ready to rock your party. When you and your friends download the free Polk Audio DJ Stream app from Apple iTunes® or Google Play, the fun can start. As host, you can authorize three other friends to stream music to the Hampden. The app builds a playlist, taking each tune in sequence.
Everyone with the app will see the playlist of upcoming tracks and get to vote “Thumbs Up” or “Thumbs Down.” You can change DJ assignments around, so everyone has a chance to share their favorite songs. And when the party's over, the vote tally will show you which DJ had the hottest tracks.
From the review "The look and sound of retro-cool"
" The overall sound had a quality that I found instantly appealing — perhaps because I had already received visual cues from the Hampden's appearance. Music sounded full-bodied, with plenty of detail and clarity. And yet, there seemed to be a little softness around the edges — almost as if I was listening to an analog sound source. Bass notes hit with appropriate impact — the integrated speaker stands angle the speakers in a way that allow the down-firing bass ports to operate effectively. Low tones hit the table top and bounce outward in the direction the speakers are pointed. The definition was there, without the harshness I usually associate with digital sources."

Really like these speakers. I needed a pair of bluetooth speakers in my piano studio, and these came highly recommended by the Crutchfield advisors. I use them primarily for classical music, and they are wonderful. Really clear sound in all registers, the bluetooth feature works easily from my MacBook and my iPhone--a bonus for my limited technological skiils. The bluetooth sounds almost as good as when I've connected my laptop with the included USB cable--very impressive. Love being able to expose my students to good recordings with speakers that allow all the nuances and subtleties to be heard--and it's so much more convenient and quicker to play my recordings this way than to go through my roughly 1000 CDs to find an exact recording. They look great, too. And the sound keeps getting better as I use them.
Pros: Good sound. Easy set to set up. Look good.
Cons: Haven't found any yet.
I've actually been using these speakers for the past three months in my office. The sound is impressively clear, crisp and deep.especially given their compact size which is great for on the desk. One of the best features is the Bluetooth capability which allows you to sync seamlessly just by walking in the room/office. I don't have to fuss with hooking up my audio out cables to my PC every time I walk back into my office. It also allows me to stream music from my phone over BT which is super convenient. Add to this the cool retro look and feel of the speakers and you have a great product with exceptional value. Can't go wrong.
Pros: great sound, retro look, bluetooth capability
Outstanding sound. Could easily be the stereo system for a small room. Absolutely no drop outs. I have never had Polk speakers before. Makes me want to try their conventional speakers. Two speakers make a huge difference.
Pros: Easily paired with my I Pod. Looks good and sounds fantastic. One of the few 2 speaker systems for blue tooth.
When I received these speakers, I was surprised at their size. They are fairly big and to get the best bass response, must be precisely located. Too close to the back wall, if you have one, and the bass is boomy. That said, they take up a fair amount of real estate. Once properly set up though (please experiment with placement), the sound is awesome! Very tight bass and transparent highs. Connection is a snap. Just plug them in and you're all set. Some applications like Skype need to be re-configured for USB or you'll have no sound. Controls for volume and input are on the side of the right speaker and easy to use. I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the Energy Star "Sleep" mode. To wake them up, a source has to feed them or you must move the volume control a little. It takes a few seconds for them to "wake up". How much power can these little things draw to require Energy Star compliance? Would I recommend them? You bet!
Pros: Great sound, powerful, good looking and well constructed.
Cons: Energy Star and large size might be a turn off for some.
These speakers exceeded expectations across the board. First, they couldnt be easier to set-up...you are lierally listening to music in under 5 minutes...with the easy set-up of blue-tooth to your phone, Ipad, etc, it couldn't be easier. They also look really cool, and many people who have seen them comment on their appearance...kind of "retro" and "hip." And finally - And most importantly - They sound tremendous! These speakers handle the full spectrum of sound - from the highest highs to the lowest lows - beautifully. They have a bottom spectrum that you wouldn't expect from speakers of this size. In fact, these speakers sound as good as my expensive stereo speakers connected to my home audio system.
Pros: Easy set-up; easy blue-tooth connection; sound awesome, especially the lows for a speaker of this size
Cons: none that I can think of
In need of new speakers for my PC, I investigated several options, including those with subwoofers. I settled on the Polk Hampden Desktop for multiple reasons.
The most important aspect of any speaker is of course their sound quality. When compared to similarly priced systems with a subwoofer, the Hampdens were by far the better choice. These desktop speakers provide dynamic, deep, and clear sound without a subwoofer or any other modifications. They fill my entire two-story house with music without diminishing quality. They are also wonderful for movies or gaming.
In addition to sound, the speakers are versatile. Not only can they connect to your PC or gaming system, but also are Bluetooth compatible. Another neat facet is the easy to use Polk App, an option through which you can create music playlists without the hassle, randomness, or complications of Pandora, Spotify, or iTunes.
Finally, they have a cool post-modern /retro aesthetic. Their vintage look great fits well with 21st century or more traditional decor.
All in all, if you're in the market for a versatile set of desktop speakers that look smart, I would recommend these excellent speakers.
Excellent speaker, well designed, well made, above average sound.
Pros: Much thought was given to the nature of use. Ability to couple to audio sources via Blue Tooth, mini stereo plug, USB. Physical design provides an integral stand rather than sitting flat on a surface. Set up is easy.
Cons: Two issues. First, USB cable without any visible damage was too tight to fit ANY USB port on two PC's. Need to spread the connector. Second, to attain reasonable listening level, truly NOT loud, volume needs to be set at "7" or "8" of possible "10".
Remember the days when computer speakers were those crappy, beige-colored pieces of plastic that sounded like a mix between a cup-and-string kid's phone and a person singing underwater? Boy, have we come a long way since!
I have known and loved Polk products for quite some time, but when I bought a pair of these puppies a couple of weeks ago I was expecting very good quality speakers for a great price, not THE BEST DESKTOP speakers I have ever heard. Yes, admittedly a bold statement. But one I don't hesitate in making after spending some time listening to these and being blown-away by how rich, warm, deep (as in crazy-good, distortion-free lows) and clean everything sounds through these. I have never heard any system that offer this much bass without a paired sub-woofer.
I ditched a pair of Bowers & Wilkins MM-1s ($100 more expensive) for these and I am never looking back. Don't get me wrong, the MM-1s are solid desktop speakers and I love the little included remote control, but they don't come even close to the Hampdens when it comes to sound quality. It's almost like. the MM-1s are great, for computer speakers. The Polk Hampdens are crossing the line beyond computer speakers and into Studio Monitor territory. Yes. They are THAT good.
I love the cool cream/wood look. It's vintage and modern at the same time. I also love the fact that it has built-in bluetooth with Apt-X.
To sum it all up: Believe the hype (and the 5 star rating). These speakers are amazing!
My 2 cents.
I've been a fan of Polk Audio speakers for over 30 years and these little gems continue to show why! Top quality, easy to use, superior sound! As usual, Performance exceeds my expectations. I've always expected the best from Polk Audio and they continue to deliver! These are exceptionally pleasing aesthetically while functionally being absolutely superior.
Pros: Love everything about these!
Cons: None found so far.
These speakers look and sound great. They sound like they produce great sound as if they were a floor-standing loudspeaker with its own amp. The Bluetooth connectivity is great although Bluetooth range is somewhat limited based on the technology not any fault to Polk. These speakers are easily portable and I have moved them around my office and in many rooms in my house, they also require minimal setup. Great product Polk!
Pros: Easy setup, great sound, great looks
Cons: A little bigger than expected when taking them out of the box, not really a con just a comment
Incredible sound from Bluetooth speakers. Best sounding speakers I have heard since getting a new stereo back in college 25 years ago. Those speakers back then were 3' tall and these small speakers produce better, bigger sound than those old huge speakers.
Pros: Blue tooth capable, easy volume control, easy to use out of the box, not bulky, perfect size for table top or patio table use.
These speakers rock! I set these up on my desk at work, and literally everyone was talking about them! They were not only really aesthetically pleasing but the music sounded awesome coming from them. I love the vintage speaker look and feel. The setup was a breeze on my MAC and I'm a very happy customer
Pros: very good to look at
Cons: a bit heavy for the size of speakers
Super simple and easy to use out of the box. The sound quality is spot on and beats other blue tooth options we've used in the office.
Pros: Simple and easy to use
I received these speakers as a gift, and am amazed at the improvement over my previous set of aging but relatively high-end desktop speakers. Right out of the box the build quality is impressive, from the wood finish exterior, subtle rubber grips, and sheer heft. I'm not normally a fan of "natural" finishes, tending to gravitate towards black or aluminum, but these are very attractively done, and add a bit of class to my desk. Even the cables are a pleasant surprise, with removable ends for customizing the length.
Set up was easy. However, be sure to remove all of the plastic film on the outside of the speakers. I left some on the bottom, which covered the bass-ports, and they sounded terrible until it was removed. However, once fully unwrapped, these speakers are amazing. I threw a bunch of tracks at them, and my computer has never sounded better.
The bluetooth feature was an unexpected treat. I was able to pair my iPhone and the speakers automatically switched to what my phone was playing. A large button on the side of the speakers switches from the three available inputs (line-in, USB, and bluetooth), and along with the large knob above for power and volume, are the only controls. The natural finish and price might not make these for everyone, but if you're looking for a great set of desktop speakers, these are an excellent choice.
Pros: Easy Setup Build Quality Sound Quality
Cons: None yet
I bought these speakers for my girlfriend and I's apartment and we are obsessed. They get super loud and the Bluetooth functionality is awesome because we use them to stream music from my phone or nearby computer. Surprisingly they are really easy to set up and took less than 4 mins to plug in. Didn't even have to reference the instruction book and that's a first. The vintage design is very refreshing for a desktop speaker and they are made very well. You know a speaker is high quality when they use real wood and the front is very sleek. The final perk of these speakers over others is Polk's DJ Stream App. Its pretty cool and when we have people over we all create a playlist to fight over who djs the best music. Hands down a great listening experience.
Pros: Great sound, sleek design, Bluetooth functionality, many connectivity options, easy to use
We recently got the Polk Hampden bookshelf speakers and are completely blown away! Hands down the best pair of speakers I've ever had in terms of both sound quality and aesthetic. They have a retro mid-century look with a white exposed face and wood detail. So far we've kept them around a "5" on the volume dial because the sound quality is THAT good-- crystal clear at any volume. Great for music, movies, or anything really. They are larger than your average speaker, so they look awesome on display.
The bluetooth capability makes it super easy to stream music straight from your pocket while people are over and taking requests is a sinch. The Polk app lets your friends create playlists on the fly and makes party playlists an group activity.
If you're an audiophile like myself but also want something more decor-minded, there isn't a better speaker on the market.
Pros: design, mid-century modern look, SOUND
These speakers offer great sound quality and really impress. The Bluetooth function is by far the most impressive feature of the speakers and they are extremely versatile being able to be used with the computer, tv, or phone.
Pros: Bluetooth feature, great sound quality
Love, Love, LOVE these speakers! We received these speakers as a wedding gift and they are awesome! Whether plugging in or using bluetooth, these connected right and away and setup was a breeze! These babies have a great, crisp sound and are stylish to boot! Highly recommended!
Pros: Easy to use, stylish, FANTASTIC sound!!
Cons: None so far!
To be honest, I never considered myself a "splurger" when it came to music or speakers. I considered buying an album on iTunes enough of a splurge. But I decided to take the plunge and try out the Hampden speakers because I had heard a lot of buzz about them and liked the design. As soon as I opened the box, I was impressed by Hampden's weight; they just seemed stable. And don't get me started on the wood-work - it fit the boho, eclectic style of my studio so perfectly; I could feel myself falling in love. I put on "Sideways" by Citizen Cope featuring Santana to put these bad boys to the test and simply put - oh my goodness, I had fallen. They filled the room with sound in such a subtle and effortless way without forcing the sound on you like most speakers do. And even when at 'max volume' they didn't sound like they were hurting or even hustling to push the acoustics and bass out. Suffice it today, it's love, and these speakers aren't going anywhere.
Pros: The design is unique and beautiful and the speakers sound great at all volumes
Wow! I was more than pleasantly surprised by the Hampden speakers which are being sold as desktop speakers. They are so much more than that. They may be the only speakers you need. First of all, the sound quality is incredible with a full range of deep base thru crisp highs. They are super simple to set up, whether you are plugging them into your computer via a USB or whether you are using the blue tooth. The blue tooth functionality is simple and intuitive to use even for me - I'm not very technology oriented. The best thing of all is the versatility. Since they work with your iphone or ipad via blue tooth, you can really use these anywhere - not just with your computer. We've already set them up in our kitchen so we can cook (and dance) to our favorite play lists. I highly recommend these speakers but don't think for a second that you're getting a pair of desktop speakers. These are really much more than that.
Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy to set up. Easy to connect using blue tooth. Very versatile. Cool looking - not another black speaker
Cons: I don't have anything bad to say about these speakers. They are so much more than I expected and the sound is really incredible. The only potential drawback is the appearance which may not be for everyone. Personally, I love the way they look - but some people may have different tastes.
My new Polk Hampden speakers have converted me completely! I am now officially spoiled when it comes to having an amazing audio experience. Whether it's from Pandora on my iPhone or Netflix on the iPad, the bluetooth speakers are amazing. Adding to the experience with first-class, clear and precise sound......it's the way it should be!
Pros: Clean, clear, sharp
Cons: They are SO good, you will have to adjust your levels on your computer (but is that REALLY a "con"??!!)
If you're looking for desktop quality speakers that rival studio monitor quality, these do it. Ok, forget the fact for one second that these are some of the best looking speakers I've seen, just on sound quality alone, these speakers produce low end like I've never experienced from a desktop speaker. Then add in the functionality of the Bluetooth capabilities and you're just in another class altogether. Just really impressed by these "desktop" speakers at this price point.... still feels weird calling them that... hah!
Pros: - Top Notch Sound quality - USB input for bypassing computer soundcard - Bluetooth connectivity for easy use with smartphones and tablets - They look elegant and modern - Sound - sorry, still stunned at the low end.... it's like I'm hearing some of these songs for the first time...lol
Cons: If you use the higher quality USB input, you have to control the audio volume with the speaker's volume knob - I know it's picky but c'mon, I gotta come up with something...
These speakers have been a fantastic upgrade for us from our previous device docking station. The Bluetooth connectivity has made a world of difference in our house, and the sound quality is perfection at any volume. On top of that, the speakers just look downright cool; love the retro look in our home! A total must-have!
A classic look with an outstanding sound. These computer speakers are the perfect combination. I appreciate that Polk took the time to design something that has such a timeless feel to it. It fits right into my decor with its minimalist look. Now onto the sound ... It is amazing! It is crisp and clear and it feels my medium size office space perfectly. Kudos to Polk, they nailed it!
I waited some time for these desktop speakers to be released. I have several other Polk Audio products (car speakers and headphones), so it's safe to say I have a special type of loyalty to the amazing company. Once I unboxed the Hampden Speakers and connected them (with ease) to my office, I knew that they were totally worth the wait. The look and sound are truly incredible.
Pros: Old school look with modern technology.
I was looking for the right speaker for my home office and could not be any happier with this pair. They sound as good as they look. I was challenged to find a speaker that would match my office environment and still deliver the great sound quality for all activities. I use these for music, videos and conference calls. Love them.
Pros: Sound quality is spot on for all types of music, videos and general audio use. Very nice for office or home setting
We have a home theater room that was acoustically balanced and outfitted with a professionally designed seven-channel system that conforms to THX specs. As a result, our family has become spoiled when it comes to sound systems. We've tried a number of high-end systems for the rest of our home yet never found one that could bring that same high-end experience in a bookshelf / desktop design package...until I set up our new Polk Hampdens. Two words: UNBELIEVABLE SOUND. These retro-elegant, plug & play speakers produce a crystal-clear, silky-smooth full range sound. From the rich booming bass to bell-like high tones, these speakers make you feel like you are right there in the movie or with the band. A cool feature is the variety of ways to easily connect with devices to maximize the sound response in order to appreciate the full capability of the speakers. On a final note, my wife patched in with her iPhone's Bluetooth, flicked on her music and fell in love with them, immediately. Now, she wants to move my new Hampdens from the home office to our living room and replace the existing home system. At only $400 a pair, I wish these Polk speakers had been around a few years ago!
Pros: The Sound Quality - Silk- Smooth Crystal-Clear through full range. Powerful deep bass. Setup / interface options including Bluetooth
Okay, these things are expensive. I'm sure polk would prefer to call them "valuable." I wasn't really prepared to spend this much on a pair of computer speakers, but I've invested in polk gear in the past, and never had buyers remorse, so I thought I'd try it again with these.
Tech features are great. BT means they could be an awesome jam box alternative for the kitchen or bedroom. BT connection is the easiest I've ever experienced. The built-in DAC is awesome and puts these in audiophile category. Crystal clear with no apparent noise-floor. Definitely an unexpected and brag-worthy feature.
The style and build quality is amazing. Solid with cool details you'll appreciate. The front-style illumination reminds me of a 60's era hi-fi.
The sound is BIG, warm, with surprising bass--no need for a sub. The soundstage is awesome--they're obviously well tuned for desktop use. It sounds like I'm in a bubble of awesome, full-range sound. But crank them to 8 and you'll easily fill a medium sized room.
Go polk! Highly recommended!
Pros: Look great. More furniture than gear. Incredible build quality. Incredible. No need for a sub. Internal DAC for audiophile grade sound. Brag to your friends. Bluetooth! Super easy connection with no special mode or code to enter. There's an app. But I didn't try it.
Cons: Conspicuous in size and style. Retro style is at odds with my black-and-aluminum Mac. Easily to accidentally switch source when adjusting volume. Permanent upward tilt affects their usefulness as bookshelf speakers.
My big issue with desktop speakers is most of them lack any real punch - not the case here! Great detail in the lows and mids and airy, clear highs. Couldn't be happier!
Pros: Solid, punchy bass for a desktop speaker, clear mids and highs, and easy to set-up. Beautiful, detailed 'old school' yet modern design.
Cons: None so far.
I just set it up in my office windows 7 PC and my windows phone. Wow overall, very easy! I plugged in the power, USB and everything quickly worked. I enabled my bluetooth on my phone and it instantly connected. I have had other crummy speakers that came with the computer but the Polk Audio sound is amazing clear and has some serious bass too! My co-workers stopped in my office and also comment on the sound and also how well they liked their other home Polk Audio products. I have never had blue tooth speakers before and was concerned about the quality- boy I was wrong! I would highly recommend this product!
Pros: Easy to use; easy setup;easy to switch between devices (phones, pc,) awesome sound!
Cons: haven't found one yet
Beautiful design, amazing sound. I'm so happy I chose these speakers over the others. Polk Audio hit the bullseye with these.
Pros: Beautiful look and feel, tilted angle truly makes a difference, easy to connect to bluetooth. Look awesome on my desk.
Cons: I only own pair.
These speakers look retro cool but sound future outstanding. I've owned a couple of other computer speakers and kept returning them because they were just missing that clear, full spectrum, solid bass and crisp highs that I enjoy listening to. These speakers hit the mark. The only others that came close were the B&W MM-1's. The Hampden's are definitely better sounding than the B&W's to me. Sound is really amazing for a 2.0 speaker set up. Love them!!! Finally no more searching and purchasing and returning speakers. These are keepers.
Pros: Sound, Sound, Sound, Design also bluetooth streaming is a nice plus.
Cons: If I had to be really picky and find a con it would be that when connected to your computer through USB connection you cannot control the volume from your keyboard volume buttons. You need to control the volume only from the speaker dial itself. Not a biggie. However if you connect through bluetooth you can control the volume with your keyboard controls. But, I believe connecting through USB gives you better sound quality. So I stick with connected through USB.
Polk gets it right with these retro cool looking speakers that sound so good!
Powered Computer Speakers: The Polk Hampden is a pair of powered computer speakers designed for near-field desktop listening. The Hampden offers USB connectivity to your computer, built-in Bluetooth for your smartphone or tablet, and an aux input for a variety of analog devices. These powered speakers features a two-way driver design with 80-watts of amplification for great sound.
Bass-Reflex Two-Way System: Each powered loudspeaker uses a 1" soft-dome silk/polymer tweeter and a robust 4.5" mid-woofer with a stiff, lightweight composite polypropylene cone. The tweeter and woofer are housed in a bass-reflex teak veneer enclosure with a downward-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. This combination of drivers and enclosure creates a rich, warm sound.
Bi-Amplification: Each driver and tweeter is driven by its own dedicated amplifier for greater dynamic range and clarity. Individually amplifying the drivers and tweeters adds an effortless character to the Hampden's performance that translates into a greater sense of realism. And by eliminating passive crossover components, Polk reduces the distortion, phase shift, and other undesirable by-products inherent in such systems. The amplifiers in each speaker deliver 10-watts to the tweeter and 30-watts to the mid-bass driver.
Digital Signal Processing: The Hampden's powerful Digital Signal Processor (DSP) smoothes frequency response and creates greater bass extension. Your music and movies will simply feel more alive.
Angled MDF Enclosure: Most desktop loudspeakers aim their sound directly at the listener's chest, putting you in an off-axis position and compromising tonal balance. The Hampden's "laid back" angle aide directivity, sending all the sound to your ears. The crafted teak veneer and MDF enclosures look great on a desktop or in an entertainment console.
USB DAC: The Polk Hampden's USB (type-B) input bypasses the lower quality digital-to-analog converter built into most computers. A higher quality DAC in the Polk Hampden optimizes this critical function for the best audio possible. The built-in DAC supports a wide variety of audio file formats.
Built-in Bluetooth: The Polk Hampden features built-in Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) with aptX technology. The unit's built-in Bluetooth lets you stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, or computer/laptop to the Hampden powered speakers. Thanks to aptX technology your wireless music will sound "CD-like" (when streaming from an aptX-equipped Bluetooth device, like Android OS 4.0+). Music navigation and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Polk Audio Hapmden.
DJ Stream App w/ Party Mode: Download the free DJ Stream app onto your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (4.0+) device from iTunes or GooglePlay for Party Mode. Now, up to 4 friends (1 host/3 guests) can create their own playlist from the music stored on his or her device and play their music through the Hampden powered speaker system. Only one playlist can be active at a time, The "Host" has the ability to select which playlist is active and control the music from his or her device (the playback controls on the Hampden are deactivated during Party Mode). Up to 128 friends can be connected via the app to vote on songs from the 4 connected playlists.
Note: Your Apple iOS or Android device will need to be connected to your home's wireless network or carrier's cellular signal.
Aux Input: The 3.5mm auxiliary input lets you connect and play music from a variety on non-Bluetooth and computer audio sources, such as a portable CD player or MP3 player.
