About the Polk Audio Hampden
Don't call them computer speakers. The Polk Audio Hampden powered speakers deliver a near-field listening experience that will leave you amazed at the breadth and detail of the sound. When you plug the Hampden's USB connector into your computer, magic happens. The connection lets the Hampden bypass your computer's marginal digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and process the digital information through its own built-in high-performance DAC. And that means your music will sound more fully detailed and life like.
The Hampden speakers are angled to create an optimal listening environment when you're sitting at your computer.
High-performance sound
Polk has carefully crafted the Hampden speakers to deliver superior sound. The teak-veneered MDF enclosures virtually eliminate unwanted vibrations. The speakers sit angled to position the sound field properly when you're seated at your desk. The speaker cable uses 4-pin Euro-style connectors to ensure tight, secure connections for minimal signal loss.
Four drivers, four amps
Midrange and bass frequencies are handled by a pair of 4-1/2" composite polypropylene cone woofers, while a pair of 1" silk/polymer soft-dome tweeters produce smooth highs. Each driver is powered by its own dedicated amplifier channel: the system uses 30 watts x 2 for the mids and 10 watts x 2 for the tweeters. Sound is clean, detailed, and impactful.
High quality Bluetooth audio
Want to enjoy music from your smartphone or tablet? Just pair your device to the Hampden and stream wirelessly via Bluetooth. The system features aptX® audio coding, an advanced form of Bluetooth that allows higher-fidelity sound with compatible devices. Hampden is backwards-compatible with earlier forms of Bluetooth, too.
One system for four DJs
The Hampden speakers are ready to rock your party. When you and your friends download the free Polk Audio DJ Stream app from Apple iTunes® or Google Play, the fun can start. As host, you can authorize three other friends to stream music to the Hampden. The app builds a playlist, taking each tune in sequence.
Everyone with the app will see the playlist of upcoming tracks and get to vote “Thumbs Up” or “Thumbs Down.” You can change DJ assignments around, so everyone has a chance to share their favorite songs. And when the party's over, the vote tally will show you which DJ had the hottest tracks.
From the review "The look and sound of retro-cool"
" The overall sound had a quality that I found instantly appealing — perhaps because I had already received visual cues from the Hampden's appearance. Music sounded full-bodied, with plenty of detail and clarity. And yet, there seemed to be a little softness around the edges — almost as if I was listening to an analog sound source. Bass notes hit with appropriate impact — the integrated speaker stands angle the speakers in a way that allow the down-firing bass ports to operate effectively. Low tones hit the table top and bounce outward in the direction the speakers are pointed. The definition was there, without the harshness I usually associate with digital sources."

Features
Powered Computer Speakers: The Polk Hampden is a pair of powered computer speakers designed for near-field desktop listening. The Hampden offers USB connectivity to your computer, built-in Bluetooth for your smartphone or tablet, and an aux input for a variety of analog devices. These powered speakers features a two-way driver design with 80-watts of amplification for great sound.
Bass-Reflex Two-Way System: Each powered loudspeaker uses a 1" soft-dome silk/polymer tweeter and a robust 4.5" mid-woofer with a stiff, lightweight composite polypropylene cone. The tweeter and woofer are housed in a bass-reflex teak veneer enclosure with a downward-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. This combination of drivers and enclosure creates a rich, warm sound.
Bi-Amplification: Each driver and tweeter is driven by its own dedicated amplifier for greater dynamic range and clarity. Individually amplifying the drivers and tweeters adds an effortless character to the Hampden's performance that translates into a greater sense of realism. And by eliminating passive crossover components, Polk reduces the distortion, phase shift, and other undesirable by-products inherent in such systems. The amplifiers in each speaker deliver 10-watts to the tweeter and 30-watts to the mid-bass driver.
Digital Signal Processing: The Hampden's powerful Digital Signal Processor (DSP) smoothes frequency response and creates greater bass extension. Your music and movies will simply feel more alive.
Angled MDF Enclosure: Most desktop loudspeakers aim their sound directly at the listener's chest, putting you in an off-axis position and compromising tonal balance. The Hampden's "laid back" angle aide directivity, sending all the sound to your ears. The crafted teak veneer and MDF enclosures look great on a desktop or in an entertainment console.
USB DAC: The Polk Hampden's USB (type-B) input bypasses the lower quality digital-to-analog converter built into most computers. A higher quality DAC in the Polk Hampden optimizes this critical function for the best audio possible. The built-in DAC supports a wide variety of audio file formats.
Built-in Bluetooth: The Polk Hampden features built-in Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) with aptX technology. The unit's built-in Bluetooth lets you stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, or computer/laptop to the Hampden powered speakers. Thanks to aptX technology your wireless music will sound "CD-like" (when streaming from an aptX-equipped Bluetooth device, like Android OS 4.0+). Music navigation and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile device.
DJ Stream App w/ Party Mode: Download the free DJ Stream app onto your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (4.0+) device from iTunes or GooglePlay for Party Mode. Now, up to 4 friends (1 host/3 guests) can create their own playlist from the music stored on his or her device and play their music through the Hampden powered speaker system. Only one playlist can be active at a time, The "Host" has the ability to select which playlist is active and control the music from his or her device (the playback controls on the Hampden are deactivated during Party Mode). Up to 128 friends can be connected via the app to vote on songs from the 4 connected playlists.
Aux Input: The 3.5mm auxiliary input lets you connect and play music from a variety on non-Bluetooth and computer audio sources, such as a portable CD player or MP3 player.

Incredible sound from Bluetooth speakers. Best sounding speakers I have heard since getting a new stereo back in college 25 years ago. Those speakers back then were 3' tall and these small speakers produce better, bigger sound than those old huge speakers.
