About the Polk Audio LC60i

Tom Mathew
In-ceiling speakers have never sounded like this. The LC60i takes advantage of the same advanced technologies that made Polk's critically acclaimed LSi loudspeakers so incredibly successful. And since these speakers install directly into your ceiling, you can get clean, high-impact sound without taking up an inch of floor space.

The LC60i features a 1" Ring Radiator tweeter (the same tweeter found on ultra-high-end speakers costing $10,000 a pair) and a 6-1/2" Dynamic Balance® woofer. The specially designed tweeter delivers smooth, extended highs with amazing detail. Plus, it's swivel-mounted, so you can direct the high frequencies toward your favorite listening position. The woofer and tweeter are offset by 15º for improved midrange clarity and imaging.

Polk has outfitted the LC60i with helpful sound-shaping controls. Use the tweeter level switch to tailor the high-frequencies to suit your personal taste and room's acoustics. The wall distance toggle switch flattens the bass response — ideal for avoiding a boomy bass sound if your speaker is installed near a corner. And the off-axis targeting switch improves stereo imaging throughout the room. That's a lot versatility for an in-ceiling speaker.

Careful design and sturdy build are a must for high-quality in-ceiling sound. Polk's Casket Basket® construction keeps the speaker's drivers in rigid alignment, and the dense, acoustically inert baffle virtually eliminates annoying resonance. The LC60i is rust- and moisture-resistant for safe use in bathrooms, kitchens, saunas, and even under outdoor eaves. Installation is easy thanks to the LC60i's rotary cam design. (For new-construction installation, we recommend Polk's Performance Enclosure, sold separately, for the best possible in-ceiling sound.)

You can put together an invisible home theater speaker system using the LCi in-ceiling and in-wall speakers with a powered sub. Plus, since the LCis are voice-matched to Polk's LSi loudspeakers, you can mix and match in-ceiling, in-wall, and free-standing speakers to suit your listening space.

Dynamic Balance Technology: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofers: Each speaker features a 6-1/2" Dynamic Balance, aerated polypropylene woofer for deep, accurate bass. For a smoother response and improved durability, each woofer uses a rubber surround.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 1" Ring Radiator tweeter for crisp, transparent highs. The ultra-light woven Ring Radiator Diaphragm delivers flat response, precise detail and overall accuracy. A High Frequency Waveguide prevents phase cancellations for smooth, uniform frequency response and wide dispersion. A Low Frequency Waveguide promotes laminar airflow between chambers to prevent air turbulence. This feature serves the same function as Power Port for Polk's bass systems. The ball-and-socket swivel mount lets you aim the tweeter in any direction to give you direct high-frequency control, resulting in excellent imaging even for off-axis listening positions.

Terminals: Each speaker features gold-plated spring post terminals.

Accessible Controls: The LC60i features technology that can tailor the sound for performance in difficult or unusual placement situations. The following controls are located on the front panel of each speaker (behind the grille):

  • Wall Distance Toggle: In-wall speakers excel when placed more than 2' from side walls. When the speaker is mounted closer than 2', the result is a "bump" in response between 50 and 200 Hz. Each speaker has a Distance Toggle Switch circuit that flattens the response and tunes out the "boominess" if mounted closer than 2' from a side wall.
  • Tweeter Attenuator: If the listening room is very reflective, with smooth sheetrock walls, hardwood floors, and non-cushioned furniture, the sound will overly "bright" and unnatural. In this case, you can engage the LCi -3 dB Tweeter Attenuator (select the "Cut" setting) to flatten the room response without hindering higher frequency response for warmer, more realistic sound and more accurate imaging.
  • Area Targeting: Engaging this function expands the area of high frequency response, improving off-axis imaging.

Infinite Baffle Tuning: Infinite Baffle Tuning uses the virtual enclosure of in-wall space for superior bass response.

Moisture-resistant: Durable, moisture-resistant materials allow you to install each speaker in a bathroom, kitchen, sauna, even under outdoor eaves.

Timbre-matched: The speakers are timbre-matched to the Polk Audio LSi Series for seamless, enveloping imaging when used in a home theater system. You can mix and match any of the LCi-series in-wall and in-ceiling speakers with the LSi Series high performance floor-standing and bookshelf speakers.

Paintable: The grilles and flanges can be painted, allowing the speakers to match any d?cor. Clear plastic paint masks are included to protect the "unpaintable" speaker parts.

Installation: Each speaker requires an 8-1/16" diameter cutout with a depth of 5-1/16" behind 1/2" drywall. Once the hole is cut, the speaker can be dropped in and the Rotating Cams can be tightened, allowing you to secure the speaker to the drywall without any extra assembly. If you will not be mounting the speakers in drywall, make sure the wall or ceiling material can safely support the weight of each speaker before installation; each speaker weighs approximately 5 pounds.

Performance Enclosure Compatibility: An optional Polk Audio custom built LCi Performance Enclosure gives the LCi in-wall/in-ceiling speaker the performance edge by hiding a complete, perfect-volume speaker cabinet within the wall before the wall is even completed. The LCi Performance Enclosure is specially constructed of high density MDF and fill material in a size that fits securely between wall and ceiling studs in pre-drywall construction. Adjustable brackets make pre-construction installation simple. Vibration-damping foam pads ensure rattle-free performance.
