A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back. Polk Audio's Mobile Monitor Series subwoofers bring out superior performance from lighter materials, so you'll get the impact you want without the extra weight of a conventional system. Advanced engineering and optimized components reproduce your sound with uncompromising accuracy, for low end that is rich and clear. The MM1040 10" 4-ohm subwoofer handles up to 350 watts RMS. A copper voice coil and neodymium magnet motor drives the polymer cone with exceptional efficiency. The carbon composite basket features a "wagon wheel" design that resists flexing during heavy excursion, so your sub hits solidly without distorting. This sub is certified for marine use, and Polk includes corrosion-resistant stainless steel mounting hardware. Features Enclosure Compatibility Features Klippel Optimized: Using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk engineers were able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance, even at extreme listening levels. Polymer Woofer Cone with Butyl Rubber Surrounds: The Polymer Woofer Cones and Butyl Rubber Surrounds will not break down over time and will survive the rigors of harsh automotive environments. High Temperature Copper Voice Coil (50mm) and Polyamide Former: High Temperature 50mm Copper Voice Coil and Polyamide Former withstand the most rigorous use while maintaining extremely low distortion for bass punch and output. Carbon Composite Basket: The woofer's carbon composite basket is lightweight and will not flex during music audio peaks. Nickel Plated Heavy Duty Input Terminals: Nickel plated heavy duty input spring-post terminals accommodate speaker wire up to 8 AWG or twisted pairs of 12 AWG. Preconditioning Period: Mobile Monitor subwoofers will achieve even greater performance once they are thoroughly broken in. To break in your new MM subwoofer, play 20 to 30 hours of music at moderate levels. Marine Certified Woofer: Polk MM Series woofers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars. They also include stainless mounting hardware for corrosion and rust resistance. Enclosure Compatibility Recommended Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 0.66 cubic feet. Recommended Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an ideal internal volume of 1.0 cubic feet using a slot port measuring 13.5" wide x 1" tall x 20" deep. I am driving it with a Lightning Audio LA-600M mono block amp. Even though amp is rated at 400 watts in mono block, and the speaker is only rated at 350 watts, I've had no problems what so ever. The sound is incredible. This one sub sounds better than many 2 sub systems I've heard. Hits really hard with no distortion. I've got it in a small non-ported wedge box under the back seat. Still can't get over the power of such a shallow sub. I'm so impressed, i'm going to get two of these and a 1,000 watt amp for my Mustang convertible. 3 out of 4 people found this helpful Was this review helpful? Written By Ronny, Lexington, KY on Monday, February 14, 2011 This particular subwoofer, the 10" Polk Audio MM1040, is rated to handle up to 350 watts RMS. They have a relatively high SPL, 91dB, and their excursion (Xmax), 25mm, is more in line with 12" or even some 15" subs. These subs can really move some air! At the time of purchase, I was considering Alpine Type R's, Rockford-Fosgate P3 shallow, and Boston Acoustics G3's, along with the MM1040's. Because they would have limited airspace and mounting depth, neither the Type R's nor the G3's would fit, leaving it between the Rockfords and these. Both were on sale so the price would be about the same. Listening to these and the P3's at a local car audio shop, there was no question about it. The Polks sounded so much better. They go lower without a hint of distortion. I've owned Alpine, MTX, and JL Audio subwoofers that cost more but don't sound as good as these. For the price, you'll really be challenged to find a better subwoofer. You may find ones that have better specifications on paper, and some that claim to handle more power. Certainly you'll be able to find subwoofers that cost less. But the Polk Audio MM1040 will likely have better sound, better quality, and better reliability. 6 out of 6 people found this helpful Was this review helpful?
