Our take on the Polk/MOMO MM2084

Polk and accessories specialist MOMO have joined together to create the high-performance Polk/MOMO subs. These stylish subs deliver powerful, accurate bass that sets you apart from the pack — both sonically and visually.

The Polk/MOMO MM2084 8" subwoofer features a polypropylene concave "dish" cone, metalized for maximum rigidity. A huge, high-roll butyl rubber surround controls longer cone excursion for high-impact bass with lower distortion. State-of-the-art laser technology centers the voice coil perfectly in the motor structure's magnetic field for optimized performance.

These high-impact subs feature a triple venting system for maximum air flow, power handling, and reliability. Gaskets on the front and the back of the basket insure an airtight installation. This subwoofer is designed for use in a small, sealed enclosure.

Don't limit yourself to only using these subs in your car — they've passed tough environmental testing that certifies them for marine use as well.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Marine Certified: Polk/MOMO Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars.

Metalized Polypropylene Woofer Cone: This woofer features an ultra-stiff metalized polypropylene Dynamic Balance cone for massive bass. Its Dish Cone design is mechanically supported by a unique Vented Cone Coupler. This support increases the sub's axial rigidity.

Rubber Surround: The cone uses a durable, airtight rubber surround for a long life of extended linear motion.

Stamped Steel Basket: The acoustically inert stamped steel basket offers lower distortion.

NOMEX Spider: The huge, fire-retardant flat NOMEX spider allows extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability.

Klippel Measurement Technology: State-of-the-art laser-based Klippel measurement technology perfectly centers the subwoofer's voice coil in the magnetic field, improving X-max and BL linearity, and the sub's micro and macro dynamics, for deep, precise bass.

Triple Vented: The vented coil/cone coupler, vented spider platform, and vented pole piece all allow cooling air to freely flow over the heat-generating components and better harness all the watts your amp can dish out.

Rubber Magnet Boot: The removable rubber magnet boot provides additional damping and deeper installation flexibility. With the magnet boot removed, the woofer has the following dimensions:

  • Magnet Diameter: 4.755"
  • Depth as top: 3.972"
  • Depth as bottom: 4.351"
Terminals: The woofer has professional grade nickel-plated push terminals that will accept bare wire and pin connectors.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends using this woofer in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.35 cu/ft.

Box Correction

Power Handling: The box incorrectly states that the woofer can handle up to 100 watts RMS and 200 watts peak. In fact, the woofer can handle up to 200 watts RMS and 400 watts peak.

Cutout Diameter Correction

Cutout Diameter Correction: Page 7 of the manuals included with the initial production runs of this woofer lists incorrect cutout diameter specifications; mounting holes cut using the specifications on page 7 will be too large for the woofers. The correct cutout specifications are listed on page 10 of the manual; on page 10, the cutout diameter is called "Mounting diameter".

Nice Subs

Written By Branden, Columbus, OH on Friday, November 21, 2008

These subs are awesome, too bad they're discontinued. I put 2 of these in a 04 Crew Cab S-10. I got them in sealed boxes at 0.35 cu. ft. and I'm running them at 250 watt RMS each on a 1000 watt Kenwood 8104D amp. The subs sound great and easily have more than the two Kicker Comp 8s that they replaced. These subs may even be louder than two Kenwood 10s that I had running at 450 RMS each on a 1700 watt Kenwood 9102D.

i put 2 of these in a 86 regular cab 4x4 in a custom box that i built with a 1000watt sony and they sound better then 2 10" stage 1 rockfords the only reason i didn't give them 5 stars is

1 the screws that come with them didn't have the special tool to install which was a real pain

2 the cut out you have to check because mine was way to big i'm just glad that i checked before i cut.

other then those 2 things i would recommend them to any body

Dual 8s Rule

Written By Jake, California on Sunday, October 05, 2008

All i gotta say is if you put two of these in two seperate ported boxes with .6 cubic feet and tune the port to 50 hz and feed them 250 watts each, you will go deaf.

When i first bought these i installed them in my single cab ranger in a sealed box and i thought they were bomb. eventually i got curious about ported boxes because i had read about how much better they can be than sealed boxes so i made some fitting the description above. THEY ARE SO LOUD. I parked my truck about 100 feet away from a house and pumped up the volume and went into the house and pictures on the wall and other various things were rattling and the bass is audible for LONG distances. Imagine how good it is in my single cab......

BUY THESE, NO QUESTIONS ASKED but keep in mind, having the right box is what brings out the bass.

WOW these subs pound really hard for 8's. I have them hooked up to an alpine amp 200 watts RMS wired at 2 ohms. I have them in my f150 supercrew. Highly recommend. Thanks again for the excellent support Crutchfield.

These subs hit like a ton of bricks!!! Very hard hitting, no distortion, very accurate. I'm feeding them 250w ea from a Rockford Fosgate amp with the subs in a sealed .4 cubic foot box and they sound amazing. Highly recommended!!!

Polk/MOMO MM2084

Written By Scoob, Council Bluffs IA on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Great sounding subs. At first I was a little apprehensive about going from a pair of 10" subs to a pair of these 8's. But I simply don't have room for a big box in the back of my Rubicon. After installing these in a down firing sealed box I was very impressed. Powered by a Kicker ZX300.1 makes for a hard hitting tight bass. They did take about a week to break in though. But they sound even better now then when I first installed them. I have a friend with a single 10" sub in the back of his wrangler and the dual 8's sound MUCH better.

i bought this sub mainly to even out the bass in my 06 sonata. i hooked it up to a pioneer mono 300 watt amp and the amount of bass this sub gives is better than most 12 inch subs.i mounted it into a 8 inch bass tube ported and it kicks. definitely worth every penny.

Great sound

Written By Michael, Newark, DE on Saturday, March 29, 2008

I read a good number of reviews on several different subs and decided on the Polk based solely on what I had read. I was not disappointed at all. For such a small sub, it sure delivers the goods!!! Mounted it in the original enclosure in my 99 Explorer. It fit right in with only a minor modification to the enclosure. Driving it with a 150w Kenwood amp. It handles everything the system can give it. Deep, deep lows!!! Thanks Crutchfield!!!!!!

Very Dissapointed

Written By Glenn, Texas on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I bought six of these to put behind the seat of my '07 GMC Crew Cab. I moved the seat forward 2 inches to accomodate the enclosure size required. I built the enclosure to Polk's specs and powered them with a DD Audio M3 which has the capability to put out well over 3000 watts RMS. I am hugely dissapointed in these subwoofers. In the recommended sealed enclosure they DO NOT play well below 45Hz, they are just plain anemic. Using a well know enclosure design program, I designed an enclosure using the supllied Thiele/Small parameters and the enclosure gave me a sealed box size of 4.3 cubic feet PER SUBWOOFER. For those of you that don't know...that's enough space for a PAIR of average 15's in sealed enclosures. I do not recommend these subs unless you plan to build a box much larger than recommended and give them less power in that box.

Power hungry subs...feed em like 10's

Written By Chris, Tampa, FL on Saturday, December 29, 2007

I recently purchased and installed 2 of these 8" subs from Crutchfield. I can't prove it but the second sub looked like a factory defect. It had a fair amount of glue residue squeezed out from between the cone and the surround. No big deal really because the speaker is fully functional. I installed the 2 8" subs in a sealed, polyfilled, .71ft enclosure that I custom made for the back left corner of my wifes 2006 G-35 coupe (Pain with the angles). Initially I tried using an Alpine MRD-M300 at 2 ohms, feeding each sub 150 watts; that wasn't nearly enough! I'm now going to purchase a Kenwood KAC-X10D and feed them 300 watts each.

As far as sound, I used the Bass Mechanic CD and the subs sound best in the 43-70 hz range, anything below that 43 hz and the 8's will require a low frequency bass boost to fill out.... maybe with more power and the 20 hours of break in time the subs will fill the lows a little better. If you love accurate deep bass I recommend a larger sealed enclosure, give each sub .50 ft3 each and they will offer a deeper, more efficient sound, yet still sound accurate.
