Overview

Our take on the Polk Audio MM461P

Polk Audio continues its tradition of making brilliant-sounding speakers in stylishly designed packages — their Mobile Monitor (MM) Series speakers look great and sound even better. The lightweight acrylic frames provide strong, flex-free support for the speakers' component assemblies, and because they're also smaller than in previous models, the speakers fit into more places in more vehicles.

The Polk MM461P 4"x6" plate speakers feature honeycomb-textured woven glass fiber composite woofer cones that respond very quickly for a clean, crisp, and powerful sound. Large voice coils — over an inch in diameter — give the speaker high power-handling capability and extended reliability.

Silk 3/4" dome tweeters add a sweet high end that blends perfectly with the low notes so all your music stays in harmonic balance, from the electric bass all the way up to the cymbals.

Important Note: These Polk speakers use a low-impedance design to pull more power safely from your car stereo or amplifier. This design is compatible with virtually all factory and aftermarket stereos.

Note: The oversized terminals on these speakers won't connect to a Crutchfield wiring harness. A free 10-pack of female quick slides that you can splice onto our harness will be included with your speaker purchase.

Plate Speaker Install and sound

Written by: Fred from Phoenix, AZ on December 31, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The installation into my Sunfire ragtop went very smooth and easy. The sound from these speakers was everything I expected from Polk. They perform equally well whether I am listening to Bach fugues, the Who, Yes, or Yngwie Malmsteen. Excellent speakers with accurate sound reproduction.

Pros: Plate configuration made speaker alignment and matching very easy.

Cons: None.

Good Sound, Flimsy mounting

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Yep, the mounting tabs leave some to be desired and none of the holes come closed to lining up with a standard 4x6 template. Sounds better than factory. Great highs. Think of something with more power for the back speakers if you like some bass.

Happy with Purchase

I'm at the very start of building my system, and choose these to start with since i got em on sale! HUGE difference over stock, still have the stock HU in a Silverado.. Big bang for a little speaker! The tabs wont break if you dont over tighten?! I used S.D. and built it up around the speaker so it squeezes into the material, noticed the Tabs are a little higher than the surround, probably why people break off the mounting tabs.

Not worth the Polk Name!

2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Agree with other reviewer, sound not that much better then stock, mounting ears are very cheap & break no matter how hard you try not to & I work on vehicles for a living. Also right rear blew in less then a year on stock GM stereo (05 Silverado Ext. Cab- no bose or onstar w/six speaker system). Buy something else for this money price point!

2001 GMC Sierra 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just put these in as replacements in the rear of an 01' GMC extended cab and I am not impressed. They sound better than the factory but I am sure you can find a better speaker for the money. You are truly paying for the Polk name, not Polk quality. The flimsy mounting tabs break easy and I had to grind off the connectors in in order to allow the Crutchfield wiring harness to fit. For the money spent on these fair sounding respected name speakers I could have gotten a high end not so popular great sounding speaker. Please look at other options.

2001 Jeep Wrangler
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to install in the dash of my 2001 Wrangler. They sound great and really add a high balance to my total system. They are great for adding high clarity to other components in the system. I am running these off of the head unit's amp (50w per/ch) and it is plenty of power. Thanks for the great service Crutchfield!
[Editor's Note: The adapter needed to install 4x6" speakers in the wrangler dash is no longer available. We now recommend 4" speakers for this location.]

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Klippel Optimized Components: Using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk engineers were able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance, even at extreme listening levels.

Woofer Cones: Woven glass composite 3.5" woofer cones feature tremendous stiffness-to-mass ratio. Lower mass means faster transients and finer detail.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds. The airtight rubber surrounds stand up to moisture, sunlight and extreme temperatures while allowing long excursion linear motion and years of reliable use.

Silk/Polymer Composite Tweeters: The speakers feature 3/4" liquid-cooled silk/polymer composite soft-dome tweeters for clearer, more accurate highs.

Large Diameter Voice Coils: Large diameter, 30mm voice coils increase the speaker's reliability and power handling capacity.

2-way Crossover Network: The built-in 2-way crossover network sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver for cleaner sound and better imaging.

Carbon Composite Basket: The speaker's carbon composite plate and basket is lightweight and will not flex during music audio peaks.

Mounting: The speakers can be top-mounted in a metric 4"x6" opening, or top-mounted in a U.S. standard 4"x6" opening.

Marine Certified Woofer: Polk MM Series speakers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars. They also include stainless mounting hardware for corrosion and rust resistance

Speaker Terminals: These speakers have 0.25" positive (+) terminals and 0.187" negative (-) terminals, which are too large for the vehicle-specific speaker harnesses supplied by Crutchfield for many vehicle applications. It is recommended that a pack of assorted female quick slides (item # 120FQS10PK) be purchased and spliced to the harnesses to adapt them to the speaker terminals.
