No room for tower speakers? No problem. Get rich sound with deep, high-impact bass from Polk's Monitor 40 bookshelf speaker. It sports dual 5-1/4" Dynamic Balance® woofers and a 1" Dynamic Balance silk/polymer dome tweeter. The highs are vibrant and detailed, while the mids and lows are bold and clear. A rear-panel flared port reinforces the bass without introducing sound-muddying noise. And the rock-solid MDF construction virtually eliminates resonance.

At about 16" tall, the Monitor 40 will fit in rooms where tower speakers will not, and its high-efficiency design lets it produce big sound without loss of clarity. Dual 5-way binding posts allow for bi-wiring or bi-amping. For even better bass extension from your stereo music, just team the Monitor 40 up with a Polk powered subwoofer. Plus, you can put together a voice-matched Polk Monitor home theater speaker system for thrilling surround sound! Use the 40s as front and surround speakers for small-to-medium-sized rooms, or pair them up with the Polk Monitor 60 or Polk Monitor 70 towers for larger rooms.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: Each speaker features two lightweight, yet stiff Bi-Laminate composite woofers with good damping, giving you high efficiency, excellent bass, and low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" fabric/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. Each tweeter uses a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Acoustically Inert Cabinets: The speaker cabinets feature all-MDF construction with internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance.

Ports: There is a single critically-tuned port opening on the rear of each speaker that has low port noise for increased and extended bass response.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: Each speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

Note

Frequency Response Note: The overall frequency response is 47Hz-25kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 57-24kHz.

Great fidelity - Music.

Written By Theetronic, Victorville, CA on Thursday, August 15, 2013

I recently started a Cd collection. I grew tired of the missing sound of mp3. I missed the way cds sound and feel. So I bought a stereo receiver, 21 band equalizer, 4 polk audio monitor 40 series ii. Mounting brackets, 200 Cd player. Polk psw12 sub.. let me tell you best response and accurate attack on notes. Where the monitors cut off at 65hrtz the psw12 sweeps it perfectly starting at 32htz.. Gotta separate your sounds biposting Hi's Mids and Lows. Mp3 can't offer that. By the way I can't use all four just to loud... Apartment..

Pros: Sizzling Hi's Characteristic Mids Puchy bass - Has a great presence / audio image

Cons: A little bigger then I thought. But built well.

Great Bookshelf Monitors

Written By Zack, Fredonia, NY on Wednesday, March 07, 2012

These are great bookshelf monitors. I've had mine for about 6 months and I've been very impressed. They're not very expensive but they're designed with a lot of care. They're designed to have very little "muddiness" in the midrange, which makes these speakers very clear. Frequency response sounds pretty flat from 70Hz-22kHz which is awesome for speakers at this price. Some reviews I've seen on the web say that the Monitor 40s don't have enough bass, but that's to be expected- they taper off around 60Hz. I have Polk Audio's PSW10 and it compliments the Monitor 40s very well.

These bookshelf speakers are a great value!

Pros: -very clear, even in lower midrange -89dB sensitivity.. they have some power -Pair well with a subwoofer

Cons: -They're almost as deep as they are tall, take a lot more room than you'd expect

Polk Audio Monitor 40

It's unfair to compare the Monitor line to the LSi line. The Monitor 40's LSi counterpart is almost three times as expensive! Sure, the Monitor 40 is a bit lacking in the deep bass, but it is a bookshelf speaker (and a relatively inexpensive one at that). For what it is, I was actually quite impressed by the bass response. Support a pair of these with a decent subwoofer and you won't be disappointed. The treble can get a bit harsh, especially sibilants, but this is not a problem at moderate listening volumes.

Polk monitor speakers

Written By howzitkauai, Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii on Monday, March 02, 2009

Excellent speaker! Replaced home theatre system with these Polk speakers. I formerly used 603 series speakers (combination of 603's & 601's, plus a 600 center speaker) and found that the these Polk speakers were clearer, more transparent, and better bass for home theatre use than the old ones; stressing - BETTER FOR HOME THEATRE USE. These speakers were larger than the conventional bookshelf sized speakers and produced better, tighter bass and better clearer vocals sounds. I replaced the surround side and back speakers with Polk dipole/bipole speakers as well and a Polk center speaker. Movies are now better sounding than what I can find at any movie theatre.

Excellent surround speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to complete my individually pieced together surround sound system, and to hopefully match everything all up perfectly. My center speaker is a Polk Audio CS2 speaker and my front speakers are Polk Audio t90e tower speakers, which sound just great together. However, I was not quite satisfied with my Sony surround speakers, so I replaced them with the Polk audio Monitor 40's and I am amazed by the difference they made in my set up. If you like the sound of Polk Audio speakers don't hesitate to buy these, you won't be disappointed.

Tight bass, clear highs - not your typical bookshelf speaker. Driven by a
Denon DRA-37 stereo Receiver - these speakers sound great.

Polk Monitor 40 - No shortage of bass

Written By Luigi, Erie, PA on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these speakers for over two months and they sound great. Some people have said that they are low on bass. I used these speakers many times without a subwoofer and they do put out great bass for a speaker this size. It is not stellar, but given the fact that they have five inch woofers they do sound great. I have them paired with other Polk speakers and a small subwoffer and they do fill a room that's 45 by 25 feet.

What a Difference!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added these speakers to the boxed Onkyo system I purchased a year or so ago. What a difference they make! From what I have seen, most boxed systems have mediocre speakers. This set makes the most of all the power my Onkyo receiver possesses! I recommend this set highly as a great upgrade to the original speakers of a boxed system.

Polk Audio Monitor 40

Written By kelvin, white plains ,md on Friday, January 02, 2009

mid range and treble response are very good but I was dissapointed with bass reponse. I found the enclosure to be very cheap feeling and light(weight). I would suggest adding a good sub to get better low end sound.
LSI series are light years better, save up for them.

Impressed!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally wanted tower speakers for my fronts, but due to my furniture
location, I went with these instead. These speakers performed above and
beyond my expectations of bookshelf speakers! I have them paired with a
CS2 center speaker, OWM3 surround speakers, and PSW10 sub. After
connecting them to my Onkyo 805, I did the Audyssey auto-calibration and
fine-tuned them with an SPL meter. I am adding another PSW10 to
complete my 7.2 set-up, but this system blows away my old Sony HTiB.
Great speakers!!

Incredible Difference!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers as replacements to the originals that came with my Onkyo HT 800 system. The difference was incredible! I've long been a fan of Polk quality, and these two bookshelf units don't disappoint! I can't think of more "bang for the buck" with any other pair of front speakers. I also purchased a CS-2 Polk center speaker. All three of them together are fabulous!

I definitely recommend.

Clear & Clean - benefits from bi-amping

Written By Sam, NYC on Friday, October 31, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picked up these little gems based on other reviews here & I'm not disappointed. These are good speakers, the low-volume form factor is perfect for clean sound in a smaller space. { think living in NYC }

Of note - these are very much clean/neutral warmth sounding speaker & as suggested in another forum, I tried bi-amping and found it worthwhile for my setup.

Mate's well with a sub, but that isn't required - they'll stand alone just fine.

Good sound on a budget!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i have the polk monitor 70's and the rti-a 3's from crutchfield but holy moly. for the price these little muscle cars are the king of all speakers. when i ordered them i thought that it was a waste of time considering the money. once again the sales department at crutchfield proved me wrong and sent me the bang for the bang champs! if your on a budget dont fret you can have it all with these.

Clear clean sound!

Written By Craig, North Carolina on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

I've been using these for almost a year now with a CS-2 center channel, Monitor 30s rear, and two PSW-125 subs. Driven now with a new Yamaha RX-V463.

I still can't believe how great these sound. Clear, clean open sound makes our home theater sound fantastic. I replaced very expensive Infinities with these, and these sound much more clear and open...hard to believe, but true!

Highs are open and crisp without being strident. Mids are clean, clear and open.

GREAT home theater without spending a lot of money!

great speakers

Speakers sound great. they are used as left and right channels in my home theater. They look good, but a little bigger than I wanted. Correction, bigger than my wife wanted. Size is the only reason for not getting 5 stars.

Full size sound in bookshelf form

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always loved the warm sound of Polk speakers. When upgrading my most recent system I wanted floor standing sound but because of the room setup I needed something that aesthetically was somewhat smaller. The Monitor 40's were perfect, they have a very nice mid to low punch before they crossover to my sub and match great with the CS1 center channel. You will not be disappointed.

Polk Audio Monitor 40's

Written By Sagar, Basking Ridge, NJ on Thursday, February 16, 2006

These speakers are, in a word, spectacular! I bought these to replace front Left/Right floor standing 400-watt speakers. These not only look MUCH sleeker but also sound crisp and clean. I have a Polk Audio Subwoofer, and Polk Audio 2 rear/surround (R15) setup and they all sound amazing. Believe me you will not be disappointed by Polk Audio.
