Great value - but can do better

Written By Paul, Seattle, WA on Friday, January 30, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I notice that this speaker is now discontinued at Crutchfield, so this review may be redundant.

The Polk Audio Monitor 50 passes that crucial test in my home that it is considered to be a fine addition to the furniture by my wife, and not an ugly electronic device - these speakers look good, the wood has a beautiful tone and looks like they cost more than they do.

The sound is very reasonable, but not as full as I was expecting from such a large device - these speakers are better than average, adequate I'd say.

In summary, I expect that these will be sitting in my living room for a good 10 years and when I think about that I kick myself for not getting something better. I have now effectively resigned a percentage of my life to 'adequate' rather than 'great' sound for my entertainment system....

Great Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After spending some time researching various speakers, reading reviews and speaking to the staff of Crutchfield, I decided on the Polk Monitor 50's and I have to say I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The sound is crisp, clear, very warm and responsive. I've already noticed sounds in songs, I've never use to hear before. I have read some people mention that these lack Bass and was planning on purchasing a powered Sub at a later stage, however after installing these puppies, I'm not sure I need it. I do also have to take a moment to compliment Crutchfield on stelar customer Service. One of my speakers arrived a little banged up, I called CF who had me return it and 2 days later I had a replacement-I was very impressed by this and it gave me the confidence to purchase from them again. As for my Monitors, I'm loving them, but if you ask my wife, she would say that she is not
I would highly recommend these to anyone who is wanting a quality speaker without breaking the bank. I plan on adding 2 more to my set real soon and CF will be my first and only stop.

Not too bad

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The bass definitely isn't there like it was it my old Acoustic Research speakers, and I feel like these are a step down from those. However, for the price they are not bad. A subwoofer would be recommended with these.

Unbelievable sound for this price.

This is my first set of Polk speakers and I am very impressed with the clarity and detail that they produce for the price. The bass isn't there like my higher priced Klipsch but I knew this before I bought them. A subwoofer is a must for these towers. If you already own a sub or plan on getting one to go along with these you will definatley not be dissapointed! They sound amazing!

Great speakers!

These are my first pair of Polk speakers & I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The Monitor 50's sound fantastic listening to music or watching movies. Honestly, I can't say enough good things about these reasonably priced gems. I'll be buying Polk again!

Great value for the cost. The highs and mid's are good but you definitely need a subwoofer to augment the bass.

Great sound, light on the budget

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice speakers for those seeking quality sound without breaking the bank. While I admit to not being an audiophile, these speakers sounded better than many more expensive ones I auditioned locally before purchasing. Coupled with a decent subwoofer, and you've got the basis for a nice sound system or home theater.
Packaging and finish is just what you'd expect. My only gripe is the feet are not adjustable for slightly uneven surfaces. For those of you with hardwood floors, you might also consider some sort of "coaster" for the feet to sit in.

Great value, sound

Written By gibb, Columbus, OH on Saturday, August 18, 2007

I wanted a pair of tower speakers to go with my new Onkyo reciever, but didn't want to spend a fortune. These speakers were a great value and looked very good. The sound is very good and Crutchfield did a great job in customer service. First pair of speakers, one was the wrong color, second set the boxes were beat up, but third set were OK. All in all, great speakers at a great price and great customer service from Crutchfield.

get lost in the sound

Written By jeff, conover,nc on Friday, July 06, 2007

just got these speakers and they sound great...nice highs and midrange, lack the heavy bottom end,but is acceptable for normal listening especially rap and metal that is bass heavy.
i mainly listen to any metal then rock and pop then soft easy listening.but thought i would compare different music to test them out and i havent found any music that they dont handle well, classical, country, rap, gospel all sounded great!
i bought them to upgrade a really old pair of polks nobody remembers from late 80's monitor5jr+ bookshelf speakers that sound just a good as they did when i bought them. i have a onkyo 604 receiver, the 50's,monitor5jr's,infinity bookshelfs that are just as old as the 5 jr's and polk psw12 sub.
all purchased from crutchfield over the years been a customer for almost 20 years and will continue!
they are a top notch customer friendly company.
buy them you will not be dissapointed!

Meet expectation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought pair of Monitor 50, CS1 and PSW12 with recommended cabling (Monster Cable "Original" with Pin Connection). Unfortunately Pin Connected cables is not the most appropriate for Monitor 50, even more for Yamaha V2600. Finally connected system worket as I expected (very well). If you'll buy similar products, had better to use cables without Pin Connectors.

great set of speakers

Written By Bryan, saginaw, mi on Sunday, April 08, 2007

I've owned these speakers for about a year now, and I couldn't be more pleased. Before purchasing I listened to comparable speakers and these simply had more of the whole package i was looking for. They have a very good balance of crisp highs, smooth midrange, and acceptable bass performance. I have a subwoofer for most of the lows, but these speakers on their own are still able to provide a good amount of bass for normal listening. They are a great price, and their performance is very impressive, I would highly suggest listening to these speakers if you are looking for an affordable set of floorstandings.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a set of Cherry Monitor 50's for a Home Theater set up. These speakers paired with a Polk CS2 and the bonus Polk 10 inch subwoofer are an excellent setup for movies, sports and listening to music as well. You can spend more and get some nicer speakers, but it would have to be much more, but these speakers are very good and hit my price spot very nicely. The Monitor 60's are nice, but I preferred th 50's and they are for a theater setup. With these speakers you can expand to 5.1 or 7.1 if desired, or just use as a 3.1 or a 2 channel stereo system. There is good bass and the sound is clear and natural, not tinty or to much mid range.
I suggest you check them out. Only your ears can tell if these are the speakers for you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Originally I had decided to order a pair of Monitor 30 bookshelf speakers with stands but switched to the Monitor 50's (cherry) at literally the last second. What a great move. I couldn't be more happy with my decision. The Monitor 50's are attractive, produce very pure sounds/tones and are solidly constructed. They by far exceed any expectations that I might have had. I highly recommend this quality product.

Terrific Value!

You can pay a lot more for floor standing speakers. Don't! Get a pair of the Polk Monitor 50's right now. Crisp, clear highs. Rich, smooth mids. The balance is out of sight. Add a quality sub for the lows. You will be thrilled!

A friend told me about Crutchfield. After months of saving my pennies and research on the Crutchfield site I replaced all of my speakers with Polk Audio. I now have a pair of M-50 towers in the front, R-15s in the back and a PSW-12 sub. They are matched very well and all I can say is WOW!!!!! Many reviewers have said they had trouble with port noise coming from the PSW-12. I don't get it, mine was just a plug and go. No noise that shoudn't be there.

My only complaint is that I didn't deal with Crutchfield from the get go. I won't make that mistake again. Delivery was fast and on time. I saved hundreds and couldn't be happier. Although I don't think my neighbors are as happy as I am.

Now Im saving my pennies to upgrade my receiver. I'll be talking with the Crutchfield specialists to see which receiver will best fit my needs. They have been very helpful so far.

Thanks Crutchfield

Music to my ears

Written By Jim, Sacramento Ca on Tuesday, May 09, 2006

When building our home theater system, i was looking for clean balanced sound with out using rear surround speakers. I have a small living room with an attached kitchen and dining room.

We listened to Polk M 50's and Infinity, and Sony speakers. The Polk's just blew away the other speakers...

We purchased 2 Monitor 50's and a PSW10...we waited to look for a smaller center channel. The CS1 and 2 are huge..but with huge sound. We actually used a monitor 40 surround sreaker as the center channel. It sounds great!

Get a sub, the 50's have no bass!

Buy the whole series

Written By tim-o-t, Seaside, Ca on Thursday, April 07, 2005

Everything the other 2 reviewers said is right on. I would like to add, however, if you get a chance, buy a complete set of monitor series. I have a psw10, monitor 50, monitor 30, and a cs1. They are all voice matched and nothing over powers anything else. I will be purchasing the psw12 soon, because it can hit lower notes than the 10. I highly reccomend this setup. The monitor series is a great bargin in the world of high end audio, dont pass it up

Nice and balanced

Written By Dezi, Chino Hills, Ca. on Tuesday, March 29, 2005

Let me start by saying that I really wanted to purchase the Monitor 70s instead of thes 50s. I listened to them in two different Circuit City's. One of the CCs had two different listening rooms, so I actually listened to them 3 times head-to-head against the Monitor 70s.

No contest. The 50s sounded so much livelier, and much more balanced than the 70s. The 70s sounded too bottom-heavy (too much bass). The bass drowned out the mids and highs. The 50s sound just right.

I also got to compare the 50s against some Infinitys and Sonys (the only other speakers in the listening room). The 50s are just so much more balanced (I know I keep repeateing myself). What I can I say?

Obviously, the only "drawback" I can see is they lack the bottom end, but I have a Velodyne sub to handle those duties.

I also compared these head-to head with some Klipsch Synergy F-2. However, I had already bought these, so this competition took place in my home!

No comparison. the smaller, less expensive speaker took down the bigger, more expensive speakers.

This is my third set of Polk's (RTi-28, RTi-38), and I doubt I will ever own another brand of speaker.

Way to go Polk!

Awesome Sound

Written By Paul, Dallas, Tx on Tuesday, March 22, 2005

If you want clear crisp sound these are the speakers for you. I am running them with a Harmon Kardon receiver and they work perfect together. The one thing they do lack is a lot of bottom end bass, I added a Polk Audio sub and I am enjoying every minute. Awesome product I am a Polk customer for life.

Product Research

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: The speaker features two lightweight, yet stiff Bi-Laminate composite woofers with good damping, giving you high efficiency, excellent bass, and low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeter: The speaker has a 1" fabric/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. The tweeter uses a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Acoustically Inert Cabinet: The speaker cabinet features all-MDF construction with internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance.

Port: There is a single critically-tuned port opening on the front of the speaker that has low port noise for increased and extended bass response.

Stabilizer Feet: The large stabilizer feet ensure stability on carpet and hard floors for precise bass response and superior imaging.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speaker.

Magnetically Shielded: The speaker is magnetically shielded, allowing you to place it near your television without distorting the picture.

Frequency Response Note: The overall frequency response is 42 Hz-25 kHz and the -3 dB frequency response is 57 Hz-24 kHz.
