Our take on the Polk Audio Monitor 70

by Tom Mathew
Polk Audio

Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

For detailed sound that packs a serious wallop, check out the Monitor 70, sold individually, from Polk Audio. This top-of-the-line Monitor tower speaker sports an impressive speaker array for wide-open, lifelike sound. A 1" Dynamic Balance® dome tweeter turns out bright, detailed highs, while the four 6-1/2" Dynamic Balance woofers deliver rock-solid mids and bass. By using multiple, relatively small woofer cones, the Monitor 70 really excels in the midrange, and produces more detailed bass response. The overall result is incredibly spacious, three-dimensional sound.

Pick up a pair of Monitor 70s for great performance with stereo music. Or you can make this impressive tower an integral part of a voice-matched Monitor home theater system. The Monitor 70 is made with non-resonant MDF, and includes front-to-back and side-to-side internal bracings for cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound. Bold, fat stabilizer feet keep this slender speaker steady on carpet or hardwood floors. And dual 5-way binding posts allow for bi-wiring or bi-amping. For stereo music or multichannel home theater, the Monitor 70 delivers high-impact sound.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

6-1/2" Polymer Composite Woofers: The speaker features four lightweight, yet stiff Bi-Laminate composite woofers with good damping, giving you high efficiency, excellent bass, and low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeter: The speaker has a 1" fabric/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. The tweeter uses a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Acoustically Inert Cabinet: The speaker cabinet features all-MDF construction with internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance.

Port: There is a single critically-tuned port opening on the front of the speaker that has low port noise for increased and extended bass response.

Stabilizer Feet: The large stabilizer feet ensure stability on carpet and hard floors for precise bass response and superior imaging.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speaker.

Magnetically Shielded: The speaker is magnetically shielded, allowing you to place it near your television without distorting the picture.

Note

Frequency Response Note: The overall frequency response is 30 Hz-25 kHz and the -3 dB frequency response is 40 Hz-24 kHz.

great speakers!

Written By Anonymous, Los Angeles, Ca on Wednesday, January 27, 2010

these speakers are really great. i listen to lots of differ music but mainly rap/hip hop and they kick the bass out really well. really i would say you wouldnt need a sub cause these things punch the lows, but i like everything shaking so they sound that much better! i actually made the shelves fall in my room from the bass, and my room is about 15x30 ft. sickkkk

Really nice speaker!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased two monitor 70's and a CS2 center to help start my first real HT system and WOW they are really nice. The sound they can produce at this price is mind blowing. No harsh tones through the highs --> lows, clean clear sound. The lows are pretty good for the speaker but I would still suggest a sub if you want some room shaking bass. The monitor 70's are Bi-Amped from a Denon AVR-2808CI and I think that helps the speakers perform as nice as they do. They look great and are seem to be VERY well built, again VERY impressive for this price range. My only complaint is with the feet, I wish they were adjustable, I live in a Loft with original 200 year old wood floors... The floors have been refinished, but at 200 years old, they will never be perfectly even. As far as Crutchfields service goes... They are amazing and make everything so easy for the customer. It does not matter to them if you are spending $50 or into the thousands of $$, they are friendly, treat you with respect and are very helpful.

Well-worth the money

Written By Raimund, Anchorage, AK on Saturday, November 01, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After a great deal of research, I bought the Polk Audio Monitor 70 speakers. I don't like giving anything 5 stars, and won't here, but have detected no flaws in these speakers. Being a guitar-rock enthusiast, adequate bass was a prime requirement, and these Polk Audio Monitor 70's did not disappoint. With proper acoustic placement, you should NOT need a subwoofer. I have bi-wired my set (be sure to utilize this capability, and consider good quality 16-gauge speaker wire), running on an old amp and pre-amp, and the speakers significantly out-perform my old Bose pair. I could have sworn that Ritchie Blackmore was playing his Stratocaster at my house last night! And, you WILL notice that some elements of your music reveal themselves for the first time through these speakers. CD's which sounded a bit annoying on my old speakers was listenable, or better, on this set. The price allows you to get your money's worth, and Crutchifeld not only ships for free (price UPS shipping for speakers on your own, and calculate the savings for this alone), they also back up the purchase with the 30-day money-back guarantee, and offers world-class customer service, as well. How can you lose?

great tower speakers

Written By stetson, Dawsonville,Ga on Friday, October 17, 2008

I've had the speakers for a little over 5 yrs now and am very happy with these speakers. with the right amp they sound incredible and can get very very very loud!. i have them running off a Yamaha HTR-5760 and plan on getting an amp to really give them some juice. the whole speaker blends very very well and the accuracy is incredible for the price. the tweeter is sensitive. if you have a cheap receiver and crank these up you WILL blow the tweeter. I personally found this out when I had them hooked up to an Onyko HTR-500. anyways, the bass is great, but not earth shaking which is fine. all in all for the price, the quality and craftsmenship is there. i will say the stupid grills are sensitive and cam be broken pretty easyly if u try and take off the grills in and award fashion. hope this review was helpful.

looks great sounds better

Written By marc, carmel california on Friday, August 15, 2008

Outstanding clear , opened up a new world of great sound. I have these with a CSA4 and FXI3 surrounds. Still have two small sonys for rear rear surround. 100 watt-subwoofer is great but not needed. These speakers deliver a beutiful deep bass. Sony XBR5, everything powered by Sony E.S.5300, plenty of power ( the 5300 is a power house and all around terrific unit. Polk provides beautiful well made products that sound even better than they look. 5 stars.......

Wonderful speaker!

Written By Edmund, Beckley, WV on Thursday, December 20, 2007

Clear highs and tight bass are how I would characterize these speakers. With poorly mixed music - these speakers will expose every flaw! Paired with the Denon stereo system I just purchased to replace the 20 year old JVC system I had (also purchased from Crutchfield) I'm hearing instruments I've never heard before.

Sorry I Purchased These Speakers

Written By Larry, Santa Fe, NM on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

We purchased these speakers about 2 months ago. They are very clear but my wife and I find them extremely harsh and metallic. Some tracks are actually painful to listen to. We are quite surprised. We purchased a subwoofer and that helped somewhat but not enough. We should have returned them but we were busy with other things. I am sorry I purchased them.

Exceptional value and quality

Written By Jason, Reading, PA on Friday, August 31, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To begin, buy these speakers; you won't regret it. As to why you should buy them, there are plenty of reasons. They look great, and sound even better. The price is reasonable (and maybe even a little cheap) for what you're getting. These speakers have a relatively small footprint and look beautiful with a rack full of black components and pack enough punch to annoy your entire block of neighbors. They've rounded out my fully-Polk 7.1 setup, which is now, in my opinion, superior to going to an actual movie theater. These speakers can handle anything you throw at them, from action films to classical music to metal, all without distorting a second of it. These have quickly become my all-time favorite speakers...

Nice speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, I am not a home theater expert, but I like the Polk monitor 70. They have a nice bass, even without a powered sub-woofer. Also, I have heard instruments on the high end that I haven't heard before. They are good for music or dvd's. I did listen to a lot of speakers before buying them, and I was impressed with the sound for the price.

skeptical

Written By Serge, Philladelphia, PA on Sunday, May 29, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All I can say about the Polk Monitors is exceptionally surprising. I upgraded from the RS series of Infinity speakers after quite a few years. I was truly skeptical, never having owned Polk speakers. From the stats, I was convinced that the Polk Monitors would be a great upgrade for my aging system. After eight years, I wanted to my speakers to do other duty and redo my primary entertainment system. I am so glad I followed my instinct and went with the Monitor series, rather than the LSi or RT series. Having sufficient subwoofer power through a Velodyne setup, I was purely concerned with the response from 150hz and up. The Monitors were ridiculously clear and accurate! I was vindicated with the incredible response from these speakers. From the first time, I was quite pleased with the flat reproduction of varied music. From thumping bass to higher end vocals, they surely reproduce an accurate representation of the original track.
If you are looking for a nice upgrade, and unimpressed by your current speaker manufacturer's product, then give a shot to Polk's Monitors. It is well worth it, and frankly, they are at a steal price.
P.S. I work for neither Crutchfield nor Polk. Good listening to all!
