Polk builds them right to sound their best

The OWM3's modest size doesn't stop it from delivering rich sound. Polk's Dynamic Balance® drivers and super-dense, acoustically inert enclosures resist resonance that can cause distortion. Instead, you'll hear detail and dynamics that make your music and movies more lifelike. This speaker's careful design and smart technology ensure clear midrange response. For more low-end punch, add a Polk powered subwoofer.

Features

Multi-Purpose Loudspeaker: The Polk Audio OWM3 is a versatile speaker made to fit a variety of applications. You can use them as a pair of stereo speakers or part of a 2.1 system in a second zone. You can also use them as part of a multi-channel system. With multiple mounting options, you can place the speakers virtually anywhere.

2-Way Driver Design: The Polk Audio OWM3 employs a two-way driver design. Each speaker has a 1" silk dome, Dynamic Balance tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. Each speaker features a 4-1/2" polypropylene cone woofer which employs Capacitive Coupling Bass Technology for a low frequency response despite its size.

Note: The overall frequency response is 80Hz-25kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 100-22kHz.

Glass-filled ABS Cabinets: The acoustic suspension cabinets feature glass-filled ABS construction, which creates an acoustically inert enclosure. The cabinet ensures an extremely clean midrange response with low coloration. The black finish blends easily with any decor.

Binding Posts: Each speaker has a set of gold-plated 5-way binding posts on the bottom of the angled rear panel. The binding posts will accept bare wire, spade lugs, pin connectors, dual or single banana plugs (removal of binding post plugs required).

Multiple Mounting Options: The OWM3 is suited for on-wall mounting or placement on a tabletop or shelf. The speakers have four 4-way keyhole slots on the back, and come with rubber bumpers and an attachable base. There are seven different mounting possibilities: angled wall mount, corner mount, horizontal wall mount, vertical wall mount, shelf mount (using included base), horizontal shelf mount (using supplied rubber bumpers), and wall-mounted with an optional articulating wall-mount bracket (using the 1/4-20 threaded insert).

Q
Can you hook these up to a small TV or monitor without a receiver?
calvin hunt  Jan 07, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Calvin, and thank you for your question. The Polk Audio OWM3 speakers need amplification, most TVs would not have. Most TVs will have either an optical audio output, a mini 3.5mm audio out, or possibly left and right RCA out. Either of the three would need to connect to an amplifier/receiver first, then the amplifier/receiver to the OWM3s.

Can you hook these up to a small TV or monitor without a receiver?
calvin hunt  Jan 07, 2023
1 answer
A
These speakers have no internal power so they must be connected to an external receiver or amp. We do have other powered speakers that would not need to be connected a separate receiver and friendly advisors standing by at 800.324.9695 that can get you set up with a perfect set for you so please give us a call and we will get you taken care of!

Q
Can you use banana plugs with these?
robert  Feb 18, 2022
3 answers
A
To easily remove the center banana plug cap, just completely unscrew the plastic knobs, the caps just fall out then
christopher  Jan 15, 2023
A
You absolutely can and that's exactly how I have them wired. HOWEVER, the manual is HORRIBLE. No where does it explain how to do this. The speakers, like most better quality manufacturers, has what is called a "5 way binding post" which means: 1. bare wire, 2. spades, 3. banana plugs, 4. straight pin connector (like a mini banana plug but place thought the terminal hole) and 5. some type of clip or clamp. All except 3 and 5 require the clamp nut to be tightened (screwed down). Back to the Polks: what's completely missing is the instructions that explain in order to use banana plugs, you have to carefully punch out the center cap. That said, I would make sure you are happy with the product looks, function, performance etc by using bare wire before permanently punching out the Red and Black center cups (thus exposing the banana plug receiving hole). This issue is not unique to Polk. So many speaker brands do this for some inexplicable reason. It is completely idiotic that they don't ship the terminal covers ready for use with any type of connection the end user prefers. It is inexcusable. For this reason alone, I almost didn't purchase these, but the speakers matched my needs in terms of mounting and size (I had very limited options). I paired these with a 10" subwoofer using high level (speaker level) inputs to the sub. The sound with the sub is truly sublime and engaging for 2 channel audio. Hope this helps. These are essentially bookshelf speakers that stand on a shelf or can mount to a wall. They work great as surround speakers so long as you have the available surround speaker output with traditional speaker wire. They are not wireless or powered.
anthony  Sep 13, 2020
A
These are passive speakers, requiring them to be wired.

Just got a new receiver with Atmos, i can not do ceiling in-walls. what works better dolby enabled speakers(reflecting) or front height and rear height speakers for 5.2.4? Was considering these OWM 3's if I do height speakers.
steven  Nov 03, 2019
1 answer
A
Dolby enabled speakers will work better than these speakers placed in the front and rear height locations for creating a Dolby Atmos sound. Height speakers are in the wrong locations in the room for their audio to properly mix with the other speakers for this sound

Hi Rosendo, thank you for your question. Unfortunately, the Polk Audio OWM3 speakers are not a wireless speaker, and would need to be powered by an amplifier or receiver.

Q
What is the best option for upward firing atmos enabled speakers for an existing Polkaudio system? With these work?
jordan  Nov 19, 2018
1 answer
A
I have these speakers and had always used them for the height speakers with the Yamaha amp. Since they were behind and above the other speakers by a couple of feet, I just changed the angle of the speakers to bounce off the ceiling. It seems to work for me without changing out the whole system. A professional would not approve, but we adapt. I have the owm5 for my rear surrounds and they both are great speakers.

Q
Can these speakers be mounted on a speaker stand?
curtis  Sep 15, 2017
3 answers
A
There are a lot of different types of speaker stands, so it is difficult to say for certain. Probably the best way to answer your question would be to say "yes" . . . but the remaining question would be, "how difficult would it be to mount these speakers on a stand?". One set of these speakers is simply resting on bookshelves while the other set is attached to wood mounting brackets (custom built) on the wall. I don't think I would have a problem mounting these speakers on a stand, but someone with little or no mechanical appitude/interest might find it a challenge.

Q
What gauge of speaker wire is recommended for these speakers? I'm running 12 awg in wall already but if it's to much I will change it. Any preferences or thoughts?
myles vande  Mar 28, 2017
2 answers
A
16g or 18g is more than adequate. I would not use any smaller and would NOT go larger than 14g.
satvinder s.  Feb 18, 2022
A
I just set mine up using 16 awg 50 feet from the amp and they are good. I have not tried 12, but it looks like 12 would fit in the wire connector in back of the speaker. Try it and let the speakers decide. I would say rewire only if necessary. I use mine as dining room speakers for music at relatively low levels.

Q
Could these be mounted to the ceiling and used as Atmos speakers? ?
hbluhunter  Mar 14, 2017
2 answers
A
These do not use any kind of special mounting brackets. You don't mount a bracket, then connect the speaker onto it. (That extra piece is a foot for standing the speaker on a shelf or table) For wall mounting, there are "+" (plus-shaped) slots on the back that simply slide onto 2 pan-head screws. You can see the slots in the 2nd picture that shows the back of a speaker. When mounted, gravity holds the speaker down on the screws. I suppose, if secured tightly, they'd stay in place flat on the ceiling. Note that there is a 2nd set of slots on either side of the wire connecting posts. That would allow you to place the screws on the wall, then mount the speaker at an angle in the corner between the wall and ceiling, kind of like crown molding, pointing the speaker 45-degrees down. Or...You could probably just use a strong (automotive) 2-sided tape and stick them onto the ceiling. That, and a little Gorilla Glue, would probably hold them pretty well. There are a couple foam strips included, but I don't remember if they're double-sided. If they are, they'd probably hold things in place until the glue fully bonds and cures. Otherwise, get the good 3M stuff at an auto parts store.

I use mine as the rear channel of my 7.1 surround system along with a pair of Bose 151's. I simply used the template provided with the speakers and used anchors and some pan head screws in the plaster and lathe wall then slid them over the screws and down. I did drill a hole near the bottom of my baseboard and one behind each speaker after I established the hollow span between the 2 X 4s then fed my speaker cable through so no wires are visable. They look great mounted on the wall about 8 FT apart and 5 ft off the floor along with the 151's on either side 12 ft apart on the wall at ceiling level and angled down about 40 degrees. I get some real sweet high and midrange sound from both sets with my easy chair planted in the middle of them and backed against the wall!
rick  Jan 22, 2015
A
I hate mounting anything to a wall personally. Crutchfield has many inexpensive speaker stands for sale. I just bought a pair of Polk surrounds from them and am going to order stands soon. No holes in walls, you can move the stands around if you want, stands are the best way to go.

I never set out to get these speakers specifically... I got them as a bonus on a larger Sonos order as a promotion. That said, I only use them as bookshelf speakers in my office and they are fine for that purpose. I cannot say how suitable they would be as surrounds. I have a full JBL array for my surround and had no need to try them that way. Good luck and happy hunting.
