The wings on this bracket are long enough to let it work with rafters that are 20" apart My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
Will these brackets work in a suspended (drop) ceiling application? I'm looking for a bracket that will take the weight of the speaker and prevent sagging of my thin vinyl panels.

Yes they should. I am using them as ceiling brackets and they work great.

These brackets are made for preconstruction in a hard lid application or where you can attach the straps to studs. You will need something more substantial to transfer the weight to the grid of your drop ceiling.

A
The straps on these brackets are designed to be nailed into the adjacent joists for support. Laying them on top of the ceiling tile might work without anchoring them, however, the full weight of the speaker will be carried by the tile.

No. The wings are very flexible. This is only designed to help drywall installers to cut the hole where you want the speakers. These are not load bearing. Sorry. Try using angle aluminum (from Home Depot) and pop rivers to span the gap in your hung ceiling. Good luck!

Q
Should these brackets be used if installing speakers in a ceiling made of 1/2" or 3/4' thick T&G wood, new construction? Or is thee a better way?
julianne  Oct 30, 2015

A
The actual ceiling thickness of the ceiling condition is nominal when using these brackets as you are primarily purchasing the bracket to provide final speaker placement and to act as a cut out guide for a clean finish install. The brackets offer some support in holding the speaker when installed, but essentially you are just locating the speaker layouts in rough framing phase. So Yes, these brackets would be used for 1/2" or 3/4" thick ceiling condition. With regards to the actual thickness of the ceiling material, the speaker itself has spring fasteners that grab the T&G ceiling. The length of the speaker fasteners is more crucial when considering ceiling thicknesses. Most speakers have a minimum 1-1/4" long spring fastener.
