Cheap Plastic

Written by: Kevin from Seattle, WA on May 3, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price I expected something somewhat more sturdy or better designed. It is cheap, flimsy plastic and I'm curious to see how it holds up to the drywall installers. It almost feels disposable. When I went to attach the mounting tab the tiny, poorly designed locking tab broke as I GENTLY pushed it together as it was obviously weak. I would NOT recommend. I've used other brands of pre-construction brackets in our home and those were made of metal and actually a few dollars cheaper. I am very disappointed.

Pros: None

Cons: Cheap plastic, broke easily while carefully assembling.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok. It does say they are made of plastic however I did expect these to be a bit more sturdy and rigid then they are in reality. Our contractor had two of them come apart when mounting. Once mounted in drywall the frames provide a secure collar to mount the speakers on but don't expect to have these available to test mount your speakers before drywall. Purchased nine of these in different sizes. For this money would have preferred metal.

Pros: Good base for speakers in wall once drywall in place

Cons: Flimsy, cheap, specially the mounting arms.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is for new construction. It's not made to hold speaker on its own.

Pros: open box discount.

Cons: It's made out of plastic. I think it should have been made out of some type of metal.

Wouldn't have installed without this

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would not have installed the speakers without these mounting brackets. The speakers have clamps that turn and apply pressure to the rear side of the wall pulling the speaker tight to the outside of the drywall. These brackets stop the speaker clamp from simply crushing the drywall and rendering the wall useless to holding the speaker in firmly. They could mount a little better to the studs before drywall is put in. They stayed in place and the drywall installers knew exactly where to cutout and easily cutout around the mounting brackets with their rotary drywall cutting tool.

Pros: Keep speaker firmly mounted. Help cut drywall exactly to size.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After spending the money on the mounts for my 7.1 in-wall speaker system, I would not recommend purchasing them. The mounts do not secure the speaker any better than what comes attached to the speaker. I thought I would need them as this was for new construction but I could have easily just cut a hole in the drywall after it was put up. If you are not a DYI, then I could see using the mounting kit for the installer of your drywall as this will leave you with just having to install the speaker; which is extremely easy.

Pros: - great as a guide for the installer of your drywall

Cons: - Expensive for what you get - Doesn't secure the speaker any better than the factory mounts on the speaker - plastic supporting straps seem flimsy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These brackets are flimsy, they are impossible to get square and keep square as you screw them into the studs. This means the drywall holes will not be totally square either - especially if they use a router which will push the bracket around as they attempt to "outline" the bracket in the drywall. I have not installed the speakers yet, but I am imagining I will have to make the whole square with a drywall knife when it comes time for me to install them. The only reason I bought these was so that I could very easily show the builder where to pull speaker wire to and to have the drywall people router the holes for me. Otherwise I would have to rely on them to measure out and cut speaker locations and I did not want them to mess it up.

Pros: Useful to designate speaker location for wire pulls and drywall install.

Cons: Flimsy, impossible to get and keep square. Expensive for what you get.

Bought this for center channel speaker.

Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: It is a little more cheaply made than some other brand name rough-in mounts but I had no problems installing it.

Flimsy Construction

Written by: MarkK from Denver, CO on March 7, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I got the pre-construction mount I was hoping that it would be of solid construction. The wings that connect to the mount are not actually connected permanently, they just snap into a cheaply designed snap. One of the snaps actually broke on me. I hope that this does not hurt the installation. On the other pre-construction mounts, the wings that connect to the studs actually screw onto the mount (much better construction). I am iffy if I would actually recommend this particular mount due to the way it is constructed.

Pros: Allows for you to get the perfect opening when you don't have drywall

Cons: Flimsy construction and not 100% needed as the speaker can mount without it.
