How about a subwoofer that delivers punch and precision? Polk's PSW404 is ready to send out ample bass for home theater, as well as accurate lows to supplement your music.

This able sub uses a 200-watt high-current amp to power a 10" front-firing woofer. The big foam ring around the driver, called a "Hi-Roll surround," gives the woofer more flexibility for back-and-forth movement, improving performance. A slot-loaded enclosure reduces port turbulence and distortion, for bass that fills your room and still retains detail and shape.

Other Polk-style perks? How about the ultra-solid, anti-resonant build of the '404's enclosure? It promotes durability as well as great sound. The cool styling, with silver details and a real wood veneer, is another popular touch.

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Features

Driver: The PSW404 uses a 10" long-throw polymer composite cone driver for deep, smooth response and low distortion. For improved durability, the woofer uses a hi-roll foam surround.

Video Shielded: The subwoofer is magnetically shielded to allow safe placement next to TVs and video monitors.

Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current amplifier producing 200 watts RMS/375 watts dynamic power.

Enclosure: The PSW404's solid MDF enclosure (including a one inch thick front baffle) suppresses enclosure panel resonance for distortion-free, accurate response.

Slot-Loaded Venting: The PSW404 features a wide, long, slot-load vent (approximately 10-1/2" x 1") to dramatically reduce turbulence, noise and distortion and significantly improve bass response.

3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select "Auto", which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off a few minutes after the signal stops; "On" which keeps the unit on until it is switched off, and "Off" which turns the unit completely off (instead of placing it in a standby mode). The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on and red when the unit is off.

Volume Control: The PSW404 has a rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to select normal or reverse. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Low-Pass Filter: The PSW404 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-125Hz with a 24dB/octave slope. Note: When the subwoofer is connected to a receiver through the LFE input, the low-pass filter of the subwoofer is bypassed. The filter built into the receiver is relied upon to filter the subwoofer output frequencies.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

LFE (Unfiltered) Input: The PSW404 has a gold-plated mono RCA LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input. This input should be used when connecting to a receiver with a filtered subwoofer output, such as those found on most home theater receivers (check the receiver's owner's manual). The LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's built-in low pass crossover. Note: If the receiver's subwoofer output is unfiltered, you should use either the left or right Line Input of the subwoofer.

Line (Filtered) Inputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA Line Level inputs. These inputs are for use with electronics featuring unfiltered "Pre Out" jacks (Example: a separate pre-amp processor with a separate amplifier). It may require "Y adapters" to connect the left and right outputs of the pre-amp processor to both the subwoofer and the power amplifier.

Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has 5-way binding post connections for front speaker level input and output. The subwoofer's low-pass filter takes the low frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) and passes a full-range signal to out to the speakers. This is the recommended method of connecting the subwoofer with a Polk Audio RM-series Home Theater speaker package and other "satellite" speaker systems.

Specifications

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 28-200Hz, -3 dB frequency response is 32-160Hz.

Weight: The PSW404 weighs 46 pounds.

Warranty Notes

Amplifier: The warranty on the amplifier is 3 years parts and labor.

Driver: The warranty on the driver is 5 years parts and labor.

Perfect fit with my system.

The sound you want

Written By PAUL, Cincinnati, Ohio on Thursday, July 27, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a complete HDTV system with all voice matched POLK AUDIO speakers. From center channel to surrounds their performance is great. The PSW 404 powered subwoofer is great! Gives me that boom I'm looking for.
My thoughts were, if one PSW 404 sounded so good, another one could only improve the over all performance of my system. Bottom line is I placed a PSW404 at each end of my room with one behind my monitor, and another one behind my seating section which blended the sound to a new level. I could have had just had the one sub and had quality sound, but I've never been one to settle with great when I can have over the top. If quality is what you want POLK AUDIO is a sure thing.

Another 10" sub

Written By AB, Columbus, OH on Tuesday, July 12, 2005

This sub is amazing. VERY tight, punchy, accurate, hard-hitting sound. However, the 10 clips a little early when pushed, just like I thought another 10" sub would. The "hi-roll" might take a little more than your standard speaker, but not much. Maybe %5-%10.
