Polk Audio

Our take on the Polk Audio R150

Polk's newest R Series speakers offer remarkable audio performance, at a price that won't put a kink in your budget. The R150 bookshelf speakers borrow driver technologies found in Polk's higher-end speakers to fill small- to medium-sized rooms with detailed sound. They're a great pick for stereo listening in a den or bedroom, or for use as surround speakers in a home theater system.

Polk's exclusive driver design and the R150's solidly built cabinet work together to create smooth, accurate sound with minimal distortion. Highs and mids are clear, and bass is tight and accurate. A rubber surround increases the speaker's durability and power handling. The R150s also feature 5-way binding posts for a secure connection to your receiver or amp — a rare find for speakers in this price range. And a compact design means you can place these speakers almost anywhere.

Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Composite Woofers: Each speaker has a 5-1/4" Dynamic Balance mineral filled polymer composite woofer housed in an acoustically inert stamped driver basket for clean midrange and deep, accurate bass. For a smoother response and improved durability, each woofer uses a rubber surround.

Silk Tweeters: Each speaker has a 3/4" Dynamic Balance silk, polymer composite dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet for clear, detailed highs.

Mylar Capacitors: The speakers utilize Mylar bypass capacitors to extend its high frequency response and improve detail and transparency.

Timbre-Matched: The Polk R150s are designed to fit any Polk Audio home theater or multi-channel music system for a more realistic seamless surround sound environment.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 60Hz-24kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 65-20kHz.

Enclosure Design

Bass Port: A rear-firing bass port on each speaker gives you deep, punchy bass response.

Grilles: The speakers feature ant-diffraction grilles that minimize grill diffraction for spacious, three-dimensional imaging.

Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Mounting Options

Video Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded for safe placement near your video sources.

Applications: The R150s can be used as front or rear speakers in your home theater application or can be used as your main stereo pair for music listening.

Optional Speaker Stands: Polk recommends using speaker stands that are 30 to 36 inches tall. The speakers come with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet for each speaker to help secure them in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Wall Mounting: The speaker does not come with any type of wall-bracket or key-hole slot for wall-mounting the speakers. To wall mount the speakers you will need to drill into the back of the speaker cabinet or use the optional B-Tech heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately). The space to drill into the back of the cabinet is 6.1875" x 3.3125" located above the speaker terminal assembly. The bracket will need to be able to withstand at least 10 lbs.

flat sound

Written By B, Charlotte, NC on Saturday, October 01, 2011

have had these for a couple of years. price is great, but sound is very flat and dull. Time to replace another set of speakers, and will not be buying these again. these will get moved into another room where music is not played very often. I am old school,, using just a onkyo reciever pushing 4 different sets of speakers in 4 different rooms. No surround sound for me, just loud music the way it was meant to be like a concert!

if you are short on cash, these are fine. but if you have extra money find somehting better.

Very Good Speakers I am using as front for my Home Theater

Written By Ruben, Gurabo, PR on Saturday, July 30, 2011

Those speakers are the great value for the price right now that you can get. I use them as front speakers and sound very good, also at loud volume. There are compact, but have very good materials and good balance as Polk reputation said. You can use them for surround speakers, but in my case I have a pair of Klipsh that are specialty make for surround. Then my Home Theater consist of a room from the house that I get out the closet doors and use this space to place my Samsung 46" LED TV, Sony BDP-BX58 3D Blu-Ray Player, the Onkyo TX-NR609, the center Polk CRS speaker and as front Polk R150 (that I buy from the same order on Crutchfield) and my Power Subwoofer also from Polk the PSW110 previous owned. I get astonished with the result, the best sound and video I am searching for years ago. In conclusion I highly recommend the Polks R150 and you can not regret. As always from 2001 thank you very much Crutchfield for your great service and free shipping.

Great little speakers

Written By Steve, California on Sunday, July 17, 2011

These are great speakers. Easy to install, and unobtrusive, which is really what we wanted. Sound is better than the 20+ year old speakers we replaced. Shipment was great, and fast. Thanks Crutchfield!

Approved

Written By henryjsx, Burlington, VT on Thursday, June 02, 2011

Just bought these speakers. I needed sound in my bedroom, which is 10x12 -- small. I set up the speakers with a little Sony stereo receiver. The system costs $200 for four Polk speakers, and $125 for the Sony. For $325 I have a perfectly good sound system. If you're looking for some small, cheap speakers that put out a lot of sound, buy 'em.

Decent

Written By AndrewF, Upper Darby, PA on Saturday, March 05, 2011

Well I guess it's decent for the price, but I also ordered a pair of Polk rti A3 speakers. The
difference was dramatic. The A3 speakers were rich, natural, and real sounding. I could
hear instruments I had never heard before, and they all mixed together naturally. The range
was also really good: deep lows and crisp highs.

In comparison, these are just really poor. But I guess you get what you pay for. So in
retrospect, it's not bad... but I definitely recommend a higher end model.
