Polk's newest R Series speakers offer remarkable audio performance, at a price that won't put a kink in your budget. The R150 bookshelf speakers borrow driver technologies found in Polk's higher-end speakers to fill small- to medium-sized rooms with detailed sound. They're a great pick for stereo listening in a den or bedroom, or for use as surround speakers in a home theater system.

Polk's exclusive driver design and the R150's solidly built cabinet work together to create smooth, accurate sound with minimal distortion. Highs and mids are clear, and bass is tight and accurate. A rubber surround increases the speaker's durability and power handling. The R150s also feature 5-way binding posts for a secure connection to your receiver or amp — a rare find for speakers in this price range. And a compact design means you can place these speakers almost anywhere.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Pretty nice satellite speakers

Written By Mark B, Maine on Wednesday, September 02, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed something small for music listening in our kitchen. This was the smallest thing I could find that actually had bass response built in (no subwoofer needed). The sound is pretty nice for the size and price. The high end is good, but midrange warmth is only OK, when I listen to them side-by-side with our primary bookshelf speakers (old B&Ws that cost 4 times as much). That's probably not a fair comparison, and they're certainly good for the price.

Pros: Compact, inexpensive, pretty good sound (very good for the price)

Cons: Sound could be warmer

Good speaker for the price

Written By Richp5, California on Tuesday, January 13, 2015

I have the previous model (T-15) and compared the two. Even though the specs are the same, perhaps because the port on the R-150 faces the rear (a few inches from the wall), it seemed to provide much more bass which increased my rating to a 5 star. Both pairs were on sale (11/2009 t-15 & 12/2014 for the R-150). Though no need, would by another pair on sale just for the heck of it if it becomes available.

Pros: Fills a room or garage (both in my case) with great sound.

Cons: None.

Surprisingly musical at this price. Admttedly being used more for background listening in a 15'x22' room, but aside from a limited bottom range they are very listenable indeed.

Pros: Smooth, surprisingly coherent, not fatiguing at all (not often the case with inexpensive speakers). Sound volume belies the size.

Cons: None really - they deliver what they say they will.

Excellent quality speaker for the cost. Pair with a Polk 10 Sub for low end.

Pros: Excellent quality for price - 5 star for what I am using them for

Cons: Not deep base, can distort if not properly tuned, but not near the price of a Harmon or Focal... If you want deep, buy a sub or a 2K bookshelf speaker. The hit pretty well for what they are.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent 8 years as a Dist. Mgr. for Altec back in the 80's, so I'm picky. These R-150's are wonderful. The sound is rich and bright and the response is quite flat across the spectrum. They perform exceptionally well at high volume levels. (I blew the microphone on one of my hearing aids - literally). I had a pair of Altec 604's in cabinets that Clark Kent could have changed clothes in. I loved them but they were too big for our small living room. These little Polk Audio speakers really fill the bill as replacements and I am totally pleased with them. They have successfully replaced my surround system, sub-woofer and all which was fine for TV but horrible for music which has always been a huge part of my life. Great product and very reasonable.

Pros: Very clean sound from a very small footprint at an excellent price.

Cons: Dynamic range seems a bit low and a bit of bass boost is needed.

Great sound in a small package

Written By Keith, Pittsburgh, Pa on Friday, April 04, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These little guys put out some great sound in a small package. I bought these speakers for my woodshop and have them hooked up with a Sony CD player and Onkyo stereo receiver. Bass could be slightly better, but then I just turn up the bass a little bit if I stray outside my usual classical and blues genre's. These compact boys put out a very clean, solid sound for the price and size. Great for my needs in a 16'X22" workshop. If I leave the doors and window open, I can work in the yard, hearing these little bad boys just fine.

Pros: Excellent, clean, solid sound for a great price and small footprint.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these R150's to replace the front speakers in my surround system, along with a new Denon AV 1613 receiver and fresh speaker cable all around. My living room is small, so these little Polks are a perfect fit. They really sound great, with much improved clarity and range over my older RCA's. I like that they have a durable material on the surrounds as the weather here tends to dry out and damage soft materials. I'm very satisfied with my products, and with the excellent service from Crutchfield as well.

Pros: A great speaker set for a great price. Solid build, clean looks.

I was totally amazed and shocked when I received my new Polk Audio bookself speakers. My wife and been complaining for several months about the large audio speakers within our living room because they were taking up entirely too much space and it got to the point where she had threatened to sell them. The very next day I went searching online for a good deal on bookself speakers and had stumbled upon the Polk Audio R150's. I'm very proud I did. They far exceeded my expectations. My wife was even surprised at how well these bad boy's sound. She's even giving me permission to purchase Polk Audio floor speakers the next time Crutchfield has a sale on their floor speakers. I love these speakers a lot! Awesome deal on a nice set of bookshelf speakers.

Pros: Great price! Nice sound!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own a pair of 3 year old Polk 40's which are fine as front channel speakers in my family room. Was hoping that these 150's would get the job done for stereo in smaller den. Wrong. These are flat and dull sounding. I've heard other major brand speakers with better articulation and over all clarity for about the same money. Needless to say, very disappointed. If I demoed these, I wouldn't have bought. (Yamaha 75w RMS Per at .08THD, Technics DD Turntable, Shure V15, Ipod mp3 player).

Pros: Efficient at 8 OHMs.

Cons: Hyper Mids, Dull highs, non existent lows. Deficiencies cannot be ironed out with EQ.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

More than decent small bookshelf speakers. Tone is good, distortion low even when pumping 105 RMS per channel on medium volume. Similar to my 12 year old Bose 141 speakers I use for the rear channels; the Polk Audio speakers are a bit brighter in the highs and mid range but do not provide quite as much base as the Bose. Very good front speakers for modest budget home theater which is my application teamed up with a Polk Audio 10" powered sub woofer.

Pros: Size and weight fits almost any space, nice wire attachment options, Kudos to Crutchfield for prompt and free delivery too.

Cons: none at the sale price of less than $100 for a pair

I am amazed how these little speakers sound with our 300CD player..before we had very little bass sound and a lot of background noise. After we purchased these we are getting some nice bass tones and very clear sounds. The price was misleading, we did not think they would be this good, but are very pleased in the purchase...nice looking too.

Pros: Good quality , nice sounds, and attractive..small and unobtrusive... am sold on Polk

Cons: Sorry we didn't get them sooner

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I couldn't decide whether to rate these as three or four stars. Compared to the rest of the speakers out there, excluding high end models, which you are not shopping for if you looking at these anyway, these are a solid three. Compared to other speakers near this price range these speakers are a four or maybe a five. Infinity P153, Pioneer sp-bk-21, Polk TL1 are all between $100 to $150 per pair.

I bought these speakers to replace a pair of Yamaha HTIB speakers, which sounded better than one might think. The Polk R150s are of course a definite upgrade, and I was pleasantly surprised with their performance. The R150s do everything well. Sonically they are a pretty neutral speaker, they are balance being neither laid back nor aggressive, and they don't color the music. Paired with a good center channel they work well for home theatre use also. These speakers have a good range for such a small box, the bass is sufficiently deep and tight without sounding boomy. Highs are detailed and even without sounding overly bright and midrange and vocals are clear. The sound seems to be pretty consistent regardless of where I sit in the room, so being off axis is not an issue. If you are considering Polk TL 1 or 2 or Tsi100s, I would definitely give the R150's a listen. I think they do much better job than the TL1 and the TL2 and there is not much difference between these and the Tsi100s. I think you might end up saving yourself $100.

Pros: These are good sounding fairly neutral speakers. If they don't do anything spectacular, they at least do everything pretty well. I like the clarity, range and detail of these speakers. You will be hard pressed to find similarly priced speakers that sound better. If you can get speakers like this, for this price, the Home Theatre in a Box is obsolete. You would do much better building your own system. They are not exactly the same, but I think they pair well with the Polk CS 10 center channel.

Cons: These do not belong in a dedicated home theatre or music room. These speakers are good, but they don't make music come to life, but this is true of everything I have heard in this price range. A better speaker will be more nuanced and throw a wider soundstage, sounding more live. I do think you would have to spend twice the money to achieve this effect. I am not crazy about the matching CSR, there are better centers for the money. Try these instead with the CS 10 and see what you think.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these after calling Crutchfield support line. I had looked at many bookshelf speaker because I could tell that the RM87 speakers that I purchased lacked sound at the lower ranges. I was missing a lot. The ones I was looking at were the RTi A3's and ones like them from other brands. The guy on the phone talked me through why it is important to "voice match", he also looked at everything else I purchased and came up with these as the right speakers for me. I was expecting him to recommend a set of really expensive speakers, but no, these R 150's were exactly what I needed according to him. They arrived and I immediately hooked them up in place of my 2 fronts. I didn't know what to expect. They sounded great, and the sound that I was missing was finally there, making me and my wife happy. All for a great price as well. Thanks Crutchfield support guy! If you don't know what you should get, call Crutchfield and they won't steer you in the wrong direction.

Pros: Sound great and I can now hear what I was missing. Awesome price!

Cons: They're not RTi A7's ;)

have had these for a couple of years. price is great, but sound is very flat and dull. Time to replace another set of speakers, and will not be buying these again. these will get moved into another room where music is not played very often. I am old school,, using just a onkyo reciever pushing 4 different sets of speakers in 4 different rooms. No surround sound for me, just loud music the way it was meant to be like a concert!

if you are short on cash, these are fine. but if you have extra money find somehting better.

Very Good Speakers I am using as front for my Home Theater

Written By Ruben, Gurabo, PR on Saturday, July 30, 2011

Those speakers are the great value for the price right now that you can get. I use them as front speakers and sound very good, also at loud volume. There are compact, but have very good materials and good balance as Polk reputation said. You can use them for surround speakers, but in my case I have a pair of Klipsh that are specialty make for surround. Then my Home Theater consist of a room from the house that I get out the closet doors and use this space to place my Samsung 46" LED TV, Sony BDP-BX58 3D Blu-Ray Player, the Onkyo TX-NR609, the center Polk CRS speaker and as front Polk R150 (that I buy from the same order on Crutchfield) and my Power Subwoofer also from Polk the PSW110 previous owned. I get astonished with the result, the best sound and video I am searching for years ago. In conclusion I highly recommend the Polks R150 and you can not regret. As always from 2001 thank you very much Crutchfield for your great service and free shipping.

If you're looking for some small, cheap speakers that put out a lot of sound, buy 'em.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I guess it's decent for the price, but I also ordered a pair of Polk rti A3 speakers. The
difference was dramatic. The A3 speakers were rich, natural, and real sounding. I could
hear instruments I had never heard before, and they all mixed together naturally. The range
was also really good: deep lows and crisp highs.

In comparison, these are just really poor. But I guess you get what you pay for. So in
retrospect, it's not bad... but I definitely recommend a higher end model.

Great value in a speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a pair of economically priced speakers, to be placed in a small room that
houses a couple of pieces of exercise equipment. I selected the Polk R150 speakers and
have been very impressed with the sound quality that emanates from these speakers.
They have a large sound for a small bookshelf speaker.
I fully recommend them to anyone looking for good sound and not having to "break the bank"
to achieve it.

Super Little Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed cost effective replacement for older tower speakers. Didn't want to spend a lot of $.
Found these Polk speakers at Crutchfield for a price that was too good to be true. Read the
reviews, which were very positive, and decided to take a chance. WOW!!! these little
bookshelve speakers are 10 times better than my older 3' tower speakers, perfect for a small
family room. I'm no expert, but the sound is super even without a sub-woofer. The price was
fantastic. I am now sold on Crutchfield!!

My speakers arrived on time and were in great condition. These relatively small sized
speakers have unbelievably great, crisp and clear sound. I truly enjoy watching movies and
listening to my favorite music selections. Great value at a very reasonable price!

Good value for the $

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'm satisfied with the speakers. I replaced the pair of Dennon speakers that
came with the stereo which is over 20 years old that my kids blew out messing around
with the volume. Since I can't rule out that happening again, I didn't want to invest too
much money.

Sound quality is reasonably good, but I don't think it is as good as the original speakers
which were about 50% bigger. I do like the size of the new speakers better. I very much
feel like I got ample quality for what I was willing to pay for. I'm not an audiophile with
overly high needs, but I tend to be a picky consumer. So while I'd rate the sound a 3 I'm
giving an overall 4 rating due to the value and the speakers nicely fitting the need that I
bought them for.

perfect for surround speakers, even if you are using high end main speakers.

Written By TeeCee, Kalamazoo, MI on Friday, November 12, 2010

A few years ago, we bought a new plasma TV and moved most of our home theatre
audio components upstairs. However, these days, the family is frequently at odds over
what to watch so I have decided to resurrect the system in the basement.

The goal has been to do so on a small budget. I needed a some speakers to replace
the front mains and center channel that I robbed from the basement. Since I have
a powered sub left downstairs (a cheap one I might add), I was attracted to the Polk
R150s; the price was certainly right. To be honest, I did not have
high expectations.

These speakers absolutely blew me away. I sat in the basement and listened to an
audio CD in its entirety after hooking them up. I don't think there is a better value out
there for bookshelf speakers.

Due to their small size, I would NOT recommend them for front mains if you do not have
a sub. However, they a perfect for a satellite, sub-assisted system, or a small room, 2-
channel audio system. They would also work well as surround speakers.

If you're looking for great sound on a budget, look no further.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk R150's had a humming sound when I hook them up. The more I increased the volume the louder the humming got. They sounded OK next to my RTI A center channel, but my center channel sounds great. I returned them which Crutchfield mad easy and simple. I will purchase the RTI A bookshelf speakers instead to match the center channel.

Best Speakers for the Money

Written By SteveNT, Royal Palm Beach, FL on Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Best full-range speakers for the price. They replaced right front and left front of my 5.1
home theater system. I had the previous speakers for 12 years and their cone
suspensions just disintegrated. No, I don't play anything at ear-blasting settings. Center
and rear speakers of same age are still OK but I'll be looking to get a better subwoofer
soon. The one I have is not as old but the sound isn't what it should be.
I recommend the R150's highly for any reasonably-priced home theater installation.

Can't wait to see their full potential.

Right now I'm in the process of moving, so my entertainment center is packed. I hooked these up to my son's bookshelf system, they completely blew me away, even from this source, they sound amazing. Looking forward to hearing them in the new place. Thanks Crutchfield.

Great as surrounds

These work as surrounds only IMO. As mains they sound very thin.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk R150 speakers are a lot of speaker for the money. Voices and instruments sound very natural and there is a lot of sonic separation (i.e., individual sounds are easily distinguished rather than smooshed together). Complemented by a subwoofer they reproduce a very pleasing soundscape. And in spite of their size they can put out a lot of sound when desired.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These were purchased to be used as surround speakers and they do the
job well. They're the perfect size for surround speakers and look and
sound great. Out of curiousity, I connected them as main speakers to see
how they'd sound. Except for the lack of bass response, they sounded
really loud and really clear. Polk speakers rock!

Excellent Value!

Written By Alan, Kalamazoo on Monday, July 20, 2009

I put a pair of these and a Polk PSW-10 sub in my sons bedroom with an
inexpensive receiver. He uses the system mostly for gaming.

These speakers are simply amazing for the price. I don't claim to be an
expert, but I think they are likely the best bang/buck you will ever find in
the realm of audio equiptment.

For a smaller room, you simply can't go wrong if you just want good sound
for the money and don't care about the snob factor.

Light Weight Speakers

Written By CAL, USA on Saturday, March 21, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Light weight speakers for a light weight price. Might be OK for background music that you want to be subtle and barely noticed. I returned them and upon the advice of a big box employee I went to XXXX guitar store and bought a pair of passive studio monitors. Now I have a much bigger and bolder sound even at a fairly low volume setting. And to be fair the speakers I bought did cost twice as much but my system deserved heavier duty speakers. (make sure your amp produces enough wattage... as always) Note: More advanced/expensive studio monitors might not be suitable for home audio!!! The ones I bought suit my individual taste.

Very Nice for the Price!

What can be said hearing is beleiving. Imaging and natural sound for this price. Unheard of!!!!!!! I have had some high dollar speakers in my day, JBL, Infinity, etc. But never have I had this sound. My old speakers were over $500 a pair and not that much better.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a small den and need clear and bold sound that won't overwhelm me in my small space. These speakers are very clear and efficient with bold, punchy bass. I was worried when I bought them that they wouldn't be strong enough -- but they are perfect for my space. In larger areas, they would make perfect surrounds. I have always read that Polks are the best speakers and now I know that to be true.

Solid Performers, Great Value

Written By David, New York State on Sunday, January 25, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a tremendous value. They perform like much larger "old school" three way systems. When coupled with the PSW10 and CSi25 (or equivalent) it provides a superior and well balanced sound. I play jazz, classical and classic rock and am yet to find any short comings. These speakers reproduce the sound like I think it should sound. If you simply want to annoy the neighbors, these may not be for you. But if you want clear and crisp sound that you can't get for the twice the price from the "big box" stores, then you'll love these. I do.

Nice crisp highs and good lows make these speakers an excellent value. They replaced a set of 30 yr old Infinity speakers which were state-of-the-art when they were purchased, and the new Polks sound better than the old Infinitys. The old 80 watt Kenwood amp still sounds great with these speakers. Would recommend to friends. No disappointments, and, of course, what can more can you say about Crutchfield... They're the best all the way around.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased a Onkyo 7.1 surround system 2yrs ago, and have been very happy with it. but felt I could improve the sound by upgrading the side and
rear speakers. I talked to Al (ext.3265) for an opinion, and recommendation, which was to go with the Polk R150 . I ordered a pair, to try, as side speakers and the improvement was superb! Have since ordered another pair to replace the rear. These are dynamite speakers for the money, and have vastly improved the surround effect. This is not to be a criticisim of the Onkyo system, but rather an inexpensive addition to it.

Phenomenal Sound from these Bookshelfs!

Written By rasta28, Orlando, FL on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Having owned many bookshelf speakers in the past( Klipsch, JBL, Boston
Acoustics to name a few), I must say that these polks definately have a
much warmer and cleaner sound. The cabinets are nice looking & not big at
all. What i like about them are that they are very efficient so you can get
fairly loud without much power at all. The tweeter sounds crisp & is not
harsh/ bright like the Klipsch. I have these powered by a Yamaha RX-V659
(100w TRUE RMS/CHANNEL) and it sounds wonderful. I wanted to note that
i listen to music very, very loud and even at reference levels, these do not
distort. If they do, then you might need to upgrade your receiver, to do
these justice. I have these set up as my fronts w/ the crossover set at
60hz. Be sure to break these in before you actually start to push these
hard or you may end up frying your tweeter. I broke them in for about a
week and now that the suspension has loosened up, they are starting to
shine. Movies are more exciting to watch, even on 2.1. You hear things you
never heard before. I keep replaying my favorite scenes, just to enjoy the
sound. Now of course, you aren't going to get wall rattling bass, so you
shouldn't expect that from a bookshelf! If you want a deep low end you can
feel, you should buy a sub plain & simple. However, these hit the higher
bass notes pretty well. The highs/mids/lows are well balanced. I plan on
buying another pair of these soon, along with the Polk CSR. As
always, Crutchfield has top notch service w/fast shipping.

Very nice surround speakers. They compliment my Polk Monitor 30's, Polk CS1 center, and PSW 10 Sub very well. They sound and look great. I would have liked to have used another set of Monitor 30's for surround speakers but they are too big and heavy to ceiling mount. The 150's are not as bulky as the monitor 30's and worked great with the ceiling mount. They also match the monitor series speakers appearance.

Polk Audio R150

Written By Dave, Waynesboro, PA on Friday, May 25, 2007

I just cracked the box from Crutchfield not 30 minutes ago, and hooked these speakers up to my new computer system. I hooked my sound card into the back of an older Sony stereo receiver. It works perfectly!

These Polk R150 speakers replace a larger pair of Yamaha bookshelf speakers that my wife said were too big. Let me tell you, I'm listening to Rush's Cygnus on ITunes as I write this review, and it never sounded so good! There is MUCH MORE MUSICAL DETAIL that I did not hear thru the Yamaha speakers or through the Bose radio I had hooked up previously.

Bottom line, GET THESE SPEAKERS! The PRICE is DEFINITELY RIGHT. Don't expect loads of bass from these, that's not what they are designed to do. But as a stereo pair running the audio from my PC, they SOUND EXCELLENT!

These are an absolute steal for the money! I am using these as surrround back speakers for my Yamaha RX-V659 receiver. The bass is rather surprising for such small speakers. They could easily be used as front channel speakers as long as you don't push them too hard. For the price I highly recommend them.

Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Composite Woofers: Each speaker has a 5-1/4" Dynamic Balance mineral filled polymer composite woofer housed in an acoustically inert stamped driver basket for clean midrange and deep, accurate bass. For a smoother response and improved durability, each woofer uses a rubber surround.

Silk Tweeters: Each speaker has a 3/4" Dynamic Balance silk, polymer composite dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet for clear, detailed highs.

Mylar Capacitors: The speakers utilize Mylar bypass capacitors to extend its high frequency response and improve detail and transparency.

Timbre-Matched: The Polk R150s are designed to fit any Polk Audio home theater or multi-channel music system for a more realistic seamless surround sound environment.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 60Hz-24kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 65-20kHz.

Enclosure Design

Bass Port: A rear-firing bass port on each speaker gives you deep, punchy bass response.

Grilles: The speakers feature ant-diffraction grilles that minimize grill diffraction for spacious, three-dimensional imaging.

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Mounting Options

Video Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded for safe placement near your video sources.

Applications: The R150s can be used as front or rear speakers in your home theater application or can be used as your main stereo pair for music listening.

Optional Speaker Stands: Polk recommends using speaker stands that are 30 to 36 inches tall. The speakers come with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet for each speaker to help secure them in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Wall Mounting: The speaker does not come with any type of wall-bracket or key-hole slot for wall-mounting the speakers. To wall mount the speakers you will need to drill into the back of the speaker cabinet or use the optional B-Tech heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately). The space to drill into the back of the cabinet is 6.1875" x 3.3125" located above the speaker terminal assembly. The bracket will need to be able to withstand at least 10 lbs.
