Get stereo sound from a single speaker

Looking to add music in tight spaces as part of your custom-installed home audio system? The RC6s in-ceiling speaker from Polk Audio delivers both channels of a stereo signal from a single overhead location. It's perfect for a bathroom, kitchen, hallway, or anywhere else that you want great stereo sound from just one hideaway speaker.

Polk Audio RC6s stereo-input speaker

Polk's dual-tweeter design reproduces both the left and right channels of your stereo music sources with a single speaker.

It's also great for big rooms

Want to jam to music in a big living room or bedroom? Place an RC6s in each corner and get stereo sound no matter where you are.

Its clever design gives you the full song without worrying about being too close to one speaker, and too far from another. That way you aren't hearing the guitar and vocals from the left speaker, and bass and drums from the right.

Get all of the musical detail

Polk knows how important it is to preserve the high-frequency detail in your favorite recordings. So they've equipped the RC6s with two soft dome tweeters for crisp, clear sound.

They're paired with a robust 6-1/2" dual-voice coil woofer that takes care of mids and lows. On the back of the speaker you'll find separate connections for the left and right channels of your amplifier.

DIY installation

Polk's rotating-cam design makes your in-ceiling installation go smoother. Once you have the RC6s in place, simply use a screwdriver to tighten each cam for a secure grip against the back of the ceiling.

If this is a do-it-yourself installation, check out our guide to installing in-ceiling speakers, along with our selection of in-wall speaker wire. An optional pre-construction bracket is recommended for new construction. Free lifetime technical support is provided with every Crutchfield purchase.

Features

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Woofers: The RC6s features a Dynamic Balance, mineral-filled polypropylene woofer for clean midrange and deep, accurate bass. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Tweeters: The speaker uses two 3/4" Dynamic Balance, metalized soft dome tweeters for smooth, accurate highs.

Stereo Sound: The dual tweeters in a stereo faceplate deliver left and right channel highs, while a dual voice coil driver automatically sums left and right channel mids and bass, giving you lifelike stereo imaging.

Infinite Baffle Tuning: Infinite Baffle Tuning uses the virtual enclosure of in-wall space for superior bass response.

Moisture-resistant: Durable, moisture-resistant materials allow you to install the speaker in bathrooms, kitchens, even under the eaves of an enclosed porch. (The speaker is not recommended for exposed outdoor use.)

Installation: The round shape and flush-design allow the RC6s to mimic the look of a recessed lighting fixture. The speaker requires a cutout of 7.563" and a mounting depth of 2.625". The speaker frame has a diameter of 8.907". Once the hole is cut, the speaker can be dropped in and the Rotating Cams can be tightened, allowing you to secure the speaker to the drywall without any extra assembly (the Rotating Cams protrude out 0.625" from the cutout opening).

Paintable: The grille and flange can be painted, allowing this speaker to match any decor.

Frequency Response:

  • Overall: 40 Hz-20 kHz
  • -3 dB Limit: 55 Hz-20 kHz

Q
Electrician installed them. Using one speaker with Sonos amp. Seems as though only the right channel is working as when I move balance to the left there is no sound. Was it installed incorrectly?
derpol  Aug 25, 2023
1 answer
A
It sounds as though the installer may have only ran/connect a single-channel of speaker wire to the speaker. I would recommend checking the Sonos Amp to see if the left channel has speaker wire connected. If so, then I would remove the speaker and check for a connection there as well. If you purchased the speaker from Crutchfield, feel free to contact our Tech Support team. Our toll-free Tech Support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website. If you did not purchase the unit from Crutchfield, then you may want to contact the manufacturer.

Q
Why is there 2 negative and 2 positive post on my RC6s polk audio speakers?
ron  May 13, 2023
1 answer
A
This is a stereo speaker with stereo inputs. One of the negative and one of the positive posts are for the left amp channel while the other two are for the right amp channel

Q
I'm trying to find a pre-construction bracket to fit the RC6s since the PB60 is discontinued. What size opening in a bracket would i need for these speakers?
scott  May 11, 2023
1 answer
A
The bracket would need to have an opening large enough to accommodate the 7-5/8" cut out diameter requirement of the speaker.
zachary  May 12, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Hi I see that the pre construction mounting brackets for the RC6s are no longer available. Which other brackets are size compatible for these?
scott  Apr 18, 2023
1 answer
A
That is correct Scott, we can sadly no longer source the pre-construction brackets for these Polk RC6s's. We also currently do not have any bracket that is specifically a fit for these speakers. These can be mounted directly without the bracket and still sound and perform great. We do have the Dynabox in the link below, but it is more of a treatment box for sound quality and sound bleed to other rooms rather than a bracket. It can still be mounted ahead of time to locate speakers easily for drywall or other finishing work before installing the speakers. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_15450306/Dynamat-DynaBox.html

Q
How well does this voice-match with a pair of MC60's in a nearby area?
greg  Sep 07, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Greg, and thank you for your question. The MCs and the RCs are sonically different. On paper the specs look very similar, if not exact, but the crossover is different. The MCs offer a richer, more detailed sound. You dont have many options for a stereo input speaker, but your closest match would be the RC6S

Q
I moved into a home with three of these RC6s speakers in three separate large rooms. I'd like to move one RC6s to another room and use them as Left and Right channels. Do I just wire a single strereo speaker in parallel to convert this stereo speaker into a single channel speaker? I have it hooked up to a Sonos Amp. Thanks!
andesrunner  Mar 31, 2022
2 answers
A
Well, you can - each L/R side has it's own wire posts - but you'd be short changing yourself. This isn't really a 6" speakers, it's two small 3" tweeter cones that share a common base cone. It's specifically designed for stereo imaging in a small space. (As such, it is fantastic.) It's weird that they were put into a large room, but be that as it may, you'd be better off just getting the individual 6" Polks if you want to separate the stereo effect across a large room with two independent L/R channels. If you do this with two RC6s it just won't sound as nice.
robert  Mar 31, 2022
A
That's a bit more technical than I have the information or experience to answer. Mine is wired to a Sonos Connect using both channels. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.
scott  Mar 31, 2022
Q
Is this the largest woofer (6.5) that comes in this stereo input model?
gregory  Aug 13, 2021
1 answer
A
This is the biggest woofer size offered by Polk right now. We usually offer bigger sizes like 8" from other brands. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check current options
jason  Aug 17, 2021 (Staff)
Q
I am installing these speakers throughout our new home. The goal is to install a bracket, before installing the drywall, so the drywaller installers will pre-cut the holes for the speakers. I want to use a bracket mount between the ceiling joists. Do you have a recommendation for the RC6s and RC80i? Thanks!
tim  Apr 09, 2021
1 answer
A
We carry preconstruction brackets that work like you seek for the RC80i (found on their accessories tab). At this time, we do not carry any made specifically for the RC6s but might have one from another manufacturer that can work and recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check

Q
When wiring all 4 terminals, do I need 4 conductor wire? Iâ??m planning on using a receiver and running wires to these RC6s in ceiling speakers. What is best practice?
chad  Apr 12, 2020
3 answers
A
Yes, you need 4 conductor wire.
michael  Apr 13, 2020
A
I just ran a pair (2) of standard 2 conductor speaker cables. I was also installing 5 more pairs of speakers and I didn't want to buy different kinds of cable.
bradley  Apr 12, 2020
A
If you are running just 2 speaker pairs I would run 2 wires with 2 pair each. If you are going to install several speaker pairs in a multi room music setup then you would run 4 pair to your volume control and then a 2 pair wire to each speaker.

Q
Can the Polk Audio R6Cs be mounted in the wall as well?
william  Oct 28, 2019
2 answers
A
I see no reason why they couldn't be mounted in a wall. The speakers have four swing out mounting clips that secure the speaker in place, so it should stay in place even in a wall mounting application.
richard  Oct 28, 2019
A
Yep, that will work fine.
steven  Oct 28, 2019
Q
Can I use just 1 port? Do I have to use all 4 ports? Or can I just jump the wires across each other?
eddie  Sep 22, 2019
5 answers
A
I used all 4 ports just to be safe. Excellent sound quality
michael  Sep 23, 2019
A
The speaker is a stereo input speaker, it has the inputs for your left and right speaker connections. I see no reason as to just using the left or right only, it should work like a standard speaker, but I haven't tried this. I am using it as intended.
richard  Sep 23, 2019
A
I don't understand what ports is, but I think you mean terminal. This speaker is special because it has both right channel and left channel, so that means if you only connect one terminal or port, you're only going to get left channel right and with music you need both channels to have stereo. As far as jumping the wires from one to another, yes you can but that all depends on what amp you're planning to use and your set up. Good luck friend
navid  Sep 22, 2019
A
You will want to use all 4. this is a left and right speaker in one.
mike  Sep 22, 2019
A
I believed it is designed to use both ports (a two channel speaker operating as one). Great speaker, I have it in my bathroom powered by a Sonos Amp.
ryan  Sep 22, 2019
Q
What is the best method to determine placement in room, and how large of an area does each speaker cover?
dean  Dec 23, 2018
1 answer
A
I used this speaker within a 25sf enclosed shower, which was then filled with sound. This speaker supplements a similar two channel speaker in the main bath area which is plenty for the 15'x15' area, except the enclosed shower. Note that the speaker is used to reflect sound from its dry location into the shower, it is not directly exposed to high humidity.
donald  Dec 23, 2018
Q
Anyone know of an appropriate enclosure to use for these? The Monoprice 6.5" ABS Back Enclosure does not fit one these, I tried.
constantine  Aug 05, 2018
1 answer
A
I simply cut the recommended hole size in the ceiling and it fit perfectly. The enclosure is the wall or ceiling.
joanne  Aug 08, 2018
Q
Will these Polk Audio RC6 speakers be Apple AirPlay 2 compatible?
todd  Jun 30, 2017
2 answers
A
As long as you have an Apple AirPlay 2 compatible device powering the speaker then yea. A list of devices can be found on the web I know Sonos is not compatible now. The speakers do not receive signal without an amp. I have mine hooked up to a receiver in one room and a Sonos amp throughout the rest of my house.
matthew  Jun 30, 2017
A
Don't know for sure, but as these are a direct wire attachment to the amplifier I doubt it.

Q
Will these take 12 gauge speaker wire?
scott  May 29, 2016

Yes. They can handle 12 gauge wire.

A
Sure, I used 12 gauge with mine.
nathan  May 30, 2016

Not a raw 12 ga. wire, but if you use a external speaker wire pin connector you can.

I am running just one of these in a secondary bathroom using a Athem receiver which is rated 90 watts per channel. I am also running under audio zone 2 and this speaker sounds great as stand alone speaker.
mark g.  Mar 31, 2016
A
I'm using a Class T mini amplifier, 25w per channel, and it's more than sufficient. (Topping TP20-MK2)
nathan  Mar 31, 2016
A
I'm running 3 pairs, pushing 70W per channel. These are from a Marantz NR-1605 receiver. All sound crisp and clear. They can tolerate more than my ears can
kevin  Mar 30, 2016
A
I'm using an old yamaha (sorry away from home and can't give you the model #) receiver is 50 watts per channel. I really like these speakers. Easy install and sound really good.
mark  Mar 30, 2016
Q
I have 5 pairs of these speakers installed in each room in my house. They are wired up separately to impedance matched volume controls in each room. Can I wire just one set of these speakers (speaker wire only) to Zone 2 on my AV receiver? Without wiring up the volume controls, will that have a negative affect on my receiver?

I have used these speakers in showers for over 12years, many jobs, not once did we have any issues, The most that happens is after a few years of use the grill gets a little rusty which can be painted. Good luck
navid  Sep 22, 2019
A
I would not. I would find a "marine" speaker that boaters would use.

Q
I already have remote front speakers for my 5.1 surround sound can I replace them with these speakers?
nelson  Apr 08, 2015
2 answers
A
Yes, I used them in my family room and they sound great with my Denon 5.1. As you might know, with the speakers mounted in the ceiling you don't need to have the sound up quite as loud in order to easily hear your program or music. I think they make the whole experience a great one!
tommy l  Apr 09, 2015
A
You could but this speaker is like having 2 it takes up four ports on your receiver 2 red 2 black ,which i did not know when i purchase luckily my receiver could accommodate 12 speakers hope this helps

Q
I already have wiring in ceiling so hooking up two sets of outputs to a single speaker is not possible. Would using these as rear and side speakers for 7.1 configuration be a good use of them since not using one of the channels?
michael  Mar 01, 2015

Yes Michael. These would work just fine. If these are the speakers you have for your system. They sound great and will be able to give you the channel of audio you are feeding it.

Can both voice coils be wired to one channel (left or right) to provide increased dispersion? Would this changed the speaker impedance?
steve  Dec 26, 2014
3 answers
A
This is one woofer and two tweeters And the tweeters are separately coiled for right and left. So to answer your question the woofer is a no but the sounds that comes out of the Twetter yes it would be OK to do it
navid  Sep 22, 2019
A
This a single speaker with both channels so I don't believe it can be a true left or right You can put the speaker for each channel using 2 speaker I use it in a restroom for the tv in the morning or background music But don't please call crutchfield and ask them ! They are great
kathy  Dec 27, 2014
A
yes it will

Q
would a pair of these speakers be good to use for Dolby Atmos?
matt  Oct 31, 2014
3 answers
A
I would rather use polk V60 instead. Much better sound and can handle sound better
navid  Sep 22, 2019
A
If wiring both sides to one channel does no change the impedance of the speaker, I would say yes. The wider dispersion would enhance the Atmos effect.
steve  Dec 26, 2014
A
Well I can tell you this speaker is awesome!!! It has great sound and something you should know is this speaker is and has the sound of two speakers ,and it takes up two spots for every speaker. YES that's right so if you only have four outputs you use only one speaker there are 4 wires that need to be hook up for this speaker great quality and sound I went with a 12 speaker 1300 watt receiver and love it I needed just 2 of these for my upper level and have 6 of the rectangular polks for my lower level and these are also indoor or outdoor use as well

Q
Do these work well as just a mono speaker? Picked 2 of these up without realizing they are stereo. Just looked at the price and ratings.
gene  May 09, 2014

A
I've only used them as stereo. when I set up my system they sounded pretty good as mono speakers
vincent  May 10, 2014
A
I've purchased seven of these last year. They should work fine as mono, just need to jump the two channels. I was building a vacation home and used these for outside covered patio that wraps around half of the house, hallway and kitchen. Wanted to be able to hear both channels if you are sitting under one speaker. So I ran two pairs of wire to each speaker, have independent volume controls for each zone at the location of the zone. They sound great. Ric M. Chelan, WA
richard  May 09, 2014
A
Bought and installed these in June of 2013. Since I only ran one speaker wire to each location in the ceiling, I opted for these and chose to split the power and ground cords to both channels. I have 4 in my house, they all are better than we could have imagined. Without a doubt I would recommend these.
john t  May 09, 2014
A
These are great mono speakers. I have one installed in bathroom ceiling. I made a box between the joists to enhance the bass. I highly recommend them. I cannot comment on using 2 of these in the same room since I have no experience with that.

louis  Dec 31, 2013
A
Yes, I had the painter match the color for each room and paint the grills and plastic borders. Looks great! I do know he used a special paint but I have no clue what it was. also he sprayed the grills.
gerald  Dec 30, 2013
A
Yea, it was easy. Spray paint the mesh grill seperately and use the included plastic cover while painting the speaker ring/housing. Easiest part of installing these speakers. Any specific questions?

Q
Can this speaker be used as a center channel is a 5.1 arrangement?
fred  Dec 17, 2013
5 answers
A
I would say no. It is actually a two in one speaker with connections for right and left channel. And while it is a great speaker for whole house stereo use it probably does not have the right imaging to be used a s a center channel.
daniel  Dec 18, 2013
A
Not sure if you want to use this speaker as a center speaker. This speaker is a true stereo speaker and has 4 terminals L+, L-, R+, and R-. If this is what your center channel delivers then this will work fine. Otherwise if your center channel is only C+, C- just get a standard non stereo speaker.
tom  Dec 18, 2013
A
Yes, I suppose you could but I would not make that recommendation. The speaker has dual inputs for both a right and left channel. I used it for a mono speaker off a niles amp (whole house sound) hidden in a small bathroom. It sounds great doing what I wanted but I think Crutchfield could help you with a better choice for a center channel.
lee r  Dec 18, 2013
A
No this is a single stero speaker use as a stand alone unit I did use the standard wall speakers as the center channel with no issues
kathy  Dec 18, 2013
A
I don't believe it is desirable since it is a stereo speaker. It requires a pair of left and right, so it is ideal for a small room to get stereo sound. It is a great small stereo speaker. Polk has a great center channel speaker. It is also great but a little pricey. Technically most speakers that are not stereo would work but the center channel is the hardest working so don't skimp if possible.
