Polk has redesigned their best-selling RTi series speakers for even better audio performance. The RTi4 bookshelf speaker dishes out surprisingly rich, full sound for such a compact model. It takes advantage of the latest generation of Polk's Dynamic Balance® drivers — the 5-1/4" woofer and redesigned 1" silk/polymer tweeter provide smoother response and better detail than the RTis of the past. And these speakers don't just sound great; with its real wood veneer in your choice of black oak or cherry finish, they look great, too.

As always, Polk has paid close attention to the details. The RTi4's cabinet features all-MDF construction with extensive internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance. It also includes Polk's exclusive Power Port technology for clear, deep lows, and an ARC (Acoustic Resonance Control) port for more natural mids. Dual gold-plated 5-way binding posts allow for bi-amping or bi-wiring.

The RTi4s do a great job with stereo music on their own, or you can team them with a powered sub for rib-rattling results. For dynamic, detailed movie sound, use 2 pairs as your home theater's front and surround speakers. For larger rooms, the RTi4s work perfectly as surrounds in combination with RTi tower front speakers.

Recommended center channel speaker: Polk CSi3.
Recommended surround speakers: Polk RTi4.

Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

These speakers are an awesome addition to a surround sound system or as stereo speakers. I have them hooked up in tandum with a 12-inch sub but they definitely work really well on their own. Crisp and clear and project well. All the good reviews are spot on.

Pros: Crisp and clear sound. Great mid.

Cons: I haven't found one yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these for a STEAL and upgraded over my old TSi100's which are now on rear channel duties. Polk once again delivers great audio from a small package at a truly reasonable price. Blu-Rays are now that extra bit more immersive and detailed. Watching Tron: Legacy is simply amazing. The only thing I wish was improved was the low end response. I currently have no subwoofer so i do not completely blame the RTi's for this however by having no sub it does show the slight lack of low end response. Polk did a great job with these little guys but there is only so much one can do with a 5 1/2" woofer.

Pros: Solid design and Craftsmanship, Precise sound and Great Power Handling

Cons: Wish there was a little more punch in the lower ranges

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am still getting used to these speakers. They replaced a beloved pair of Boston Acoustics HD8. The Polk Audio RTi4 put out a strong mid-range sound for the size. They are being used with a basic stereo set up on 22 inch high stands. The price was right. For the size, they put out a sharp, crisp, full sound for my classical and jazz music, but they don't have that WOW factor in that you don't "feel" the music. They are not as sharply defined as my old Boston's, but I am content with them.

Pros: Great value for the price I paid for them. Good sound for size.

Cons: Lacks definition in the lower range.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Years ago I was setting up my system in our TV room. I bought the tower Polks and the center Polk, but didn't want to spend $400 on rear and side rears. When I found these I couldn't reisist. I bought 2 pairs. 1 for the kithen and 1 set for bedroom. I liked them so much I tried them in the rear of my system and WOW they were amazing so bought 2 more pairs to replace the one I stole for the bedroom and kitchen, so 4 pairs total. THEN I saw they were in cherry finsh too so bought a pair for the bathroom (ran off of bedroom amp). Made 5 pairs. THEN I bought a pair for each of my kids. SEVEN pairs. Do you think I like them? THEN as a bonus I found an add for a FREE Polk sub with a $499 purchase so 7 x $150 got me TWO free subs...I loved THAT deal! They sound great on my Onkyo basic 110W per channel middle of the road surround and just the two of them sound amazing on 130 Yamaha in bedroom (no surround...yet). So bottom line...when your room has four of these in the rear, 2 Polk towers in the front, 1 Polk center, and a Polk sub it is unreal. Best I've ever heard. The CLEAR crisp pure sound is like no other. I find myself listening to the wierd noises like bullet cases hitting the floor or keys going in the ignition and bugs flying...so clear and music rocks like they are BIG speakers. Buy them if you can!

Pros: crisp, clear, well made, good bass for a "small" speaker, good looking, sturdy, perfect tone not too high or low, plenty loud, perfect for me.

Cons: Not a con but if want a little more of a "full" sound with more base, get the towers, but for what these are for no cons period.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are smallish book shelf type speakers, their sound represents a great compromise between size and performance. I would certainly recommend them to anyone who wants to listen to a variety of music, where sound quality, space, and price are considerations. They even are nicely styled (I prefer the wood look) either in black or cherry style wood veneer. So, to recap, they sound good, look good, and are reasonably priced. I'd recommend them to anyone.

RTi4 Speakers

Written By Bert G, Spring Hill, FL on Friday, January 20, 2012

I purchased (2)RTi A7 Polkaudio speakers, a Polkaudio CSi A6 center speaker, Polkaudio OWM3 speakers for rear rear surround and a Polkaudio DSWpro660wi subwoofer from Crutchfield to go with my Onkyo AV TX-NR709. That turned out to give me an unbelievably great sound system for movies and music. I was considering bookshelf speakers to use for front height to make it a 7.1 system when. I am surprised at how great they sound. They work together with the rest of my system to create a wall of sound. Thank you, Crutchfield for the timely email that not only saved me money but gave me exactly what I wanted.

Pros: Outstanding build quality, true to life sound at a very good price

Cons: None

Might just last a lifetime

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased my first home theater '5.1 surround sound' system from Crutchfield back in 1999. I chose an Onkyo A/V receiver and Polk Audio speakers, 1 pair of Polk RT35i for the front mains and a pair of Polk RT25i for the rear, both in beautiful cherry wood. The fronts are mounted on Sanus cherry speaker stands which are very solid. The best stands available still to this day are made by Sanus. I chose the Polk CS series center channel speaker and a JBL 10" sub-woofer. Well the JBL died within a couple of years (I should've gotten the Polk!) and I replaced it with a Velodyne 10" powered sub that really puts the JBL to shame. I'm on my third TV and the Onkyo amp is still working fine for my son. I upgraded to an Onkyo 7.1 system awhile back and ordered a set of Polk RTi4s, which are the new version of the RT25i, for the rear channels. I have to say that my 12 year old Polk speakers sound and look as good today as the day I bought them, and I use my system a lot! I have no doubt these speakers will continue to outlast the current display technology so if you are investing in a home theater system, remember that you get what you pay for. Polk speakers are by far one of the best values because what you get is well built, great sounding speakers that can literally 'last a lifetime'. That will leave you free to spend your future money on upgrading your TV and A/V receivers to the latest technology without having to fork out for new speakers.

Pros: Beautiful wood, solid feel and great sound.

Cons: Nothing

These speakers are the best bang for the buck. I had researched for three months
and came to the conclusion that these were the best by far. I have a Onkyo
receiver with a 7.1 sound setup. I purchased two pair, one pair for the rear
surround and one for the sides. What sold me was the reviews from all the other
owners of these speakers. I had some old tower speakers and was hesitant about
these since they were so much smaller. Actually, they blew my old tower speakers
away. My family feels that why do we need to waste money at the movies when we
have the same or better quality at home now. Thank you Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers from Polk once again! These Polk RTi4's matche up perfectly with the CSi3
center channel. These speakers sound awesome under most situations. I am using these at
my front two mains, Bi-Amped as well. With the CSi3 for center and Polk M10's as
surrounds. I wanted to change out my older and larger floor standing Polks (RT400) to
something smaller and newer. The RTi4's do sound really good, but if you like listening to
music or movies at a really loud volume. These speakers will disappoint, only a little.

I can only comment on the receiver I have been using them on its a (Onkyo TX-SR606). I
usually watch movies/music at a volume levels around 40-48, and they sound great. Any
louder they just don't fill the room with as great a sound as you would get with floor standing
speaker. Don't get me wrong, they still sound really good. But they just have that, WOW
factor as you would get with larger floor standing speakers. But honestly that should be
expected, one 5 1/4" driver just can't cut it. But if you have a small to mid size room (12' x 19')
and like watching movies at medium to loud levels these work just fine as long as they are
being used with a good sub! I also can't say enough about fast Crutchfield ships these out!
Great service!

I was looking at these speakers for a long time. I looked at a lot of reviews of
different speaker and decided that these were the best speakers for what I was
trying to do home audio wise. I received two sets of the RTI4's and I love them.
I would recommend them to anyone looking for great sound for front and rear
sounds. I paired it with the CSI3 center channel and the sound is magnificent.
The power that these speakers produce are amazing. The only flaw that I would
say that these have are the size. I did not think that they were as big as they
were but for the sound that you get I can live with the size.

I bought a pair of these speakers to replace an old pair of floor speakers with 12" woofers and great base. Just didn't have room for those big heavy ones. I have a 7.1 setup so I figured the powered sub would help these. They didn't need it. I'll never buy another floor speaker, these produce fantastic sound and Dolby, THX,, etc. sound better than ever. I combined a pair of these with a Polk CSi3 center and couldn't be happier. Thanks to Doug and the great team at Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pity that these are discontinued. I bought two sets of these speakers because I needed the best I could get that could still hang on a wall. I use them in a big room with a PSW111 sub. I was afraid that they might not fill the room, but floor space was at a premium, so I bought them. In truth, I can't handle turning them up to the full volume of the amp, so they definitely can handle more than I can. I also have a pair in my kitchen and dining room without the sub, and they fill the room.

I like classical and a lot of other music except heavy metal. These speakers are wonderful, though in this space, a sub is definitely necessary. Why would anyone spend thousands of dollars for speakers when this much quality comes in such a small package.

Best recommendation I can give is that I hung them up and a friend of mine, who has a jazz radio program, came over and heard them and went home and ordered a pair the same day.

RTi4's Simply Amazing!!!

Written By Kevin, Bensalem, PA on Saturday, January 16, 2010

Just got these speakers today and hooked them up and WOW! Incredible speakers. Bose better watch out because Polk Audio just moved up to top notch in my book. Initial reaction to these speakers was quality. They weigh a good amount for their size, are made out of excellent materials, and sound incredible. I did some comparison shopping and compared these to Bose 201 series V. These are above and beyond in comparison as far as build quality goes and price. I think this is one of the best electronic investments I've made in years. They also got better reviews as well. I really think Bose is just riding on their reputation at this point, but even that's fading fast. Polk Audio- GREAT JOB on these speakers. Thanks.

I had been looking for bookshelf speakers to replace an Energy system and had settled on Polk. I had a chance to preview some at a local store but was still searching. After looking at different models on Crutchfield, I decided to try and speak with a sales assistant. I had the opportunity to speak with Malcolm and was very impressed with his knowledge and helpful, low pressure approach. After hearing what my othere choices were he recommended the RTi4's and layed out the pros and cons of each choice. I was a little apprehensive about buying these speakers with a test drive but took the chance and ordered four. I have to say that these speakers are incredible. The sound is crisp and clean. I heard sounds in my music I had not heard with my previous system. I have these speakers hooked up to a Denon 1910, an Energy sub and Infinity center. Thank you Crutchfield for having Malcolms on you staff.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are currently running as my front speakers in a 5.1 setup with all Polk speakers. I wanted to run tower speakers, but they were not in the budget and the wife would not approve towers in the townhome. I was afraid these would not fill the room as well, but I was wrong. A sub is still a necessity, but the sound from these RTi4's is rich and powerful combined with my high end Denon receiver. Being able to bi-amp wire these is a plus, though unnecessary. Some day I'll get the towers and move these to the rear (can't wait to go 7.1), but until then, these will continue to pump out great sound and keep me more than happy. Do your self a favor and get a pair before they are gone. They sound much better than the Reference series.

Audio has been my hobby for over 30 years, during which I have owned many different types of speakers ranging from small to large, budget to expensive. Each provided a unique listening experience, some better than others. The Polk RTi4's fall in that select category of speakers that provides a "window" into the sound, allowing the listener to become one step closer to the actual performance. I find them to be very transparent with excellent dynamics and surprising low end. The highs are well presented and the midrange is simply astonishing. I am very pleased with the RTi4's and highly recommend them.

Exceeded My High Expectations

Written By Jeffrey, Ashland, OH on Friday, October 12, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Polk makes great speakers. My buddy's house is wired with them and so is my car. My expectations were high for these little guys.

Set up properly with a nice subwoofer, these are just amazing. Polk tends to have pretty conservative amounts of highs for my liking, so I've boosted them via equalization a bit, and they produce just beautiful sound. The highs are crystal clear and just sparkle without an ounce of tinniness or "shimmery" sounds. The mids are rich and smooth without that echo-down-the-tunnel sound.

The lows are good for the speaker type--a punchy response. Just by design, bookshelves really can't have good bass response because there isn't enough cabinet to resonate. My point is, you can't really hold that against it. Instead, just know that fact before buying it to avoid disappointment. I've mated my set with a Velodyne VX-10 sub, hooked up with speaker-level inputs, crossed over at around 90hz. The results are simply amazing.

I don't really know how speakers could get much better without also upgrading the source material (ie HD audio). Bottom line, if you're in the market for bookshelves, the RTi4s will please. Just remember that a sub is a necessity to complete the sound.

One of the great bargains of the hi-fi world

Written By Lee, Chapel Hill, NC on Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk RTi4 is an amazing loudspeaker, particularly in light of its ridiculously low price. I ordered them to replace a set of Polk SDA-1C floor standing speakers I bought in 1989 (Old School Polks back when they competed in the critical-listening high-end audiophile market) that no longer fit my home decor requirements. I had no right to expect these little bookshelf speakers to be in the same ballpark as the old SDAs, but I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice they sound. I also own a ten year old set of SuperZeros and for comparison I set them up and did an A/B listening test. The Polks were superior in every way: pinpoint soundstage, bright and airy highs, a reasonable low range (given the limitations of a small woofer), and a very clean sound that is slightly forward but not fatiguingly so. Obviously, these speakers cannot provide any kind of oomph in the bass. For that, you'll need a powered subwoofer. But as a 2.1 system music-only system, or as part of a larger 5.1 or 7.1 home theater system, the Polk RTi4s are a tremendous bargain.

The sound of these speakers is best described as "crisp". In my relatively accoustically dead listening room, this mates well with the listening environment. If you have a room that is live (hardwood floors, plaster walls, lots of glass), then these Polks may be too bright for your taste. Still, traditionally recorded rock music sounds the way it should be, and classical music is provided with faithful treatment as well. All in all, a remarkable job by the Polk engineers and a steal for the price.

Great for the price

Written By Brad, Chicago, IL on Tuesday, September 04, 2007

I recently purchased these Polks as the primary speakers in a purely stereo setup for an apartment (along with the Polk PSW10 sub for a little extra bass). I didn't want to go too extravagant since I'm not able to fully enjoy anything at volume, especially bass (apartment living). I've been a fan of Polk Audio products for a long time and these bookshelf speakers look and sound great, typical warm Polk sound. It is definitely worth the money to upgrade to the RTi series and enjoy the better sound and real wood veneer. I am running them very nicely with a Harman Kardon receiver and always recommend looking for a high-current receiver with the lowest THD possible when choosing (remember most speakers are damaged not by over-powering but by amplified distortion). Be careful about product specs. because there isn't a good standardized rating system amongst manufacturers and you may be forced to rely on marketing honesty. Do your homework before making any home audio/video purchases.

I am very happy with these speakers but gave them four stars because I felt the bass response fell a little short of the specs. A sub is definitely needed to truly get an accurate music reproduction regardless of genre (even the very affordable PSW10 is a nice addition). My other issue is that these speakers really come alive at high power/volume but lack a little when forced to be turned down which is frequently necessary in a apartment. Polk is not the most efficient speaker on the block and this problem may have been resolved slightly with a different manufacturer.

To me Polk Audio has always been one of the best speaker designers to balance quality and price.

These replaced a venerable pair of speakers I have used as my primary speakers for more than 20 years. These little speakers sound great and are far smaller than what they replaced. In conjunction with a CS3 center speaker they produce excellent sound for both movies and music. Typical laid back and flat Polk sound. I would recommend the sub especially for movies though for music I find the bass acceptable. Hope I can add a sub in the next few months.

Written By Byron, Esopus, New York on Monday, July 17, 2006

I've owned my RTi4 speakers for a little over a year now and must say I am very pleased. They, along with a CSi3 center channel, make up my front array, with a PSW12 subwoofer supplying the bass. At this point, I am using a pair of Polk Audio M3II speakers as surrounds, but will probably be replacing them with another set of RTi4's. The speakers I had just prior to the Polk Audios were made by Infinity. I find the Polks to be much warmer sounding and more pleasant to listen to. They are extremely easy on the ears, even for long periods of time. I also find the Polks work better for a larger variety of material. My old speakers were great for music like rock, rap or techno, but a bit too punchy and technical sounding for other styles of music or movies.

The quality of materials, fit & finish would suggest these speakers cost a lot more than they do. The real wood veneer, especially the cherry, is absolutely stunning and probably adds to their warm sound. If you are thinking about purchasing these speakers, have no second thoughts. They would be a bargain at twice the price.

Before buying these speakers I went to a couple stores and listened to polk, infinity, bose, and other brands of speakers. To me the polk speakers had much better sound, were more dynamic and had better range. If you want to spend $5000 on bose speakers, yeah they would probably sound better, but the ones in this price range are not even close. I have had these speakers along with a polk sub and center channel speaker for almost 2 years, and have loved every minuites of them. The only downside is that they don't seem to be video shielded very well, when placed directly next to a CRT tv, they turned the sides of the image purple.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had these speakers for about 2 months. I have four of them in a room that is approx 12 x 12. I'm running them with a Yamaha 5740 receiver. Great sound and great speakers (very clean and accurate sound). When I watch movies it feels like I'm there. You won't be dissapointed. I will soon be adding a CSi3 center and a PSW-12 woofer, and my system will be complete. Buy em' you'll love em'.

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: Each speaker features a polymer composite woofer for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. For high performance durability, each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. Each tweeter uses a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Acoustically Inert Cabinets: Each speaker cabinet features all-MDF construction with extensive internal bracings that virtually eliminate sound-muddying resonance.

Power Port Venting System: Each speaker has a rear-firing Power Port venting system built into its back plate for precise deep bass response. This venting system allows air velocity to slow gradually, vastly reducing air turbulence, and delivering greater bass efficiency than conventional ports.

Acoustic Resonance Control (ARC): Internal cabinet resonance can impart a "thick" character to voices. Polk's patented Acoustic Resonance Control port system overcomes this problem. In addition to the Power Port venting system, each speaker has a front-firing port that is tuned to suppress the internal cabinet resonance, resulting in smooth, natural midrange reproduction.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: Each speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

Wall Mounting: The Power Port back plate on each speaker has a keyhole slot, allowing the speaker to be mounted on the wall using optional hardware.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

Frequency Response Note: The overall frequency response is 50Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 60-26kHz.
